+1 to the request that people stop deleting their posts!

If what you said was so unimportant, please don't waste anyone's time posting it in the first place.

Well, if you walk down the streets of Los Angeles, fake driver's license and fake social security cardss are sold openly in the streets to the illegal immigrants to find work. The only good news is that when they use your stolen identity to work, they pay into your retirement system, and you actually get free social security benefit from them :)

Stolen ID is not just used to get legal employment in the US, but also used to get hospital care. Just read on:
http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2009/04/08/illegal-immigrant-used-stolen-identity-to-get-hospital-care/

There is an estimate of 12 million illegal immigrants in the US. I'm sure there is probably an equivalent number of illegal immigrants in Europe too.

Do you not see how big the black market is for cloning your ID? Why do they not use fictional name and ID number for their fake ID? Because it evades detection from law enforcement, such as when they are stopped in a traffic stop and check their driver's license, their identity is valid on the computer database, as a real person with valid info, so no one ever suspect them if the ID is a fictitious person.

If you think identity cloning is not big business in the black market, just think of the criminals who clone your passport to smuggle people into your country under your name!

Thank god i don't live in the USA then :) Europe has its fair share of illegals but i haven't seen the stories you quote tho it probably goes on here to some degree. I am pleased our Data protection laws are more stringent than with the USA, thats why it is suggested not to give our details to other countries as they are not so safe as here.

I wonder what the actual odds are for having ones identity stolen though in the grand scheme of things?

Back to the topic in hand :)

some people like the attention it gets them though.

Saw the same thing over on XSL a few weeks back too.. not the same person (I assume) but the same reaction from frustrated thread followers. Best thing to do is ignore it.

I have a sickly gut feeling that when its announced that ursula is open that SL will let the land mongers in at the same time BEFORE all the people required to move have done so.

Say it isn't so Blondin.

This would not be profitable. They would only have to create more land for the adult content they intend to move, and while masses of it were available and the policy unclear, the land would not have great value. Not to mention enforcement ... am I the only one that thinks The Lab will never be able to enforce these policies they are making?

But, move the adult content first and let the continent thrive a little, and then let the land mongers in ... now thats the ticket. A limited amount of land, in desirable spot ... thats profitable.

Then, you raise land use fees on the whole adult continent.

Then, about six months later you suddenly "discover" how unfair it is to charge more to those with adult content, so you raise the land use fees of Mature and PG land to match.

All speculation of course ... but long ago it became pretty obvious to anyone that wanted to see it, that The Lab was imposing this where they thought they could get away with it. My guess is that a high percentage of what will end up being adult content will be a) those using it to feed their wallet, b) those using it to feed their need.

The wallet feeders will gripe a lot, but end up finding a way to continue feeding ... or, they were not eating much, in which case The Lab has a no loss situation. The need feeders ... well that itch keeps coming, now doesn't it. ;-)

The "Lab" as you call it is losing money each week if you research the facts, you are becoming increasingly crass in your posts.

I so agree there, it just makes me wonder if that person realizes maybe they didn't really have anything to say after all and that is why they delete the stuff, i tend to ignore those sort of people to just a shame they mess it up for others who are trying to follow conversations etc.

This was said at the meeting that the land bots wouldn't be let in for a while, i can't remember the exact words but that was said.

Must be hitting a nerve.

If I can't legally get this content on my OpenSim, and I can't, then why should I care about the distributed model?

I mean, look at Mac OS versus Linux. Macs cost at least 40% more than generic PCs with equivalent capabilities, and OS X is less efficient than Linux to boot, and yet in less than 8 years OS X has several times the market share of Linux. Why? Because you can get applications for it, they don't suck, and they don't require a geek to install. And, no, the distributed repository approach that Linux uses for software distribution is NOT an exception to this.

I was using open source operating systems before some of the people reading this were old enough to use computers. I was using the ancestors of this OS before most of you were alive.

You need more than just an open source OS. Maybe someone will take OpenSim in a direction that recreates a fraction of the ecosystem that SL supports, like Apple did with FreeBSD, but until then the "application barrier to entry" for OpenSim based virtual worlds is heavy. And so far the only people who have even been talking the talk have been imposing MORE restrictions on users than Linden Labs does, not fewer.
I met my wife online in the early '80s on an online bulletin board and by the middle of the '80s I was running my own text-based dial-up virtual world, so I know all that. If people cared about whether the system was distributed or not, or open or not, Usenet and Fidonet would have killed Compuserve before most people had switched from DOS to Windows. It didn't: what killed Compuserve and AOL and Delphi was *better content* on the Internet. Don't tell me how users will control their own content, tell me how you're going to get *better content* in OpenSim. You're not going to do it by open sourcing everything... otherwise we'd all be running Linux or BSD and Bill Gates would be making a living asking "you want fries with that".

Better content on the Internet came about because it was a better and more profitable distribution mechanism than anything else. Until something replaces that aspect of SL I don't think they're going to need to care.

It's already here. Better content, better experience, better everything. You seem to be extremely invested in SL as a platform. To the point that you automatically reject any other alternative as unworkable now or in the future. SL is headed to Active World status. They were once the top dog as well. But times and things change. And anything created in SL can be duplicated in an opensource world. Embrace Change. It's coming.

A RL business use for SL
04-17-2009 13:11
I have come up with a RL business I'd use in SL

Papa John's pizza

You go to the REAL PIZZA side of the store, enter your phone number, and through all the steps and processes make a real pizza order that gets sent to them to be delivered to your home.

While you are waiting, you go to the FAUX PIZZA side of the store, and make a fake pizza with bizarre ingrediants like Unicorn horn, tentacle, block hole sausage, alien plants, and more. Make the most wild pizza you can imagine (each ingredient is a transparent disc). When you are finished, you get the disgusting thing delivered to your inventory so you can surprise (revolt) your friends.

Oh, is that the door already? where's my wallet?

Credit Cards and PayPal
04-17-2009 13:11
When you hear: "Please use your credit card to verify yourself" most people (including myself) just run away from the website or whatever service there is, because I do not feel need to provide my credit card for such purpose. I used credit card on SL to validate my account only because it had nothing to do with adult stuff. I probably would never use credit card to validate my account under new policy as a noob in SL because it won't look safe and to be honest who trusts LL? Not even old residents... So in fact we will have a lot of people who will not use credit cards and this way will never become verified. I'm not even talking about people who don't have credit card.

PayPal? It is not allowed to use paypal for any transactions which involve adult stuff, nor it is not allowed to use paypal to verify your status at adult websites or other services (I'm not even sure if it is allowed to use paypal to verify your account at all. Paypal is about money transfer not verification. In other words we are talking here about massive problems with Paypal and a lot of customers are going to be banned from paypal because of those Einsteins from Linden Labs.

SL is hard to use for noob. Any noob cant even understand the basis of SL in a first week, You need at leaast one , two weeks to get what is going on here (understand all the options and menus etc), now LL is talking about some access options, estate - region, phase two, age verified, phase three, IF only verified, then use stream five, unless your birthday is an even number, then policy #3324 applies..... what kind of crap is this. Most of the people will dont even know what they are talking about, only advanced users , sim and estate owners know because we have way to check this on menu and play with it. typical user has no idea and don't understand it. if something he/she cannot access, they wont spend two days trying to figure out how to get there.

This whole project is a total failure. They must be kidding if they believe it will be possible to implement at least 30% of this stuff. I already lost the track of what they plan to do. I have completely no idea what they are talking about anymore.

If you really hate creative people who like to involve in adult content, just create completely different SL client just for us. The person will have a choice to download adult version or PG version before they begin their SL experience. After 3 months publish the web stats and we will see how many customers decided to download PG version.

And whatever you do, stop that credit card and paypal scam because you are putting almost all SL customers in danger of having Paypal account blocked. Paypal cannot be used as age verification service. And since they are unable to check who used paypal for what purpose in SL, they will just block accounts for everyone. Then what else will left? "Please scan your ID and fax it to LL" ? LOL

Here is the only way to solve current issues: (totally fair for everyone)
The pop up window informing about adult material and two choices - yes I want to enter - (remember my answer) - no I dont want to enter (remember my answer). When checking boxes 'remember my answer' , the user will never be asked again.

This is the solution used by EVERYONE over the Internet. And again, I never use my credit card to verify anything because my credit card is not my ID and I don't care if some companies think that it might be a good way to use as ID. I used my credit card in SL to buy some services and this way I became verified, but it wasn't because I wanted to be verified but because I wanted those services and majority of the people do the same.

But of course you will not listen, and your intention from the beginning was not to gather feedback from the residents but rather see their reactions. Anyone on this forum should look carefully and see if any of the propositions from the residents (some of them brilliant as I read them) were implemented? Absolutely not, nothing. And this is how it will remain to the end.

The Lab losing money supports my position, actually. They got a taste of how profitable land sales are, and have become hungry once again. Can't just make more land though ... there is a massive amount of land for sale as it is right now. So ... they need a "reason" for more land to be out there.

Not sure how pointing out the obvious is crass. People making a profit selling adult material, will continue to do so under the new dynamic. Those that were not making money ... The Lab cares very little about them. Those that use Second Life to experience something that excites them (and there is not a single thing wrong with that) will either do so, or not.

So, if it's crass to point out the obvious, well then I'm crass, and will just take your word for it. Perhaps I'm not "mature" and/or "adult" enough to define a person's character based on a few words on a message board. ;-)

UGH. That's the one thing I don't want to see in SL. All those RL companies all over the mainland, trying to sell me their junk. I can do that online already, I come to SL to get away from that.

If it's gonna come, at least let them do it right. Have a RL service and a SL service, real and whimsical. If I can blow 30 minutes in the store making gold necklace pizzas while waiting for my pie, it's fun and worthwhile. If it's just a place to enter my order through SL, I'll just go to their website instead.

If you can extend this Real/Second Life dual use approach to all your incoming businesses, LL, then you may succeed. I may not be all that interested in HRBlocks Tax Preparation sim most of the year. But if they have a fantasy "Where does the money go - alien research, potato grooming, paying off intergalactic mobsters" type of fun activities as well as real activities, I'm more apt to visit the sim. And more apt to use their RL business when the time comes.

Ordering a pizza from SL should be childs play - an email to the proper address with the data properly formatted should be all it takes.

Not only money. The bureaucracy there is also losing respect, trust, dignity, legitimation, substance, professionalism, sense for values beside money, the enthusiasm of the customers, the customers itself, attractivity, modernity, fantasy, humor, ideals, literally all. LL is in the middle of a process to deconstruct SL and itself.

And: "Your World. Your Imagination" is a lie.

The thrill is gone.

This thing falls back to what it literally is: boring monotone circling carbon dusty hard drives wich recording some boring magnetic embossed boredom since we are forced to create only boredom.

Boring grey people on top of the boring management, sitting on boring cheap servers, some brown bags in their old wrinkled fear shaking hands, creating boring rules and losing bored customers.

The yawn-factor came in, since that cornless white bread is CEO and since he fired the last enthusiasts in exchange for a gang of boring buddies and boring third partys.

A 3 months old untoasted mildewed toast slice is more interesting, because it changes its texture day by day a bit, by different green and white freckles. And it is cost free to watch it molding.
