From: Kiamat Dusk I will never be in favor of getting rid of the death penalty. Well, that's pretty heartless. So you don't care how many innocents are murdered, then? It makes no difference to you? I'll alert their families. From: someone And I've gone back and editted "babies" to "unborn children". And you still haven't reconciled how you can be so capricious about killing unborn children and so staunchly in favor of allowing those convicted of heinous acts to live, especially to live on the public dime. Even with the re-write, that showed your true feelings. Well, despite your manipulation of language for propaganda purposes, I define a human being as one who can live outside the womb. That means I'm opposed to third-trimester abortions, but if they require the mother's sustenance to continue developing, I've no problem with that. I am also decidedly not pro-abortion. I believe society should do whatever it can within current law to limit the number of abortions - provide birth control, have effective pre-natal care, have effective adoption services, and educate young adults on all options available to them. Meanwhile, the anti-choice side manipulates science and language so they can reach their ultimate goal: banning all abortions. From: someone Not that I expect an answer mind you. Just saying... No, I actually answer questions and accusations. Found a cut-off number yet?

From: Kiamat Dusk You're being a victim gives you no extra credibility. While I am very sorry you had to endure those horrors, there are plenty of victims who believe that molestors should be executed.
Does your state have mandatory minimums for sexual predators? If not, have you written your representatives to get that changed?
And no possibility of parole does not equate to no possibility of escape.
-Kiamat Dusk I didn't say it gave me extra credibility, I am simply stating that it wouldn't change what happened and I'm good with the life w/o parole option (with chemical castration, Kendra ). I probably shouldn't have even mentioned it. I also work in a maximum security prison. Prison escapes are pretty rare. County jail escapes are much more common. There are different levels of custody, also. A sexual predator with life w/o parole would be under the maximum level of custody. Could they escape? I guess it's possible, but then, if you're willing to live with the risk of someone innocent being put to death for a crime they didn't commit, I guess I'm willing to live with the very slight possibility that a prisoner might escape.

From the International Dictionary of Medicine and Biology. John Wiley & Sons, 1986. Volume 1. Baby: A child between birth and the age of achievement of walking, about 14 months; an infant. From: Kiamat Dusk What part of "never" are you having trouble with? So then you don't have a problem with innocent people being killed? By the way, I notice yet again you did not respond to any of my other points.

-Kiamat Dusk I'm all for mandatory sentences - when the person who confesses actually did the crime. There are plenty of cases of people accused of child molestation who (on poor advice of counsel) go ahead and plead guilty, even though they really didn't do anything - it was just the girlfriend (or boyfriend) being spiteful. Case in point: A man was accused by his girlfriend of molesting her children. The children said it didn't happen. The man said it didn't happen. His attorney said he might as well plead guilty because he didn't think they'd be able to win in court (in Florida)... So he did. A few months later, the woman told her entire family at a picnic that she lied - then she blew her brains out in front of them. The man has no recourse. He must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, even though he didn't do anything.

From: Kiamat Dusk None of that. The only thing you've come out strongly against is the death penalty. The only thing you've come out strongly for is lenience. The only thing you've come out strongly for is murder.

From: Kiamat Dusk Exactly. Nor will your arguments change mine. As I've said before, these threads are not for the participants-they are for the spectators. And the more they see of your dodging, your failure to come out strongly in defense of the victims rather than the predators, the more they see the hypocrisy of your position, the more likely they are to agree with mine and help keep the death penalty safe, legal, and rare. (although, I'd argue that it is far too rare atm.) And coming out strong doesn't mean coming out in favor of the death penalty, either. Some shock and disgust at the light sentences demonstrated here would have been nice. Maybe some calls for the judges' resignation or immediate changes to the laws that allowed them to get off so easily? How many of you are pushing for Jessica's Law or Megan's Law in your states if they don't already have them? How about using some stronger language to describe the people who've committed these disgusting acts? Something a bit stronger than "they're sick". Like they've got a cold or something. None of that. The only thing you've come out strongly against is the death penalty. The only thing you've come out strongly for is lenience. -Kiamat Dusk HELLO KIAMAT, ARE YOU IN THERE???? What part of at least a 20 yr sentence with no chance of parole are you not reading?????????????????????? How is that leniant????????????????????

From: Siobhan OFlynn Sally, they might escape. Well, if we're going to do things based on "mights", then my "they might be innocent" theory carries more weight, unless you don't care if someone is innocent or not. Actually, imprisoning sex offenders would be a great use for Gitmo. Can we arrange that? That would be awesome.

From: Kiamat Dusk And while you think about that...here's another one... The Trial of Joseph Edward Duncan From Charles Montaldo, Your Guide to Crime / Punishment. FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Background and Latest Developments Joseph Edward Duncan III was out on a $15,000 bond in Minnesota for molesting a 7-year-old boy, when three people were killed in an Idaho home and their two children kidnapped. Six weeks later, Duncan was arrested after he was spotted in a restaurant with eight-year-old Shasta Groene. Duncan has been charged in Idaho state court with three counts of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping in the deaths of Brenda Groene, Slade Groene, and Mark Mckenzie. He will also face federal charges for the kidnappings of Dylan and Shasta Groene and for Dylan's murder. http://crime.about.com/od/current/a/duncan.htm-Kiamat Dusk Being out on bond means you haven't been tried for the original crime yet. Are you for rescinding the "innocent until proven guilty" part of being charged and tried for a crime? I'm not saying that the crime wasn't heinous. I'm not saying that it's not a tragedy, but if you're arrested for a crime, in the United States of America, you are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. or am I mistaken?

Also, can't bail be refused, if the risk of flight is high enough? I mean, honestly, who would've complained if a judge had refused bail in that case?

Don't you people have jobs!? Sheesh! Ok, lemme play catch up here.... From: Toni Bentham Well, that's pretty heartless. So you don't care how many innocents are murdered, then? It makes no difference to you? I'll alert their families. If you know who the innocents are who will be put to death already, you need your own hotline! From: Toni Bentham I define a human being as one who can live outside the womb. That means I'm opposed to third-trimester abortions, but if they require the mother's sustenance to continue developing, I've no problem with that. "Even a premature birth as early as 23 weeks now means a good chance of survival for a baby." http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/premature-birth/DS00137For those of you keeping score at home-that is the second trimester. And I know from raising two children from birth that they "require the mother's sustenance to continue developing" long after birth. From: Toni Bentham I am also decidedly not pro-abortion. I believe society should do whatever it can within current law to limit the number of abortions - provide birth control, have effective pre-natal care, have effective adoption services, and educate young adults on all options available to them. So what are you doing to ban third trimester (and by your own definition, second trimester) abortions in your state? I'm sure it doesn't have such a ban already since every state that has passed such bans has been challenged by your friends at Planned Parenthood. There was a federal law to ban it as well, but Planned Parenthood took care of that one, too. ..for now. So what actions are you taking to "do whatever [you] can within current law to limit the number of abortions"? From: Siobhan OFlynn ...if you're willing to live with the risk of someone innocent being put to death for a crime they didn't commit, I guess I'm willing to live with the very slight possibility that a prisoner might escape. And that's perfectly sensible. I completely understand the idea of life in prison with no possibility of parole. I can respect that position even if I don't support it in this case. Both positions seek to remove the threat the offender poses. Mine is just gauranteed and, once the capital punishment system is streamlined and more efficient, costs much less. My issue is while you say this stuff, I don't sense a lot of conviction. I don't see the kind of disgust and contempt for these criminals that I would expect. I don't see the kind of stunned anger that a judge could be so foolish as to give a confessed child molester a light sentence or cheap bail. That's my issue. Aside from that, I can happily agree to disagree. So, one more time I'm going to ask you: What are you doing to make sure sexual predators get life in prison in your state? From: Armandi Goodliffe So, what is the acceptable level of mistaken executions and what is the correct method for the government to compensate a deceased whose life was taken in error? Pay attention! I will never be opposed to the death penalty. I may be opposed to how the system gets people to the penalty or the crimes which are eligible for the death penalty, but I do believe that some crimes are, by their very nature, so heinous that death is the only just response. And I believe that some criminals are so dangerous, that death is the only way to properly remove the threat they pose to society. If someone is put to death due to negligence by the State, then the State should compensate the surviving family based on what the dead person would earn in a lifetime-like with a wrongful death suit. From: Siobhan OFlynn Post partum psychosis is a very different illness than post partum depression. From the article: "Psychiatrists in Yates' original trial testified she suffered from schizophrenia and postpartum depression..." From: Siobhan OFlynn I also believe I pointed out that she was no longer on death row, that she'd been granted a new trial.
From: Siobhan OFlynn I cannot believe you just used that argument. And, guess what, Andrea Yates is currently sitting on death row for doing just that....even though she is certifiably insane. I'm glad she's getting a new trial, not that I think she should be free, I just don't think an insane woman should get the death penalty. Well, you were half right... From: Siobhan OFlynn Being out on bond means you haven't been tried for the original crime yet.
Certainly not mistaken, but it's not uncommon for judges to deny bail to keep potentially dangerous people off the street until things can be sorted in a court of law. In this case, more prudence from the judge would have kept the resulting tragedy from happening. Once again, you're more worried about the offender and not the victims. I'm showing disgust for the lack of prudence on the part of this judge and the resulting tragedy and you're going off about innocent until proven guilty and bail. Well, I think that just about wraps it up for now. I'm off to that other thread... -Kiamat Dusk
