Our weekly regatta will be more fun than ever for spectators.

We have added a Widow's Watch atop the Admiral's Daughter with improved visibility of the race course. Even if you don't sail you can come and watch the excitement of competitive sailing, sailboat drag races, and sailboat soccer.

Additionally we have added the Starboards Yacht Club Broadcast System which will broadcast the chatter of the skippers in the start/finish area to specators in SYC and the Admiral's Daughter.

EVENTS:

---=== 2PM Hour ===---

1. Sailboat Soccer: Work as a group in an effort to push a giant earth ball completely around Hollywood sim. The record stands at 11m 30s. Can the time be improved. Come help and enjoy the team work.

2.Sailboat Drag Racing: This has become a popular event for beginners and veteran skippers alike. These short dashes pit boats one-on-one in contests of good trim and good turn execution. It's easy, it's good practice. And it's a lof of fun.

---=== 3PM Hour ===---

1. Regatta with ONE ROW RULE, starboard rights.

Instructions and tools will be provided for those who need to review the starboard rights rule. Skippers who sailed both the NO ROW and ONE ROW RULE races last week were pleased with added challenge of the starboard rule which added excitement without overwhelming them with lots of rules. Anyone can handle this one rule, don't shy away!

Still don't want to tackle one ROW rule? Come and enjoy the regatta in our upgraded spectator area. See you there!

VYC sailboat race results for Sat. January 14 (early and late shows)
01-15-2006 15:31
The Vagabonds Yacht Club ran two regattas saturday and the late show at 4:00 SL time had some of the best sailing I have seen in SL. Faykin, Chase, and I came directly from Chase's Pirate event (more on this later), and ran four triangle course races in the Sea of Sighs from the SLSF starting line at Torch. To show that all good things come to an end, Faykin did NOT win this event. Faykin placed 3rd overall, Chase got second, and I squeaked out ahead of Chase by one point (thanks to the throwout race!). Myrrh won the "most improved" sailor award, and will be very dangerous as she starts picking up how to call the lifts and headers on the upwind parts of the course.

Earlier saturday, VYC ran an experiment to see if there was significant interest in an early Euro-friendly event time which was a good chance to explain some strategy and tactics for open water sailing, but there were no europeans at the event, so I think we will stick to Tuesday 7 pm SL and Saturday 4 PM races for now. Between the early and late VYC races, Faykin and I (and a number of other VYC members) attended Chase's PiratesOfSL event, and did some seriously-rule-free sailing and shooting at square rigged boats with canons. I'm reccommending PiratesOfSL events for chaotic open water action, and Vagabonds Yacht Club as a way to hone your sailing skills on a somewhat more refined level. Chase and VYC will do our best to coordiate event times and water access since we are really running complimentary events.

Upcoming events to look forward to:

Tuesday 17 January 5:00 PM SL time: PiratesOfSL event

Tuesday 17 January 7:00 PM SL time: VYC/Dreamland yacht races with PRIZE MONEY 1st: L$500, 2nd: L$300, 3rd: L$150, 4th: L$75, 5th: L$50.

Weekly Regatta Report
01-16-2006 07:42
NOTE: Addtional Photos are on Display in Admiral's Daughter

HOLLYWOOD January 15, 2006 -- The new year has dawned with a new atmosphere in Hollywood. Once again Hollywood was filled with people who were there to enjoy the sport of sailboat races without rancor. Eleven skippers showed up for Sailboat Soccer and the regatta. Unfortunately for MarkTwain he had to sit out the events in order to serve as race director. Even so ten boats were present to set a new record for time in Sailboat Soccer and nine boats competed in a very exciting four race regatta.

The addition of a widow's watch above the Admiral's Daughter and the installing of the Starboards Broadcast Network that relayed the skippers chat to the Admiral's Daughter made for a very enjoyable afternoon for a spectator crowd that ranged from 8 to 12 over the course of the two hours.

The atmosphere at times seemed almost giddy with all the fun people were having. Sailboat Soccer was a big hit. But more importantly, racing with one right of way rule (Rule 10 -- boats on starboard tack have rights over boats on port tack) seemed to be the perfect balance of creating an orderly race without intimidating skippers off the water for fear of breaking the rules. The availability of a simple HUD device (available dock side in Hollywood) that reminded people of which tack they were on may have helped both this week and last week when the tool was introduced. Trust me folks, said MarkTwain, if you can handle SL avatars you are smart enough to handle this one simple rule. And that attitude seems to have taken hold. The fleet ranged from experienced veteran skippers to first time skippers. All were able to race together enjoyably without incident.

The days events got off to a riotously funny running of two sailboat soccer games. This is a cooperative event where the combined fleet move a giant earth ball completely around Hollywood Island in an attempt to better prior best times in the event. In the first game it looked to be certain that the old record of 11min 30sec would fall as the fleet swept down on the finish line with a minute to spare. Unfortunately the earthball struck the finish line marker and bounced away from the line. By the time the fleet could turn the earth around and push it across the line the clock read 11min 55sec.

Skippers voted to have a second game and they performed magnificently pushing the earthball across the line in record time, 9min 10sec.

For the regatta, the Short Course was used. Four races were run with at throw out (a skipper’s worst race was thrown out). Nine boats competed. The regatta ended in a tie for first place between Chase Speculaas and Faykin Odets. See photo below regarding their decision to break the tie in an unusual but very entertaining fashion.

SYC Practice Race Dates Changed
01-16-2006 19:15
For some time now SYC has held practice races at varying times of the week with Tuesdays having been the most common night. Indeed the Tuesday at 6PM time slot was adopted two weeks ago after having tried other times. The times for formal practice races has always been posted in SYC. Normally this hasn't been heavily promoted nor heavily attended. However with other sailing events now scheduled on Tuesdays we have decided to move our practice races event to THURSDAYS at 6PM.

However Nber and I will be on the water tomorrow Tuesday for those of you that were already planning to attend (I know of at least two that told me they had scheduled Tuesday). So this week only we we have TWO practice race sessions.

For everyone's information here is the schedule of sailing events in Hollywood.

two sailing events for tuesday january 17
01-17-2006 06:08
Catch the two extremes of sailing: yacht racing with the normal rules, and pirate combat with no rules :-)

-------------------
Sailboat races/regatta sponsored by Dreamland/Vagabonds Yacht Club

Meet at 7:00 in Central Park(94,14) for race instructions, then we will TP to the SLSF start line in Torch and try to sail at least 4 races on the Sea of Sighs. Dreamland is co-sponsoring this race series with Vagabonds Yacht Club, so there is prize money: 1st: L$500, 2nd: L$300, 3rd: L$150, 4th: L$75, 5th: L$50. Spectators, beginners, and experienced sailors welcome!

------------------
Naval Battle: Pirate Combat by Chase Speculaas

Hey pirates, same plan as last week! We'll get together in Periwinkle at 5pm, and head out to the open seas of Cyclops at 5:15pm. I hope to get together about 4 ships, each with a captain and 2 more crew members. Then we'll try a couple battles with teams of 2 ships.

If you've never been aboard a Speculaas Pirate Ship before, try to show up a little early so we can show you the ropes. I'll hand out the HUDs there so you can control the cannons, and only captains need to have ships.

interested in sailing
01-17-2006 08:42
Hi everyone,
I am new to SL and when I saw you had sailing races I almost died. I love sailing and experience in doing sunfishes in real life. I would love to take a course first on the boat, but would love to know where I can purchase one for myself. Any information would be greatly appriciated and I hope to join your races soon.

Hey Jemster. Welcome to SL. You can buy a Flying Tako at a dozen places, including Hollywood, Tompson, FairChang Island, Gray, Busy Ben's in Oak Grove... We race in the Flying Tako 2.2 Racing Version. You've probably read all about the races in this thread. If you want to join in the next regatta, make sure you practice first. Or you can ask to ride along with a racer for your first time. When you get your boat and have rezzed it on the water, right-click on the stern, choose "sit," and say "notecard."

VYC/Dreamland sailboat race results for tuesday january 17
01-18-2006 17:44
Tuesday night VYC ran 4 races in the Sea of Sighs, and had some of the closest racing I have ever seen in SL. The margin between first and second place in two of the 4 races was just 1 second! This was for races that take over 6 minutes to run and cover at least 7-8 sims. ElroyBob Nabob (a first time racer) successfully navigated the offshore course in his first try, then lost his boat in the second race. But as Myrrh said, he did a lot better in his first race than I did. Myrrh and Pacifien continue to improve, and reported submarine sightings during one of the races.

Observations: There seems to be no penalty to carrying a passenger in a race, since Chase did so for all four races (winning one, and finishing 1 second behind me in two of the others).

Upcoming events:
Saturday 21 January 4:00 PM SL time: VYC weekend regatta

Great Tool for Sailboat Racing
01-18-2006 18:28
I have experimented recently with some HUD radars looking for a means to help folks increase their situational awareness during a race. The Drifting Thoughts HUD worked well with both the Tako 2.2 and the upcoming Tako 3.0.

I contacted the designer of the product and arranged for a custom designed HUD, removing some of the extraneous features and streamlining the product for sailing purposes. The result is the Dream Thoughts HUD Lite. It's available at Starboards Yacht Club in Hollywood for $125L. It's also available at Kanker's place in Grey.

Both Kanker and I think this is a slick product and will definitely help you to be a better racer. Check it out!

HUD radar
01-20-2006 05:14
I tried the HUD radar in the practice races at Starboards last night and it worked really well.

Just two comments.

It seemed a little slow. It didn't help me getting barged at the start. Of course that just could have been lag problems which I was experiencing - from my ISP not SL. I'll try it again the next races and see how it works.

Could it be a little smaller? I felt it took up too much screen. Maybe just personnal preference.

In any case, it still represents progress and adds to the sailing excitement in SL.

If you are interested, you can try it out in offshore sailing conditions at the VYC yacht races saturday 4 PM SL time at Torch (252,143). I'm curious to see if the HUD causes any lag for you and if it confers any advantage for those who use it in actual racing conditions.

VYC race results for the Sea of Sighs January 17, 2006 races
01-21-2006 20:05
VYC ran four races in the sea of sighs and put seven (7)! boats on the line for all four races. Three of the seven racers were new to VYC and blue water racing, but I think they had a good time, and it was good to see that we could pull off an event with a large (for SL) fleet.

Scoring was interesting, because there were two ties on points. Since we sail under normal racing rules, resolving ties is simple: we just look at how the two tied boats did in head-to-head competition in the most last race in the series. So, our results are:

official race results:
1.) Pixeleen Mistral 0.75 0.75 0.75 - 2.25pts.
2.) Myrrh Massiel 3 - 2 0.75 5.75 pts.
3.) Pacifien Massiel 2 5 - 3 10 pts.
4.) mush Caldera 5 2 3 - 10 pts.
5.) Mel Fitzcarraldo 4 3 4 - 11 pts.
6.) Al Kaiser - 7 7 4 18 pts.
7.) Silkie Muir - 6 5 7 18 pts.

without the throwout race there is a threeway tie and a two way tie, but again, we can order the results based on the last race run:

Pixeleen Mistral 0.75 0.75 0.75 0.75 2 4.25
Myrrh Massiel 3 4 2 0.75 9.75
Pacifien Massiel 2 5 6 3 16
Mel Fitzcarraldo 4 3 4 5 16
mush Caldera 5 2 3 6 16
Al Kaiser DSQ(8) 7 7 4 26
Silkie Muir DNF(8) 6 5 7 26

Commentary: After we were done racing I asked Al Kaiser how the "situational awareness" HUD thingy worked for him. He said it resulted in more lag and used up too much screen, so he only used it for the first race. Hopefully someone else will try this HUD more and we can see if it is really beneficial.

HUD Performance in Private Sim vs Void Sims

Hi Al,

Glad that you found that it worked well in Hollywood. The designer of the HUD put 10 of them out in Hollywood as a test and determined that the lag effect was very small. The 1 sec scan took 2 seconds. If you had trouble in races in venues using void sims and sim border crossings, it might be the increased lag inherit there. We have not had those problems in Hollywood, so you might find that the HUD works well where lag is inheritly low and not as well in other venues.

Will be interested to hear your thoughts on the HUD after tomorrows races in Hollywood as compared to the races today.

As to size, not much to do about that. for me it is very transparent and causes no difficulty. Keep in mind that this product already exists and was modfied to keep lag low. So size is size, like parts it parts. :)

For what it is worth I run mine at 48m range with 1 second scans.

Weekly Regatta Sunday 2PM
01-21-2006 20:38
We are expecting a good turn out for our weekly regatta after the nine boat turn out for formal practice on Thursday and an impromptu practice on Saturday with Nber, Faykin, Kanker, myself, and 4 other skippers.

EVENTS for SUNDAY January 22

---=== 2PM Hour ===---

Sailboat Drag Racing: This has become a popular event for beginners and veteran skippers alike. These short dashes pit boats one-on-one in contests of good trim and good turn execution. It's easy, it's good practice. And it's a lot of fun.

---=== 3PM Hour ===---

1. Regatta with ONE ROW RULE, starboard rights.

Starboard Rights Regattas and practices have worked very well. If you are still getting comfortable with starboard rights rules be sure to get your copies of the Starboard Rights HUD device. Skippers tell me it really helps them remember which tack they are on.

We will have four races of the SHORT course, with one throw out. The follow week we will switch to the LONG course.

Still don't want to tackle one ROW rule? Come and enjoy the regatta in our upgraded spectator area. See you there!

Certainly you can buy a Tako 2.2 in HOLLYWOOD at the Starboards Yacht Club. If you plan to do any racing you will want to buy the "racing"version. There is a "touring" version available as well. Each costs 1L.

TAKOs are also for sale inFairChang Island, Honawan, Tompson, Kanker's home in Grey, and the SLSF place in Gualala.

However the totally new TAKO 3.0 is supposed to be available "any day now". Unfortunately it will be priced considerable more than 1L. Whatever the price turns out to be, however, it will definitely be worth it.

Weekly Regatta Report
01-24-2006 05:39
HOLLYWOOD Jan. 22, 2006 -- In an amazing day of racing 10 skippers competed in 4 races with every skipper completing every race. No DNFs (did not finish) and no DNS's (did not start). Every skipper should be congratulated, and with one exception (mentioned below) Hollywood Sim performed well, with no one missing any part of a race from sim problems. There would have been 12 boats in the regatta but MarkTwain and Nber Medici decided to coordinate the regatta rather than add two more boats to the already large fleet.

The day started with the always exciting Sailboat Drag Races. MarkTwain added some spice to the mix with his "misinterpretaton" of DRAG races. With visions of Rebel Without a Cause and American Graffitti, Mark started each race while dressed in a pink poodle skirt.

Caption: Mark and Nber during the "drag" races. Anyone looking up Mark's skirt saw a modesty object that said "You're a pervert."

In the drag race finals Chase Speculaas prevailed. Faykin Odets crossed the lane line and was disqualified. New week we will return to Sailboat Soccer.

Congratulatioins to Faykin Odets our weekly regatta winner. And contraluations to each and every skipper. The races were very competative and well raced by all.

There was a very interesting slow down in sim excution during race 2. Details can be found in a posting in the TECHNICAL ISSUES here:
/111/c0/84211/1.html

Race Results

1. Faykin Odets 3.50
2. Chase Speculaas 4.75
3. Myrrh Massiel 6.75
4. PENNIE Sassoon 11.00
5. Cerulia Moxie 16.00
6. CK Eponym 18.00

What news of the "situational awareness HUD" thingy?
01-25-2006 17:24
Were any people using the situational awareness HUD thingamabob for last Sunday's Hollywood races? I'd be interested see if there is any clear correlation between using this and placing well in races. Perhaps someone can post updated race results with a notation of who used/didn't use the HUD so that everyone can see if this idea works under actual race conditions?

...i didn't use any sort of HUD last sunday...i sail with all my graphics options cranked down to their absolute mimimum, in a quarter-screen window, my hard drive still crunching away on memory swaps the entire time - the virtual equivalent of keeping my eyes squinched tight on a sunny day...so for me, situational awareness is limited to my mini-map...
...talking with other skippers, i've gathered that the HUDs are a wonderful tool for helping people learn ROW situations but as full-blown radar they bog down considerably under heavy communications lag...perhaps this had something to do with our crippling time dilation last sunday?..

...it'll be interesting to note how the tako 3's integral HUD controls affect sim performance under large-scale race conditions...

Only one skipper was using the HUD RADAR LITE at the time of the time dilation incident. I am hopeful that I was clear about what happened in that incident which can be read here:/111/c0/84211/1.html

Clearly the time dilation event was due to having some nearly twenty avatars with typical numbers of attachments moving all at the same time in 10 boats of 18 prims and scripts. Once the passengers cleared off the boats time dilation returned to normal. Also, it should be noted while everyone slowed to a crawl for about three minutes which the sim recovered no one had crashed or had serious problems with their positions.

The HUD LITE has been tested by Kanker, Nber, and myself in conditions where many boats were racing, to good result (this being prior my arraging with the designer to make a sailing version and certianly prior to the unrelated time dilation event). However the testing was in the low lag private sim environment of Hollywood. It certainly is worthwhile to compare the function of this stripped down HUD (optimized for sailing) in the void sim races and mutliple border crossings with their inherit issues problems. Skippers should also be noting the times that they lose Tako wind in those races as it continues to be an issue I am told. Kanker feels however that the new TAKO might solve at least that one issue in the void sim races (loss of SL wind).

FYI if anyone wonders: the HUD LITE profits go to the designer, not myself, SYC, or Hollywood. My purpose in providing HUD LITE to the commmunity is strictly to provide a better SL experience for all (in this instance specifically for sailboat racing). That is the goal for Nber and myself all that we provide in Hollywood.

...wow mark; thanks so much for going to the trouble to clarify who was using the HUDs on sunday - that's a lot of skippers to track down!..you're probably right that in a bluewater sailing environment, HUD radar is just one more delayed update upon a sim border crossing, but it may well not be any worse than what we already experience...

...i'm still unconvinced that sunday's time dilation mightn't have been an anomalous server hiccup - i'd experienced several intances of time dilation (albeit not as severe) in various locations throughout grid that day, and our first race ran without significant problems...regardless, SYC's new widow's walk is a wonderful place for spectators to watch the regatta below, and if you feel more comfortable stripping down crews during large turnouts i'm not going to belabor the point... :)
