Can I add a big thumbs down here for male avitars blown up to the size of steroid laden gorillas with little tiny heads?

Amen! Heh heh - I too have noticed the tendency of some noobs to immediately make their avie broad shouldered, max out muscles and height, but then forget to adjust the head to match. Proportions are important! LOL :)

As for my avie - I went for as much "GRRRRR!" tough guy look as I could. I think the only way to manage any more GRRRR! would be for my avie to continually wrestle rabid grizzly bears!

Funny thing is I'm not that way when you talk to me. :) I'm fairly laid back and tend to be friendly. That is, unless you are a rabid grizzly bear - then it is time to wrestle! GRRRRRR!

Sorry if I offend anyone, but I'M TIRED OF THE DEFAULT CATGIRL.

they're not 'neko'. 'neko' is japanese for 'cat'. They're not cats. They're cat-girls.

And they're not even catgirls, they're just girls who think that because they have a few 'purr' gestures they're exotic and feline. NAY, I SAY TO YOU. NAY. You're not a 'bad kitty', you're not a 'sexy kitten'. YOU'RE A GIRL WEARING EARS AND A TAIL.

Even worse, when girls wear their hair up and their human ears are showing? Makes me want to DECIMATE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE.

I feel like I should have a rant post all my own, and this is entirely inappropriate for this topic.

I sometimes just wear ears and tail, but a lot of the time I use a kitty a/o that makes me walk around on all fours, and sometimes wear kitty skin - stripes, spots, etc. and whiskers. Other times I'm just a human with ears.

Cool?

I think if I saw you in-game I wouldn't have a very good opinion of you, to be honest.

I should agree with you, and would suggest further that it's inappropriate for this or any other SL forum.

Racist. Speciesist. I bet you drown kittens in pillowcases.

Anyway, the Neko character type isn't an SL invention. It's a staple of Japanese anime. And in fact, the character IS a "girl with ears and a tail and some catlike behaviors". So the SL Nekos are doing it right (except that the anime versions are often werecreatures, and I haven't seen an SL Neko do that...yet).

And I think they're cute, and their antics liven up the SL landscape. So there. :p

If you mean turn into an actual cat - I've come as close as I can. I have actually looked for a better full kitty look and haven't found it yet.

If the 'default catgirl' is having fun doing her thing, why should it matter to you? I thought that was the point of SL. No one is suggesting you convert.

Besides, we're not all the same and you'd know that if you were paying attention...'default' is inaccurate.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Yes, I was replying to your rant by noting that I do not always wander around in just kitty ears and tail. You replied that you, in your opinion, wouldn't think highly of me. And I replied that I didn't know why I should care about your opinion. I am still waiting. Is there some reason that I should specifically care about your opinion? Very good. I have now locked your name into my mind and will attempt to not go anywhere near you so that I don't accidently cause your head to explode. "AAAAH - cat-girl!"

From Wikipedia: "Nekos" (urban slang for "nekomimi" or "nekomusume";) ARE catgirls:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catgirl

"A catgirl is a female with cat ears, a cat tail, or other feline characteristics on an otherwise human-shaped body. Catgirls are found occasionally in anime and manga either as a form of cosplay or actual body parts, as well as in a few video games. Catgirls may wear over-sized mittens and shoes that look like paws. In Japanese, catgirls are usually called nekomimi — literally, "cat ears" — rather than the literal term nekomusume. Sometimes characters do not actually feature cat-like ears or such an accessory but their hair sticks out and resembles cat ears. Such characters do not fit the definition of catgirls. Other animal combinations, usually mammals like bunnygirls, foxgirls and (more rarely) doggirls; are referred to as kemonomimi.

Eastern catgirls are usually depicted as having minimal feline characteristics, such as eyes with vertical pupils, tails, and ears (with different color ear-fur than their hair). Western catgirls are more often portrayed as more animal-like in appearance, with full body fur and claws being their most prominent aspects, though not true for all cases."

That would be fun :) Especially the part where I am not the only kitty-eared/tailed person around.

Skipping back to some earlier themes in this thread:

I'm 48 but have tattoos in SL--a variety of them! I get complimented on a regular basis, because I've chosen well, I believe--and I paid through the nose for the good designs. I also have a nose-ring (which reflects RL, actually), self-made. Both these items reflect the time I've spent in SL (since November 2006): exhaustive shopping skills and the ability to make attachments.

Male skins: One of the biggest challenges I found in looking at male skins is getting good body hair. The facial hair situation is bad enough--lots of emo looks and "this tiny little soul patch is all the facial hair I can grow yet" looks--but finding a male skin with body hair really cuts down the possibilities. They are out there, though, along with good ranges of facial hair from some designers. The challenge of building middle-aged or older avies is a big one--not only are there few skins, I don't think the avatar mesh is designed well for creating non-buff shapes. Major skill set: comparison shopping, not for the newbie or faint-at-heart.

Hair: my female alt has a 1-prim bun for those high-lag special events, but my regular prim hair has been personalized to create a nice redhead from blonde hair. And what I said about shapes? It goes just as much for female shapes--if you don't make a Barbie doll shape, then just forget about a lot of the clothes out there.

Homophobia: All the insecure guys who are worried about the female avies being controlled by male typists or the people with androgynous names who switch genders--get a grip! You can't know *anything* for sure about the people you meet in SL unless you confirm it outside of SL. If you're that worried, you should be careful to keep sex strictly out of your SL. And let's not forget the non-human avies that don't have gender dimorphism--their typists form relationships, too! Most of the older avatars I've met (SL time older) seem to be less hung up on the whole gender thing.

I don't see anyone's concern over that as some aspect of "homophobia." Most actors and other celebrities who come out as gay in today's society are gladly embraced, or perhaps simply ignored, by the public. We are, for the most part, very accepting of these types of things, so long as the person in question isn't an obnoxiously strident activist (regardless of the purpose of one's activism, political or sexual or any other category).

Where you see rampant speculation and late-night-talk-show-host-ridicule is in those cases where someone is suspected of, or has admitted to, hiding their preferences or proclivities.

We're very tolerant of others' likes and dislikes, but for the most part everyone hates LYING.

Where's the line between lying and no-one's business, though?
