"Priming the pump" here, so to speak - this thread is for posting results from ongoing SYC series races. While the SLSF group forum will be a great resource for our community's ready reference, it doesn't have the same visibility as the Event Discussion forum. For reasons of community outreach, race series results posted here should also be appended to our workhourse Sailboat Races thread, with a pointer back to this SLSF forum included in each report.

Weekly Regatta Results
-MarkTwain White

Our first split fleet weekly regatta exhibited some fine sailing with a number of skippers commenting on how nice it was to have a more managable size fleet to sail against. Lag, normally low in Hollywood anyway, was non-existent on this day according to reports. Some of this was probably due to reduced number of boats on the water, but part of it was most likely due to the fact that LL has moved Hollywood onto a class 4 server, their fastest server.

The overall turn out was 8 boats, our lowest turn out in seven weeks. We don't see that as a trend since a number of our regulars were not going to be around.

A Fleet Final Results
1. Kanker Greenacre 3.75
2. Faykin Odets 7.75
3t Drift Monde 11.00
MarkTwain White 11.00
Nber Medici 11.00

B Fleet Final Results
1. Noland Brokken 3.50
2. PENNIE Sassoon 5.75
3. Cerulia Moxie 8.00

Note that in the second A Fleet race MarkTwain not only got a horrible start, crossing the line early and having to go around, he also fouled Drift Monde on his restart. She did not protest but Mark did a turn anyway because he knew he had fouled. In recent practice sessions we have started to talk about the exercise of the starboards rights rule (which isn't getting protested much right now). The rule has made for much cleaner racing than when we were no row, but when mishaps do occur we should start taking responsibility for our actions. And folks need to become comfortable in calling the protests when they occur. It isn't being anti-social, it's racing.

The A Fleet results left an interestring dilemma. Noland was a clear winner in B Fleet and will be advanced to A Fleet next week. But a three way time for third place in the five boat A Fleet regatta left us with no clear boat to drop to B Fleet. The general consensus was not to drop a boat to B Fleet this next week. Although it was also suggested that the times of the third place boats be compared and the slowest combined time get moved. The combined times looked like this: MarkTwain (23:55), Drift Monde (24:02), and Nber Medici (24:06). We don't plan to move anyone back unless the turn out next week suggests that it is best to do so. In which case Nber Medici will be put into B Fleet.

Weekly Regatta Results
03-01-2006 11:15
HOLLYWOOD Feb. 26, 2006 -- SYC's two acting Commodores, MarkTwain White and Nber Medici did not race this week. MarkTwain was chasing whales and dolphins in RL. Nber was running the regatta until called away on a family matter. SYC's third Commodore, Kanker Greenacre stepped up to the plate to help run the regatta. SYC welcomes new skippers Geoff Gavaskar and Lookfar Callisto. Due to the lower turnout the regatta was not split into A and B fleets.

Congrats to our winner, Kanker Greenacre!

Starboards Yacht Club Regatta Results Sunday March 5
03-06-2006 07:01
SYC held 4 LONG course races (one throw out race) with a single fleet of skippers. In the absence of MarkTwain White, Nber Medici with the able assistance of Myrrh Massiel managed the regatta (A BIG thanks to Myrrh for scoring the races. Nber is going to HAVE to learn how to do this :D ) Ship Wreck Point did its duty on both Kanker and mush. Apu (a new skipper to the Hollywood venue) improved steadily over the day. Final rankings were:

Tied for first: Kanker Greenacre and Myrrh Massiel
(a sword fight was proposed to resolve the tie, but no swords were available)
Third Place: Pennie Sassoon
Fourth Place: mush Caldera
Fifth Place: Apu Pontoppidan
Sixth Place: Al Kaiser
Seventh Place: jemster Hartnell

After the results were announced, Nber Medici wrapped her fingers around her *WAND* and demonstrated the power of the wand. All present were amazed at what they saw. If YOU weren't there, and want to see it.... you have to come to next week's Regatta. If you WERE there, shhhhh... let the others be amazed :D.

Weekly Regatta Results
03-13-2006 13:04
HOLLYWOOD Mar 12, 2006 --The new sailing schedule in Hollywood was a big hit this past Sunday. More than 16 skippers sat in on the novice lesson, eight skippers raced in a special novice race (along with a coach with each boat). A similar number participated in sailboat soccer in the 2PM hour. And at 3PM eight skippers, some of them from the novice class, sailed in a five race short course regatta.

NOVICE CLASS AND RACE

Including novices and coaches more than 15 skippers sat in on the novice slideshow lesson taught by MarkTwain White. The lesson, incorporating imagery of a Tako sailboat and HUD detail, showed in a easy to follow format how sailboats respond to wind and how to control the wind by use of sail and rudder controls. The well received lesson is available for viewing in the Admiral’s Daughter.

Novices then raced in a short course race. Unfortunately we were not clear that only complete novices (not having sailed in prior SLSF events) were supposed to be in the race. Also while we specified that the spinnaker would not be used in the lesson, we did not clarify clearly enough that spinnakers were not to be used in the race. Count these a oversights due to the new format and will be corrected next week. Perhaps the race will be opened to some novices who have dabbled in SLSF races but the winner of the Tako 3.1 will be the top finishing skipper who is racing for the first time.

Novice Race (16 participating)
1: Sifu Luan - +00:05:21
2: Gryphe Padar - +00:05:39
3: Meadow Golding - +00:05:47
4: seonaid McLean - +00:06:46
5: Jemster Hartnell - +00:07:24
6: Selador Cellardoor - +00:07:24
7: Maxie Claveau - +00:08:13
Apu Pontoppidan was the pace boat.

ED. NOTE: Due to the careless actions of the febble old cogger running the novice race (he must have skipped his Geritol that morning) it was not made clear who could be in the race. He also did not clarify that spinnakers should not have been used. Consequently Apu Pontoppidan unknowningly participated in the novice only race. He has graciously surrended all the fame and glory that came his way based on winning the race. The dancing girls have been sent back to SLSF and MarkTwain has gone into exile. This posting has been modified to reflect that Sifu Luan was the legitimate winner. Unless of course Sifu turns out not to be a novice as well. Grin.

ED. NOTE 2: MarkTwain remained in exile for one hour and twenty minutes.

Coaches that rode along: Al Kaiser, Chase Speculass, Kanker Greenacre, MarkTwain White, Myrrh Massiel, Nber Medici, and two others (someone IM MarkTwain with the other coaches’ names please).

ABOVE: A slide from the Novice Class, lesson one. The slide show is available in the Admiral's Daughter.

ABOVE: Novice class on the water.

SAILBOAT SOCCER
Always a crowd pleaser, sailboat soccer kept us all hopping as records were set for the event (using average wind speed of 9m/s). The second race produced a time of 5:25 in getting the earth (soccer) ball pushed around the island. We will keep separate records for soccer based on average wind speed. The record at 7m/s average speed is x:xx.

WEEKLY REGATTA

Myrrh Massiel repeated as the SYC weekly regatta winner this week as we sailed five short course races with a throughout. Nber Medici made a consistent showing to capture second place. Several novice skippers participated and seemed to have learned well the lessons they learned in class. It got a bit messy on the water in regards to starboard rights but no one called a protest. We hope in time that skippers will not only master the starboard rights rule (Rule 10), but begin to exercise starboard rights on the water.

MarkTwain,

I'd like to point out a discrepancy, and an error on my part.

I should not be listed as the winner of the Novice race, for several reasons.

1. I am not a novice (I have raced in other regatta's)
2. I cheated by using my spinnaker (didn't know we weren't supposed to use them)

I had come to Hollywood just before 2:00 and was waiting at the docks until the novice/training session was complete - working on some scripting stuff.

It was just after 2:00 when I noticed a message announcing the start of the race. So I quickly flew out to the start and dropped my Tako - thinking that this was the first race of the regatta - and not the last race of the Novice session.

I should not have even entered that race :(

I am sorry to have thrown things amok, and for 'stealing' the win away from someone who rightly deserves it.

Not to worry Apu. As stated in the report the fault was mine for not clarifying before the start of the race. You acted on the knowlege you had. I should have done a better job of clarifying the conditions of the novice race.

As per your request I will edit the results post and list you as the "pace boat". Sifu Luan will be listed as our winner.

Weekly Regatta Results
03-26-2006 05:43
HOLLYWOOD Mar 19, 2006 – Myrrh Massiel continued her own personal March Madness by winning a third straight weekly regatta. Afterwards MarkTwain set up a press room for Myrrh to announce her retirement. Myrrh was a no show. Twain commented “I guess we are going to have to beat Myrrh on the water instead of with strong are tactics.” ;)

The novice race was won by all “around” nice guy, 314.

Editor’s Notes: First, we apologize for the lateness of this report. With the discovery of the 4 new island/sims around Hollywood this past week, our staff has been extremely busy. Second, some fool apparently didn’t properly save our original report and overwrote the actual race results file. So there is no per position report available this week. A paper backup exists however. :(

Weekly Regatta Results From SYC's New Complex
03-29-2006 20:11
HOLLYWOOD Mar 26, 2006 -- For the second week in a row SYC skippers appeared to skip the NCAA basketball playoffs to turn out in force. Fourteen skippers turned out for the novice race and weekly regatta. Myrrh Massiel's dominance of our weekly regatta series continued as she showed off her ocean sailing skills on the Santa Rosa course in SYC's new Channel Islands sailing complex.

The novice race was won by Jonty Peel. Congrats to all the novices that have been attending our recent classes. They are getting a good foundation for the future.

Between the novice class and the regatta MarkTwain took the fleet on a tour of the new Channel Islands. A fleet of at least a dozen boats participated in the tour and raft-up that included commentary about the new race courses, history of each of the islands, and "featured" MarkTwain singing when the fleet arrived at Santa Catalina. Everyone enjoyed the tour despite Twain's croaking voice singing "twenty six miles across the sea".

The nice thing about having five sailing dedicated sims to play in means we can, as needed, modify the sims for special activites. Raise islands for an obstacle course? No problem. Rezz forts across the sims and do some rum-running against revenue boats past forts waiting with cannon bearing on you? Piece of cake. And its always nice to be able to chat a bit between races rather than feel rushed to beat an auto return feature.

However all isn't goodness and light. We DID experience some hud and sail updating delays on Sunday. LL and most of us that experienced the problem feel that it was an anomoly. We have raced more boats before and after the Sunday regatta without incident. Next Sunday will be an interesting test.

Weekly Regatta Results
04-02-2006 20:09
Hollywood April 2, 2006 – An overwhelming turn out of 12 boats for the regular regatta put a heavy load on the new sims. While lag was an issue with that many boats, the performance was better than last week’s test. Also the issues of SL 1.9 creating difficulties could have been a factor, although we didn’t have very many crashes.

In race 3 MarkTwain became too dependent on a timing hud he was using which did a 10 second burp and cause him to be 8 seconds early instead of 1 second to the good. He had to sail completely around Angel’s Gate and restart.

Congratulations to Suzanne Zeluco who toasted us all with an amazing 3.5O points in a 12 boat regatta.

Congrats also to Ginge Reymont who know only won the novice race but placed a very respectable 8th in the regular regatta.

Courtney "I'm not a lady" Boffin was the queen of the sailboat drag races. Congrats there as well.

Thursday Night at the Races
04-12-2006 11:40
HOLLYWOOD Apr 13, 2006 -- Last Thursday SYC established Thursday Night at the Races. We ended up running three races on the Santa Catalina course. Our winners were:

Race 1: Noland Brokken - +00:04:33
Race 2: 314 Poindexter - +00:03:57
Race 3: William Gide - +00:04:01

The emphasis on Thursday nights will be learning the rules. In addition to the Fundamentals (rules 1-9), SYC has posted rules 10,11,12,13,14,16,18,31,44 and associated videos. Skippers are encouraged to come to SYC and study each rule and watch the video as many times as necessary to master the rule.

Skippers should also grab a copy of sailing gestures which along with useful “messages” to your Tako includes important messages. See thread “Sailing Gestures Update” in this forum.

Weekly Regatta Results
04-13-2006 12:29
HOLLYWOOD April 9, 2006 – Four races were run on the Santa Catalina course taking the skippers through Santa Barbara, Hollywood, and Santa Catalina. Some excellent racing made for an exciting day.

Each skipper could throw out his or her worst finish. At the end of the regatta we had a tie between SUZANNE ZELUCO and MEL FITZCARRALDO. Our congratulations to our co-winners.

Next week: The Grand Tour Course. Early practice races make it clear that this is an exciting course with several strategic and tactical options.

We had 18 skippers in the sim for the novice class. The winner of the novice race was Dirjha Summers!

Sailboat Soccer proved to be challenging in Santa Barbara without end of the world barriers. Next week skippers will need to set up a picket line to keep the ball from going off world.

Thursday Night at the Races Results

NOTICE: COURSE MODIFICATION FOR NEXT SUNDAY. READ BELOW

HOLLYWOOD Apr 13, 2006 -- Our Thursday Night at the Races continued with a rule 18 (Rounding the Mark) incident. I have taken to being not the most generous towards skippers in these races trying to get skippers to HAIL for their rights. Nber and I were side by side going towards first mark. Nber had overlap on me but I did not bear off to give room at the mark, waiting for her to hail for ROOM! She did not do so but fell off the mark and had to do a turn to make it. In RL I could have been called for a foul (rule 18). In SL its a bit fuzzier because we really NEED to assert our rights by HAILING. Had Nber hailed me i would have fallen off. Had Nber protested me i would have acknowleged it and done at 720. But for teaching purposes I waited until the race was over. To her credit she asked about the incident, rather than just assuming she was in the wrong. I then told her that she had rights and that she should have gone with her instinct and asserted them. I bet the next time that happens she will be hollaring ROOOOOMMMM!!!! This is how we learn.

On another occasion Pacifen (or maybe it was Sifu) and i were headed down the course overlapped and I was leeward. She was sailing low (i.e. not as much towards the wind as i wanted) so i hailed "COME UP, I am leeward boat". She did so. It was another good example of using the rules to establish who has the rights over other boats. Makes for more tactically good sailing. There was also a classic starboards right rule violation (Rule 10) at a start where I hailed Sifu who was crossing on port. He/She turned but did not clear me and we grazed at the start. I hailed PROTEST S, and he/she did her 720 turn. The rules worked like a charm.

One note about Rule 14 which states that even a boat who has rights has the burden of avoiding a collision if possible. The key phrase is "if possible". This rule is intended to preserve property from damage and injury to skippers. Neither of which applies in SL. However it is good practice to avoid collision "if possible" and protest based on having to change course to avoid the collision. In SYC we will not be hard nosed about Rule 14. It is there and should be followed if for no other reason that hitting a boat will slow you down tremedoulsly, but a counter protest of rule 14 by a boat that has fouled to create the contact will not be weighed heavily unless it is clear that the skipper in quesition was pretty deliberate in purposely avoiding a collision.

What is great about our Thursday night sailing is that there have been a half dozen protests or potential protests in the two weeks we have been using this format. And NO ONE has gotten pissed at anyone over it. The atmosphere has been "lets learn from this". So come on out on Thursday and get compfortable with the rules (they are all in easy to follow videos in SYC). Get the sailing gestures and implement them. And get comfortable sailing with the rules and the hailing gestures. It's a blast.

Pacifien won 3 of our races on Thursday, MarkTwain won the other. Sailing were: Pacifien, Nber, MarkTwain, Sifu, Al, and Myrrh tagged along unofficially. I think there were a couple of others as well but names escape me.

NOTICE: TWO CHANGES IN GRAND TOUR COURSE!
The Grand Tour course is working out beautifully. However to increase tactical possiblilites after the races I MOVED Mark #3 (black) in Santa Cruz 15 meters to the east. I also moved Mark #7 (white) in Santa Catalina 20 meters to the east. Be sure you review these turns before sunday's races, they may affect your strategies.

I just wanted to say that I truly did have a pleasant experience sailing this past Thursday with the SYC. I don't normally get to sail with them, as Sundays are not a good time for me.

What I particularly enjoyed was the emphasis on ROW. I've been trying to learn my ROW for awhile, but I'm the sort of person who needs to learn by doing and seeing the situation firsthand. Mark was upfront that he was going to be a bit of a hard ass on protests and hails, but that it was demonstrate how it works to those who aren't familiar with it. In time, I imagine others will grow accustomed to hailing to assert their ROW. Assuming they aren't like me and keep procrastinating on setting up the gestures. :P

(Premade gestures available at the Admiral's Daughter.)

My final race was one I enjoyed the most. I know how to trim my sails and adjust my spinnaker relatively well at this point, that's not much of a challenge. But sailing against Mark most of the way, I found I had to pay attention on whether I had starboard tack or was the leeward boat. It made the race more than who could go faster, but a test of strategy. It became a chess match. That I totally won 'cause I was on the leeward until the final tack! Mwuahahahaha!

But honestly, the race on Thursday was, I think, user friendly to those starting with no knowledge of ROW and a willingness to learn it. Probably the only thing that is required is knowledge of various sailing terms, like what it means to be leeward and such. Even then, if you go "wait, what's leeward," someone will probably be kind enough to explain.

Weekly Regatta Report
04-16-2006 21:21
HOLLYWOOD Apr 16, 2006 (EASTER) -- Sifu ran four strong races finishing 1st, 2nd, 1st, and 1st (the 2nd place was his/her throw out) to dominate the field on Easter Sunday. Static Sprocket and Noland Brokken fought hard for second spot, with Static just barely edging out Noland.

The novice turn out was light on this Easter Sunday. But Kitty Sprocket and Flint Stantz showed signs of being fast learners.

The sailboat soccer game established 7 min 12 seconds as the time to beat on the run to Santa Barbara and back.

Well what can I say? MarkTwain is absolutely right. I SHOULD have hailed....but I hesitated thinking that I might be wrong and would look foolish. Well, I have learned from this. :)) This IS how we learn. Thanks Mark!

Weekly Regatta and Disaster Report
04-24-2006 18:43
HOLLYWOOD Apr 23, 2006 -- Suzanne Zeluco returned to the winners circle with wins in all four Grand Tour Course races at the weekly regatta in Hollywood and the Channel Island sims. An interesting scoring "anomoly" occured as MarkTwain White finished the regatta with four 3rd place finishes.

What make that odd was that all those 3rds netted him 4th place over all. As in RL racing SYC allows you to throw out one race out of four. Mark's through out was a 3rd place finish. Noland and Static each got to throw out 4th place finishes which put them in a tie for second place, one point ahead of Mark. "Second Life is so unfair" said Mark after the regatta.

Polkerface Mahoney won our novice race and stayed for the regular regatta where he tied for 6th place. Susan Dangle was another first time SYC racer and finished an impressive 5th place over all and improved her place in nearly each of the four races. We expect to see good things from Polkerface and Susan in future regattas.

Sailboat Soccer was fun as always and netted a new record on the Santa Barbara run of 6:24.

Thanks to Nber Medici for running the regatta on Sunday. This comment despite the fact that she continued to be a nemesis to all with her magic wand after the regatta. Details below.

HOLLYWOOD May 7, 2006 -- Save for crashing in the first race, Suzanne Zeluco would likely have taken another weekly regatta trophy today. As it turns out after a long dry spell MarkTwain White came out on the top of the heap. And Nber Medici, who continues improve and sail consistantly, took second.

Hollywood and the Channel Island sims are being modified to incorporate a nine hole golf course. The added islands increased strategic and tactical options. Some of the changes took place the day of the race and a large sign was posted indicating the changes. Neither MarkTwain nor Nber ran the course before the regatta although some got to make a loop.

Unfortunately Noland had trouble getting into SL and so actually rezzed his boat during the final seconds of the countdown and was unaware of the posted changes. Poor Noland roared up the west side of Santa Cruz as in the past only to find the rest of the fleet bearing down on him from the east side. Noland would surely have placed higher had he not been caught by this unfortunate string of events.

Everyone should come to Hollywood and practice before next Sunday as we have set up the most exiciting course yet, the new Trade Winds Course.

Note: There was no regatta on April 30 as SL was down.

You've Been Part of a Successful Test
05-17-2006 05:26
For those of you that are interested in the background behind the Channel Island sims I think its time to give a little history of that.

In January Cyn Linden led a townhall meeting regarding the then upcoming sim reservation system. At the conclusion of that meeting I had a chat with her about my desire to expand Hollywood to additional sims for sailboat racing. My idea was that since sims shared "boxes" (i.e. multiple cpu's per box on their best servers) perhaps they could split the resources of a cpu to more than one region.

My initial desire was to put two regions on a cpu. Cyn checked that out and got back to me with a positive response. Nber and I pooled our resources and sent the big bucks for the 2:1 sim. Unfortunately a week later Cyn got back to me and said the 2:1 wouldn't fly. This after it had been given the go ahead. To this day I have not received an adequate explanation why it was given a go ahead then nicked, but thats the situation.

Cyn said, however, that a 4:1 was a doable idea. This bothered me because of my concern for sim performance with a large fleet of Tako's hammering the processor of a reduced processor sim. The history of how that has gone is apparent to us all. The bottom line here is that we have had to deal with burps in the 4:1 that have occured in the past few months, but that overall they have done well supporting sailing. And of course it was nice to have 4 sims to lay out for racing rather than 2.

So for the past several months folks, you have been part of a test product that grew out of a discussion between myself and Cyn Linden. Now that product is available to all of SL under the name of Openspaces.

Here are the details: /3/d7/107177/1.html

Weekly Regatta Results - May 28th
05-29-2006 06:11
Starboards Yacht Club held its weekly Novice Sailor Lesson at 2 pm and weekly Regatta at 3 pm on Sunday. The Novice class was well attended with 6 participants. Thanks to coaches who helped with one-on-one instruction after the class presentation (I would list your names but am positive I would miss someone). Many of the coaches got sent to detention for their comments during my presentation - just teasing of course.

The weekly Regatta consisted of four races on the Trade Winds course. One race was a throw-out. Two new sailors Sabbie DeGroot and Riffey4 DeGroot raced for the first time and did well. Static entertained the fleet with his on-the-water rendition of 99 bottles of beer on the wall. Singing and sailing seem to mix for him. The fleet welcomed PENNIE Sassoon back to the water - she has promised to be around more. With 12 boats racing, starts were, to say the least, challenging. Myrrh would have done much better had she been able to stay in SL. Thanks to Faykin Odets for helping Race Director Nber Medici with the scoring.

Regatta standings are below:

1 Suzanne Zeluco 3.5
2 Faykin Odets 4.5
3 Static Sprocket 8
4 Jamey Sismondi 10
5 Susan Dangle 12
6 Drift Monde 16
7 Al Kaiser 22
8 Sabbie DeGroot 23
9 Kumiko Takashi 23
10 Riffey4 DeGroot 24
11 Myrrh Massiel 27
12 PENNIE Sassoon 29
