Hollywood Expansion Revealed
02-27-2006 02:30
HOLLYWOOD Feb. 27, 2006 -- Rumor in the local gossip columns has it that Hollywood insiders MarkTwain White and Nber Medici have been working quitely in the background for a couple of months to expand their holdings in Second Life to included the recently discovered Channel Islands to the north and south of Hollywood. Pending final discussions with Linden Labs, the additional new sims (which should be added to the grid any day now) will not only triple the sailing space available to Starboards Yacht Club members, it will also provide four island homes to four lucky skippers. :)

The two new sims will have two islands each of 4096 square meters and 800 prim allowance. The lease cost will be US$50 per month. The four lucky skippers who become residents in the Channel Islands will have not only the luxury of only a single neighbor (seperated by a channel) but will be a major supporter of the expanded racing, cruising, and pirating activities in the triple expanded Starboards Yacht Club sailing venue.

At this point four skippers have already indicated their desire to aquire the islands. However cost details were not firm at the time of their application. SYC is taking back up offers on the islands. Contact Mark Twain White or Nber Medici ASAP if interested.

Additional Note: Recent seismic activity in the area indicate the possibility of a 5th 4096 sm island appearing in the southern new region as well. Details not available at press time.

Silkie Muir wins VYC's regatta and is february's top-ranked sailor

VYC Race results for february 28, 2006
- pixeleen mistral

Tuesday february 28, VYC ran its 20th regatta and had a good turnout (10 competitors). We ran three triangle course races inside Sanchon sim while Kanker Greenacre sat inside the one of the starting line buoys and watched. Then we enticed him into his boat for the long course in our 4th race. For this regatta the long course was extended from our recent Sanchon-to-Osondoson course. After reaching Osondoson, the course headed east and then south to the Yeanim sim, then back to Jingi, past the island and back to the start/finish line. This gives us a race course that crosses about 35-40 sims (around 20 sims out to Yeanim, and few less on the way back) and takes 12 - 18 minutes to complete depending on the wind, your navigational skills, and luck. Luck does seem to play some role, since Myrrh found a way to sail her boat aground and into the outhouse by the Pirates’ Pub in the 4th race... for some reason everyone gave her a wide berth after that incident. On the other hand, when we score the races, you get to throw out your worst race, so a little bad luck does not hurt.

Four different people posted wins (Myrrh, Pacifien, Silkie, and me), but again, Silkie’s consistency won the regatta for her. In terms of standings, probably the closest racing was between Pacifien and Myrrh. Pacifien finished just far enough ahead of Myrrh to move ahead of her in the February standings. Edelwulf improved his standings significantly as well, and Apu Pontoppidan made a fine debut in the VYC racing scene.

upcoming events in Sanchon:
wed 7 pm: PiratesOfSL Naval Battles/blockade -Chase Speculaas
sat 4 pm: VYC’s first regatta of march (flying tako sailboats) - pixeleen mistral
mon 7 pm: PiratesOfSL practice battles and tactics - Bobby Troughton/Static Sproket
tue 7 pm: VYC sailboat regatta (flying tako sailboats) - pixeleen mistral
...and stop by anytime to sail or hang out in the pirates pub

Weekly Regatta Results
03-01-2006 11:12
HOLLYWOOD Feb. 26, 2006 -- SYC's two acting Commodores, MarkTwain White and Nber Medici did not race this week. MarkTwain was chasing whales and dolphins in RL. Nber was running the regatta until called away on a family matter. SYC's third Commodore, Kanker Greenacre stepped up to the plate to help run the regatta. SYC welcomes new skippers Geoff Gavaskar and Lookfar Callisto. Due to the lower turnout the regatta was not split into A and B fleets.

Congrats to our winner, Kanker Greenacre!

Pacifien Massiel wins Saturday March 4th Vagabonds Yacht Club regatta

We tried sailing out of Sanchon on a southeasterly wind, and did four triangle courses and two long around the continent races. Because the wind had been set from the north for our previous events in Sanchon, this changed the feel of the course, particularly for the long course, since the run out to the Osondoson area is now a long upwind leg. This sort of course (long upwind leg, like in the course in Torch) seems to be good for Pacifien, who won a pair of races and was consistently in the front of the pack. I got a pair of wins, but was inconsistent, and struggled in the long races. Myrrh and I both got nailed by a rogue windsetter in the last race. While I know that the Tako 3.1 and the new starting line works to keep the wind set (I helped with the testing, and it works), it appears that this may not continue to work if you have the same boat rezzed for a long time. I know that I was sailing the same boat for 90 minutes saturday, and in the future I’m going to rez a new Tako before each long race.

SYC held 4 LONG course races (one throw out race) with a single fleet of skippers. In the absence of MarkTwain White, Nber Medici with the able assistance of Myrrh Massiel managed the regatta (A BIG thanks to Myrrh for scoring the races. Nber is going to HAVE to learn how to do this ) Ship Wreck Point did its duty on both Kanker and mush. Apu (a new skipper to the Hollywood venue) improved steadily over the day. Final rankings were:

Tied for first: Kanker Greenacre and Myrrh Massiel
(a sword fight was proposed to resolve the tie, but no swords were available)
Third Place: Pennie Sassoon
Fourth Place: mush Caldera
Fifth Place: Apu Pontoppidan
Sixth Place: Al Kaiser
Seventh Place: jemster Hartnell

After the results were announced, Nber Medici wrapped her fingers around her *WAND* and demonstrated the power of the wand. All present were amazed at what they saw. If YOU weren't there, and want to see it.... you have to come to next week's Regatta. If you WERE there, shhhhh... let the others be amazed .

Vagabonds Yacht Club race results for Tuesday March 7: Pacifien wins again!
03-08-2006 20:04
Pacifien Massiel’s winning streak continues

Pacifien won her second VYC regatta in a row tuesday night, and is currently this month’s top-ranked sailor. We had a good turn out (11 boats) which made for some very exciting starts, and braving all the commotion was ZATZAi made her racing debut with VYC. We ran 4 short triangle course races, and 2 long races down the western side fo the continent. After the races were over, Pacifien stayed on the water to explain the fine points of her sailing technique while I retired to the pub to calculate results, and then we talked though a number of right of way scenarios using a map of Sanchon/Jinsil and some small boats that Static Sprocket and ZATZAi made. I think this kind of post race post-mortem is going to become a regular feature, since it is a good way to explain the rules without holding up the racing action. This sort of thing (race, then talk about it after the sailing is over for the day) is exactly how I learned sailing in RL, so it felt like home.

Sunday Sailing Events in Hollywood
03-11-2006 09:02
In order to increase sailing opportunties to the many folks who have expressed interest in sailing but have not become involved we are restructuring the events schedule in Hollywood to reach out to those interested in sailing. Here is the new schedule for Sunday sailing events in Hollywood:

1PM -- NOVICE SAILING LESSONS
This will begin each week with an classroom slide show lesson designed to get novices in the water and sailing. Although the basics will be covered in each lesson, the secon half of the lesson will introduce a new topic each week.

Those who don't need the classroom lesson are encouraged to come and practice. If you are an experienced skipper you are asked to attend and offer your services as a ride along coach. We will provide instructions for both coaches and those that would like a coach to help them master the techniques of sailing the Tako sailboat. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS as coachs. Coaches need not be expert sailors. Any skipper who knows how to tack and trim sails with confidence can fulfill this role.

A NOVICE RACE WILL BE HELD AT THE END OF CLASS. ALL NOVICES THAT RACE WILL BE GIVEN $50L. THE WINNER OF THE NOVICE RACE WILL BE GIVEN A TAKO 3.1 AS A PRIZE! :D

2PM -- We will return to our popular FUN SAILING events at 2pm. SAILBOAT DRAG RACING, and SAILBOAT SOCCER are designed to be fun activites that teach you sailing skills. Also, one on one lessons can occur at this time.

3PM -- Our weekly regatta will be help in this time slot. If we have more than nine boats sailing we will divide the fleet into "A" and "B" fleets (based on turn out) and two trophies will be awarded.

Hi MarkTwain - I'm not suggesting that you change your schedules for me, but do note that for some of us in the +XX hours GMT timezones the times do turn out to be Monday morning (i.e. work day :(). Timezone differences for SL do make it difficult I know, in terms of maximising number of potential players (noting I'm guess there's probably more people out of the USA) I'm wondering whether some time on Saturday (PST) would be optimal. I wonder if there's been discussion on this elsewhere in the forums generally.

Anyway again, not asking you to change anything just for me.

Cheers

European-time-zone Regatta in Development!
03-11-2006 22:46
Hiya Greg!

Your concern is well-noted, and in fact we've discussed just this issue, european-friendly events, at a recent SLSF meeting. Presently we're a touch short on demand and manpower to stage such an event, but keep your eyes peeled because plans are in the works to debut european-friendly races at a third venue within the next month!

Notices will be posted here, of course, as well as the usual event calendars, but a great way to keep abreast of develpments in the sailing community is through the Second Life Sailing Federation forums.

Don't be shy about making your opinion known there! Our last attempt at hosting a european series folded when only a subset of north americans showed up - no europeans.

Hi Greg,

Myrrh's comments are right on the mark. SYC has in the long past held events in a Euro friendly time slot with results as Myrrh indicated. More recently VYC did the same. With Myrrh's more Euro centered sim planning some Euro friendly racing events in the future perhaps she can get a core established. SYC would love to host events for you XX+GMT skippers. If enough of you make your feelings known and/or Myrrh's efforts draw you in then we will host Euro events as well.

Weekly Regatta
03-13-2006 13:11
HOLLYWOOD Mar 12, 2006 --The new sailing schedule in Hollywood was a big hit this past Sunday. More than 16 skippers sat in on the novice lesson, eight skippers raced in a special novice race (along with a coach with each boat). A similar number participated in sailboat soccer in the 2PM hour. And at 3PM eight skippers, some of them from the novice class, sailed in a five race short course regatta.

NOVICE CLASS AND RACE

Including novices and coaches more than 15 skippers sat in on the novice slideshow lesson taught by MarkTwain White. The lesson, incorporating imagery of a Tako sailboat and HUD detail, showed in a easy to follow format how sailboats respond to wind and how to control the wind by use of sail and rudder controls. The well received lesson is available for viewing in the Admiral’s Daughter.

Novices then raced in a short course race. Unfortunately we were not clear that only complete novices (not having sailed in prior SLSF events) were supposed to be in the race. Also while we specified that the spinnaker would not be used in the lesson, we did not clarify clearly enough that spinnakers were not to be used in the race. Count these a oversights due to the new format and will be corrected next week. Perhaps the race will be opened to some novices who have dabbled in SLSF races but the winner of the Tako 3.1 will be the top finishing skipper who is racing for the first time.

Novice Race (16 participating)
1: Sifu Luan - +00:05:21
2: Gryphe Padar - +00:05:39
3: Meadow Golding - +00:05:47
4: seonaid McLean - +00:06:46
5: Jemster Hartnell - +00:07:24
6: Selador Cellardoor - +00:07:24
7: Maxie Claveau - +00:08:13
Apu Pontoppidan was the "pace boat"

ED. NOTE: Due to the careless actions of the febble old cogger running the novice race (he must have skipped his Geritol that morning) it was not made clear who could be in the race. He also did not clarify that spinnakers should not have been used. Consequently Apu Pontoppidan unknowningly participated in the novice only race. He has graciously surrended all the fame and glory that came his way based on winning the race. The dancing girls have been sent back to SLSF and MarkTwain has gone into exile. This posting has been modified to reflect that Sifu Luan was the legitimate winner. Unless of course Sifu turns out not to be a novice as well. Grin.

ED. NOTE 2: MarkTwain remained in exile for one hour and twenty minutes.

Coaches that rode along: Al Kaiser, Chase Speculass, Kanker Greenacre, MarkTwain White, Myrrh Massiel, Nber Medici, and two others (someone IM MarkTwain with the other coaches’ names please).

ABOVE: A slide from the Novice Class, lesson one. The slide show is available in the Admiral's Daughter.

ABOVE: Novice class on the water.

SAILBOAT SOCCER
Always a crowd pleaser, sailboat soccer kept us all hopping as records were set for the event (using average wind speed of 9m/s). The second race produced a time of 5:25 in getting the earth (soccer) ball pushed around the island. We will keep separate records for soccer based on average wind speed. The record at 7m/s average speed is x:xx.

WEEKLY REGATTA

Myrrh Massiel repeated as the SYC weekly regatta winner this week as we sailed five short course races with a throughout. Nber Medici made a consistent showing to capture second place. Several novice skippers participated and seemed to have learned well the lessons they learned in class. It got a bit messy on the water in regards to starboard rights but no one called a protest. We hope in time that skippers will not only master the starboard rights rule (Rule 10), but begin to exercise starboard rights on the water.

Regatta Results

1. Myrrh Massiel 5.50
2. Nber Medici 7.75
3. MarkTwain White 12.75
4. Apu Pontoppidan 16.00
5. Sifu Luan 17.00
6. Meadow Golding 18.00
7. Static Sprocket 20.00
8. Maxie Claveau 28.00

sat march 18 VYC race results and march sailor rankings
03-19-2006 11:27
Saturday we ran 7 races: 5 of the new short course triangle flavor, and two long races. I was definately having a bad day and finished last in both long course races. Myrrh seemed to be having a good day again, Chase made one of his all too rare apearances and got second, and Apu finished with a very respecable thrid place overall.

Now that we are about half way through march, it is interesting to look at overall rankings. Myrrh has built up a good lead, but after her, things are much closer. I think Silkie would be ahead of me if she had not had a phone call to deal with (which kept her out of a couple races saturday). Pacifien, Silkie and I are all within striking distance of each other. mush, Mel, Static, and Apu are also clustered together, so it is hard to say how things will turn out, but this month, Myrrh is the one to beat.

march sailor rankings to date (262 total possible points):
1 Myrrh Massiel 193 0.737
2 Pacifien Massiel 168 0.641
3 Pixeleen Mistral 158 0.603
4 Silkie Muir 154 0.588

Weeky Regatta Report
03-26-2006 05:39
HOLLYWOOD March 19, 2006 – Myrrh Massiel continued her own personal March Madness by winning a third straight weekly regatta. Afterwards MarkTwain set up a press room for Myrrh to announce her retirement. Myrrh was a no show. Twain commented “I guess we are going to have to beat Myrrh on the water instead of with strong are tactics.” ;)

The novice race was won by all “around” nice guy, 314.

Editor’s Notes: First, we apologize for the lateness of this report. With the discovery of the 4 new island/sims around Hollywood this past week, our staff has been extremely busy. Second, some fool apparently didn’t properly save our original report and overwrote the actual race results file. So there is no per position report available this week. A paper backup exists however. :(

3/25 VYC results: 8 races, 1 adventure, and 1 written protest = 1 double foul
03-26-2006 20:21
Saturday, VYC ran our usual 4 PM event and competed (unsucessfully)
with the NCAA baskeball tournament for SL sailors' attention. The small
fleet we had meant that we did get more races run than usual in spite
of the race director's Macintosh crashing repeatedly. SL version 1.9
is trying your race directors patience in a very big way...

We ran 4 short triangle courses inside Sanchon sim, then had a real
adventure in open ocean sailing by setting up a windward-leeward course
in the 12 water sims that connect the northern mainland with the
bulk-auction mainland sims. I stumbled into this patch of water after
property Resistance dragged me to Picasso sim (which is really lovely
in a moorish sort of way... and I bought a great dress there).

In any case, there is a 60 minute auto-return
set on the water in the void sims linking the continents, so you feel
a certain sense of urgency about getting the staring line and bouys
set, and running the races before the course starts disappearing.
Slow paced tours of the region with historical commentary is not
the optimal approach here. By simplying running races without chatter,
we managed 4 long-format races before our bouys and starting line
disappeared.

We also manged to get the first formal (written) protest filed at a VYC
event. This was interesting because it was (as far as I know) only the
second written protest filed in SL sailing history. For this protest
yours truely was NOT one of the principles (thanks your fave god/godess),
and since we were a slightly short on sailors, while wearing my race
director hat, I appointed myself the protest committee in the interest
of getting the issue resolved in a timely fashion. A bit of RL intervened
when one of my two cats died :-( , but we did resolve the issue in under
24 hours.

The protest involved boat A going upwind close hauled on starboard
hitting boat B (also headed upwind close hauled) on port tack.
Boat A collided with the center of boat B (a T-bone collision, for
those who like colorful jargon). The protest commitee determined that
boat A did not hail boat B before the collision, and neither boat
altered course before the collision. In light of this, the protest
committee disqualified BOTH boats for the race.

Starboard tack does have right of way, but is well advised to
hail the other boat far in advance of a collision. Hailing the other boat
helps establish that you gained right of way far enough in advance
of the collision that the other boat can react, and also clearly
alerts the port tack boat that they need to alter course
to avoid collision. Further, the boat on starboard should (if possible)
alter course to avoid collion once it becomes clear that the port tack
boat is not going to alter course. T-bone jobs generally look bad to
protest committees...

In RL sailing you can file (and usually win) protests without colliding with
the other boat if you can establish that you had right of way, and
they could have (but did not) get out of the way. My advice to sailors
is to hail the other boat early, present a chat log along with the
written protest (if it comes to that), and consider taking a snapshot
of the scene, since this would help establish that reasonable
care was taken. Note that while both boats are oblidged to attempt
to avoid collision, it is the opinion of this protest committee that
once the boat with right of way has hailed the other boat, the boat
without right of way has a great burden in avoiding collision.

The ironic part of this incident is that both the boats involved
used this race as one of their throw outs races. Still, this was
a useful exercise in illustrating how the formal protest process
can work, and to establish some precident for how to behave on
the water.

Bottom line: starboard would have won the protest had she
1.) hailed the other boat
2.) made some attempt to avoid collision
Lacking this, the protest committe found it to be in the best
interests of the sport to DSQ (disqualify) both boats.

Weekly Regatta in SYC's new sailing complex (results)
03-29-2006 20:43
For the second week in a row SYC skippers appeared to skip the NCAA basketball playoffs to turn out in force. Fourteen skippers turned out for the novice race and weekly regatta. Myrrh Massiel's dominance of our weekly regatta series continued as she showed off her ocean sailing skills on the Santa Rosa course in SYC's new Channel Islands sailing complex.

The novice race was won by Jonty Peel. Congrats to all the novices that have been attending our recent classes. They are getting a good foundation for the future.

Between the novice class and the regatta MarkTwain took the fleet on a tour of the new Channel Islands. A fleet of at least a dozen boats participated in the tour and raft-up that included commentary about the new race courses, history of each of the islands, and "featured" MarkTwain singing when the fleet arrived at Santa Catalina. Everyone enjoyed the tour despite Twain's croaking voice singing "twenty six miles across the sea".

The nice thing about having five sailing dedicated sims to play in means we can, as needed, modify the sims for special activites. Raise islands for an obstacle course? No problem. Rezz forts across the sims and do some rum-running against revenue boats past forts waiting with cannon bearing on you? Piece of cake. And its always nice to be able to chat a bit between races rather than feel rushed to beat an auto return feature.

However all isn't goodness and light. We DID experience some hud and sail updating delays on Sunday. LL and most of of that experienced the problem feel that it was an anomoly. We have raced more boats before and after the Sunday regatta without incident. Next Sunday will be an interesting test.
