This is actually a position that has been put forth in the past, with qualification: You need to be on a certain victim list in order to have your own personal attacks qualify as acceptable. The forums are (to quote Douglas Adams) "mostly harmless." Nothing more and nothing less. Put them in the proper context, accept that humans are imperfect, don't take things personally even when they're personal, and join in... or set yourself off to the side and refuse to play until someone fixes human nature (aka when hell freezes over). What you are saying is what we see on the forums - the way the forums are - is the inevitable result of "human nature." That no force, no policies, no rules, no enforcement, no cooperation, no effort - nothing - can ever change these forums from what they are right now. I guess when I am talking but right and wrong I really mean "wrong according to the balance of opinion on the forum." As I said, I am most often not smart enough to take this advice myself (although I do sometimes), but if you look at the thread, and you are debating three or four forum regulars, and they all think you are wrong, and most of the ancillary posters also think you are wrong, whether *you* think you are wrong or not, the best course of action is to stop debating. That was my main point. Everyone in Neualtenburg is probably breaking up right now as I am famous in that forum for *not* stopping my arguments, and *continuing* to argue even though most dont agree with me, but I *do* try (to stop). The exception would be if you have some really cogent new facts or something that blows the rest of them all out of the water, but it's also good to keep in mind that possesion of those kind of facts is a pretty rare thing. Instead of posting the latest argument that comes "off the top of your head," if one stops and really thinks about it, usually one sees that one is *not* in possesion of any "debate-ending" material at all. Believe it or not, I do this all the time since mostly my opinions dont seem to match up with *anyone* on any of the big issues. I am wrong over and over of course, but I find if I stick to these kind of rules, I am wrong a lot less than I would have been otherwise, and I dont end up in that horrible position where you are stuck defending some rash statement you made to dozens of people simultaneously even though you aren't sure you even want to believe in it anymore yourself.  I have cogent new facts, all right. This whole thing came up again because of the treatment of DogSpot and of Jack and his lady. Why - on earth - would I ever stop saying to stop treating posters with riducule and derision? How could I ever start to believe that was in any way right? Particularly when the TOS backs me up? I can never see a really dire instance of this and not speak up. I don't know what you are arguing about in Neuraltenberg, but if you are arguing for the Neuraltenberg citizens to stop griefing the guests (not that they are, or ever would - but it is what I am doing here), then I suggest you don't EVER stop arguing for that. And why would I care if three or four regulars think I am wrong? I don't change my principles based on what three or four, or thirty or forty regulars think. Basically, I think the whole argument comes down to two camps: (1) We reserve the right to be as nasty as we wanna be. Grow a thick skin, or get out. (2) No, read the TOS. Follow the TOS. Discuss topics, but treat others and their opinions with respect. I'm gonna stick with (2) no matter how many names I get called for it, or how many neurotic disorders I'm accused of having. Not only is it a matter of simple adult civility, it is also better for SL not to drive people away. coco _____________________

If one, however, says "Attention Whores do Y", then only by self-identification (i.e., someone jumping up to yell that they think you just called them one, thus self-identifying) is one actually known to BE an attention whore.
