Talk to us, we are nice and don't bite... well, most of the time. ;)
Ok. What deal did Linden Lab offer you ladies to get your own last name?

Also, how long have you been in Second Life, as your join date implies January, while every other bit of news indicates February?

Ingrid,

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree here. While its true that much of the porn industry is abusive to women, so are many other industries. Nation wide, women make 66 cents to the dollar for the same work males do. Should we shun all industries because of this? The porn industry is one of the few where the women earn much more than men. Does that fact absolve the abusive porn makers? Absolutely not. However, Suicide Girls is the polar opposite of these abusive porn types. The women have complete control of how much of theirselves they wish to reveal, in their own homes, and run their own areas of the web site.

Should we all start boycotting all clothing manufacturers since Kathy Lee Gifford's clothing line abuses workers in third world countries? No, we should simply boycott the individual manufacturer, not the industry. Although the thought of everyone running around naked does have some appeal, I just have to think of certain coworkers naked to realize its a bad idea!

WELCOME, SUICIDE GIRLS!

;)

As Beryl pointed out, a bunch of them left the company, I think she included a link in her post where some of the girls cited their reasons for leaving.

Mnislahi, please don't take my opinions of the porn industry as any sort of attack against you. I have no doubt I'd enjoy talking to any of you and I welcome you to SL as I would anyone else.

I knew you'd change your tone when one of them actually showed up. :)

*flashes some tit to get a custom last name and possibly some virtual land.

Very respectful!

Type C: Everyone else who is threatened neither by hot ass nor by their own sexuality. Naughty bits do not terrify these people. They're down with our new goth/punk, sexy neighbors. Or at the least are indifferent.

I'll go with C, with a tinge of jealousy LOL

And Sans said: "Some part of me wishes I was that brave (and young, heh)."

I hear ya, girl!! :D

Ya know, I was going through their site yesterday...at least what I COULD without being a subscriber...and I read a journal entry from one of the girls that just blew me away. I am going through a LOT of stuff all at once in rl right now, and everything she said in that entry was exactly how I have been feeling. It gave me a sense of relief that I am not alone. Don't disredit these girls without giving them a fair shake.

Joined January 31st, hope that makes it a little bit clear for you. :)

Here is a little FYI... any Suicide Girl in the site have "Suicide" as their last name. This has always been like this and will always be. I think it we got our last name because ever since we got invited, no strings attached, it would have been a little weird having "Mnislahi Takashi" in game or tons of other SG's with different last names that does not go with our site.

I really do believe Wilder made it perfectly clear with her post that there was no deal whatsoever. Here, I'll copy and paste it for your viewing.

Suicide Girls in Second Life FAQ

Q. Is there a deal/agreement/contract between Linden Lab and the Suicide Girls?

A. No

Q. Were the Suicide Girls approached by Linden Lab to join Second Life as a part of a program or promotion?

A. No

Q. Were the Suicide Girls given a special offer to check out Second Life?

A. Yes

Q. Do the Suicide Girls owe Linden Lab something in return?

A. No

Q. Why did Linden Lab do this?

A. There is an interest in seeing how existing web communities can extend what they offer members by having a virtual space where they can meet and interact. The Suicide Girls have a very active community and Second Life is a good fit for them to be able to meet and greet each other as well as their site members.

As you can see, its pretty clear. What's not clear, is your search for drama.

Regardless, to quote Bill McNeal, though, "Show me a woman who isn't jealous of another woman... And I'll show you a man."

Somehow I think that needs to be rewritten to "Show me a woman in Second Life...and I'll show you a man"

I pay this company every month. I think most people can vouch for me that I'm no drama queen. I don't think asking a few questions and having some opinions about a rather touchy issue with a lot of people constitutes drama. I wouldn't want to write you off, I would hope you wouldn't want to do the same to me.

Flipper largely took the words right out of my mouth. Rather than sweeping judgements of an entire industry, I think it would be better to look at the specific organizations Linden Lab is promoting. If the exploitation and abuse typical of the porn industry came to Suicide Girls, I think Linden Lab would drop them like a hot potato. But that's just not the case here. Girls leaving Suicide Girls when they become dissatisfied, even on angry terms, sounds like healthy business to me, not oppression. For highlighing and celebrating the erotic, sensual side of Second Life, I don't think Linden Lab could have selected a better organization than the Suicide Girls.

I know some people don't agree with the lifestyles of certain others. There seems to have been a mini clash of ideologies in this thread and I think that's a really healthy thing for a society (yes, I am calling Second Life a society.) I tend to thrive on diversity; I seriously LOVE it! But the cost of diversity is having to share space with cultures and mindsets you don't necessarily agree with. I still love that!

The immediate example that springs to MY mind is Times Square in NYC. During the 70s-80s, Times Square used to be a heaven for crime, vagrants, and every erotic service you could think of. It also used to be a gritty, rich cultural center that gave New York City it's unique flavor. Then entered Giuliani who, during the 90's, transformed Times Square into its current form ... a Mall. We have a Disney Store, a Toys R Us, an Olive Garden, an Applebees, etc. In other words, Times Square has all the attractions you can find in any shopping center in any U.S. town.

Second Life already feels opressively homogenous to me in so many ways. So I welcome the Suicide Girls, and I'm excited about the future of Wilder Linden's work to entice other facets of society to join us here in Second Life.

My complaint is around the word suicide.

I'm sorry, but there is absolutely nothing sexy about suicide. That LL seems to think there is .. well, is simply bizarre and I could even say creepy.

Nonsense. Your assertion was that the only reason these individuals are valuable and worthwhile is that they were comfortable showing flesh.

Well for example, other than Washu (who, sadly, I see very rarely) I can't remember the last time I saw a person of color.

But I am also talking about the RL demographic playing SL. I do indeed love white, middle class, folks in their mid-twenties working in the tech or creative sector. But I think it would be great to see what other segments of the population could bring to SL.

Real Life porn stars playing SL is very exciting!! I would love to see who else Wilder can drag into SL.

I have to admit, this is my only reservation about it as well. It seems a very odd thing to glamorize. Suicide is devastating for all involved, and certainly not something to make light of or sexualize.
