I was pretty mono-clothed until the resident-who-was-to-become-my-partner took me to DE Designs. Still my favorite clothing store.

Shoes that don't look cartoonish (have some Shiny Things I like)

A pair of knee height black boots that are covered with chrome spikes.

Got tons of jeans, but can always use a nice looking pair.

Some nice slacks.

Oxford shirts

DE Designs and Shiny Things boots, great for guys and girls! Not cheap but worth the investment

My clothes are a result of 9-months of very labor-intense and picky shopping and I still haven't found any male shoes worth a tinker's damn that weren't so spike-laden they looked like kiddie-shit.

Jeepers Creepers has some of the best looking men's shoes I've found in game, especially their H&H dress oxfords.

Trying to look sexy as a male avatar is so damn-near impossible, most resort to the "macho" look as a poor substitute for having the brains to converse and woo with conduct.

I've seen a lot of that: this said, I have also seem some well-crafted male avatars out there, without being the typical cookie-cutter "gangsta". For example:

As for wearing a ball gown out to shop- why not? Seriously! Why not? It's no weirder than putting on a metric ton of bling.

There's nothing I love more than a dressy top and jeans or slacks though. I only break out the skirts if I'm going to a fashion show or working on product shoots. The swooshy-ness of even the tamest skirts out there is just too distracting for constant wear.

I'm working on a designer freebie shopping list for my next alt at the moment, and I agree- I've seen very few male oriented stuff out there that you don't have to sift through a million boxes for. About half of the hair designers have a male box (usually one, compared to 3-4 for girls) and none of the skin shops had a newbie box for guys in easy reach. Clothing, bah virtually nothing. Certainly convinced me to stay on my side of the gender lines.

This really depends on where you hang out as to what you see. I was starting to think that SL had lost some of its creativity and then once I opened the new Botanical Gardens and started watching my visitors it was very clear that this was not at all the case. People have largely segregated into communities that suit their taste. There are tons of people doing medieval roleplay, victorian roleplay, fantasy roleplay, furries, dragons, tinies, ect... You just don't see all those folks hanging out a clubs or at most large shopping areas because those spots aren't relevant to the way non-traditional folks are using SL. The most creative people I know in SL don't have "normal" avatars: Khamon is a Sprite, Jopsy is an Elf, Higbee is an Ent, Laukosargas is an Angel. (And I'm a Wood Nymph) The range of creativity in avatars in SL continues to astound me....

Been to both. DE has become a place mostly for leather and role-play clothes. I admit I have thousands of L$ of his stuff.

Shiny Things is another of my haunts although she is 99 44/100% female. lately she has been playing with sculpties and making old-lady shoes. Better off buying her disney-esque flowers.

Among the older content creators, low-prim is hot. Go to any event or Linden office meeting that deals with content creators, and you can have a whole hoarde of dozens of them with almost no render lag :)

If you hang around, you will find female thumbs-downs for 99% of the crap the men are doing to themselves in SL trying to look sexy or cool.

And that's my point. It's a girl's game.

Sounds like a good niche market for someone with talent. Male avis created in consultation with females about what they really do want to see :D

Trying to look sexy for an SL female is as easy as walking into any store.

Trying to look sexy as a male avatar is so damn-near impossible, most resort to the "macho" look as a poor substitute for having the brains to converse and woo with conduct.

Unfortunate, but true.

I expect sexy female avarts to have brains and convers as well... otherwise it's like talking to a barbie doll. Why are the guys always expected to carry the whole conversation?

And I have somthing about... giggles... they are cute when used sparingly... but when women giggle all the time.... argh

Whew... better now.

Agreed that there are some excesses, but what’s the problem with men looking masculine and women looking feminine?
How RL do you want you SL to be?
Besides, plenty of ladies with the Barbie tush and boobs, so…

It's the newbies who constantly trigger those incessant giggles and other sounds they think are cute.

Usually, I just turn off sounds until they leave.

I have no problem whatsoever with women looking feminine and men looking masculine.

To look believably feminine in SL a woman need merely walk into any store or freebie shop.

To look believably masculine in SL, a male is absolutely screwed.

yeah when I do shapes for myself (female) I never value it on the slider #'s
I always watch the shape changes and decide if I like it or not

I always sit there and giggle uncontrollably whenever i'm adjusting my alt's "package". Coin Purse? Duffle bag? So funny!!! yeah yeah so I'm immature. :p

"Package" or whatever called by any other name is an avatar joke with its "growth" looking more like an overweight problem than a male badge of equipment.

It's a joke and if you've ever *really* tried it you would agree.

For the umteenth time for chrissakes, it's a *girls* game.

One thing I've also noticed... so many avs have arms that are far too short for their legs. I always think of thalidomide babies.

Isn't it the case that in most graphical environments, the female avatars are more attractive than the male avatars? I remember watching World of Warcraft over my ex's shoulder from time to time (couldn't really get interested in playing it myself) and it struck me that the female avatars were quite pretty, many of them, while the male ones were ... meh. I'm not sure that it's as easy to make an attractive male avatar as it is to make an attractive female avatar, to be honest -- not only in SL.

Barbies for grown-ups - I've said it all along.

That said, there are nice mens clothing if you look hard enough. Suits from Blaze or MIA. Naughty Island has wonderful oxford style shirts - both buttoned and unbuttoned on the jacket layer I believe, so you can layer with a t shirt. Also fantastic jeans at Naughty - some have demos so you can try them first.

Shoes - Jeepers Creepers has excellent men shoes.

Skins - Nomine has great skins at $700 - you cant beat them.

As far as oldbies and trends, I think the older your av is, the more attention to pay to quality and detail. I'd rather spend $1000 on one amazing dress than 4 $250 ho hum outfits.

I always attributed that to the fact that females are always nicer to look at than males, but that may just be my bias talking.

Oh, and some nice chamois and denim shirts would put me in heaven :)

Humm…thinking about it now. Most of the other men I know have reasonable shapes and attire.
/me thinks the ladies are having too much fun with their boy toy alt avatars

I like packages with multiple colors so I have a full range of mix and match to work with- I very rarely buy a single outfit unless its amazing and very unique or from a designer I don't trust to accurately represent what I'm getting.

The problem with the difference between male avies and female avies is that you can fully dress a pretty darn stylish female avie for less than 50L total (some of those freebies aren't free- but most are). It's easy if you know what you're looking for, and you come out with a decent starter closet, several dozen hair styles in full ranges of color, and several skin choices. You just can't do that with guys.

Renegade has some real good clothes for $49 to $99 that look like stuff you really wear.
Other good places, my opinion, for clothes: Shai creations, Sini Style, FORM, FNKY. FNKY has very good shoes for wearing a suit, good sunglasses.

Make it "coin purse". Anything else looks like a disease on an avatar.

As far as I've come across no skin has beat Naughty's yet.

Avoid bling. Avoid base hair made up into spikes.

Keep telling yourself there's nothing wrong with being called a metrosexual.

I have seen a lot of old avvys that wear no prims or very little. It's as if they can remember a time when everyone walked around primless and they don't mind. And yes I've also seen a lot of people who pretty much wear whatever they want to and don't fit any particular trend. I really wasn't sure how to include them here.

7. The fashionista. A girl avatar wearing everything expensive and good looking. Nice shape. Hair. Shoes. Clothes. Probably the biggest group out there.

8. Slave girl. There are way too many slave girls running around barefoot in those little silk ... uhmm... robes?

..men's clothes... aitui, renegade, de designs, last call, mia... etc...
