I'm a marketing girl. I know sex sells. Nevertheless, LL's recent marketing experiment of inviting the Suicide Girls to SL to promote their product seems a tad sketchy to me. You can check out their SL group, a long list of real Suicide Girls (of suicidegirls.com) They have their own last names, just as all of the special project groups do, there are Lindens as members of the group. So where is the special project? I realize LL has never touted themselves as being the moral compass of the metaverse, nor are they oblidged to, but as far as integrity goes ... do we really need "SL NEW AND IMPROVED NOW WITH WEB CAM GIRLS" ? Women are constantly being bombarded and pressured to behave and look sexy publicly all the time. I guess we can add LL to the list of companies and coorporations who follow this mantra. On the other hand, perhaps there are details about the group that I'm not aware of. I might have this all wrong, and perhaps The Suicide Girls approached LL first. I hope at the very least this becomes an equal opportunity situation where LL invites some sexy men to join SL. More sexy men that is. Thoughts?

I say bring on the beefcakes! Bring the Chippendales in. Jennyfur always says the only problem with attractive men is they're all attracted to each other! Its funny, the only person I know who has a pass to the SG web site is a lesbian in RL...and she let me borrow it once! Regards, -Flip

Well since they are willing to work people for free in positions that should be paid positions, the moral and ethical bar is pretty low. So does this mean that LL is finally acknowledging the sex industry in SL? Is this why the "Escort worth her type in Gold" thread is still open? What about the children?

SG girls are indie/emo/punk girls, not your usual barbies with fake boobs. Before having my son I had applied and was accepted. (Just quit because it felt wrong to be named on the internet with a kid, but anyways.) Deal is, they are trendy and intelligent people like you and I Ingrid, who have/share great tastes, and therefor, it was only a logical move that they come to SL. *NOT* webcam girls. They have awesome pictures sets, themed in such a ool artsy way, and vrey interested up-to-date blogs. They like online games, art, etc. SL is the best place for creativity so I think it's a win-win partnership. It's not like Carmen Electra was suddenly SL's mascot... Think again From: Ingrid Ingersoll Women are constantly being bombarded and pressured to behave and look sexy publicly all the time. More sexy men that is. Thoughts? SG were never pressured to "look sexy" or "hot. Just a rare bunch of people actually love very hardcore tattoos and pearcings (I am talking serious rockabilly(ETC)stuff here, not a tiny tribal/dolhpin/tweedybird on the ankle or a pin on your nose LOL) THEY ENJOY what they do and just want to show the world NOT ONLY bigass fake boobs, perfect pussies and asses are apealing. So cut the pressure part. About guys.... There ARE guys version of Suicide Girls as well

I think selling a little sex is consistent with Linden Lab's desire to make Second Life a platform upon which many varied activities take place. For me, fashion has been big, as well as SL as a tool for education and Machinima. Other facets including furries, romance, wargames, and money-making activities are heavily promoted. I think sex has long been a blaring omission. Many folks active in the BDSM lifestyle, for example, feel their businesses and lifestyles will never enjoy Linden exposure for fear it would alienate the mainstream. I think the inclusion of Suicide Girls is a very tasteful and cleverly targeted way to highlight the more erotic side of SL. Aimee approves

The perception bouncing off the back of my head lately is that the ultimate goal of Linden Lab is, always has been, to corner the Internet 3D entertainment market. It's all very cleverly couched in layers of "building strong communities" and "facilitating educational efforts." But those lofty ideas have never mapped to what they were actually doing.
Everything, such as the order of feature development and release, seems to fall neatly into place though if what they're doing is building a centralized 3D entertainment system. This'll take some more churning, the original post just resparked the thought after a few days of screaming and chasing down unruly hardware. Gotta get a bigger bat.

From: Ingrid Ingersoll Thoughts? I'll be the first to admit that I'm an advocate of Second Life being the innovation behind Blowup Doll 2.0, but even I'm a bit uncomfortable with the SG "invasion" (that's quoted because of it's intentional sarcastic use). I know sex sells, I know that SG sells because it appeals to the kind of guys (re: self-touted geeks) who populate SL, and maybe it's just because I've never gotten the camwhore scene... But, yeah, I'm with you Ingrid, it does feel odd.

I'm reminded of one of the last scenes from The Pirates of Silicon Valley where Bill Gates (Anthony M. Hall) is talking to Steve Jobs (Noah Wiley), and he says something along the lines of: "You don't have to do it right, you don't have to do it well, you just have to be first, Steve. We were first, Steve! We were first."

But I think if they're going to use women as sex objects to promote their company they should also extend that great priveledge to men as well. Flip can only do so much.

Flip can only do so much. Hrmmmm. Well yes, fair is fair. Sadly, one factor that *IS* kind of true is that sexualized women sell better than sexualized men. Sexualized men will appeal to a certain segment of the female population (I personally would rather see Heath Ledger in his Knight's Tale armor...YUMMY!) but to men they will be an absolute turn off. Sexualized women, on the other hand attract most men, and even a good chunck of women, even if only for aesthetic reasons rather than sexual. Look at women's magazines like Cosmo and you will see a level of female sexualization that you would NEVER see in GQ of men. So I agree with you 100% but there are marketing issues that will always make women a safer bet than men.
