January 25 VYC Torch results

I realized in starting to compile some overall sailor rankings that Faykin never posted the results from the January 25 races, so here they are... a bit late, and I am a very neutral observer since all I have to go from are some notecards of the raw results.

Chase won... but the most impressive result to me is that Henri started each race and kept coming back for more even though he was not managing to finish... that is motivation. Since this race series Henri has gotten a lot better, I think because Myrrh helped him sort out some of the setting on his PC. The other thing of note is that Pacifen’s wins in the next two regattas is anticipated here... look at her consistent finishes ;-)

official results:
1.) Chase Speculaas 0.75 0.75 0.75 - 2.25
2.) Faykin Odets - 2 2 0.75 4.75
3.) Pacifien Massiel 3 - 3 3 9
4.) Myrrh Massiel 2 3 4 - 9
5.) Drift Monde 5 6 - 4 15
6.) mush Caldera 6 4 5 - 15
7.) Henri Lemieux 8 8 8 - 24

without the throwout race:
Chase Speculaas 0.75 0.75 0.75 2 4.25
Faykin Odets 4 2 2 0.75 8.75
Pacifien Massiel 3 5 3 3 14
Myrrh Massiel 2 3 4 DNS 17
Drift Monde 5 6 6 4 21
mush Caldera 6 4 5 DNS 23
Henri Lemieux DNF DNF DNF DNF 32

Super Bowl Sunday Regatta
02-07-2006 22:06
HOLLYWOOD Feb. 5, 2006 -- MarkTwain White seems to have figured out the spinnaker on the Tako 3.0 well enough to prevail in the marathon Super Bowl Sunday Regatta. mush Caldera had some impressive improvement with his excellent second place showing. And newish skipper Vahsh Udal came roaring into Hollywood to secure a solid third place finish. Nber Medici provided free Super Bowl t-shirts so that attendees could support the team of their choice. It was fun to read comments from those skippers from outside the United States where football is another game entirely. A group photo was taken after the first race and will be uploaded to this forum if and when they once again support attachments. Only two skippers wore the Steelers shirt, while most went for the Seahawks. And the winner of the regatta wore Seahawk colors. So the SL SYC winner of Super Bowl XL was declared to be the Seattle Seahawks!

OFFICIAL REGGATA RESULTS
1. MarkTwain White 3.00 -- (3.0)
2. mush Caldera 6.75 -- (2.3)
3. Vahsh Udal 9.00 -- (2.3)
4. Mel Fitzcarraldo 17.00 -- (3.0)
5. Silkie Muir 17.75 -- (3.0)
6t PENNIE Sassoon 22.00 -- (3.0)
6t Noland Brokken 22.00 -- (2.3)
8. Myrrh Massiel 26.00 -- (3.0) (5 DNS's)
9. Henri Lemieux 28.00 -- (3.0) (3 DNF's)
10. Al Kaiser 30.00 (3 DNS's 2 DNFs)

Commentary by Mark Twain White: First, as to the official results. They differ somewhat from the unofficial results announced at the end of the regatta. Six races of the Long course put a lot of stress on me since I also wanted to sail. This resulted in one race getting counted twice and another left out of the calculations at that time. The error was quickly discovered after the end of the day's events and the results above are based on the correct list of six races.

My compliments to all for doggedly sticking with the two hour six race LONG course marathon. You are all troopers!

Discussions among skippers seemed to confirm what statistics showed, that the sim performed well (no time dilation problems, i.e. no sim enduced lag). Several skippers had, in their views, client side issues that reduced their ability to sail. It would appear that ten boats on the water might put enough load on the sim that those skippers with slower graphics cards or clients might be experiencing some ill effect. For those with faster cards and clients no lag was reported. As an FYI six skippers sailed the new 3.0 boat and four chose to sail the 2.3. The 3.0 boat is more realistic but also more processor intensive according to Kanker Greenacre.

The winds were moderate (average of 7 m/s) for the regatta and that might have reduced the speed difference between the 3.0 and the 2.3 boats. Kanker feels that with increased wind speed the 3.0 will leave the 2.3 behind. We will increase average wind speed for next Sunday's regatta to an average of 10 m/s and see if that has the predicted effect. We will also be looking at ways to reduce the boats in each race and measure any difference that causes for some of our skippers. I will be discussing some ideas along those lines with some of you in the next few days and will post any changes before the event next Sunday.

VYC race results for Tuesday February 7

VYC's second regatta at the Sanchon Sailing center once again had Silkie Muir taking first place in a varied set of races. We ran 4 short inside-the-sim triangle courses around the bouys, then ran two around the continent races. To make things more like RL, I changed the wind before each race (and shouted what the wind settings were so everyone know what they were dealing with). In the third race I made a mistake and set the windsetter to an average windspeed of zero (!!) and we experienced a few minutes of drifting before the wind picked up. I'm not going to make that mistake again... but it was like a no-wind race in RL, except that you could not spit in the water to see if you were moving. For the last two races (round the continent course), the wind was up to an average of 18 with big gusts, but it was still taking 10 minutes or so to complete the course. So we had it all... no wind short courses, medium wind short courses, and high wind open ocean courses. Note that 4 different people won at least one of the 6 races, and PENNIE Sassoon finished each all the races in her VYC debut.

Our next event will be this saturday at 4 pm SL time in Sanchon, but feel free to stop by anytime and practice. Who knows? We might even have a clubhouse someday...
See you Saturday!

SEEDING REGATTA at Starboards Yacht Club
02-11-2006 17:08
This Sunday SYC will host a SEEDING REGATTA in Hollywood.

WHAT: We will run six races (of two heats each) of the SHORT course. The fleet will be divided roughly in half for each race. Thus, if we have 10 boats in the regatta, Race #1 will have two heats of 5 boats each.

Randomization will control the divisions for the first four races. Each race will have two heats. After all boats have raced four times, the last two races (of two heats each) will be divided between an "A" Fleet (top finishers in the first four races) and a "B" Fleet. At the end of the day we will end up with an "A" fleet winner and a "B" fleet winner.

Those quick on their math realize that this means we will be running 12 "races" total . However only about half the fleet is on the water at any given time.

WHEN? Sunday Feb. 12 from 2pm to approximately 4pm.

WHY? From the very beginning of the SLSF it has been the plan to eventually divide the fleets according to skill levels. Before that could be done however we needed to see enough skippers in regular attendance to support the dividing of fleet. Since both SYC and VYC are experiencing increasing numbers of skippers we (SYC) feel it is time to move to this next step. If all goes well we will end up at the end of the day with two fleets roughly divided along skill level lines. It then is our plan to host our regattas with A fleet and B fleet regattas. If this doesn't work, we will try a different approach. This Sunday will be the first step towards that process.

WHAT THEN? With two fleets divided on skill lines we should see better racing with less congestion and where lag exists, less lag. The "A Fleet" shoud see some serious competion between skippers of skill and perhaps some exercise of ROW rights. The "B Fleet" skippers will have a more realistic chance at winning a regatta with competition more evenly balanced.

There will be movement between the two fleets in future regattas. Winners of a "B Fleet" regatta will be moved up to the "A Fleet" the following week. The last place finisher in a "A Fleet" regatta will be moved back to the "B Fleet" for his/her next regatta. If an "A Fleet" skipper misses two SYC regattas in a row he/she is subject to possibly being moved to the "B Fleet" based on proper balancing of the fleets. If a skipper in "B Fleet" who had been in "A Fleet" at some point wins a "B Fleet regatta" he/she AND the top finishing "B Fleet" skipper are both advanced to the "A Fleet".

Please join us for this important event.

Vagabonds Yacht Club race results for Saturday February 11
-Pixeleen Mistral

For the 3rd series in a row, Silkie Muir dominated the fleet with consistent first and second place finishes (and one 3rd, which was a throwout). We ran 4 round-the-buoy triangle course races inside Sanchon sim, then did a round the continent race, and finished up with an out-and-back race to the far side of the continent (Osondoson sim). Again, the windsetter was altered for each of the triangle course races, and first place finishes were spread around the fleet a bit (mush Caldera had a first, and I had two firsts). However, Silkie's consistency is hard to beat. Mel is sailing consistently too, and got second place overall. We had several new sailors join VYC, and Lookfar Callisto and Geoff Gavaskar did surprisingly well considering that they just started SL sailing. Henri Lemieux continues to perserve and seems to be getting the hang of the round the buoys races.

One other note: we will compete for your attention on Valentines day by running the usual VYC regatta at 7 pm SL time in Sanchon. Bring your sweetheart, and sail with us.

Syc Seeding Regatta Establishes Two Fleets
02-13-2006 18:59
HOLLYWOOD Feb. 12, 2006 -- Thirteen skippers participated in SYC's Seeding Regatta Sunday. The winds were up all week leading up to the regatta averaging 10 m/s (that's about 20 knots). Boats were fast and so was the action on the water. Some really great racing could be found in every heat, and occasionally a incident occured that make onlookers wince.

The combined fleet participated in eight heats. the final four heats which were to have been sailed under the A Fleet and B Fleet configurations were scrapped due to time limitation. The scoring of the races did an excellent job of defining what the two fleets might well have looked like if selected based on past performance rather than seeding. However due to uneven, albeit random, seeding there were a few anomolies on scores (but not in fleet assignments) in the view of race director MarkTwain White.

A FLEET
=======
Faykin Odets 3.00
Myrrh Massiel 4.25
Nber Medici 6.75
Kanker Greenacre 11.00
Drift Monde 12.00
Chase Speculass 16.00
Pixeleen Mistral
MarkTwain White

B FLEET
=======
Cerulia Moxie 19.00
PENNIE Sasson 19.00
Noland Brokken 19.00
Germaine LaFollette 21.00
CK Eponym 22.00
Jemster Hartnell 26.00
Al Kaiser 28.00

Commentary on placements: Both Myrrh Massiel and Nber Medici sailed well. However their scores were enhanced by the luck of the draw that placed them in the easier flights on both seedings. On the other side of the coin Cerulia Moxie did very well considering she drew the more difficult fleet assignments on both pairings. It probably won't be long before we see Cerulia move up to the A Fleet. Chase Speculass would have scored better but for a horrendous foul at the start of one race which surely cost him several positions at the end of the race. However even with that incident, Chase sailed well enough to be in the A Fleet.

Neither Pixeleen Mistral or MarkTwain White sailed in the seeding regatta but have been placed in the A Fleet based on past performance. Note that future "new" skippers will start in the B Fleet and move up based on regatta results.

If a skipper in "B Fleet" who had been in "A Fleet" at some point wins a "B Fleet regatta" he/she AND the top finishing "B Fleet" skipper are both advanced to the "A Fleet".

improved sailing in the southern continent and elsewhere?
02-14-2006 06:15
Nova Linden replied to my request to turn scripting on in the linden water sims, so offshore racing ought to be even better now. I have to work in RL now, so I have not check yet, but this sounds really, really good!

/145/b0/87590/1.html

We can all test it out at the VYC regatta in Sanchon tonight at 7pm :-)

...mark, are there additional provisions for balancing the fleets should an influx of new skippers disporportionately load the B fleet, for example?..is the system regulated such that both fleets will remain roughly equal in size over time, or would a third C fleet be added instead?..

...mark, are there additional provisions for balancing the fleets should an influx of new skippers disporportionately load the B fleet, for example?..is the system regulated such that both fleets will remain roughly equal in size over time, or would a third C fleet be added instead?..

Should the community grow to the point that two fleets are inadequate to handle the crowd we will add Fleets C thru Z. If that's inadequate then we will buy out LL and take over the entire grid and rename it Second Sail. GRIN.

A bit more realistically, we MIGHT add a C fleet OR we might adopt or adapt one of the various heat racing systems in use in RL sailing. But I'm not going to worry about that for at least another month. GRIN.

It's been awhile since I have raced under heat systems, so I can't describe it in detail other than to say running them requires more than one person working their butts off for the entire day.

Note regarding numbers of skippers per class: The B fleet will nearly always be a bit larger than the A fleet since newcomers will start there. SYC reserves the right to increase flow into or out of A fleet in order to keep fleet simi-balanced. For example if there are 9 skippers in B fleet and 7 in A fleet we might announce that in a given regatta the top TWO B finishers would advance to A while only one A skipper would go back to B. Alternately we might announce that for that particular day no A skipper will be returned to B fleet at the end of the day.

The system isn't intended to be something that creates a condition where hard line rules serve to create overly unbalanced fleets.

Obviously other groups, such as VYC, may or may not adopt the same system. It would be nice if each group could work cooperatively to make the experience at least similar for the community. But each group will adopt a plan that best serves the skippers who attend their events.

Bottom line: we are experimenting to find a good solution for a growing community of SL sailors. What a wonderful problem to face!

VYC race results for Tuesday February 14
02-14-2006 22:00
Mel Fitzcarraldo sailed three first place finishes and three 3rd place finishes to take home his first VYC regatta victory. Silkie's one win and three second place finishes put her in second place overall, and I just squeaked into 3rd place ahead of Pacifien by 0.25 points. Chase sailed well but sailed the first race backwards and was distracted in the last race when he saw a pirate boat. I think he was getting ready for the Wednesday pirate battles in Sanchon a little early or something. For me, this series was the Valentines day massacre, since I was not sailing consistently, and got a little lost 2 times on the out-and-back Osondoson course. The lesson I took from this is to make myself some landmarks so that I do not have to open up the map so often while sailing. While you can sail with the map open, it seems to slow things down, and really obstructs your field of view. In spite of this, I had a great time since the linden water sims connected to Sanchon now have scripting enabled, so the Tako HUD works much better.

I wanna see a Flying Tako
02-15-2006 10:49
Sounds interesting, Kanker. Will the race be a public event with seating? :-) Or can we bring our own chairs?
From: Kanker Greenacre
Hey people. I've built a new sailboat that uses the wind for propulsion (via a script, that is). It's called the Flying Tako and you can read about it in my post in the classifieds forum. For anyone who has ever sailed before, its operation is pretty intuitive. I was thinking of having a race, or series of races, some time in the next couple of weeks. I know nothing about real sailboat races, so it would probably be a simple affair. Everyone would race the same class of boat, though -- i.e., a Flying Tako. If you are interested in racing, helping me organize the race, or just trying out the boat, let me know below or IM me in-world.

:D Hello Persephone! There are a variety of venues in SL to watch sailing (OR to sail yourself). The next one is scheduled for Thursday evening Feb 16 at 6 pm game time - practice racing in Hollywood Sim. There is a Widow's Watch - top deck of the Admiral's Daughter Pub which allows you to watch the races from a great vantage point. Chairs are provided and drinks are available downstairs in the Admiral's Daughter. I will be there - so if you would like - send me an IM and I will TP you. Looking forward to seeing you again Persephone!

Learn to Sail with a Spinnaker
02-18-2006 13:42
From the Event posting:

Everyone loves the looks of the new spinnakers on the Tako 3.0 RL-like sailboat. But sailing with it can be a... female dog.

Faykin Odets teaches us how to gain mastery of this awesome sail with a 60 minute clinic on its use. Come early, you won't want to be behind the others as we prepare to harness the wind and fly! Improve your sailing, improve your racing, make your teeth brighter in only 60 short minutes.

Class will immedialtely be followed by the weekly regatta in Hollywood.

1PM Sunday. Followed by the regatta at 2PM. Hollywood sim.

Weekly Regatta
02-18-2006 13:48
This week we sail with our two fleets! The "A" Fleet and the "B" Fleet. If you are a saiboat racer that didn't attend our seeding regatta last week, you will be in the "B" fleet along with some excellent skippers, some of whom are very close to winning access to the "A" Fleet.

If you are interested in getting involved in sailboat racing but have not raced yet, then come watch the races from our spectator friendly areas and learn how to get started.

Come to Hollywood, watch the races, and check out all the hoopla in progress for the upcoming Oscars.

2PM to 4PM Sunday in Hollywood sim

Mel Fitzcarraldo wins VYC regatta to post back-to-back victories

Mel Fitzcarraldo wins VYC regatta to post back-to-back victories

This must be Mel’s week. He won the Valentine’s day Vagabonds Yacht Club regatta, and won again Saturday. We ran two short around-the-buoys races inside Sanchon sim, then ran 4 races across the korean sea from Sanchon to Osondoson and back. One thing I found interesting was that there was a reasonably even distribution of first place finishes in the fleet (2 for Mel, 2 for Faykin, 1 for Silkie, and 1 for me). I think part of this is due to changing the wind settings for nearly every race; this helps keep us out of the hamster-exercise-wheel feel of running the same course and wind over and over. Another reason may be the quality of the competition. This leads to another observation: michael Raven is my pick for the SL sailing rookie of the year at this point. I met michael about 4 hours before the races saturday (he was exploring) and told him about the Tako and racing... but I was pressed for time, so about all I told him was that “raise” makes the sail go up, and the arrow keys control the sail and steer the boat. He decided to buy a Tako 2, and showed up for the races. That he managed a second place in the fourth race is very, very impressive (note that he was sailing a Tako 2 and everyone else had Tako 3s). After the event, Mel, Silkie and I agreed that if he works on it a little more michael is going to be scary good.

Upcoming events in Sanchon:
Tuesday Feb 21, 7 PM VYC regatta
Tuesday Feb 23, 5 PM Naval Battle: Pirate Combat (hosted by Chase Speculaas)
Tuesday Feb 25, 4 PM VYC regatta
..and visit the Sanchon Pirates' Pub anytime at Sanchon(134,20) (hosted by Bobby Troughton)

My Sailing experience on 2/18
02-19-2006 11:31
After a long break from VYC events due to non-sailing related issues, I sailed with VYC on Saturday, 2/18.

I was saddened by my experience on that day.

The ROW rules did not seem to be in force. Several violations were spotted by observers, but not acted on. I feel I was fouled on 2 seperate occasions, and protested on the water. My protests were neither accepted nor declined, but rather ignored.

According to my notes and recollections, there were 3 short races and 4 long races held on that day. Yet only 2 short race results were counted. Inclusion of the missing 3rd short race would have changed the final results. ISF rules requires that all races be tallied unless the race is thrown out. Was this race thrown out? Why was this race not included? Or is the ISF ruleset not in force?

When we founded VYC, one of the fundamental principles was the use of the full ISF ROW ruleset. What has happened to this principle during my absence?

I was given a notecard that described the long course that was to be run in this race. I had 3 passengers for the first long course run, and each of them reviewed the notecard given to us by Pixeleen. After running the course as described in the notecard, and described by Pixeleen before the race, I was informed by the other races at the end that "The course goes around the windward bouy first. We all know that." This was NOT the course described by the notecard.

Several times I described the course as the "tour around the island" to my passengers, all in easy listening distance of the other sailors. After running the course 2x around the island, I was informed by the other racers that "oh, we don't go around the island anymore. Someone has set up a windsetter on the east side of the island, so we just sail on the west side."

Apparently, in order to successfully sail with VYC, you have to sail regularly with them, and learn all the house rules... you can't learn the house rules unless you sail and lose to the people who do know the house rules.

When we founded VYC, another one of the principles was "a level playing field." We wanted all sailors to have an equal chance to succeed, and the results of the regattas would be determined by the skill of the sailors. House rules, to me, fly in the face of this principle.

Right now, I am saddened and disapointed with how the VYC race I participated in was held. I hope that VYC harkens back to the founding principles, and re-instates the use of ISF ROW rules and levels the playing field for all participants, regardless of how often they sail with VYC.

Part of the responsibility for this deterioration of the founding principles falls on my shoulders. After all, I am one of the 3 VYC founders, and one of the 2 VYC officers, and I have not been active in helping direct the progress of VYC. I did not, however, expect to see a VYC event that looked like the one I saw on 2/18.

Because of my inactivity, I don't feel I'm closely in-tune to the direction that VYC wants to go in the future. Does the yacht club want to adhere closely to the founding principles of full ISF ROW and a level playing field for all? Or does the club want to continue in the way that we are going now?

If VYC wants to continue in the way I saw on 2/18, then I feel it's time for me to step down as an officer of VYC.

If VYC wants to change to a focus on our founding principles, than I'll remain as an officer of VYC and attempt to help steer VYC back to these founding principles.

I will leave the choice to the membership of VYC, and will be calling for a vote on if VYC wants me to remain in place as an officer within the next few days.

RULES & COURSES
02-19-2006 12:09
From my memory I was hit once by you and you say we touched another time. In both instances my boat was ahead of yours and since I do not have reverse, I am not sure how I could take avoiding action. You could have turned a hell of a lot easier than me to avoid contact and I think that might even be in the rules somewhere. If not it dam well should be.

With regards the course, I speciacally told one of your passengers that the course was to the shops and back and she confirmed it by saying the shops name, Osondoson, which you probably would have heard if you had not been skylarking about with your passengers drinking Martinis. Maybe you missed a lot of other instructions as well.

The course described made no mention of going around the continent it specifically said to Osondoson and return. Sure there was a buoy missed out but I distinctly remember Pix confirming in general chat The windward buoy had to rounded.

It seems you missed this posted landmark as well and it was in the instructions. Arlington 16,30,19 When you round the island, do so counterclockwise (i.e. leave the island on your port (left) side, since I distinctly remember you sailing directly towards Osondoson.

If you read the race instructions, you will see that our protest process is the same as is was in our very first regatta:

1.) Notify the other sailor of the protest on the water. Sailors accept the protest or not.

2.)If the protest is not accepted, the two sailors discuss the issue via chat, and we do not hold up the festivities between races for these discussions. The goal is to get as many races off as quickly as possible rather than run a debating society between races.

3.) If the two sailors still cannot agree, they can notify the race committee of an intent to file a formal protest AFTER the last race is run. That protest is to be written up and made available to the race organizer. I waited around at the finish line to see if anyone had any protests to file, but there were no takers. At that point, the door to filing protests is closed, and we all live with the results as is.

An observer might wonder why someone did not protest a foul. Perhaps it is because it takes some investment of time to do so. Also, some sailors may choose to ignore fouls that they feel do not affect the race results. Since yacht racing is by and large a self policing activity, it is the responsibility of of the participants to police themselves. Complaining that you were fouled, and then failing to follow up on it means you waived your right to complain further. Sorry.

I did announce that we would sail two short courses races and the rest long course races, which is my recollection of what happened. Further, I always make it a point to score the races once we have closed any protests and tell who ever is still around and interested what the results are. That would be the time and raise any issues with scoring. I don’t think I made a mistake, but again if I did, you missed your chance to complain. I’m sorry you felt you that had a bad day.

Either follow the established protest process in the race instructions and help self-police fouls, or the race organizer has no choice but to record the results as is.

I believe I also said that we go around the windward bouy as I described the course before the first running of the long course. While I was describing the course, there was a lot of chatter from your boat and you seemed to be busy talking to your passengers, and playing with martinis. Maybe you were distracted and didn’t notice? That is a downside to passengers...

My suggestion is that you might want pay close attention to the race organizer during the event since race organizers may alter the race instructions as needed. You’ll also need to take some responsibility for filing protests as specified by the race instructions. You might also want to talk to the other officer of VYC about this sort of thing before you post to the forums, as a simple courtesy.

I’m not sure why we need to run a popularity contest... are we suffering from a serious SL Sailing drama shortage at the moment? :-)

Weekly Regatta Results
02-19-2006 17:35
HOLLYWOOD February 19, 2006 -- Our first split fleet weekly regatta exhibited some fine sailing with a number of skippers commenting on how nice it was to have a more managable size fleet to sail against. Lag, normally low in Hollywood anyway, was non-existent on this day according to reports. Some of this was probably due to reduced number of boats on the water, but part of it was most likely due to the fact that LL has moved Hollywood onto a class 4 server, their fastest server.

The overall turn out was 8 boats, our lowest turn out in seven weeks. We don't see that as a trend since a number of our regulars were not going to be around.

A Fleet Final Results
1. Kanker Greenacre 3.75
2. Faykin Odets 7.75
3t Drift Monde 11.00
MarkTwain White 11.00
Nber Medici 11.00

B Fleet Final Results
1. Noland Brokken 3.50
2. PENNIE Sassoon 5.75
3. Cerulia Moxie 8.00

Note that in the second A Fleet race MarkTwain not only got a horrible start, crossing the line early and having to go around, he also fouled Drift Monde on his restart. She did not protest but Mark did a turn anyway because he knew he had fouled. In recent practice sessions we have started to talk about the exercise of the starboards rights rule (which isn't getting protested much right now). The rule has made for much cleaner racing than when we were no row, but when mishaps do occur we should start taking responsibility for our actions. And folks need to become comfortable in calling the protests when they occur. It isn't being anti-social, it's racing.

The A Fleet results left an interestring dilemma. Noland was a clear winner in B Fleet and will be advanced to A Fleet next week. But a three way time for third place in the five boat A Fleet regatta left us with no clear boat to drop to B Fleet. The general consensus was not to drop a boat to B Fleet this next week. Although it was also suggested that the times of the third place boats be compared and the slowest combined time get moved. The combined times looked like this: MarkTwain (23:55), Drift Monde (24:02), and Nber Medici (24:06). We don't plan to move anyone back unless the turn out next week suggests that it is best to do so. In which case Nber Medici will be put into B Fleet.

VYC monthly and overall sailor rankings as of February 20
02-20-2006 17:22
Since we just ran our 17th (!) regatta saturday, I though it would be interesting to do an overall, and a monthly ranking of sailors. Scoring this sort of long running series is a little bit of a challenge, but by using the high-point scoring system we can come up with a ranking that takes into account how many boats you beat (so winning in a large fleet is a plus) and does not penalize you for sailing in a race even if you come in last. This system appeals to me, since the goal is to get more people out racing, and rewards ought to accrue to those who show up consistently and sail well. Perhaps I am being a bit selfish here, since I have only missed 2 VYC regattas. You can read about the tradeoffs in scoring system here: http://www.ussailing.org/rules/downloads/Long_Series_Scoring.pdf. For our purposes, I’m assuming that we qualify someone for ranking if they manage to complete at least one race.

The high point scoring works like this: if there are 8 boats competing, the boat in first place gets 8 points, second place gets 7 points, and so on... Even the last place finisher gets a point, and the people who did not sail are the only real losers (a disqualification or no finish = no points). I’m scoring this with no throw out races, and for your convenience also calculating a percentage (something like a batting average, I am told). The fraction is how many points a given racer scored compared to the theoretical maximum.

Here are the monthly scores, followed by the overall rankings. Note that we have had 25 sailors compete with VYC. That is almost exactly one quarter our membership.

Vagabonds Yacht Club in Sanchon Sim Race results for Tuesday February 21
- Pixeleen Mistral

Silkie Muir was back in form posting a pair of first place finishes in the long course and two second place finishes in the short triangle course to win the regatte and snap Mel Fitzcarraldo 2 regatta winning streak . Silkie and I both benefitted greatly from having a throwout race, since this let us drop some really bad races. Without the thowout race both Silkie and I would have falled one place in the standings. Hoever, in the official results I just squeaked past Pacifien on a tie breaker (we had identical scores, but I beat Pacifien in the last race). Note that first place finishes were spread around: we ran 5 races and 4 different people won races. This was a relatively large fleet (9 boats) and I got to sail woth both some old friends who I ve not seen for a while and some regulars. After the racing was done, we retired to the Pirates Pub for drinks, dancing, and movies. As I write this, I see pirate ships crusiing Sanchon preparing for wednesday's pirate battles. Hey! they are firing on me... time to move to higher ground.

upcoming events:

Wednesday: 7 pm: Pirate Battle
Saturday: 4 pm, VYC sailboat regatta
Tuesday: 7 pm, VYC sailboat regatta

.. and stop by anytime to sail or hang out in the Pirate's Pub

SLSF Discussion Forum
02-25-2006 08:54
Kanker Greenacre's persistence has finally paid off and our own dedicated forum for sailing discussion is online!

Second Life Sailing Federation :)

As both Second Life and the sailing community continue our rapid growth, this new forum should prove a great host to our burgeoning discourse and an invaluable resource for new skippers. I've created several key threads to help kick off the transition to our new home:

Upcoming Events
Sailing the Flying Tako
International Sailing Federation Racing Rules
Starboard Yacht Club Regatta Results
Vagabonds Yacht Club Regatta Results

Since the Group Forums don't enjoy the same visibility of the general Discussion Forums, it's important that we continue posting upcoming events and regatta results to the Special Attractions forum as well as this thread, for proper community outreach. We all must keep diligent in linking back to our new home, however, to provide a comprehensive and readily digestible reference for new skippers and old hands alike.

Detailed discussion should be kept within the new SLSF forum to ensure that our more-publicly visible traffic remains accessible and encouraging to the uninitiated. Let's all take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to expand our community!

Vagabonds Yacht Club race results for february 26, 2006
-pixeleen mistral

Our 19th event acted as the racing debut of the Flying Tako version 3.1, and we gave the new version a workout in a variety of conditions ranging from zero wind (yes, I accidentally did it again, but I swear I will NEVER EVER set the wind to zero again) to 18-25. The first four races were the short triangle course, and then we celebrated the liberation of Danbi from the build-blockade by sailing two around-the-continent courses. I want to personally thank Kazanture Aleixandre for taking the time to remove the ban left behind by a former tenant; this made it possible for us to easily sail up the eastern cost of the korean-named continent. Three cheers for Kaz!

The Tako 3.1 has one new feature that is important for the sort of blue water sailing we do when we venture outside of Sanchon. The 3.1 will ignore windsetters from the time it passes the starting line at the start, until you cross the line at the finish. The need for this feature became clear several weeks ago when we started noticing that some people (but not everyone) would pick up wind settings from windsetters outside Sanchon, so that some parts of the fleet had significantly different (and generally lower) wind than others. mush Caldera ran into exactly this problem in the last two races. Serious racers will want to upgrade to a Tako 3.1 if possible. Thanks to Kanker Greenacre for producing both a new starting line and a new version of the Tako to fix the problem. The SLSF starting lines in Sanchon and Torch have both been upgraded.

There were three sailors who won 2 races each, but Silkie's consistency put her ahead of everyone else again. Mel took second place, and Myrrh was impressive in third place. I decided to try a hot pink colored boat against Myrrh's advice, and learned the hard way that hot pink is a slow color. I'm not sailing that boat anymore...

events scheduled for the Sanchon Sailing Center:
* monday 7 pm: pirate practice hosted by Static Sproket and Bobby Troughton
* tuesday 7 pm: VYC regatta hosted by Pixeleen Mistral
* wednesday 7 pm: Pirate Naval Battle: Blockade hosted by Chase Speculaas
* saturday 4 pm: VYC regatta hosted by Pixeleen Mistral
..and stop by anytime to sail or hang out at the Pirates Pub.

updated VYC sailor rankings to set the stage for tuesday night races
02-26-2006 14:45
With one regatta to go in february, here are the VYC sailor rankings. These rankings are based on high point scoring of races. The more competitors you finish ahead of, the more points you gain... you get a point for each competitor you finish ahead of in each race. This sort of scoring system rewards both attendance (since you will get at least 1 point for every race you complete) and finishing well in large fleets (since you can finish ahead of more competitors if the fleet is larger).

At this point, baring a complete breakdown, Silkie (235 pts) appears to have february locked up. Mel (218 pts) might be able to catch her if there is a good turnout tuesday and he finishes ahead of a lot of people, but we would need to pick up 18 more points than Silkie to pull ahead. Another way of looking at this is to say that Mel needs to finish 3 places ahead of Silkie in 6 races to get ahead of her.

It gets very interesting when we look at Pacifien(74 pts), Myrrh (79 pts) , and mush (71 pts) who are all within striking distance of each other. A good (or bad) race for any of this group and the rankings will change. Henri, Geoff and Lookfar are also closely bunched, and it is likely that the ranking could changes for them.

For detailed sailing discussion, visit the Second Life Sailing Federation forums!
