Initially, I misinterpreted your "what are older alts wearing" comment, Bree, to mean how do older RL people dress differently than younger people? I am very self conscious about the fact I can't bring myself to wear those clunky big boots that all the hip young girls wear OR to cover my arms with colorful tattoos. And I know it's on account of my RL age (42). I am convinced my lack of tattoos and preference for delicate footwear shouts "she's old enough to be your mother!" in the kind of hip clubs I like to hang out in. SL, for me, is a chance to live out my Friends/Jennifer Anniston era fantasies of great clothes and a hot body! Oddly enough, thoughd, when I created my male alt, all I wanted to do was run around with my sword - couln't care less for fashion or "looks," just want to roam and DO stuff! (and I don't mean sex! I think my male av is kinda the Matthew Fox character in Back to the Future.)

LOL Abby!
Similarly my female alt isn't for sex but I'm a lot happier from reading your comment about her being a shopaholic ;)
It's always been of immense interest to me how people's behaviour changes with a change of avie gender. The moment I created her I became very self conscious .. nothing like the RL scruffy me at all LOL

Don't feel bad. I'm 37 and I want no part of Tatoos and Frankenstein shoes either. I pretty much wear in SL the same things I like to wear in RL, save for a few costumes and special occasion items. I don't worry much about what I am wearing in a club or other venue. I see all sorts of attire in all sorts of places.

From what I heard, Bilbo doesn't have enough character to bother assasinating.....

Among the older content creators, low-prim is hot. Go to any event or Linden office meeting that deals with content creators, and you can have a whole hoarde of dozens of them with almost no render lag :)

*nod* I know whenever I go to a crowded class or other thang I tend to dress down - basic sweaters and pants - but I always have a hard time giving up my ETD Polite II hair.

Hummm. For those in my household who can afford to wear whatever they please, here are some of their most common "looks".

Ceera Murakami (myself): Female red fox three-tailed Kitsune anthro avatar (Jakkal's Werehouse), full Japanese Kimono (House of Zen) and geta sandals. Or Human female with nice skin (Second Skin Labs) and hair (Celestial Studios), wearing a ladies business suitcoat and skirt (House of Zen, again), with high heels. No bling.

Kendrew Mackay (Fox and Ground Employee): Male Human, nice skin (Second Skin Labs) and hair (by Robin Sojourner), full beard. Either a full-dress Clan Mackay kilt with all accessories, or a college professor look - tweed suit, white shirt, dress shoes.

Reisuki Kitsune (my SL daughter): Female white two tailed Kitsune (fox) anthro avatar (Jakkal's Werehouse), with nice hair (Celestial Studios). Japanese schoolgirl outfit (A nice one, not the typical freebie), accessorized with platform Mary Jane shoes and a book bag. Or jeans (by Robin Sojourner), sneakers, and a t-shirt with a pretty celtic design on it.

Feral Mill (My SL Brother): Male red fox anthro avatar (Jakkal's Werehouse), with hair by Robin Sojourner. Most often wears a black short-sleeved shirt with a laced up V-neck, and black leather slacks with good prim shoes. Or a full three-piece business suit (House of Zen).

Our household can be a *bit* more varied day by day, but here's our as well.

Sazzy Rosebud (my mommy). Realy nice skin, but I dun recall the maker. many hair options, largely from but not limited to Tami McCoy. Usually informal outfits (jeans and simple blouses/t-shirts) and light jewelry. Wedding ring. often some fashionable boots. Formals tend to be understated and classic.

Laurynce Book (my daddy). Another really nice skin, from Made Men. No hair (aside form facial hair, which is part of the skin). Also usually jeans and t-shirt, except when dressed in a formal, in which case it's usually a very nice tux. Wedding ring. Sneakers and.or dress shoes. Sometims a lightly blinging earring. More details in his own post, below :-)

Pygar Bu (my brother). Custom skin by Robin Sojourner. Robin Sojourner eyes. Hair was until yesterday braids from Thug Life, nor a pair of dreadlocks by A D I M U. black angel wings. self-made blue halo. Skoopf limited editional RFL skates (with the skate retracted). Fairly simple outfits, often freebies (there's not a great deal of 'boys" outfits out there).

Marianne McCann (me). Finally, someone in the family I know all the details on. Skin vanilla/chocolate kids' yummy skin by Robin Sojourner. Robin Sojourner dark topaz eyes, Hair, Tami McCoy double trouble kids dark brown, ID bracelet on right arm, self-made friendship brcelet on left. heart earrings and double locket by Karsten Rutledge, Glasses by Mad Designs, outfits tend to simpler designs by Angelina's Little Girl Clothes, Chelsea Children's Clothes, or Robin Sojourner's Kick The Can, shores are either by Karsten Rutledge, Jill Caldera (Heelys!), or Vertically Challenged if I'm feeling dressy.

Robin Howe (my sister). Skin by Robin Sojourner. Beach hair pulled back in San Dollar color, by Lost (she did the hair ribbon in it herself), Robin Sojourner eyes. Magic 8-ball ring by Lexi Burkes, sometimes a candy necklace by Linnian Sugar, similar clothing choices as me.

All bets are off if we're in a silly mood. Last night I don't know how many weird hair choices we went through, let alone funny glasses, teeth, noses, etc.

IM me ingame, I have some starters for you. Not so much on the freebie clothing, though. :(

I'm a year younger than you and my avatar has a few pairs of big clunky boots -- I sometimes wear clunky big boots irl. Sometimes my avatar wears tattoos, and I'll have one added to my skin if I finally decide on a pattern I like well enough -- then maybe I'll get it irl, too. Sometimes my avatar wears delicate footwear and no tatts, and sometimes I do irl . . . and if that ever gave anyone the impression I was old enough to be their mother, they never said so, and it didn't stop them from dating me even when I *was* old enough to be their mother, online or irl.

Don't worry about your age, and wear what you like to wear. This stuff is supposed to be fun. My mom has more fun in SL than anyone I know, and I have never noticed her worrying about her age or making her wardrobe choices based on anything other than what she liked herself or what would win her a prize for "Best in Purple."

On the subject of what avatars who've been here for a long time wear . . . what usually sets oldbies apart is customization. It's not so much about the fact that someone can pony up the L$ to customize. It's that someone who's been here a long time gains the skill to modify or create their own body parts and clothing, or else they have friends who do. Also, I think that once someone's in SL for a long time they learn more about what they can do with an avatar and about what they like, and they start experimenting with the way they look.

You should fear the outcome of that. I just bought bling for my RL shoes. ;)

Much, much easier for females to look sexy as the women have everything in sl especially clothes. And for the most part other then the problems with their butts looking overly large when wearing skirts or gowns, their clothes are usually well made.

Now, for guys, we have to deal with stupid fitting shoes, most notably clown sized shoes that look ridiculousy big. Pants that are low at the waist and shirts that are high at the waist. When they at least try to add length to guys shirts in most cases you can see the line where the other piece has been connected which doesn't always look good. Hats, like basebals type hats that are too big for the persons head as the bill on these caps look out of proportion to the hat itself. Lots more can be added on here but this is basically the main problems for men's clothing.

Many well made clothes for females, the same can't be said for men either in quantity or quality.

Another thing although not really related to this is the only people you see having sex in public view is usually the newbies or those who haven't really fixed themselves up. You don't see older better looking avs doing this out in shops or in other populated areas.

I too wear in SL what I would normally wear in RL - (except not to work, LOL)
I'm 35ish, and I actually have the tatooed arm and clunky boot look.

I guess some of us refuse to grow up. *grin*

I think that's because people who've been here for a while have established reputations and etc. and often some of their friends (or the whole world) know their RL identities, so they wear alts when they do the horizontal bop in public. I guess most of them don't invest great money and effort in dressing an avatar in clothes they're going to take off after 20 seconds!

I really love the unisex stuff at silent sparrow's. It's the type of clothing I'd like to wear in RL if I had the money.

Jeans. Tee-shirt. Chuck Taylors. A six-pack of Bud. Cool shades. An AWP.

Works in SL and in RL.

What more do you need?

So true! I wonder if low-prim is the new black?

It'd be cool to sponsor a hair making contest or skirt making contest, using prim attachments; the lowest-prim, most realistic looking attachment wins...

I wear regular stuff like jeans and t shirts unless going somewhere, then its a dress. My wedding dress was from Nonna Hedges and to die for. So yummy I put it on sometimes just as a reminder of how beautiful it is. Nonna is a genius.

I have bling in my wedding ring but generally hate bling and don't wear it other than the ring. Worn the same hair and skin for well over a year. I know things have moved on since then but I don't care. Mostly bare footed unless i am going somewhere.

Have been with my partner for 3 years (could be a world record lol) and apart from a change of hair, he looks exactly the same as when I first met him. I have on occasion dragged him off to a shop to buy something new, he wears it for the day and then never seen again :)

Have never tried being anything other than human and maybe i should try something else. Oh did have a HUGE snail av but that was impractical lol.

The new black... I like that.

Even though I'm a relative newb, My look is fairly low-prim. Most of the people I hang around with have been around for a while. I guess that's what happens when you buy on an old mainland sim. I may have subconsciously picked up on the look. I have prim geisha-pigtails but the base hair is stock, and I have primmed boots.

Note to Lindens: You basic non-prim footwear fails miserably.

On a side note, my other AVie is a several-hundred-prim 10m dragon

My skin is from Made Men and shape from Flesh inc. I can't seem to get the bling out of those earrings. (really need to get new ones without bling) The braided hair i have in inventory comes from Made Men also I think. Clothing is from all over. Favorites being FORMS and Renown for casual. Rebel Hope, Blaze, Made Men and DE designs for Formal. Shoes are typicaly from Shiny Things. Wedding rings for me and Sazzy are Limited Edition from Elexor Matador. Tattoos from FORM.

I don't consider myself an oldbie but I found the mega bling fascinating for all of a couple of weeks at best. I wouldn't consider myself a fashionista, but I do like to look nice. I prefer a subtle bling. I will put in props here for Alienbear and Ramos Jewelry.

I have one "Low-Lag Ceera" avatar that I created specificly for big meetings and gatherings. Human, nice skin, but the hair is no-prim hair with a nice Robin Sojurner texture, and the clothes are strictly prim-free. It's a lot easier than trying to attend while in a furry avatar that is wearing nice prim hair and prim shoes. And I never arrive with part of my outfit stuck to my butt! :D

People who have been around a while learn how to look nice without causing tons of lag.
