From: Meade Paravane They know about MISC-2727. How could they NOT know?
Getting it on the triage agenda won't do much, IMO. They will just note that it's a policy issue that should either be ignored or closed.
they know about it, but they haven't acknowledged it yet. This way there's an official response to it and if we're there during it then they should be able to tell us who it will be referred to. Strictly speaking Cyn is the honcho for this (afaik) and should be dealing with it. It would be nice if a media outlet would ask Cyn or those higher up for comment on the jira. I know, wishful thinking...

Prototype "Rite of Passage" build
05-26-2009 10:37
A couple weeks ago, I mentioned that I was applying to build an exhibit for SL6B that would explain how to get adult verified. I won't know for about a week whether the application got accepted, but whether it does or not, I intend to make such a build available for folks to use wherever it might help the cause. I have a prototype of it now, rezzed at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Dallows/233/244/34, and would really like folks to walk through it and see what they think. Right now the only language it knows is English, but it's intended to be easy to "load" it with the several official languages that the viewer comes in. I'd really like to get feedback on what's here before burdening folks with the task of translating anything. I'm hoping it's not too much of an imposition that people must allow viewer media in order to see much of anything. (That's part of the trick for making the languages readily interchangeable.) One bit of missing data: I can't seem to figure out how to associate payment with XstreetSL. My regular account already has it, as does one of my older alts, so I tried with a newer one and it says I can't do it. I'm probably just totally missing how it's supposed to work... could anybody loan me a clue?

looks like LL are being generous.. of course we don't talk about the script limits that are coming in and will most likely cripple these sims even more.. of course it gives mainlanders somewhere else to hide if they don't want to move to ursula https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/land/blog/2009/05/26/good-news-homestead-pricing-to-be-grandfathered-if-purchased-before-july-1st-2009

Have I missed something? I have ploughed through the transcripts and office hours but the person below says that LL will not accept PIOF anymore as verification in this thread post number 28 /327/6a/322504/1.htmlFrom: someone They said it more than once. The Lindens, that is. I distinctly remember Blondin Linden saying that it must not only be on file but IN USE.
Also - again - technically it is not the same as age verification where land permissions are concerned. They have said that also when pressed.
I'm sorry I'm too disinclined to go chasing links for other people. I hate when people insist on a link. If you want to do it, go nuts. anyone point me to where this has been said because I cannot find it and if it has been said it needs updating in the various literature out there. Or join me on the thread

Or join me on the thread Here: From: Blondin Linden 5. How will having payment info on file will work as age verification. When we did the age-verification stuff a couple years ago, LL make it very clear that credit cards could not be used for age verification and some card companies (visa.com) still say this on their websites.
We are not merely collecting credit card numbers as a means of verifying age. We are requiring that accounts be in some way "verified" as a proxy for us to feel comfortable that Residents are appropriate for Adult access. This might be, for instance, an actual payment record (not merely presentation of a credit card), or it might be, alternatively, "age verified" status by our age verification vendor. /352/11/314444/1.htmlBut, after I asked 3 times for clarification in this point, he assured that PIOF is enough.

With respect to Blondin I was going on the latest info from Cyn at the last BB meeting as she was very clear that PIOF was enough for account verification and Cyn is the Linden in overall charge of this on the front lines. Common sense dictated to me that LL could not and would not insist on people using their payment info and spending in world for it to be counted as that would result in the loss of a lot of customers imho Thank you for posting that link and quote though

Official SL Cane
05-27-2009 02:43
I've made the first Official walking cane of SL...it is white with a red tip....The blind leading the blind. ( if anyone wants a copy to carry to any Linden meetings ...drop me an IM and I'll pass you a copy) In all my years I have never seen such idiotic business practices as SL and LL are making.
In these hard economic times...they want to raise prices?...unbelievable. HEY SL and LL.....this place is NOT a neccessity...HELLO!
I'm sure many are rethinking SL as a playground as I am, with all our rights being trampled on and taking away our land for something else that probably wont come close to what we own now and you want to raise prices?
What happened to all the millions of people you want to attract to SL?.....do you think by raising prices ...btw that are already inflated too much, that they will beat down your doors to LEASE land from you?......even though you have key words telling us to BUY our land and OUR world OUR imagination...it is all one big scam.
I believe after you get this runaway train started you will be in for one big surprise and your company will most likely lose quite a lot of money and you will only have yourselves and your greed to blame!
1. YOU have to give anyone that bought mature mainland the opportunity for the land swap 2. Corporations and Educators WILL not come to SL as you think...where will they get the money......wake up...I see college grads taking jobs at Macdonalds! 3. AND explain to us where will all the millions that you think will buy up the mainland will come from?.....when most of them have lost their jobs or will soon.
You people are living in your own fantasy world.....btw...don't choke on that steak we bought for you tonight .....and enjoy it...may not be many more after the next few months

From: Brenda Connolly I can't find anything to support that poster either. In one of the earlier threads the question came up of PIOF vs PIU status .... Blondin said they were equivalent for verification purposes. Like with AO, they go and choose the most confusing wording possible.

a couple of interesting links that gave me food for thought.. http://thinkbalm.com/2009/05/26/thinkbalm-publishes-business-value-study/As someone who is on both sides of this (SL and high level business) I do have problems with believing this is anything but novelty.. but then I don't see any real value in agile methodologies despite them becoming the flavour of the last few years.. http://thinkbalm.com/2009/01/23/ibm-lotus-approach-to-immersive-internet-partnering-and-professional-services/#comment-137open grid is looking better and better suddenly.. and i can't find the link for the one about educational institutions flocking to second life in the last few months (just in time for the summer break.. it smacked a bit of flannel to me). I think that LLs push for this is more to do with status and reputation rather than direct cash from these people. I don't know though and I'm seriously beginning to doubt they do either.

From: Argent Stonecutter It's called an "epiphany". my epiphany was when Blondin said they were doing the content separation because they wanted to rather than because of the outside pressures that were beginning to mass around them. Usually corporations have the strategic vision which those on the ground are not all that good at working to because they never have it properly explained and those at the higher levels tasked with implementing it don't bother. What is striking me about all of this is the lack of strategic vision. I'm seeing ideas but nothing joined up - even at the highest level. Amateur is as amateur does I suppose. They are so completely dysfunctional that they can't even get a few of the basics consistent. It's all good fun though and they do give me lots of examples of how not to do things that I use when I go onto client sites.

Is there a difference between openlife, opensim and opengrid? I see all three terms a lot.

http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2009/05/leaving-second-life.htmlinteresting stuff.. we're getting towards the tipping point I hope.. 6-12m at this rate and it should be viable - assuming they get the ip/portal/ecommerce thing happening properly. I'm almost cheery after reading this, but I could just be clutching at straws.. lol

Let's get a group of builders and scripters together, covering all the basics from avatar appearance to accessories to buildings to fantasy, and move EN MASSE to OpenLife. If we work together, we could really explode the creativity. After a few weeks of work, we could invite all our friends to come. If they like what we've done, they'll tell their friends...and so on and so on.

Korena starbrook posted this on my thread over at Xstreet. I'm still giggling. From: someone
The Homestead deal follows the LL blueprint to a T.
When I saw the announcement I literally burst out laughing.
I would look for some SMALL consession with the adult content policy to show us all how much they listen and care.
It's like a reach around when you really didn't want them back there in the first place
*snortgiggle*

From: Couldbe Yue As someone who is on both sides of this (SL and high level business) I do have problems with believing this is anything but novelty.. but then I don't see any real value in agile methodologies despite them becoming the flavour of the last few years..
this is essentially the DOS 2.0 days. We are still early in the development cycle for what can be done and what it will take to get there. I too am in both universes, like you are. And I see great potential for the idea if a few problems get ironed out, and if LL gets some competent people to code and to run the system. But today, there is nothing SL cannot do for business that I cannot do with a half dozen programs that a) will actually work on corporate hardware, b) cost much less, and c) are not subject to the whims of LL's management as to what agreements they will break this month. So in the near term, they can kiss all but my playtime money goodbye because I cannot possibly trust any company that would sell me one item, then substitute another lesser item with no refund or negotiation. That's fraud, plain and simple. And I won't do any serious business with anyone who defrauds customers no matter how big or little the customer may be. However, after I got over my anger at the latest incompetence, a thought occurred to me. This is an opportunity in disguise. A couple of money people, some patience, and when M destroys SL, I waltz in and buy it all for a quarter on the dollar. Then I fire M and everyone he's put in executive positions, hire a number of out of work programmers around the country who can work cheaper because they aren't in Cal., and begin fixing all the damage they've done. I even have a roadmap of how to make SL both a playground AND a teleconferencing tool superior to any other, making SL 2.0 a household word without pissing off the remaining customers who built SL1... I can make a fortune when M's jihad wrecks SL. And so, I wait...

just to show how stupid the whole idea of filtering is A headline could read " NUT SCREWS WASHERS AND BOLTS" this could be an article about your local hardware store....... OR A headline for a story about a lunatic who raids a launderette and rapes the customers then runs away If we are to be age verified and coralled into an adult ghetto then at least give us the common decency of treating us like adults and letting us click a tab that says adult content so it wont show on PG searches. Any form of control is only a red rag to a bull for those who wish to circumvent the control.

I can make a fortune when M's jihad wrecks SL. And so, I wait... you'd be better off a with a rewrite of the architecture. LL should have done that over 2 years ago when it first began to seriously creak. A few programmers adding yet more bandaids and improving the quality by actually putting a few comments in the code are not going to help this in the long run. As for the rest, it's interesting. I would never recommend the grid to any organisation that has a requirement for data confidentiality, simply because LL has a copy of all text and objects brought in and let's not talk about stability lol. What I love most about this is every time they've gone for a brownbag where they've used voice they keep crashing.. and they never seem to be embarassed about it. Which any business professional should be since stability and reliability are a key requirements. If novelty is the requirement though (and sometimes that's good for shaking mindsets) I'd have a behind the firewall open sim. I'm certainly interested in hearing about making this a better teleconferencing tool because atm its real appeal is providing a bit more flesh to business relationships that have never had the chance to do face to face. As for educators that seem to be expressing a preference for the main grid because it brings diversity, well I'd have to ask what subjects they're flogging and if they need to see diversity that badly they can come in as daytrippers.. Facebooky entertainment platform is one thing, but as a serious business tool it leaves a lot to be desired and the current design really doesn't appear to offer much hope of overcoming that.

Sometimes you have to make the leap

From: Thorn Witrial I commented on that blog.
My offer still stands folks. If we work together, we could really explode the creativity. After a few weeks of work, we could invite all our friends to come. If they like what we've done, they'll tell their friends...and so on and so on. I've been exploring OL. It has the "feel" of something that could grow into a pretty accommodating environment. I know it's not SL (thank you very much for reminding me of that-meaning I don't need a re-reminder) It also isn't under the yoke of corporate repression and the possibility of continual revisions-without communication of those changes. Basically I mean to say that if a landlord starts telling me changes are coming and I will have to move to suit the landlord I then know I have a choice to continue to support said landlord with my time and money or I can start looking for a better environment and more reasonable people with which to deal. (I'm not a landowner but I have purchased content in SL) **BTW I don't like posting all this here where the Lindens can read it and yank my account without any reason but all this COMPLETELY LACKING IN SENSE change has evoked my anger. As an aside anyone who thinks that under-age users aren't resourceful enough to outwit the various age verifications systems are not thinking well at all-there will always be more adults having problems with verification than kids who are stumped by it-thinking or stating otherwise doesn't change that! I'm including here a few excerpted remarks from a builder and landowner I chatted with in Freeport, OL: "[17:26] Alicia Sautereau: land is pretty cheap and nothing compared to the costs of sl [17:26] Alicia Sautereau: your allowed to do almost anything with an island" I asked for and received permission to share the above comments. Bye!

From: Couldbe Yue you'd be better off a with a rewrite of the architecture. The immediate task will be to get to V1.5, that is, give the current customers working viewers and a fun experience once again. Keep teh present world working while establishing the new direction - one where different grids of the same tech serve very different objectives. V1.6 will be the beginning of multithreaded viewers (IO, Disk and cache, Sim Modeling, Rendering) to take advantage of dual and quad core computers. If this isn't done quickly, SL will be immediately irrelevant. Fortunately a loosely connected 4 thread architecture isn't difficult. V1.7 will incorporate TinyHovel into the sims. You enter a doorway, and the textures and prim placement data come from your home computer to create a 32x32x32 room that users can modify offline. The sim only acts as a relay for the data on your own folder - your hovel design is on your own computer. At the same time, Teen Grid will get access to certain approved vendors so that they can purchase more gear, and the Crossroads continent will permit adults (sans inventory) and teens to have a meeting area for play and for education. V1.8 will add encryption to the TinyHovel by creating a Business Grid, and permit anyone in the same tiny to see and access all the files present in the Shared folder of the computer within that room. Unless you have the key provided by the owner of the TinyHovel, you cannot access the data and cannot make sense of it even if you do. This is a P2P system with SL acting as a locator, but on a seperate grid from the main grid. V1.9 will take the TinyHovel idea, but eliminate the tiny and make an entire sim into a group of shared directories that originate from individual computers. It will also allow VOIP telephone access, permitting a user to forward their business phone to their home computer when logged in. V2.0 will change the architecture to get past the 60 person per sim limitation by having seperate servers for land and for avatars. Each avatar server will be able to handle 150 people at a time at the least, and nothing prevents 10,000 avatars from being in the same sim at the same time. This will be the most challenging revision since the avatar server will have to know the physics model of all the sims the avatars are in at all times.
