I suggest that we have a rules committee chairperson to hammer out a process to deal with protest and violations of ROW.

I'm envisioning a charter where the chairperson will define things like who, when, how many, objectives, expectations, debate format, etc., and will be responsible to the sailing community for the behavior of the committee.

I think that while these processes are in development, the chairperson should NOT be racing in ROW regattas, to prevent any possible conflict of interest.

Per my discussion with Mark and Nber earlier, I will throw my name in the hat as a rules committee chairman, if you as a community want this of me.

If you as a community decide that you want me as the chairman, I will retire from racing in any ROW event that recognizes the rules committee as a forum for conflict resolution, until such time as a mature process has been established and accepted by the sailing community, or the community decides that my services as chairman are no longer needed, at which time I'll get back to my love of racing :).

So what do y'all think of THIS idea? Anything you'd like to see changed? defined? clarified? restricted?

Last regatta
12-13-2005 08:22
oh, one more thing.

I would like to request that we no longer discuss any ROW violations, protests, etc. from the last regatta in these forums.

The participants of the regatta did NOT agree to having their every action scrutinized and judged by every memeber of the SL sailing community, and anyone else who might choose to view these forums. The participants agreed to race. That's all, just race.

I don't think it's fair to take that agreement to race and turn it into... well... what is happening now in these forums.

Instead, let's focus our energy and passion into creating a fair, just, and compassionate process for addressing ROW violations.

Ok, Faykin, if you decide to reopen the hearing I submit that Pixeleen may be in violation of rules 14 and 16.1.

Rule 14 says that "A boat shall avoid contact with another boat if reasonably possible. However a right-of-way boat or one entitled to room need not act to avoid contact UNTIL IT IS CLEAR that the other boat is not keeping clear or giving room." My reading of the testimony suggests that Helen DID try to avoid contact and that Pixelleen hit her anyway. Pixeleen did NOT argue that she could not avoid Helen, rather she argued that she was afraid the boat behind her would catch her.

Rule 16.1 says "when a right-of-way boat changes course, she shall give the other boat room to keep clear." I would argue based on the tetimony given and the photo supplied that Pixeleen did indeed change course and did not give the other boat room to keep clear

Can I suggest you reexamine some of the other evidence regarding the possible violation of rule 16. Pix's transcript shows she hailed Helen several times. Helen's statement said she didn't hear it. From this we can deduce one of 3 things to be the case: 1) Pix doctored her transcript. 2) Helen wasn't paying attention and/or is lying when she says she didn't see the protest or a third one I'll come to: I'm going to discard both 1 and 2 before I get to 3. I don't think either of them are lying about what they said happened. Pix did a little tack and changed course and tried to warn Helen off. Helen didn't expect the little tack and didn't hear the warnings. A collision ensued. This leaves us with 3) Pix was more than 20m away from Helen when she issued her last hail. We can assert this quite happily - saying things in SL has a well documented 20m radius of hearing. Although I've never actually measured a Tako I'd say that 20m strikes me as being a reasonable approximation to two boat lengths. I have a sneaking suspicion it's just over two boat lengths, but it's certainly around that mark. Thus, by all the definitions of keep clear and give room to keep clear Pix appears to have done so. Sorry Helen, Pix's tack may have been unexpected and rather aggressive but it also appears to be a legitimate move.

This brings us on to rule 14. Under rule 14 the boat with ROW is not obliged to give space until it is obvious the other boat is not going to AND if contact does occur the boat with ROW is not at fault unless damage occurs. If damage occurs both boats shall be disqualfied. Sadly, or not, in SL we can't damage each other's boats, but under a strict interpretation of the rules it looks to me like Pix is OK.

I think Pix was in the wrong to post this stuff here without anonymising it, and without checking with the other party. I wasn't privvy to the discussions between Pix, Helen and the protest committee, Pix may also have been in the wrong about that too, I'm going to equally assume Mark's testimony that the committee agreed to wait until Helen could present her evidence and say that Pix is in the wrong on that count. But for the sailing, for my twopennyworth she was in the right.

Using Pix's and other's words, what can we learn from this? What can we do to fix this broken process? Well I think the committee (however constituted) should make a decision and relay to the parties involved - that would be the race host and the people involved in the protest. If they decide the situation is worth publishing as an example then the committee approaches someone (can be a committee member or another) to write a suitably anonymous example from it. This goes back for approval to the committee and all parties in the protest (so not the race organiser unless they were also on the committee or in the protest). Then it gets published here or elsewhere. This lets us build up a body of evidence, instructional material, interpretations, precedents etc. that we can refer people to. Ideally it's written AS an instructional piece not as a simple recording of the facts and the outcomes. Photos etc. if submitted as evidence and suitable for inclusion in the final piece should also be anonymised - maybe a black and a red boat (hull, sail etc.) with the red boat being the transgressor, and the sailor(s) blocked out too. There are several people that can do that, and since both parties will agree to it's being published those people get the chance to check they're not identifiable.

For those dismayed by the turn of events here, which to some extent includes me, can I just point out that this level of wrangling and argument isn't uncommon in yacht racing. Nor is the tactical manoeuvering to force another to foul or get shoved into a lousy position. Don't believe me? Try to catch some sailing (Louis Vitton or similar) when it's on TV. These are the best skippers in the world and some of the ways they describe the judges decisions (who are on the spot and well paid professionals at this sort of task) get bleeped on UK TV as being too rude.

In the meantime I'll look forward to some fun, polite sailing with different tactics and less post mortem in the no-ROW races at the weekend.

Rules committee
12-13-2005 09:16
Oh, based on what's been posted,

I'd like to nominate Eloise as rules committee chairperson, if she'll accept.

First, she is MUCH more knowledgeable about ISF ROW and protest processes than I am, as evidenced by the quality of her posts here.

Second, she is not actively participating in any sailing events that recognize ISF ROW, so she has no vested personal interest in any specific results.

Third, she's demonstrated not only a sense of justice and fair play, but also a sense of compassion for the participents of the events.

Fourth, that means I get to keep racing.

there are places (for example in Portage) where short tacks are required, there are also times when they're used tactically for any of a number of reasons, up to and including forcing the other skipper to foul you and have to do a penalty turn
I am aware that short tacks are necessary on some parts of the course, but this isn't generally one of them... I think I've done this course often enough now to be able to anitcipate to a certain extent which way oncomers are likely to go, and usually at that point they tend to be going away from the land (when coming from the south). However if, as you say, changing tack like that is a valid tactic forcing someone to foul, then I think it stinks. It also begs the question, why would someone who was at that point apparnently in winning position deliberately cause this foul, knowing it would probably cost them their place? Unless, of course, they had already lost their position and wanted a scapegoat? (I'm not suggesting that is what Pix intended, but I'm just trying to make some sense of it all).

One thing I haven't mentioned so far, is the fact that Pix also tried to cause me to foul her in the previous race by squeezing between me and a buoy. I think I could have protested, but instead chose to avoid hitting her and go wide, as I wasn't sure and didn't want any trouble.

Guys... it aint worth all the drama.

It's just a sailboat race, a virtual one at that... Nothin at stake but braggin rights among a very small circle of people.

You're losing sight of the original intent, which was to have fun sailing together (anybody remember fun?) and maybe bring a few newbies into the fold while we were at it. If I were a newbie these days, I'd buy myself a touring Tako and stay far from you folks... and if anyone wonders why I haven't been racing for a while, there you have it. You'll still see me sailing tho...just far from the racecourses, and mostly in the SL wind.

I was one of the original agitators for ROW rules applied to racing... beacuse too often I found myself sailing into a scrum that blocked the course, one that could have been avoided by simple adherence to port/starboard or windward/leeward rules. If no one's moving, its not a race...

Somehow it's gotten out of hand tho... Everyone who knows the rules well enough uses them, to the extent of their knowledge, as a tool... That's called tactics, and it's an accepted and vital part of any race, on the water. Now you're using them off the water, after the fact, where they were never meant to apply. You're turning them into politics, and I have to wash my hands. I'll be bowing out of any group with "Yacht Club" in the name next time I log in.

'Twas fun while it lasted, folks, and I thank you all for the camaraderie and sportsmanship we used to enjoy.

I'm still waiting on Tako 3.0, still sailing... shucks, I'll even race ya... just find me on the water and catch me if you can.

There is another possibility that you might have over looked. During your absence the fleet developed, from a suggestion from Faykin and expanded by Pixeleen, gesture based chat commands that allows us to rapidly sent text messages. See messages #255 following. It has been common in recent races to see text lines repeated rapidly since to do so only requires that a function key be hit. Pixeleen's several hails were her standard text she uses to hail port boats and all five (or however many hails there were) could all have been executed in one second or less. Was this the case? Don't know.

Wonderful post Doc! And yes, I had noticed. See post #272 above.

SNIP!

Wasn't addressing the comment at you, or anyone in particular, Mark - just airing my personal views...

I have this wonderful idea - why doesn't everybody get on with sailing? The full range of options look like being available again very soon, and everyone can do their own thing.

Dragging things out at length in the forum doesn't strike me as being terribly productive. Sitting at the tiller of a Tako does.

Hear, hear! Let's go sailing!

As of now, Hollywood is adopting the same policy as Doc has in Portage. We will only race no ROW. I don't even want to have limited ROW given my distaste for what has occured. And like Doc we expect skippers to be cordial to one enother.

We will reconsider limited ROW and full ROW if and when the time seems right.

Whilst this is irrelevant now the timing isn't gemaine - if we assume Helen didn't hear them, then Pix issued them when she was more than 20m, and thus more than 2 boat lengths away. I must admit I'd assumed Pix had them on gestures - that identical almost got to be. But how fast she says them doesn't affect how far away she was when she said them.

Join us Friday Decmber 16 at 5:00 pm SL time for Vagabonds Yacht Club's first series of races. We will run as many races as we can, starting with short round the island races to get better at starting tactics, followed with long course races to work on open water sailing skills. Sailing of all abilities welcome provided you are willing to sail under the international sailing federation rules and want to improve your skills.

See http://www.sailingcourse.com/ for an intro to the rules and tactics.

A tip of the hat to our friends at SL-Rentals for allowing us the use of their water.

We will be at Tompson(169,79,0). For this event, the race committee consists of Faykin Odets and Pixeleen Mistral. We'll drop a notecard on all the Vagabonds Yacht Club group members in the next day or so with a few more details, but mark your calendar now, and we'll see you on the water.

I'm busy writing up the race instructions circular, so I'm trying to foist trophy work onto Faykin. Hey Faykin, how are those trophies coming along? You have them done yet? :-)

Helen, as Commodore of Starboards Yacht Club I apologize to you for the way you have been treated by one of our members on Sunday and on the forum. It is not the intention of SYC to support such conduct.
Thanks, Mark, its greatly appreciated - and thanks for reinviting me to Starboards Yacht Club yesterday. I'm not sure how often I will be able to get to Hollywood, but will try to whenever I can, and finally enjoy the racing for the fun that it can be. :)

Absolutely right, Oli.... and yes, I do remember fun! I think I might be concentrating more on sailing in the SL winds in future as well, though I will try to get to some of the no-ROW races which I do enjoy. :)

Thanks all for the comments. I'm leaving things as they are for now as I see no point in continuing to flog a dead horse. Lets just have fun sailing, wherever we decide to do it.

VYC race instructions for Friday December 16 5:00 PM race series

Race Instructions

Vagabonds Yacht Club's first series of races

Friday December 16, 2005 at 5:00-6:00 PM SL time

We will run as many races as we can, starting with short round the island races to get better at starting tactics, followed with the SL-Rentals Tompson long course races to work on open water sailing skills. Sailing of all abilities are welcome provided you are willing to sail under the international sailing federation rules and want to improve your skills. See http://www.sailingcourse.com/ for an introduction to the rules and tactics.

Participants are implicitly agreeing to participate in a sporting event in a public space where right of way rules will be used whenever possible to gain advantage over other boats. All of us will make mistakes, and you do not get to whine about it, you get to learn from it. Sail smart and sail hard, but respect your competition, the rules, and the sport. We do not have enough organizational infrastructure to provide an avenue for appeals. You implicitly agree that decisions of the race committee and protest committee are final.

1. RULES: The regatta will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing

2. ENTRIES: Show up with a Flying Tako and race with us. This race is limited to racing version of the Flying Tako one-design sailboat. If you are a complete beginner you can learn a lot by watching, and asking questions after the races are over. If you have basic sailing skills, and a willingness to learn please join us. You might make a mistake or two and get protested, but you will learn the right of way rules quickly.

3. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS: The race committee for this event is Faykin Odets and Pixeleen Mistral. The race committee will announce courses and race starts.

4. SIGNALS: The SLSF start line will be used to signal starts and record finishes. Boats may hail each other via chat. If you do not want to type out the entire signal or hail to another boat, this shorthand is used: To signal another boat of a protest shout “P {name}” where {name} is the name of the skipper or the ID of the boat. To accept a protest, shout “A”. If you do not accept a protest, shout “N”.

If you realize you have fouled another boat, do not wait to be protested. Call the foul on yourself by shouting “A {name}” where {name} is the name of the boat you fouled. Calling the foul on yourself without waiting for the other boat to protest you will gain you huge amounts of good karma with everyone. When the race committee determines that a participant has accumulated sufficient good karma, one or more members of the committee will offer you a hug. You signal your acceptance or denial of this hug by saying “yes” or “no”. Hugs will not affect your standing in the race results.

5. PROTESTS: If a protest is not accepted during the race, the involved parties should privately (via IM) discuss the matter. Discussing the issue via chat between races wastes everyone’s time. If the party which was protested discovers they were in error, they shall shall notify the race committee that they have withdrawn from the race in which they fouled the other boat. If the party that issued the protest realizes that their protest was in error, they should make a public apology to the other party via chat. The signal for this is to say “Sorry {name}, I was wrong”.

In the sad and unlikely event that the parties to a protest cannot resolve the protest, they have 5 minutes after the LAST race to notify the race committee that a written protest will be filed. After this point, new protests are no longer accepted. The involved parties then have 15 minutes to prepare written explanations of what happened and other evidence (drawings, photos) to support their case.

The race committee will appoint a protest committee to hear the protest. If one of the parties to the protest does not file written evidence or is not present to answer the protest committee’s questions, the protest committee will render judgement using the available evidence. There will be no appeal of the judgement, since we are the only group sailing with the full racing rule book. Since you cannot appeal, you can use your excess energy to recruit sailors so that we can get enough to have an appeals board, and have better luck next time.

6. SCORING: The low point system of Appendix A will be used. If we sail four races, each boats worst score will be excluded from her series score. If we sail eight races, the two worst scores are excluded, and so on.

7. TROPHIES: Trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will be awarded. If Faykin gets busy, other trophies may be awarded as well.

8. GOOD LUCK and SEE YOU ON THE WATER!!!

Sunday Sailing in Hollywood
12-16-2005 10:08
Here is a copy of the posting for Sunday's sailing events in Hollywood. For this week we are combining our racing with our Learn to Sail program in a fun two hour event.

This is the last event of the year in Starboards Yacht Club (Happy Holidays!). Let's wrap up the season in style.

EVENT DESCRIPTION: Come enjoy a fun time on the water in beautiful HOLLYWOOD.

We use the TAKO sailboat which is scripted to manuever like a real sailboat in real winds (not the fickle winds of SL). You can buy a boat for $1L at our marina.

Events in our first hour:

Sailboat Drag Races: Learn how to trim sails with precision and make good racing turns.

Sailboat Tag: Just like tag you played when you were a kid. Lots of fun and teaches you how to manuver your boat and avoid others in tight quarters.

Sailboat Soccer: Push a giant 10-meter soccer ball across the sim. A team sport that helps you learn to manuver the Tako sailboat and react quickly to ever changing conditions.

Events in our second hour:

Fun Races: Some races with no rules. Some races with four basic simple rules. Learn racing strategies and rules in a friendly encouraging environment.

This is a great place to learn to sail and a great place for beginnners and experienced alike to hone their skills and have fun racing.

2 hour event (2-4PM). Spend the afternoon with us, and feel refreshed for work on Monday!

Tako Racing in Tompson
12-16-2005 16:45
Program of races for the competition version of the Tako Sailboat on the Tompson course.

This Regatta will be run on a Non-ROW basis.

After a break Sailboat Racing in Tompson is Back!

This is going to be a bit of a shakedown regatta, worth attending to check out the course alterations, or, if you are a newcomer to Tako Sailing, to check out an exceptional course spanning two beautiful sims.

Start 13:00 (1:00PM) Saturday 17th, in Tompson

VYC first race series results

First order of business: where is the next race?
From: Doc Nielsen

Pixeleen whispers: my advice is to mind the penguins and... well... uhhh... I hate to mention this in public but, Doc, I caught some of those penguins making long distance phone calls to the south pole from my house. Where can I send the bill? They cleaned out the liquor cabinet as well. More on this later, but those penguins seem to be up to something. Do you have any exrta herring? They keep asking.

Second order of business: VYC race results
The VYC held it's first race series and we managed 8 races in an hour. Then the sim crashed. I think we broke something... sorry! It will probably grow back in time. The crash happened just as the last race ended. But by using advanced carbon-14 dating techniques, we were able to recover the results for the last race, and can now report the official and final race results. I must beg forgiveness for delaying this long. I really wanted to eat dinner, so those that hung around after the race got results about 4 hours ago.

Eash racer got to throw out their worst 2 finishes, so the final results were:

1. Faykin Odets 5.75 points
2. Chase Speculaas 10.75 points
3. mush Caldera 15.5 points
4. Pixeleen Mistral 20.0 points
5. Samantha Canetti 23.0 points

It is interesting to contemplate what the results woukd be without the throwout
races:

1. (Tie) Faykin Odets 15.75 points
1. (Tie) Chase Speculaas 15.75 points
3. mush Caldera 23.5 points
4. Samantha Canetti 28.0 points
5. Pixeleen Mistral 30.0 points

Samantha just started sailing a week ago and was taking sailing lessons
from Faykin last sunday. If you are a beginner, I'd suggest a sailing
lesson from Faykin. Looks like I need one, too.

Long distance calls? Drinking you booze? Huh! Ask Oli what the ones who got into his little beach house in Tompson were doing when he found them!

I really wouldn't recommend feeding them though - it only encourages them.

For what it's worth an Orca seems to keep their numbers down... ;)

Flying Tako 2.2
12-17-2005 20:25
Those of you who were not at Doc's races in Tompson missed the premiere of the Flying Tako 2.2. After much begging and pleading by both Nber and me at the and of the SLSF meeting this afternnon, Kanker did an upgrade to the Tako 2.1 with a silent channel so you can avoid spamming chat with your gestures for changing the sail angle.

I don't know if he put these elsewhere, but the Tako 2.2 is for sale for L$1 at
Solitude, Tompson (177, 204, 81).

It appears that penguins are not included, which is just as well...

Results of Saturday's SL-Rentals.com races
12-18-2005 03:10
Hi all. After a break the Tompson course was in use twice this weekend. Vagabonds on Friday, and a no-ROW regatta yesterday.

We had a beginner, a returner after some time away and some old regulars. We ran five races, with some chatter between them including wondering what Pix's new starts would look like (the one where she was submerged beneath my boat was the most startling to me!).

Overall results:

Eloise Pasteur 7.5
Doc Nielsen 10.75
Pixeleen Mistral 12.5
Jamie Marlin 15
Didge Nino 24

Kanker did join us for one race, but I've not included him in the overall results because it was only one race.

Individual times:

Race 1

Pix 6:11
Eloise 6:11 (and about 0.5m)
Doc 6:14
Jamie 8:33
Didge 9:09

Race 2
Eloise 5:35
Doc 6:03
Pix 6:07
Jamie 6:45
Kanker 6:56
Didge DNF (Crashed in a void)

Race 3
Eloise 6:09
Doc 6:13
Pix 6:34
Jamie 6:41
Didge 7:41

Race 4
Pix 6:09
Eloise 6;13
Doc 6:27
Jamie 6:58
Didge 7:25

Race 5
Doc 5:55
Eloise 6:03
Jamie 6:20
Didge 7:23

Two other comments:

Lack of ROW:

There were various points at which there was contact that I was involved in. By and large these were incidental, at least to the results - Doc and I had a long contact at starting and finished first and second in that race. It was more a situation where we were simply sailing too close together and we didn't have any significant impact on the race through contact.

There was a SL-special. I was crossing a sim border roughly perpendicularly, and Pix was sailing it parallel to the border. She was, clearly, in front of me and I was going to cross about 1.5 boat lengths behind her (she still had to turn, and I certainly had a better line). As I crossed the sim border Pix jumped back 2.5 boat lengths and suddenly I was taking evasive action as was she. Although I'm still in favour of a mixed set of no, and full ROW regattas, it IS a situation we'll have to address that's special to racing in SL.

There was long protracted contact between Jamie and I. We locked masts as we tried to turn to avoid each other and messed it up. This was pre-start in the final race. Looking at the times it's not clear how badly it messed us up - but I started on Starboard thanks to the tangle, Jamie started about 15-20s later than her normal start times in the other races and raced a little slower than her best time.

Improvement in skills:

It's also worth noting that Jamie showed a nice improvement with more practise, and Didge's times improved race on race as he got more confident with the course and the boat. Both could also see places where they need to improve for next time: largely related to technical improvements about changing conditions.

Thanks everyone for a friendly, fun regatta. Congratulations to Doc and SL-rentals.com for running one again. Congratulations also to Didge for his big steps forward, and good luck to both Didge and Jamie for increasing their skills even further.
