That is a digital copy of a tangible product. You could in fact take the graphic from your virtual t-shirt you just bought, print it out and place it on a real blank t-shirt just like your downloaded song.

Do you own the rights when buying it to do such a thing? From what I understand you are buying the rights to only use that product ingame. Though I may be wrong and I may not truly understand the legality's of SL system.

That doesn't matter anyways. In WOW you can buy a virtual sword with +20 to fire or something. Does that make it a real product? You can print your sword out on a shirt and wear it, but it's still not a real product.

If SL is a game then what is the set goal? What are the set rules? And please don't site(sic) the TOS as the rules of the game. They are not game rules and there is no goal set by LL. The only goals are what an individual may set for themselves.

Btw... I've been out of school since 1977 so you're not talking to someone who hasn't been around the block a few times.

For someone who has been out of school that long, you show surprising lack of understanding of what games are. SimCity is a game without any goals beyond what the player chooses for himself. For that matter, so is Lego(tm).

A game does not need set goals. In the best games, the only real rules and limits are your imagination.

You obviously don't understand the point I was trying to make. Your selling a product that is owned by LL. Not a product that you yourself own and can take with you. Web designers, programmers, etc. provide a product that is REAL not virtual.

You are mistaken. Linden Lab long ago granted all content creators in SL the rights to their intellectual property. LL does not own anything I make in-world.

And incidentally, an mp3 file is no more or less a 'tangible' product than anything sold in SL.

tan·gi·ble adj.

1. Discernible by the touch; palpable: a tangible roughness of the skin.
2. Possible to touch. 3. Possible to be treated as fact; real or concrete: tangible evidence. 4. Possible to understand or realize: the tangible benefits of the plan. 5. Law. That can be valued monetarily: tangible property.

According to definitions 1 and 2, no data is tangible; but according to the other three definitions, data may certainly be considered a tangible item.

Not really.. at least not with any condoned means. Items with permissions don't let you save textures to the harddrive.. you'd have to use 3rd party software which is still questionable in nature.. plus SL clothing usually has really bad resolutions for blowing up for t-shirts

a much wiser solution would be selling high resolution vector art on real websites like real businesses do or something

stuff you make is SL is pretty much limited to.. being in SL. ESPECIALLY things written with LSL. That scripting language translates to nowhere else yaknow.

For the moment you are right. And HTML wasnt immediately useful elsewhere, and neither were MP3s or the other various protected forms of digitial distributions... And that may change, who knows when the first "Buy it in SL and IRL" tshirt shop will open inworld? Where you could download a high quality print to transfer to a shirt, or get the real shirt with your inworld purchase?.. None of this is out of the realm of possible.

lol... Good for you, I prefer to stick to thought that has a rational basis, but to each his own ;p

So you are suggesting my thought is irrational? I hope you stick to your words because THE INTERNET IS SERIOUS BUSINESS. Here's a thought or two, and I assure you these facts are very rational:

- You are playing a video game.
- You whine when you can't play your video game, and when your views are questioned they are considered "irrational" because you know, no one else is as smart as you are, or has the logical ability to come up with rational thought.

That is true. There are simulation type games... However, those are intended to be used as games, and cannot really be used for any other purpose. You also usually cannot really CREATE items or services that others would or could buy. Really those are small little things to hedge something on being a game or not anyways... Just because SL is in 3d and on a computer, people are trying to confuse things..

You obviously have no idea what the definition of fact is.

PROVE this is a "video game"

Then you might be able to PROVE the second comment. And I consider what you said irrational due to the fact you sound like a "sheep". Someone who follows the shepherd around and does what he says. I cant help it you cant come up with your OWN logical reasons for thinking what you do. Nor can I force you to realize you are wrong.

It's cold and dark outside here. I'm not going out there, I'll be eaten by a grue.

Okay this made me chuckle.

Alot of people now adays are turning SL into a business within the game. Just check out the main page here at the article that BuinessWeek did on the game. Some are making a very provitable business from this. Some have made things within game that outside companies are buying. SL really is a tool more than a game.

As for the "go outside" remarks..not all people can do this. Some have to stay indoors or are confined to beds or wheelchairs and it's not as easy on them as most. I understand what you mean by saying this..but just take time to think before you post. You don't know who you might be hurting by saying stuff like this. Just my thoughts on this.

I concede on that point although I have already written it into another post. The point is, if I were to make a "GAME" that you could create your own objects in. It is obviously a game and has set objectives. Then people were to start selling models and objects ingame for the game, does that make it more than a game? No. It still makes it a game where its possible to earn real life money in.

Like if you were to sell gold for a MMO on e-bay. It's still a game but your making money.

No build, and no outside scripts. I'm doing that to my little 512sq meter plot of land as soon as I go back in.

Everyone must do it! Everyone...must...do...ittttttttt.

Except these have a height limitation of 40 meters.

A. Sorry to hear you are going because of what some really sad people have done.
B. At least you have monetary value in your land, and are able to "move out" unlike a game where your time and money go to waste.
C. Im sure the "games" will start once the Second Life service comes back up.
D. Only be angry at Linden Labs for not finding a way to alleviate problems such as this, and maybe starting to prevent them. Its not their fault that someone is taking advantage of weaknesses in the service, it is only their fault for not strengthening those said parts where they can.

Incorrect.

No build is height-unlimited. No-script is sorta-height-limited, but not entierly.

You can always convert data to something that is tangible. So arguing whether data is tangible or not is really irrelevant.

lol... I simply enjoy using SL for whatever I want at the moment... If that was to go to an inworld library instead of a real one, to read up real quick on, for example, MC Eschers work, I would. Or goto an inworld gallery to view his works or others like his... Or order a REAL pizza if it were available... ;) Just like I use my online bankings website to quickly view and pay bills, transfer funds, etc... I would do that in SL if I could, its all about convenience, "wow" factor, and fun.

You've just stated what I think is one of the main purposes SL is being developed for. Imagine being able to pay bills, do your banking and other business transactions, all the while having fun, from inside SL.

Now if they would just get us out into space before I die and I can visit another world or two, I'd be the happiest human ever! :D

No, on those GAMES you are selling your time and services for providing xxx item/money/etc. On SL you are creating something yourself and selling a virtual item. And I dont claim to know the legalities on what you own and dont own IP rights to on SL, it is different and will continue to evolve as things move on. The same as all other forms of digital distribution have.

The problem is that's what they want. The best you can do is just play it off.

True. Just annoying. we were in the middle of the FFRC Meeting and working on the issue of a land vote which, in essence, means I need to be owed the cost of a land purchase for one week. It isn't only impeding fun in the short term, but impeding fun in the long term.

This brings up a philisophical issue, though: why would someone want to be evil? What is the appeal of that? Or do the griefers see themselves as white hats defending some principal (family values or whatever?)

Yep... :) I wanna go into space and another planet too... And to think we actually have that chance in our lifetimes! :) Anyways, yeah SL is another form of that. It is simply another way to do things if you so choose or find it nice/enjoyable/easier. It wont replace reality anymore than ATMs or online banking replacing banks...

Well, maybe it's fortuitous. I need to build the new website for the SL International Spaceflight Museum anyway. If anyone is interested, bookmark http://SLISpaceflightMuseum.org but excuse our dust as we try to decide just what to do with it.

In the meantime, you can see some of our stuff by going to our temporary office and click the white rotating sign for a landmark notecard, then select the one that says something about "rocket warehouse" (I think -- don't remember for sure, and can't log in to check it -- doh!) Our island at Spaceport Alpha will be opening in a month or so when we get everything ready.

That will be awesome to behold. =D Can't wait to come check it out, Kat.

Tikiman Ricardo, I can make real tangible products from the prim objects created in Second Life. Some have used rapid-prototypers to fab them already. I've already shown I can send it out to be manufactured. This software is increasingly similar to PLM. That's how some people - including me - view it.

Just in case you weren't aware.
