*totem posting sorry*
Was catching up with this thread, wow forgot all about it LOL I did make the male alt, and there is good male stuff out there, for free or close to free I am a bit fussy so I did spend a little, less than 500L (do not recall exact amount) and got a decent average looking male (well average for SL) I plan to make changes to him though, like make him a decent pair of shoes, and also redo his shape hehe but overall not too bad (If I had a snapshot on the HD I would show you, but I don't and do not feel like logging in at the moment) _____________________

I think that most everyone when they start an Avi play around with the sliders, play around with shapes. Then they tend to go with an "ideal" whether it be he-man or stripper-chic.
It's what happens after that that is interesting. I think that most more experienced residents that I have seen have gone away from some strange ideal and tried to create something that is unique and believable (in a suspension of disbelief sort of way). So I ended up shorter than most (which has caused me LOTS of clothing issues!), which got very much the effect and reactions I was looking for. I'm still not 100% happy with my face shape, and constantly make small tweaks... As for what I wear - it's often stuff that I wish that they made in RL, because I would wear it, if it were more socially acceptable. I love Bare Rose and DE Designs. I don't go for the "super-feminine" frilly stuff. Would love some more recommendations on places to go for good quality clothing along those lines. For work I wear traditional japanese outfits - lots of very nice ones around, from the super-formal princesses to the more modern-looking yet traditional stuff. _____________________

Can I add a big thumbs down here for male avitars blown up to the size of steroid laden gorillas with little tiny heads? Thank you, same goes for avatars wearing tons of armament. I often think, I'm sure glad I don't have to wear an avatar like that in order to feel like a man. ![]() One of the other looks that I have seen a lot in SL I classify as: Urban Grunge: tattered and worn out clothing. Sometimes partially mutated creatures, they like to hang out in urban slum environments, places that look like they are whats left after the last nuclear war. Armed with artifacts from previous generations such as pipes, srap metal, wrenches. Furnish warehouse apartments with dirty mattresses and tin cans. _____________________

I have to say that searching out good male cloths is a lot harder then female cloths. I find a lot of the male and female cloths stores have mostly female clothing and the stuff for us guys is tucked in some obscure corner as if only an after thought. As a newbie I ended up starting with outfits mostly from gun shops, added a trench coat and that was my look for the longest time, even after buying a new shape, skin and hair. Now I am mixing it up a little, but trying to keep the trench coat in my outfits as that seems to be my defining "Here comes Mortus" item.

I expect sexy female avarts to have brains and convers as well... otherwise it's like talking to a barbie doll. Why are the guys always expected to carry the whole conversation? And I have somthing about... giggles... they are cute when used sparingly... but when women giggle all the time.... argh Whew... better now. .d Well, obviously, Derbor, you and I have not met. I do not giggle, am highly intelligent and ridiculously sexy to boot. Maybe you're not looking in the right places? _____________________

I totally agree on this with one exception - DE Designs was mentioned a few posts up. I hate shopping, but that place is going to kill my budget. I wish I had discovered it earlier on. It would have saved me wandering around looking at the same pairs of jeans, cargo pants and weak business suits that are standard in almost every danged shop in SL that sells "men's clothing". To date, I've only found three sets of hair for men that I'm ok with. I've pretty much defined my look, and I tend to want to stick with it. Some people look different every time I see them. That's fine, and I sort of enjoy it, because I never know who's going to show up when I meet them, but I'm in a rut, I guess. _____________________

I'd have to say that gay men own the male avatar look. Look for rainbow flags if you want to see it done well. And the memo that we all get, but seems not to make it into the straight male community, is "don't min and max all the damn sliders." The tiny waist and 0% body fat on a guy offends the female (and gay male) eye worse than any of the bling or gangster clothes you can come up with. Avion, I think you might be right on this. Judging from the av you have created, I was highly impressed when I met you. I've been toying with creating another alt, male and I have to say your look is pretty much what I hope to be able to replicate, more or less if I ever get around to it. Not a duplicate of course, that would be creepy, but the aesthetics. Great skin, shape, clothing, etc. Plus, I've always wanted to be a gay man ![]() _____________________

I'm pretty dull and boring when you get down to it. my SL closet pretty much reflects my RL one in terms of clothing style, with a few "Special Occasion" outfits.

DE Designs ... the first place someone took me too when i was a newbie. true, great clothes. after 1-1/2 years, his jeans are STILL my favorites. trout ... have you visited FORM by any chance? or AITUI? I wish someone had taken me there when I was a newbie. I'll check out FORM. Aitui is one of the major exceptions to my earlier statements about nothing but cookie cutter garbage being available for men. Aitui is fantastic. Edit - Mortus. I didn't mean to imply that you meant every place. I made a pretty general statement. I was agreeing that there are far fewer decent men's places than women's places. The reason is obvious, but the result is unfortunate. As a very general rule, women like to shop for clothes more than men and have much larger wardrobes. This is true in SL as well as RL to some extent. This means that clothing designers focus on their primary market - women to the detriment of men. The result is that men, who would rather be doing other things, actually have to work harder to find things they like, or they just give up and get whatever garbage is available. I guess women have the opposite problem. There's too much stuff for them to wade through to pick out the really good stuff. I'm not really complaining - this is just life. I actually don't mind shopping in SL that much as long as I can drag someone along for company and advice (does this look stupid? How about this? Why can't I wear sandals and a trench coat with a business suit?, etc...). _____________________

I am not saying all of them. DE Designs is indeed a good shop, Blaze is good for formal stuff to. Good guys shops are out there, they are just in FAR fewer numbers than good clothing shops for females. Simone also has some good male clothes, you will have to search for the right section of the island though. I found a lot of various good shops to try by looking at the clothes on OnRez and Slexchange (getting the creators name, going in world, and going to their shop). _____________________

I have seen Trout in world. All I can say is that I do not recall what style he wears. I am, most of the time, distracted by his gigantic mass of hair. And how it seems to gain or lose whiteness as I watch. It is an amazing show. _____________________

Trends?
Regarding number 2. The no shirt tattoo look is played out although you wouldn't know it by the many who sport this look. Seems every guy and his uncle look exactly the same. I mean seriously, who wants to look like everyone else? I see many do but I think it's a lot better to have your own look which is easily obtainable with common sense. You go to a club and more then half the guys look the exactly the same. Who in their right mind wants to be in this situation? It's like a female getting a beautiful gown and showing up at a club or party only to see many other females wearing the same exact gown. No self pride. |

DE Designs is where all newbies go when first in sl. But after you've been here a while you move on to different clothes as they usually have the same type dark goth looking clothes all the time.
You want diversity, you want different styles and different colors and not the same type dark look all the time. |

I stand by that statement and will engage in fisticuffs with anyone who disagrees. Here Comes Trouble's Rocker is the other one I really like, but nothing beats good old Ozzy. _____________________

Trying to look sexy for an SL female is as easy as walking into any store. Trying to look sexy as a male avatar is so damn-near impossible, most resort to the "macho" look as a poor substitute for having the brains to converse and woo with conduct. Unfortunate, but true. i have a male alt, and yes i agree its almost impossible to get a decent look goin. however, after conferring with my mate we got him looking good! if you are willing to do some looking around, camp for a few freebies, and spend a few lindens, it is possible. and i have seen more and more established designers take up the mantle and are making really nice male clothing. among them are Gritty Kitty, if you wanna go witht he neko/goth/emo look, Armidi(sp) really nice jeans and t's, and Simone's i believe. adding to the list: Mischief with her Mis Male line and Pheonix rising(will check in world for the correct store and repost). is it hard to find decent male items in SL? yes, but not impossible if you put in the time. _____________________
There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Seriously: What is up with the changing levels of whiteness? Do you have more than one verison of that hair, in different colors, and keep shifting between them, or are my poor weak eyes playing games with me? I have the silver pack, and I'm kicking myself for not getting the whole bundle. Mine came with four different sets ranging from black grey to platinum. They shouldn't be changing as you watch, but I switch them around quite a bit depending on what I'm wearing and my mood. I don't do it when I'm standing around talking to people, though, so I don't know why it's changing color as you watch. Is it usually right after I say something stupid? Maybe having to put up with me affects your vision? _____________________

There are certain 'looks' that I've been seeing among older avatars who are able to purchase things and change the way they look. What trends have you been seeing? 1. Neko girl- I've been seeing several recently crawling around with their cat ears, tails, and whiskers.. All have nice hair, skins, skimpy dresses. Definitely looks like they've been doing a lot of shopping. 2. Tough guy - I see them so often I wonder if there's some kind of tough guy group where they all exchange ideas on clothing. They mostly have no shirt. Good skin. Tattoos. Good prim shoes and spikes and chains. Long hair. They are usually standing around with their arms folded or slouching. 3. Ballroom girl- I come across girls in full ballroom gowns in the strangest of places. You see one at the beach or shopping for animations. Usually they have lots of prim jewelry on. With me it depends on where I am visiting. Sometimes I will see a location snapped on Flickr or Snapzilla and it gives me an incentive to find a look that would fit in with the surroundings. I then have a look in mind when shopping. I can almost always find something I like at Curious Kitties, Nyte & Day, Artillerie, Bubblefish... But then sometimes I run around as a spider ![]() ![]() |
