There are certain 'looks' that I've been seeing among older avatars who are able to purchase things and change the way they look. What trends have you been seeing?

1. Neko girl- I've been seeing several recently crawling around with their cat ears, tails, and whiskers.. All have nice hair, skins, skimpy dresses. Definitely looks like they've been doing a lot of shopping.

2. Tough guy - I see them so often I wonder if there's some kind of tough guy group where they all exchange ideas on clothing. They mostly have no shirt. Good skin. Tattoos. Good prim shoes and spikes and chains. Long hair. They are usually standing around with their arms folded or slouching.

3. Ballroom girl- I come across girls in full ballroom gowns in the strangest of places. You see one at the beach or shopping for animations. Usually they have lots of prim jewelry on.

girl next door (usually me)

jeans or shorts, sneakers, and a tshirt of some sort, sometimes a short waisted one, other times tucked in

hair down, nice skin, little jewelry and little to no bling

I like the girl next door look (not the one that is available on char creation LOL)

Trying to look sexy for an SL female is as easy as walking into any store.

Trying to look sexy as a male avatar is so damn-near impossible, most resort to the "macho" look as a poor substitute for having the brains to converse and woo with conduct.

Unfortunate, but true.

I have a lot of guys ask me where to go for male clothes shoes etc
well I am female so basically dunno

have been thinking about making a male alt just to try it out, and see how well I can make a male look without paying a L

I know for females it is easy to look good without costing anything

Don't even waste your time. When it comes to Avatars, SL is clearly a girl game.

I think people like the Neko look because it's versatile. Like you have gothy nekos, skimpy nekos, punky nekos, normal nekos, and such and they all mingle as one neko group.

It's really hard to make a male alt look decent and not like a blingtard. My alt tends to go for the mafia/rat pack/1920's gangster look. Double breasted suits, hats, nice shoes... send him out into the world with a good AO and he's pretty fly.

maybe tomorrow I will make a male alt

will not cost me anything and I aim to not purchase anything in world, want to try to do it all on freebies, to see if it can be done

yes it is a girls world

a lot of guys ask me to make mens clothes, problem is, I dunno what men want

so maybe by being a virtual male I might get some kind of insight.

Look deep into your sex drive... :p

Seriously, tho, on-topic; I've noticed that a lot of "oldies" are more diverse with their avatars. I see more non-human oldies than human ones. I wonder if SL was more accepting of diversity back then or if we (relative newbies) are just not very creative?

The male freebies are pure junk. Awful. I won't go so far to say that there isn't stuff out there for guys, but if you don't want to look like a blingy gangsta, skateboard dude, hipster doofus, or the above mentioned tough guy, it is tough. I figured the only way to have a unique look was to dress like I normally do. I've managed to buy a few things I like, but shoes seem especially difficult to find especially if you don't want to have shoes fit for an 8 foot tall Viking.

my male alt uses a freebie skin (same freebie skin every other male uses) and a freebie suit made, oddly enough, by a kimono/sushi maker. they are both pretty good quality freebies too.
the 'real me' has a strong inclination toward the gothic lolita style.

This one wants something that makes him look "fly" :)

I was pretty mono-clothed until the resident-who-was-to-become-my-partner took me to DE Designs. Still my favorite clothing store.

Shoes that don't look cartoonish (have some Shiny Things I like)

A pair of knee height black boots that are covered with chrome spikes.

Got tons of jeans, but can always use a nice looking pair.

Some nice slacks.

Oxford shirts

My main AV fits your tough guy type (except he nearly always wears a shirt) but also wears ears, tail and whiskers. Now, if I could just get a ball gown to fit....

I've tried making a nice looking male shape. The trick is to not look at the slider values too much and focus on how the shape looks. If you think that setting all the sliders to 50 gets you an average looking male and that setting them higher gets you muscular and lower gets you skinny... you are wrong... Just look at the body... fix anything that looks odd no matter what the sliders tell you.

Ahh you've sidetracked me on my own thread!

4. Punk girl. Usually has black hair. Wearing some kind of tshirt and jeans combo. Massive complicated looking shoes... lots of prims accessories. Petite. Usually has a very nice overall look though.

5. Gangsta man. Has some kind of super slouchy AO. Prim bandana or cap. Massive amounts of chains and bling. Maybe has one pant leg rolled up and wearing high top sneakers. For some reason prim accessories seem overly large.

Thank you!! Why ARE the sneakers and pant leg rolled up prims so large? Most of the time I wonder if they are just no mod so the poor guy cant edit them and he ends up looking like a 9 year old shopping through his older brothers closet. *shrugs*

I recently helped a male RL friend get all suited up, and I do agree, good freebie men's clothes are harder to find, but not impossible. Popping down to the NCI center, there were a number of freebies, including a nice starter skin by Opium. Gurl 6 had some nice enough hair (though he splurged and got some 200L hair for himself).

Layering is a nice look--he tossed on a leather jacket over a stock button down shirt and added a hat (which I admit, I adjusted for him). Pants and basic boots later, and he didn't look half bad, I think. I then got him an AO as a present, and tossed in a few Napoleonic Uniforms for when we run about in historical sims (me, I wear Victorian outfits all the time, but he seemed self conscious about it in the modern sims. /shrug. Fellows can be so fragile sometimes)

Oh, for other looks, has anyone mentioned the 1890s bicycling dress look? No? Hmmm...must be slow to catch on.

My avatar has taken 9-months to shape, skin, and clothe to my liking. My SL wife is pleased.

I wear a modifiable shape I very seriously tweaked myself, and what I feel is one of the best male skins available. Yes, my hair is medium-long but only because all the male short-hair I've found sux.

My clothes are a result of 9-months of very labor-intense and picky shopping and I still haven't found any male shoes worth a tinker's damn that weren't so spike-laden they looked like kiddie-shit.

Female pants all show an ass-crack, which though immodest, is something girls seem to like wearing.

Ass-cracks on males will cause females to puke. So will speedos, and thongs.

Women seem to want their men dressed, and God-only-knows in *what.*

Perhaps the lack of decent male clothing contributes to there being such a disgusting number of males-as-females in this game.

yeah when I do shapes for myself (female) I never value it on the slider #'s
I always watch the shape changes and decide if I like it or not

I'd have to say that gay men own the male avatar look. Look for rainbow flags if you want to see it done well.

And the memo that we all get, but seems not to make it into the straight male community, is "don't min and max all the damn sliders." The tiny waist and 0% body fat on a guy offends the female (and gay male) eye worse than any of the bling or gangster clothes you can come up with.
