Vagabonds Yacht Club in Sanchon Sim Race results for Tuesday February 21

Silkie Muir was back in form posting a pair of first place finishes in the long course and two second place finishes in the short triangle course to win the regatte and snap Mel Fitzcarraldo 2 regatta winning streak . Silkie and I both benefitted greatly from having a throwout race, since this let us drop some really bad races. Without the thowout race both Silkie and I would have falled one place in the standings. Hoever, in the official results I just squeaked past Pacifien on a tie breaker (we had identical scores, but I beat Pacifien in the last race). Note that first place finishes were spread around: we ran 5 races and 4 different people won races. This was a relatively large fleet (9 boats) and I got to sail woth both some old friends who I ve not seen for a while and some regulars. After the racing was done, we retired to the Pirates Pub for drinks, dancing, and movies. As I write this, I see pirate ships crusiing Sanchon preparing for wednesday's pirate battles. Hey! they are firing on me... time to move to higher ground.

Since we just ran our 17th (!) regatta saturday, I though it would be interesting to do an overall, and a monthly ranking of sailors. Scoring this sort of long running series is a little bit of a challenge, but by using the high-point scoring system we can come up with a ranking that takes into account how many boats you beat (so winning in a large fleet is a plus) and does not penalize you for sailing in a race even if you come in last. This system appeals to me, since the goal is to get more people out racing, and rewards ought to accrue to those who show up consistently and sail well. Perhaps I am being a bit selfish here, since I have only missed 2 VYC regattas. You can read about the tradeoffs in scoring system here: http://www.ussailing.org/rules/down...ies_Scoring.pdf. For our purposes, I’m assuming that we qualify someone for ranking if they manage to complete at least one race.

The high point scoring works like this: if there are 8 boats competing, the boat in first place gets 8 points, second place gets 7 points, and so on... Even the last place finisher gets a point, and the people who did not sail are the only real losers (a disqualification or no finish = no points). I’m scoring this with no throw out races, and for your convenience also calculating a percentage (something like a batting average, I am told). The fraction is how many points a given racer scored compared to the theoretical maximum.

Here are the monthly scores, followed by the overall rankings. Note that we have had 25 sailors compete with VYC. That is almost exactly one quarter our membership.

Vagabonds Yacht Club race results for february 26, 2006

Our 19th event acted as the racing debut of the Flying Tako version 3.1, and we gave the new version a workout in a variety of conditions ranging from zero wind (yes, I accidentally did it again, but I swear I will NEVER EVER set the wind to zero again) to 18-25. The first four races were the short triangle course, and then we celebrated the liberation of Danbi from the build-blockade by sailing two around-the-continent courses. I want to personally thank Kazanture Aleixandre for taking the time to remove the ban left behind by a former tenant; this made it possible for us to easily sail up the eastern cost of the korean-named continent. Three cheers for Kaz!

The Tako 3.1 has one new feature that is important for the sort of blue water sailing we do when we venture outside of Sanchon. The 3.1 will ignore windsetters from the time it passes the starting line at the start, until you cross the line at the finish. The need for this feature became clear several weeks ago when we started noticing that some people (but not everyone) would pick up wind settings from windsetters outside Sanchon, so that some parts of the fleet had significantly different (and generally lower) wind than others. mush Caldera ran into exactly this problem in the last two races. Serious racers will want to upgrade to a Tako 3.1 if possible. Thanks to Kanker Greenacre for producing both a new starting line and a new version of the Tako to fix the problem. The SLSF starting lines in Sanchon and Torch have both been upgraded.

There were three sailors who won 2 races each, but Silkie's consistency put her ahead of everyone else again. Mel took second place, and Myrrh was impressive in third place. I decided to try a hot pink colored boat against Myrrh's advice, and learned the hard way that hot pink is a slow color. I'm not sailing that boat anymore...

With one regatta to go in february, here are the VYC sailor rankings. These rankings are based on high point scoring of races. The more competitors you finish ahead of, the more points you gain... you get a point for each competitor you finish ahead of in each race. This sort of scoring system rewards both attendance (since you will get at least 1 point for every race you complete) and finishing well in large fleets (since you can finish ahead of more competitors if the fleet is larger).

At this point, baring a complete breakdown, Silkie (235 pts) appears to have february locked up. Mel (218 pts) might be able to catch her if there is a good turnout tuesday and he finishes ahead of a lot of people, but we would need to pick up 18 more points than Silkie to pull ahead. Another way of looking at this is to say that Mel needs to finish 3 places ahead of Silkie in 6 races to get ahead of her.

It gets very interesting when we look at Pacifien(74 pts), Myrrh (79 pts) , and mush (71 pts) who are all within striking distance of each other. A good (or bad) race for any of this group and the rankings will change. Henri, Geoff and Lookfar are also closely bunched, and it is likely that the ranking could changes for them.

VYC Race results for february 28, 2006

Tuesday february 28, VYC ran its 20th regatta and had a good turnout (10 competitors). We ran three triangle course races inside Sanchon sim while Kanker Greenacre sat inside the one of the starting line buoys and watched. Then we enticed him into his boat for the long course in our 4th race. For this regatta the long course was extended from our recent Sanchon-to-Osondoson course. After reaching Osondoson, the course headed east and then south to the Yeanim sim, then back to Jingi, past the island and back to the start/finish line. This gives us a race course that crosses about 35-40 sims (around 20 sims out to Yeanim, and few less on the way back) and takes 12 - 18 minutes to complete depending on the wind, your navigational skills, and luck. Luck does seem to play some role, since Myrrh found a way to sail her boat aground and into the outhouse by the Pirates’ Pub in the 4th race... for some reason everyone gave her a wide berth after that incident. On the other hand, when we score the races, you get to throw out your worst race, so a little bad luck does not hurt.

Four different people posted wins (Myrrh, Pacifien, Silkie, and me), but again, Silkie’s consistency won the regatta for her. In terms of standings, probably the closest racing was between Pacifien and Myrrh. Pacifien finished just far enough ahead of Myrrh to move ahead of her in the February standings. Edelwulf improved his standings significantly as well, and Apu Pontoppidan made a fine debut in the VYC racing scene.

Pacifien Massiel wins Saturday March 4th Vagabonds Yacht Club regatta

We tried sailing out of Sanchon on a southeasterly wind, and did four triangle courses and two long around the continent races. Because the wind had been set from the north for our previous events in Sanchon, this changed the feel of the course, particularly for the long course, since the run out to the Osondoson area is now a long upwind leg. This sort of course (long upwind leg, like in the course in Torch) seems to be good for Pacifien, who won a pair of races and was consistently in the front of the pack. I got a pair of wins, but was inconsistent, and struggled in the long races. Myrrh and I both got nailed by a rogue windsetter in the last race. While I know that the Tako 3.1 and the new starting line works to keep the wind set (I helped with the testing, and it works), it appears that this may not continue to work if you have the same boat rezzed for a long time. I know that I was sailing the same boat for 90 minutes saturday, and in the future I’m going to rez a new Tako before each long race.

Pacifien Massiel’s winning streak continues

Pacifien won her second VYC regatta in a row tuesday night, and is currently this month’s top-ranked sailor. We had a good turn out (11 boats) which made for some very exciting starts, and braving all the commotion was ZATZAi made her racing debut with VYC. We ran 4 short triangle course races, and 2 long races down the wester side fo the continent. After the races were over, Pacifien stayed on the water to explain the fine points of her sailing technique while I retired to the pub to calculate results, and then we talked though a number of right of way scenarios using a map of Sanchon/Jinsil and some small boats that Static Sprocket and ZATZAi made. I think this kind of post race post-mortem is going to become a regular feature, since it is a good way to explain the rules without holding up the racing action. This sort of thing (race, then talk about it after the sailing is over for the day) is exactly how I learned sailing in RL, so it felt like home.

What I get for doing race results in a hurry... I left out one whole race from the
results... and that changes everything: Myrrh won by .25 points over Silkie.
I think I have gottten too used to having 6 races, but we actually ran 7 saturday...

events scheduled for the Sanchon Sailing Center:
* monday 7 pm: pirate practice hosted by Static Sproket and Bobby Troughton
* tuesday 7 pm: VYC regatta hosted by Pixeleen Mistral
* wednesday 7 pm: Pirate Naval Battle hosted by Chase Speculaas

Saturday we ran 7 races: 5 of the new short course triangle flavor, and two long races. I was definately having a bad day and finished last in both long course races. Myrrh seemed to be having a good day again, Chase made one of his all too rare apearances and got second, and Apu finished with a very respecable thrid place overall.

Now that we are about half way through march, it is interesting to look at overall rankings. Myrrh has built up a good lead, but after her, things are much closer. I think Silkie would be ahead of me if she had not had a phone call to deal with (which kept her out of a couple races saturday). Pacifien, Silkie and I are all within striking distance of each other. mush, Mel, Static, and Apu are also clustered together, so it is hard to say how things will turn out, but this month, Myrrh is the one to beat.

...i just want to point out that for the past couple of weeks the top four finishers, myself included, have often been separated by only two points between us...these are very close regattas, folks, they could go any way right down to the final race, and are exciting both to watch and to participate in!..

I crashed about a zillion times in the 7 races we ran, but Silkie seemed to be unaffected by whatever was crashing SL for me. Apu got second place, and Static took 3rd...

Saturday, VYC ran our usual 4 PM event and competed (unsucessfully)
with the NCAA baskeball tournament for SL sailors' attention. The small
fleet we had meant that we did get more races run than usual in spite
of the race director's Macintosh crashing repeatedly. SL version 1.9
is trying your race directors patience in a very big way...

We ran 4 short triangle courses inside Sanchon sim, then had a real
adventure in open ocean sailing by setting up a windward-leeward course
in the 12 water sims that connect the northern mainland with the
bulk-auction mainland sims. I stumbled into this patch of water after
property Resistance dragged me to Picasso sim (which is really lovely
in a moorish sort of way... and I bought a great dress there).

In any case, there is a 60 minute auto-return
set on the water in the void sims linking the continents, so you feel
a certain sense of urgency about getting the staring line and bouys
set, and running the races before the course starts disappearing.
Slow paced tours of the region with historical commentary is not
the optimal approach here. By simplying running races without chatter,
we managed 4 long-format races before our bouys and starting line
disappeared.

We also manged to get the first formal (written) protest filed at a VYC
event. This was interesting because it was (as far as I know) only the
second written protest filed in SL sailing history. For this protest
yours truely was NOT one of the principles (thanks your fave god/godess),
and since we were a slightly short on sailors, while wearing my race
director hat, I appointed myself the protest committee in the interest
of getting the issue resolved in a timely fashion. A bit of RL intervened
when one of my two cats died , but we did resolve the issue in under
24 hours.

The protest involved boat A going upwind close hauled on starboard
hitting boat B (also headed upwind close hauled) on port tack.
Boat A collided with the center of boat B (a T-bone collision, for
those who like colorful jargon). The protest commitee determined that
boat A did not hail boat B before the collision, and neither boat
altered course before the collision. In light of this, the protest
committee disqualified BOTH boats for the race.

Starboard tack does have right of way, but is well advised to
hail the other boat far in advance of a collision. Hailing the other boat
helps establish that you gained right of way far enough in advance
of the collision that the other boat can react, and also clearly
alerts the port tack boat that they need to alter course
to avoid collision. Further, the boat on starboard should (if possible)
alter course to avoid collion once it becomes clear that the port tack
boat is not going to alter course. T-bone jobs generally look bad to
protest committees...

In RL sailing you can file (and usually win) protests without colliding with
the other boat if you can establish that you had right of way, and
they could have (but did not) get out of the way. My advice to sailors
is to hail the other boat early, present a chat log along with the
written protest (if it comes to that), and consider taking a snapshot
of the scene, since this would help establish that reasonable
care was taken. Note that while both boats are oblidged to attempt
to avoid collision, it is the opinion of this protest committee that
once the boat with right of way has hailed the other boat, the boat
without right of way has a great burden in avoiding collision.

The ironic part of this incident is that both the boats involved
used this race as one of their throw outs races. Still, this was
a useful exercise in illustrating how the formal protest process
can work, and to establish some precident for how to behave on
the water.

Bottom line: starboard would have won the protest had she
1.) hailed the other boat
2.) made some attempt to avoid collision
Lacking this, the protest committe found it to be in the best
interests of the sport to DQS both boats.

Heh. I'm glad to see ROW make an appearance, as it was one of the appeals of the VYC to me.

Unfortunately, so many people take protests as a personal affront instead of a learning experience. But I've seen that no one is even bothering to learn ROW unless someone who knows the rules takes the initiative to teach the others. I try on occasion, but I fear that I am telling others to be the teachers when I'm neglectful in the role myself.

I've been meaning to reprogram my button HUD with nothing but hails and protest calls, since I'm not using the HUD for anything else at the moment. When ROW starts being enforced, I feel people will remember that the VYC is supposed to be a full ROW venue and hopefully they will try to learn it themselves.

Of course, others will say "Rules? To hell with that, I didn't come here to mess with these stupid rules!" Which is an understandable sentiment, though you wonder if they had never looked at the VYC group description then. ?:/

Incidentally, I have never sailed in RL, nor even stepped foot on a sailboat before. I never knew about ROW until people started mentiong some starboard rule. I have learned ROW in SL as I go, so I don't really see "I don't sail in RL!" as an excuse not to learn it in SL.

In spite of the now well known SL 1.9 crashiness for at least some clients (like mine) we ran 8 races and Myrrh won the regatta by 1 point over Pacifien. Apu posted one of his better finishes with VYC and got 3rd place.

April 1 race results

Saturday, we had another small fleet (to be expected since we were racing at the same time the NCAA backetball tournament final four games were being held). So the fleet consisted of the non-baskeball-obsessed part of the sailing community. I added a medium length course to take advantage of some of the new void sims that the Lindens added recently added in the area near Sanchon and Jinsil. The medium length course is similar to to long course, except that we use the island in Banpo sim as a turning mark before heading back to the finish line. All five races won by either Mel or Silkie, but Mel was enough better that he won the regatta, while Silkie git second place. I got 3rd based on the tie-breaker (I beat Static in the last race we both sailed in). After the races were over, we had some air sailing silliness to mark April Fools day.

Static is moving up in the world. While Silkie won the regatta, Static posted an impressive second place finish. We sailed 6 races: 2 short triangle course races,
2 medium length races, and two long-format races. Pacifien was bemoaning
her dead video card, and mentioned something about a lot of gray textures making her slow. Those interested in donating to the Pacifien video card replacement fund, should contact her directly. For me, the highlight of the regatta was the return of Oliphant Ming to the racing scene after a long absence. Welcome back, Oli!

We did 8 races... I was trying to get enough racing done to feel like we had enough, and at the same time finish early since there is Static had the uber-cool idea of doing a boat show. The boat show runs until an hour before the tuesday night races (boat show ends at 6 pm SL time tuesday, races at start at 7 pm SL time tuesday). We got a late start (sorry) because the Sanchon boat show took longer to finish up than expected. Still, we did get in 6 races, and the event was notable for a couple of reasons. First, skippy made her racing debut after deciding on a whim to buy a tako and practicing with some of the gang at VYC for a week. Second, Oliphant won the regatta without winning an single race... but he was more consistent than anyone else with mostly second and third place finishes. I proved to myself that the instability in SL since 1.9 (at least for Mac users) must have something to do with textures, because I crashed several times while trying to sail until we removed the boat show docs and entries. Then things got a lot better for me.

VYC sponsored the Sanchon boat show for prirate and flying tako sailboats, and donated prize money for 6 best of catagory custom sailboats. In a very pleasant surprise tuesday night, Tony Becket stopped by and donated additional prize money, then Static Sproket topped up the purse, and we ended up paying prize money to not just best in catagory for flying takos, but the second and third p[lace finishers as well. Static Sproket talled the votes, so we'll have to wait for him to get the actual numbers, but here is what I paid out last night. Congratulation to everyone, and I'm sure we will be doing this again soon.

No races yesterday, because I made the mistake of scheduling an event during a grid-wide griefing. It was interesting spending 30 minutes trying to log in and then sit around looking at the map as sims went offline.

We'll try again tuesday.

Tuesday we ran 6 races, but I was one lazy slug and did not score
them that night. Then RL caught up with me for the rest of
the week... and so we have results super late. I'm sorry... you
all can say bad things about me behind my back for a couple days
to punish me.

Sifu posted 3 first place finishes to come out on top, and
while Oliphant started the regatta in fine form, he may have tired
a bit towward the end of the event, since his finishes were not as good.
I was stuck consistently in the middle of the pack, and skippy Spatula
did quite well for having just started racing in SL. This was Theodore
Polonsky's first event and he also did well particilarly since he
declined to sail the long format races. We would all be in trouble if
Pacifien hadn't been late due to RL commitments... when she showed up,
she posted two seconds and a third.

Oliphant won in convincing fashion, but I think the best part of the event was the 6th race where we all tried to turn 4 abreast around the first windward mark, and all got tangled together. I laughed really hard.
