I think everyone who isn't trying to define things for others is the winner here.  I disagreed with you, I tried to carry on rational discourse, I was a fool for trying cause I know such is impossible with you... but I enjoyed parts of it as well so participation had some merit. It's a highly useful game that can be used in a variety of ways, but it's still just a game. Trying to associate all this flowerly language and "high concepts" to this software changes nothing; It's a GAME. And for the record, just because it's a game, does not detract from what it is or the people that play the GAME. Legos and playdoh are NOT games. They are toys. While all games are toys, not all toys are games. SL is not a game. _____________________

This seems like a very easy question to answer but if you take a look at sites like www.slprofiles.com, where people place their profile and talk about their second life being their first life, then maybe it isn't. No doubt Second Life is a game, but I believe it is much more then just a game. After all, how many REAL businesses have been build in Second Life? How many people actually make REAL money in second life? I've only been playing Second Life for a little while but OMG I've never seen more drama in any other game then here. Conclusion? Second IS a game for some but clearly a bit more for others!

Second Life is activly trying to give all the power to each individual user to control their experience. Rules exist where technical limitations, security and legal obligations insist. Other than that Linden Lab leaves things reletivly lax. _____________________

Any online games where you chat with others is a glorified chat room! WoW, TSO, COH..etc. Notice how you Baba and I used the word GAME as well as Baba using the word GAMEplay. If you lock up the sports equipment, turn off the stadium light and set fire to the field... football and baseball are still games. If Linden Lab goes bankrupt and their server farm goes dark... Is SecondLife still a game? To Jonas, SecondLife is a game. But what is SecondLife without Jonas? |

Was going to dodge by saying "WoW: the card game" doesn't depend upon Blizzard being in business, but wanted to make sure. Curious, http://www.worldofwarcraft.com doesn't seem to be responding, and blizzard's store is offline. Regardless, I would still have the 'Deluxe Collector's Edition' game box for WoW, even if Blizzard were gone. But... WoW isn't a game to me anyway. As an "activity engaged in for diversion or amusement" it lacks sufficient amusement and activity to be an engaging diversion. Therefore not a game to me. |

You know I never understood why people have to always "classify" stuff. Why must people either be good or evil, rich or poor, happy or sad, Democrat or Republican? Isn't there a middle ground?
Second life is: A game ? Yes for some An investment ? Yes for some A business ? Yes for some A vacation ? Yes for some Acceptance ? Yes for some An addiction ? Yes for some Drama ? Yes for some Nonsense? Yes for some If you really want classify Second Life just setup a poll and stop this nonsense. Majority wins right? In all we will personally find an opinion of Second Life. Some things just can't really be classified easily. |
