Not to derail, but this brings up an important side point -- exactly how long do you have to have been here to be an Oldbie?

I think that's because people who've been here for a while have established reputations and etc. and often some of their friends (or the whole world) know their RL identities, so they wear alts when they do the horizontal bop in public. I guess most of them don't invest great money and effort in dressing an avatar in clothes they're going to take off after 20 seconds!

But isn't the thought of being with someone who looks really good and beautiful one of the if not the main reason for sex?
I don't know about anyone else but I'm sure most will agree you want to "bop" someone who looks sexy and not some plain newbie with zero looks and zero shape. Same as in rl, you go for the best looking one rather then just any plain looking person. So getting a new av and keeping it plain just to have sex just doesn't sound right. Where's the fun in that, looks play a very large part in sex.
Those who have been here for a while and have "reputations" I'm sure they still go off somewhere private to do their thing. Whether its with themselves or another av but I'm sure their other av looks as good also.

It's very possible to have a very well put together avatar for under 50L. The only thing I haven't managed to find a high quality freebie for is eyes. It's one of my favorite pastimes in SL- finding amazing deals and high quality freebies. I just wish I weren't limited to a certain number of avies- or I'd probably make a new one every few weeks just to do it all over again.

I'll admit I prefer Capella over all and I've spent a couple thousand Lindens on setting her up with a unique look- but my alt is a lot of fun to drag around the grid and not really worry about any reputation building... and she looks very nice- not at all traditional newbie.

Gnubie. Second floor, I believe.

My alt uses a freebie skin and the clearance rack hairs, and has exactly 2 pairs of shoes and 2 outfits. I know, I abuse her. But I still TRY to make her look nice without throwing tons of money at her. Thankfully, she has a name that can be interpreted as either male or female, so she can be a he at any time. Ironically, he has more clothes! :D

@capella: I like Opium's free eyes. They used to be right inside the door at the Free Dove, to the right. The color responds to sliders within limits, and the whites are very natural.

I got a whole box of eyes... either free or really cheap. I think it was in a mall in Monowai.

It's a clover-leaf shaped thing with four levels towards the middle of the sim. *racks her brain*

Xanthony! that's the name of it.

Jeepers Creepers has some of the best looking men's shoes I've found in game, especially their H&H dress oxfords.

I bought some of these for my boyfriend and he loved them. He's never worn or shopped for another pair of shoes or boots since.

E. Spengler's Footwear also has some traditional non flashy styles that look really nice in the ads, but I couldn't buy them as a gift because they were no transfer.

Thank you, finally added eyes to my list! (I've never cared for the opium eyes for some reason, they always seemed way too flat compared to my SinSkins eyes) Xanthony sells for 100L, no eye freebies anymore =/

And they don't even bring my total over 50L ^.^

/shoves topic a bit more back on topic.

No. YMMV.

A lot of people know perfectly well what their "bopping" partners look like irl (and some of them have done the deed with the same people irl) or are probably into imagining what they look like irl, and what their avatars look like in a lot of those cases doesn't always matter so much.

Jeepers Creepers are very nicely made, but I've decided they really aren't my style, the Jame Deans I bought are way too pointy for my taste and when I put on the riding boots my partner laugh and asked why I'd bought a pair of uggs (ughs? ugghs?) Those and the Trashville Riding boots were the only ones close to anything I'd wear.

(They are gone now, thanks!)
If anyone wants a pair of James Deans or Giddyap Black Riding boots, IM me in world and they are yours. (I'm keeping the Biker Boots).

There are some really nice realistic eyes at the Free Dove. They're by darkskye designs. The landmark to his store is wrong though... What I mean by older avatars is just people who have the lindens and more importantly the basic SL knowledge to make their avatars look exactly like they want. So no... not really old in real life, or old in appearance in SL, or even being past a certain rez date. And I'm not pointing these trends out to make fun of anyone. I'm just making observations that there are actually trends out there.

Oh and thanks for all the neat store suggestions...

Before October 2006....... lol j/k

Is it really about time?... or is it more to do with presence? Some 'newcomers' can come into game and seem to slot straight in, others can be here a lifetime and still have the presence of a newbie.

One of the biggest trends I notice among older SL veterans is AV versatility. They've been here a while and have collected lots of stuff, and seem to have a better idea about the best ways to use it for effect. They've monkeyed around with different looks and seem to have a lot of them pegged for their specific AV. I also notice they seem to be further along on achieving the vision they had for their AV. Things like finely tuned shapes and perfectly aligned prims are good indicators.

Deep inventories =D People who can pull a nun costume out on the fly or who really do have a pair of shoes or hair that would match *perfectly* with any new acquisition, in the right color of course. =) Lots of things you would never put on a "must have" list, but that really do make things a bit richer for existing. Not everyone keeps a Christmas tree in the closet!

Where can I find a Nun Costume? *It's strictly for Educational purposes, of course*

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I saw one with a whip and a ruler somewhere on the grid. My brain shut down and my eyes twitched and so I went for the witch costume instead.

This is not right. Switching back and forth between male and female with the same avie, now that's a scary thought for an unsuspecting person trying to get together whether it's female or male.

Yeah, been there, those definitely aren't my style. I may check out that Spengler you mentioned. My favorites in my inventory are a pair of brown hiking boots I got from DE Designs, some wingtips I picked up at Simone's and a couple of pair of boots I picked up at Shiny Things. (And my Rain Siegel Motorcycle Boots)

I have a swapper too- gender neutral name etc etc. Generally speaking I only drag it out when I'm looking to be incognito and it doesn't really make long term friends of it's own. Very convenient to have your "boyfriend" log on and chase off those pesky noobs who won't leave you alone!
