"Priming the pump" here, so to speak - this thread is for announcing upcoming events of specific interest to the SLSF community. While the this forum will be a great resource for our community's ready reference, it doesn't have the same visibility as the general Discussion Forums. For reasons of community outreach, events announced here should also be posted to the Special Attractions forum and appended to our workhourse Sailboat Races thread, with a pointer back to this SLSF forum included in each announcement.

Events should also be listed on the in-world Events Calendar.

Stop by the race instructions and course landmark dispenser at Sanchon (227, 92) to get the course. The long course will run down the western side of the continent, using the same course as we did on tuesday. We'll see if Pacifien can win three regattas in a row. :-)

New Sailing Schedule in Hollywood
03-11-2006 09:04
In order to increase sailing opportunties to the many folks who have expressed interest in sailing but have not become involved, we are restructuring the events schedule. Here is the new schedule for Sunday sailing events in Hollywood:

1PM -- NOVICE SAILING LESSONS
This will begin each week with an classroom slide show lesson designed to get novices in the water and sailing. Although the basics will be covered in each lesson, the second half of the lesson will introduce a new topic each week.

Those who don't need the classroom lesson are encouraged to come and practice. If you are an experienced skipper you are asked to attend and offer your services as a ride along coach. We will provide instructions for both coaches and those that would like a coach to help them master the techniques of sailing the Tako sailboat. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS as coachs. Coaches need not be expert sailors. Any skipper who knows how to tack and trim sails with confidence can fulfill this role.

A NOVICE RACE WILL BE HELD AT THE END OF CLASS. ALL NOVICES THAT RACE WILL BE GIVEN $50L. THE WINNER OF THE NOVICE RACE WILL BE GIVEN A TAKO 3.1 AS A PRIZE! :D

2PM -- We will return to our popular FUN SAILING events at 2pm. SAILBOAT DRAG RACING, and SAILBOAT SOCCER are designed to be fun activites that teach you sailing skills. Also, one on one lessons can occur at this time.

3PM -- Our weekly regatta will be help in this time slot. If we have more than nine boats sailing we will divide the fleet into "A" and "B" fleets (based on turn out) and two trophies will be awarded.

Weekly Regatta

Sigh.... JUST as I was beginning to think that I have figured out a little of the spinnaker...I am forced to take a hiatus from sailing. I will not be able to sail today, but I am thinking of all of you out on the water, while I am in cold windy Chicago. Have fun....sail well....let the wind fill your sails. :)

3 day boat show: Saturday April 8 - Tuesday April 11
04-02-2006 16:31
The Sanchon Custom Sailboat Contest and Show

Since the early days of the Flying Tako, owners have been customizing the look of their boats, and with the newest versions of the Flying Tako there are even more possibilities. At the same time, the pirate sailors have been developing sailing warships that are also customized and use the same wind-driven physics as the flying tako. Now, for the first time, Vagabonds Yacht Club is sponsoring a 3-day boat show so that everyone can appreciate the creativity of the yacht racing customizers and the pirate warship builders, and the SL community can vote on who has the best flying tako and pirate ship.

Where: Sanchon sim

When: Saturday April 8 @ 6 pm SL time boat show contestants can rez their boats
(after the conclusion of the 4 pm Saturday VYC races in Sanchon).
Contestant boats should remain rezed at the Sanchon boat show docks until
6 pm Tuesday April 11 when we will tally votes received and declare winners.
We will then return the boats to their owners and run the usual VYC tuesday night sailboat races at 7 pm.

Categories:
* Best Flying Tako Sail Customization (L$500 prize)
* Best Flying Tako Hull Customization (L$500 prize)
* Best Flying Tako Overall (L$1000 prize)
* Best Pirate Ship Sail (L$500 prize)
* Best Pirate Ship Hull (L$500 prize)
* Most Deadly Pirate Ship Overall (L$1000 prize)

Note that all pirate ships entered in this contest must be able to sail under wind power and take part in the pirate battles held wednesday nights at 7 pm in Sanchon.
