From: Oryx Tempel From Wikipedia: "Nekos" (urban slang for "nekomimi" or "nekomusume" ARE catgirls: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catgirl"A catgirl is a female with cat ears, a cat tail, or other feline characteristics on an otherwise human-shaped body. Catgirls are found occasionally in anime and manga either as a form of cosplay or actual body parts, as well as in a few video games. Catgirls may wear over-sized mittens and shoes that look like paws. In Japanese, catgirls are usually called nekomimi — literally, "cat ears" — rather than the literal term nekomusume. Sometimes characters do not actually feature cat-like ears or such an accessory but their hair sticks out and resembles cat ears. Such characters do not fit the definition of catgirls. Other animal combinations, usually mammals like bunnygirls, foxgirls and (more rarely) doggirls; are referred to as kemonomimi. Eastern catgirls are usually depicted as having minimal feline characteristics, such as eyes with vertical pupils, tails, and ears (with different color ear-fur than their hair). Western catgirls are more often portrayed as more animal-like in appearance, with full body fur and claws being their most prominent aspects, though not true for all cases." is very glad i read thru this i was gonna post the same thing! Nekos or Nekomimi translates as cat...whether you just wear the ears and tail or go the whole yard, you will fall under that heading. it a diverse look that goes well with anything, now smoke this pipe and sheath the claws

OK I've been seeing a trend among male avvies who can buy themselves hair. They almost always have black hair. What's going on?

When i Entered SL, I dressed primarily in a Gypsy style i had enjoyed in another game platform, it was me. Later i started swinging more towads the Asian Fashions (and when on a Gorean Sim, i dressed for the environment, But changed out again when i wasn't there.
The one constant has been my colour selection. I am almost always found in variations of Black, Red, and White.
I have a recognizable personal style, and tend Not to follow Fashions, or fads.

From: Trout Recreant As a very general rule, women like to shop for clothes more than men and have much larger wardrobes. This is true in SL as well as RL to some extent. This means that clothing designers focus on their primary market - women to the detriment of men. The result is that men, who would rather be doing other things, actually have to work harder to find things they like, or they just give up and get whatever garbage is available. I guess women have the opposite problem. There's too much stuff for them to wade through to pick out the really good stuff. A very true factor. Now is it market forces or chicken & egg? Are we doomed to have to hunt every nook and cranny for decent menswear? I think your point in giving up is right. By fluke I found my elvish tee checking out someone's recommendation for something else. Now between that and my tuxedo (free of course!) Bilbo barely changes into other outfits. Hawaiian shorts the other day to play with the cartels surfboards the other day but that is it. Now my female .. Jeez!! Should it be the pink or the blue? prim or flex skirt? shoes .. ermmm! Oooh yes! the heart earrings! She might spend the entire hour changing clothes and never actually go anywhere! Trying an opposite gender alt can be a real education!! Would Bilbo spend the whole hour umming and arring if he had a wide ranging wardrobe or would he just resort to the slob he is RL? Hmmm .. better ask Brenda! add: oh and Bilbo; brown hair for the last 54 weeks except for about 5 minutes with black and a week with red

It's easier as a guy to be a cool looking furry or bot than a human.

From: Annabelle Babii My look is fairly low-prim. i have a few looks that are specifically lo-prim, close to no-prim. created with the thought in mind that every single prim you wear mutiplies the trouble you have when crossing a sim border on a moving vehicle. Biggest number of prims in those outfits: 26 (proton ponytail from nuclear boutique), no other prims on my body, unless you count the 217 prims in my yacht which is worn as an attachment to avoide the 31 prim vehicle limit.

The macho man look has to be the least attractive in SL, hehe. If a man is all muscles, tattoos and bling, I run.
I like to see avatars that are DIFFERENT. Not just a 'bought in one piece complete look' perhaps, but something that the owner has built up from different sources.
A prime example would be Gala Phoenix - whenever I see her I am impressed with her looks. Her attention to detail is amazing, it must take her ages to put her outfits togethers, but boy, do they work.
That, to me, seems to be one of the big differences between 'newbies' and 'oldies'. Newbies will often have a skin/body combo from one source (so looking like quite a few other people), and a 'matching' outfit from one source.
Oldies may well have a more 'mix and match' approach. Top from one supplier, pants from another, jewelry from yet another etc. Odd items of their own creation and gifts from friends, items they have had since 'day one' and the latest in cool gadgets - all mixed together to give them a unique look.
I have noticed how people have moved away from the 'complete avatar' look of late. I have been doing something of an 'avatar fashions in SL' project, hehe.
Having said all that - I have no sense of style and have been cheating lately - I have been wandering around as a cute little white tiger cub, hehe.

I think you have a truth to dat. A lot of the folks I know who've been here for some time have picked up items over time to build their look. This is definitely true for myself. here are the "must haves" for my avvie. 1. Custom Shape: started as a freebie "Baby Girl AV" I gained in March 06, an have tweaked over time, most recently in April 07 or so. 2. Skin and eyes - Robin Sojourner. I was the "beta tester" for the former, an still use the "final test" version. 3. Hair - Tami McCoy. It's almost always the "Double Trouble" for kids, which she made for me, though I do have a coupel others of hers I'll wear for specific occassions. 4. Glasses - Mad Designs. Bought on my first day out of Orientation Island, slightly resized, still worn all this time later. 5. "Mari" ID bracelet - D'Nel. A gift from my Aunty Temptie for bein her flowergirl. 6. Friendship bracelet. Made by me in a class. Recently replaced by my Camp HardKnock memento lanyard bracelet. 7. Gold Heart earrings and Gold Heart Locket - Karsten Rutledge. Both were custom work for me, with the locket also including photos I took o my mommy an daddy. Clothing/shoes/etc. come from various sources. Mari

From: Trout Recreant Virtual Creations' "Ozzy". The single greatest men's hair in SL. I stand by that statement and will engage in fisticuffs with anyone who disagrees. Here Comes Trouble's Rocker is the other one I really like, but nothing beats good old Ozzy. Ozzy does indeed rock Trout - went out and picked one up yesterday evening! Still playing with the color change script - love it!!

Maybe it's mostly brunette men irl, and the usual shade of "dark brown" isn't dark enough.
I recently went dark to get closer to my rl looks, and put a shade of dark gray over the dark brown shade, and it's almost perfect now. Not black, but not as light or red as "dark brown."

I went with black hair because my RL hair is jet black, well except for the parts starting to turn gray/white.

I'm blonde too Sally and very pale as well. no tans for me. I tend to see more dark haired women around - maybe they think it's "sexier"? Who knows? I went blonde, because in RL, I am. I patterned my av a lot on my RL appearance, albeit highly glorifed of course lol (although my alt is a redhead, because once in RL I went red on a lark). And of course, I had to prove not all blondes are dumb

Most of the people in the REAL World have brown or black hair.

The second dayI was in SL - back in 2004, I made myself a red hair texture. These were the days before prim hair, of course. So my 'Ruth' long hair was the same as most girls. However, no one else had hair quite the same color and texture as mine (proud moment). It became kinda my 'trademark' and I wore it for nearly a year.
I now sport prim hair (well, times change and even I have to at least try and keep up with fashion, hehe) - but 95% of the time, it is red!
I only wear other colors for 'special looks' (like with my gorgeous black skin) or when red really clashes with a lovely outfit I just HAVE to wear.
Boring though it may be, Fu is a redhead - always has been, always will be, hehe

My male alt tends towards darker hair mostly because there are fewer streaking and alpha layering issues to worry about.
I'll second the trip to Renegade and FORM, and also mention Indigo as a nice little place for casual guy stuff.
I also check the Second Man blog once in a while for pointers.

Hair: black; r/l I'm brown but I've never been happy with any of the attempts I've made with brown in game; its always too muddy or red and cartoony-looking. I'm sure its just a question of finding the right texture however, but black is just easier because it hides sloppy texturing.
color-changing hair. COOL!! One thing I've always had a thought about was creating a nice, subtle particle effect to put into hair to give it a "sun kissed" or "moon kissed" effect (tosses out a million L$ idea, play with it if you like; I'll never get around to it). It's more of a femme thing and out of my line of craftwork, and my one attempt at creating prim hair convinced me that the professional designers deserved all the L$ they get.
Looks: I'm kinda lazy, and have had the same look for a year or so now with a couple variations - ETD hair in a straight ponytail and a subtle male skin, but otherwise freebie gear or homebrew. I'm not a fashion plate but no one's ever pulled me over and suggested a makeover, so I guess I'm within minimal acceptable bounds. Hair's a bit primmy at 69, but everything else is easy on the server resources.
I did build a facelamp for myself after reading about them - does a great job of lighting up the face with normally-directed light (its an alpha sphere in front of the head at just above eye level).

I see very few actual oldbies answering this thread so I will will offer my 2 cents. I can't speak for others but I don't wear bling, an AO and rarely flex clothes. If you want to know, I prefer the basic SL look, and really don't think that trashing myself up improves my appearance. You may even see other old timers wearing texture hair.
Most of us have outgrown the need to keep up with every new trend and that is simply because we don't care.
