I'm sure the people who made those comments above will likely do some hand waving and tell me I need to grow a thicker skin.

Ohh do you mean how you told others to grow a thicker skin?:

You are _really_ starting to p*ss me off.

Oh and you most definitely need to grow a thicker skin. This board isn't SL, where people are usually nice. This is RL, where message boards sometimes get testy. If you think that making this comment is an insult, well, it just proves my point. .

The moronic responses to DogSpot in this thread are really pathetic.

It's like you're all a bunch of idiots with IQ of 2 and you can not form coherent, logical arguments about anything.

Your opinions are clearly worthless and don't deserve to be read. Why doesn't everyone just put you all on ignore? I don't know why.

Do us all a big favor, get a life, get off the drugs, start taking prozac, get a girlfriend and move out of your parents basement. Just leave us all the F*** alone.

Yah. That's exactly what you sound like. Are you all really happy with this? Do you really think this is productive in any way whatsoever?

The only way to do that is to pay careful attention to shenanigans and press the red button and report it.

I'm sure the people who made those comments above will likely do some hand waving and tell me I need to grow a thicker skin.
I'm not going to argue the particulars of how you've come to your conclusions - no need.

Your method, however...

For over five years I worked with at-risk children. These kids (mostly teens) delighted in tearing into one another physically, verbally and emotionally. For the most part, all I really had to do was break up the fights before they became dangerous. Ocasionally I'd have to seperate one from the rest to keep the peace. But on the whole, the almost-controlled chaos worked well as status quo becasue things did get settled eventually as they got to know one another.

The young fellows who would wreck this dynamic and cause me untold greif weren't the bullies. It was the ones who railed against the fighting. They called it unjust, uncivilised, and unfair and were determined to bring it to an end.

Of course, they were right. Such an environment is uncivilised and often unjust and unfair.

However, changing it is impossible by way of force. The boys fought no longer simply becasue they were agressive, but now becasue they were threatened. And since the "less civilised" were more willing to deal out the damage - they were used to it, after all - guess who was the one in the infirmary every time?

There was only one way I could reagain the control over the house I needed to run it. I had to teach the child who wanted the civilised environment how we ran our program.

I assure you, the method did not involve reporting the others to me, or making threats, or telling them they were wrong to be doing what they were doing. All these things are woefully inneffective.

The technique I tought was one of simple reward and peer modeling. To encourage the behaviors you want, and to always respond with the proper behaviors - no matter the provocation.

Teaching a teenaged boy how to do this was time consuming, and they rarely got a grasp of it in the short time I had to teach them. But, they were just kids - that's to be expected.

Fortunately here we're adults. If you want to start changing the tone of the boards, stop matching the tone. Be the voice of civility, the calmed and reasoned voice. Reward those who act similarly by taking to them, praising thier presentation, and then responding with your own views similarly. For those who bully or provoke - ignore them entirely, no response, and definately no chiding.

It takes time, but people generally perfer to discuss issues without fighting. Eventually you'll find more and more people being civil.

It will never be the perfect lil world. There are simply too many personalities involved. There comes a point where you just have to let it be - and concentrate on your own behavior and worth.

Ask him about his admission about gaming the forums with alts. He even claims he has one in the "cool kids" clique. I think he should write a book about his experiences.

So just report it and move on.

For Pete's sake, report what you don't like, let LL decide if people need disciplining, and get on with your Second Life. Your not going to change people. I dunno what it is with folks who refuse to use the ignore feature if they are so offended by someone. Not doing so just lends to idiotic discussions like this one.

This discussion is only idiotic because so few people have chosen to even discuss the topic.

Instead, what I call "the usual suspects" have chosen to attack, insult and dismiss myself and others.

All of which pretty much proves my point. As soon as someone gets out of line or is the least bit contary, the usual suspects start with their usual shenanigans.

I want to thank all of you, in particular, the usual suspects for showing everyone exactly how you operate. It was exactly what I wanted out of this thread and folks have delivered far better than I could have dreamed.

The sad fact is that I could AR all day long and nothing will change. The same people will cause the same disruptions with their antics.

It's too bad really because some of the "usual suspects" seem to be smart people and might have something truly amazing to contribute if so much time wasn't spent in service of their egos (often at the expense of others).

Whatever floats yer boat, I guess.

Have fun. I'm putting the usual suspects on ignore so I don't have to listen to the claptrap anymore.

I don't want some other "rulers". I just want people to be able to come here and not live in fear that they're gonna get ARed if they step out of line.

This statement right here is very telling, and so ironic I feel like my head is going to explode. You got a warning for something, so now you are using a scorched earth strategy and taking everyone else down with you, and couching it under the guise of "I don't want people to be in fear of being ARed". Well, it is not about being ARed. I can AR myself, I can AR my cat, Ulrika, Cocoanut, Philip Linden, and the entire cast of Desperate Housewives. However, the reason YOU were warned is because whatever it was that you did violated the TOS and LL decided it warranted a warning.

So I am sure now like a dutiful person, you are going to make sure they don't miss any TOS violations from anyone. Make sure that includes EVERYONE. Not just the people you think are bullies. EVERYONE. It's about being noble and protecting everyone, right? Thing is, had you never violated the TOS in the first place, all the ARs in the world would not get you in trouble. It is pretty disingenous to say you ware doing this so people don't have to live in fear of being ARed for stepping out of line, while ARing people you consider as having stepped out of line. Sorry, that is just fucked up. At least call a spade a spade and just admit you are doing this because you are mad you got a warning, deserved or not.

PS - I concur with Nolan. If you are going to report somone, just report them and be quiet about it. You don't get a cookie, or a medal, or an award for reporting. No one is keeping score, so all the "I'm reporting you!" posts just seem childish. Now make sure you report my cat. His name is Sonic, and he thinks this thread is ridiculous too.

My comedy sensor is going off.

It amuses me greatly that someone, who's presumably an adult would run off to Mommy & Daddy Linden to report that the mean, mean DogSpot insulted them and hurt their feelings.

The fact that someone would do that says more about this alleged community than anyone's post could.

I really do find it amazing that someone would resort to grade school tactics to "punish" me.

Whoever did this, grow up. This is the internet, not some genteel parlor where everyone is always nice to each other.

The real world is not like some silly classroom where we all respect each others "special-ness" and pass the talking stick aound so we can each have a turn expressing our opinions, cause they are all "equally valid."

DogSpot,

Are there opinionated, intelligent, vocal, sarcastic, witty people in these forums with incredibly strong personalities? Fuck yeah, and I would not want it any different,

Don't mistake an abusive personality for a strong one. In my experience it is usually a sign of weakness.

No kidding.

Strong personalities don't spend hours and hours obsessing about other people.

They obsess about themselves!
