I really don't care what anyone calls SL.

Does it matter?

Yes. It's the single most important question in life. Second life that is. :p

*HINT* The "Final Boss" is featured on the front page with a yellow background. Beware!! ;)

Although I didnt enjoy the "Neuter a Furry" level or "Gorean Master Says".

*HINT2* $L Cheat Code= up, down, up, up, left, right, X, O, Button 2, Button 1, Down, Left.

*giggles so much she snorts*

The final boss is actually Torley Linden. The key is to just keep dodging until she runs out of watermelons and has to rez more. :p

To a bunch of lads having a kick-about in the street, football is just a game.
To any of the World Cup squad members if is something else.

Same 'thing', different people, different meanings.

I rest my case.

Steve isn't a game, Steve just "is."

STEPHEN isn't a game, STEPHEN just "is."

Any white wolf larp (storytellers and narrators make goals, but the player can have no goals, and the books have no set goals, only ideas).

GURPS - you can use any setting, any world...or just an open ended rpg like SL.

White Wolf LARP - I couldn't see what this was from a cursory inspection, but if the point is to create a story, then it has a goal. You can play Oblivion by just wandering around aimlessly killing bandits, but Oblivion still has goals and it is still a game.

I looked up GURPS, and found a role-playing game in which the player engages in combat - with the goal of beating other players, and/or increases his skill points, which in itself is a goal.

I set my own goals, do you need everything spoonfed to you?

No, I have plenty of goals in second life. But they are set by *me*, not by *the world*. I wonder (a) why you appear to have so much trouble in comprehension and (b) why you are so impolite.

How about calling it a hobby.

I think Second Life is a cheese sandwich.

Second Life needs a definition so that we can more easily explain what it is to those who ask about it.

Second Life is a virtual world. If I were asked what I was doing, I would say, "I am in Second Life" rather than "I am playing Second Life".

Second Life is not an RPG.. People role play in Second Life, but they do that in real life too.

It's been said too many times now to count... Games can exist in Second Life, but it is not itself a game. It acts as a platform for many things gamelike or not. Second Life is an empty expanse of virtual land without the people who develop for it. They set the rules by which their area of this word is defined.

If you were to visit a brand new and totally empty simulator. Is the experience gamelike?

Let us also assume you have no inventory items of any kind. Not even an avatar. There is no ground either and your experience is limited to a fixed camera in an empty space.. Are you playing a game?

Lets say you find a way to create an object and you attach that object in some way to your camera.. Now when you reposition the camera the object stays with you.

You then find a way to generate an object and propel it forward at the click of a mouse. Is it a game yet?

Maybe someone else does the same thing and you realize that there are others around you who are figuring out the same things as you are. You can see them and they can see you thanks to your handy dandy objects you have all attached to yourselves. Through some communication medium you are able to suggest you all use your new found object throwers to play a game of tag. Starting to sound like a game now..

Was it a game before? Is it a game now? I would say the answer to both those questions is "No." The users made the game. The platform just allowed them enough freedom to enable this creation.
