There will be more web communities in the future joining Second Life as we continue to grow and expand and they should be given the chance to make a home just as we all have.

Ah. So we can expect the officially named family of "Awful's" soon, can we?

I can absolutely see why this is a winning situation for LL. Suicide Girls get a LOT of traffic. When they list Second Life in their profiles as an interest, well, that's added visibility for SL. More power to them.

There's also a last name of PMS for a group of female gamers from all sorts of different games. I'd imagine SG is just the most visible of an extremely new experiment, and shouldn't be taken as a harbinger of "zomg SL is marketing to teh sex people now". If anything, its proving that LL made a good marketing move in terms of visibility - what do people talk (or think) about more than sex?

I didn't even notice that there's a PMS last name (though there's only two of them)

So how many other groups have gotten custom last names so far?

Ah... some of them have been educational institutions. For example, MC, or Radiks. :)

Can I be a fucktard too, please, Siggy?

It does beg the question, though... how many is a 'community'? What is the criteria to qualify, as far as LL are concerned? What does it take to get a custom last name for ourselves?

Very probably... but how much?

Why should this be shrouded in secrecy? It's yet another $$$ opportunity for LL that people would be willing to fork over cash for the privilege, but yet again we find out after the fact then get some evasive brush off from the Lindens. I belong to a number of online communities! So how do we get ourselves a community name?

Kris - the Tardation Nation would welcome you with open arms... and yeah i'm dead serious too....

If it doesn't follow 'community standards' how about Pharktard?

And to the topic at hand:

Anything that gets this much reaction on the forums gets the official Siggy 'Two thumbs up - a twist - and a kiss!'

Ok, so after the teen tit brigade evacuates SL, can we all just go back to creating sex balls and tops with the bottom halves of the boobs hanging out and g-strings and BITS, and just get along again? :)

Enabran, are you being serious or are you joking? Because if you're serious, man, the little woman needs to drag you by the.. heels into this decade.

Oh, yeah, because rejecting 50 or more girls because they don't fit your image of acceptability is open minded.

Right.

edit: btw, the missus is loving this thread. I might succeed on selling her on SL for the drama alone. :)

I have nothing against porn or sex in sl. What ever floats your boat.

You know what's sad here?

If I were to, say, post a link to the thread where you attacked a whole ton of people in second life for their participation in this industry you have nothing against, I would probably get yelled at.

I might not be able to teach others history anymore thanks to the rules of the forum, but some of us still remember it.

----

That aside. I guess the only thing that bothers me here is the whole "special deal" that they get as a "Community". I'm part of a ton of communities that have migrated in whole or part to Second Life! Why don't I get any special deals? Why are these people so special? Hell, Furries alone... I'd be willign to bet you that furries have brought a lot more money and publicity to SL than these girls have or will. But is there a special last name from immegrants from Furry Muck? Nope.

I don't really care, mind. I wouldn't use it even if it were availible. I just don't get why certain groups are "special" and others are ignored.

Because a Linden is part of the group.

I had no idea who or what the "suicide girls" were until I looked up their website.

There's enough trash in game as it is already, why on earth did LL recruit this group, a porn site, when there is so much else that really could have benefitted the game much better.

Are they that desperate to increase the 4% of "members" who actually sign in that they have to team up with a porn site to get more people to play? Someone, please, tell me exactly how having this group provides any benefit to SL?

Disappointed Lindens, very disappointed. If this sort of junk is what my monthly membership fee goes towards supporting, maybe I need to take my money somewhere else.

I'm happy with my last name, and I hope the SG girls are happy with their last name.

Welcome to SL !

I'm having a bit of fun with the situation, but I am serious in my intent. I am living in this decade. This whole fear of sex is so 1950's.

Also. Most of the women in this thread reminded me of the movie Malena. :)

SGs have website with traffic. SGs mention SL on website. People who visit SG website are the type of people that might check out SL and, presumably, have computers with which to do so. SL population grows. LL, "yay".

Not a terribly tough concept.

And for those that can't grasp that the SL community is big enough to have subcultures that you don't understand or approve of, I'm sorry.

Although, I just found out that there are webistes for clothing adults in diapers. I'm not paying my internet fee anymore if it supports that sort of thing.

I think some might take issue with your description of it being a porn site. It's true that some of them have nude photosets and stuff, but it's hardly 'a porn site'. They might also take issue with your describing it's members collectively as trash, too, I guess.

I don't know what you find so offensive about them, frankly. I think they should feel quite at home in SL - if maybe a little disappointed - since half the girl avatars in SL are way more 'out there' than your average Suicide Girl. Hell, if they came in their typical SG attire they'd feel positively overdressed here. And it should be a great boost to the goth clothing, jewelry and tattoo industry! ;)

Not difficult to understand, no... however are the sort of people who frequent that website the sort of people we want in SL? There's more than enough of that junk already and it doesn't need encouraging. Maybe LL should try and figure out why the 90,000+ from the existing membership base never log in and fix that before encouraging more people to play.

It seems that as a straight, Christian, non-furry male who has no interest in the sleazy side of life, I am part of a minority subculture rather than one of the majority groups in game. What do you propose I get as special benefits and encouragement to continue to play?

I am at work at the moment so naturally I closed the site pretty quickly when I looked. But if you just take a look at the "What is" page, that is pornographic imagery plain and simple. Sure, pretty tame considering what there is on the net, but still porn. And why are the girls there? To make money by selling their bodies through photosets. Trashy behaviour, end of story.

Let them take issue with my viewpoint if they want. I don't care. They're entitled to, I just don't agree with the site or what they do - or their 'lifestyle' being used to advertise (and lower further the tone of) a game I enjoy.

I sense that you're quite judgmental and intolerent of lifestyles other than your own, arent you? And very quick to condemn a whole community based upon a momentary visit to their website.

How did you ever make it as far as the signup for Second Life?

You claim to be Christian.
Doesn't your holy book say "Judge not, lest ye be judged thyself."
And Lewis, want Jesus friend Mary Magdelne a prostitute, he didnt say she was trashy and lowering the tone of his disciples, did he?
