Hello all! I have been away for a little while and see that I last posted on page 12. It is now page 36. Here is my Resident Question, if I may submit one: has anything occurred apart from adfarmers trying to justify themselves - in other words, is it actually worth my time reading fourteen pages?

Heya Ordinal .... 'religious' complainers, ad farmer alts, people thinking the Lindens will license *anyone* after Oct 1, and so on. Quite entertaining actually if you have a few hours to kill.

I do notice a post by DMCA-abusing criminal Cytherea Eagle! Oh, very good!

I would hope that Jack is going keep zoning only on new sims and not zone the existing mainland, like he said in his Aug. 5 post.

Actually, many of us would like to see it everywhere. It was lack of it that got us into this mess in the first place.

I just want to emphasise that this policy thing must be only about the means that people use to promote whatever their message is. It must not have anything to do with the contents of the message. If the message is allowed to make a difference, then that really will be discrimination, and enforcement will become impossible. One man's pornography is another mans art; one mans religion is another man's mumbo-jumbo. It will always be so. (Women's too?).

We should be united in a common goal to help the Lindens stop some of the inconsiderate behavior that is carrying on in world.

I totally agree, pls tell Mark :)

Interesting that there are now two people who have reverted to culture/ religion as a reason they feel unfairly treated.

From: Cytherea Eagle

Like you I am also a bit upset about such things. Like residence using our Native cultural items, dress and cerimony for bdsm and gor. Wonder what would happen if someone made a christian bdsm shop that used half naked avies in lude positions to display and sell all types of christian garb for use in bdsm and or gor.

From: MarkEdward Harvey
I have been posting Christian messages on billboards in SL for over 2 years.I have invested thousands of hours and thousands of dollars without any financial return. I feel this issue will be a perfect test legal case in RL for discrimination and would welcome contact from folks interesting in joining a law suit against SL, which I want to make it abundantly clear I will pursue if I suffer any form of financial loss or extortion or discrimination.

Weird how people find god when their wallets are at risk.

To emotionaly cash in I decided to build a mosque so I could be offended by the porno ads around it on behalf of islam.

I really worry about these types who deliberately position themselves for little martyrdoms. :/

I would like to see the opportunity to opt in or out of zoning, for a sim based on sqm owned.

To clarify this I mean if a number of avatars own more than half the sim between them and wish it to become residential only then that is what happens.

Not based on number of plots held where a 20 or 30 16sqm plots held and 10 useable plots but the number of owners makes the sim become commercial due to votes from small plot owners as this would open up further cases of abuse.

Not so much. I just skim, myself.

Um, twenty-four pages, sorry for my poor arithmetic.

My other question - rather tricky to answer I am aware - is: at what post did Jack Linden stop reading this thread?

Oh, several pages back.

I find Ms Eagle's post particularly comical, as - and I will never tire of repeating this - she filed a fraudulent DMCA takedown request on a set of images of her previous ad-griefing network that I posted on the popular Flickr system, of which I was not informed by Yahoo, who own the thing. I did not of course really need to file a counter-notification as, just as I was about to, her business was banned, for the first time in any case, thus I really did not feel the need

This comparison is hardly fair as one mentions he has never sold any of his plots and may genuinely be doing something he feels is good and just.

Where as the other is known to be in it for purposes of greed alone, using culture as a shield.

Many of us would like to keep our land unzoned. For those who want zoned land let them buy it in the new sims like Jack originaly said. Yes, get rid of the ad farms but don't zone or theme existing sims. Afterall we bought this uncovented. Some people do want to live in zoned areas but other people do not want that. Therefore keep the zoning in the new sims only.

THANK YOU!!! And some suggestions...
09-06-2008 15:53
This is a HUGE step in the right direction, and I look forward to seeing the mainland become a more pleasant place to be. I think Jack's post also acknowledged that this is a step to address the most urgent issue, not the entire solution to mainland improvement, which I appreciate and see as an indication that this kind of change will continue. The underlying problem of extortionist land practices will not completely go away with this new policy, as others have pointed out, and will need to be addressed once this new policy is in place and we see how things play out. (Unfortunately, I can see ad farms simply morphing into images that would avoid being classified as “advertising” and still have all of the problems of current ad farms in terms of blocking views, inappropriate ban lines, and extortionist pricing to try to force folks to “buy back their view.”)

Be that as it may, here are my suggestions on what to include in the network advertising license agreement (these should be very specific and clear so that they will be easier to enforce):

No particle emissions, no neon glow, no movement, no sound, no automatic giving of anything, attached to the ground only, no higher than 20 meters, no wider than 10 meters (or vice versa as an option), no megaprims, no ban lines, placement along LL roads only, 100 meters between each ad along the roadside.

Why so strict? Because there are alternatives to the open air “ad farm” style of advertising for legitimate advertisers to use that are much more palatable to potential customers – after all, most people expect ads in more commercial venues (shops, malls, clubs). And why would a legitimate advertiser even want to put out open air ads that irritate people – not a great way to sell your product/service, pissing people off!

A final note: I hope that after Oct. 1, AR’s on any remaining ad farms will actually be acted upon and the ads removed by LL as quickly as possible. Also, I hope we are allowed to block any ads (LL licensed or not) when they are an unwanted sight from already owned land.

Yes I don't like Adfarms but I bought uncovenanted land, which allows me to build what I want when I want, if I want a shop or two I expect to be able to build them.
If I want to have a few houses the same goes.

If I want zoned land then I will buy it Thankyou

Instead of wasting time worrying about the way the land looks, and licensing adfarmers yeah they are ugly and annoying, but not as annoying as when your system is screwing up every 30 seconds. Fix the platform then worry about everything else

This is far too lax. I suggest everyone try putting two 10x10 panels blocks covered with garish colours atop each other overhanging your favourite home/beach, whatever. Then see if you think it's unobtrusive!

Remember, 20m is 25% more than the width of a typical 512 homestead plot.

As long as you don't want to build huge irritating ads I am sure that you and your neighbours will get along swimmingly!

Sorry but if the land looks like a bag of excuse the term S**T whats the point in logging in anyway and if you crash every 30 seconds then its a problem your end as I certainly don't.

ad farms
09-06-2008 16:05
Jack, thank you for your decisions on this matter/ We are trying to make a beautiful public gardens, danceing, and rentals. we have several parcels like this that have nothing on them at all, or maybe a plant or two. when you contact the person about purchasing their little piece of land, they want an enormous price for it such as 10,000 L's. alll it is is a way to scam large amounts of money out of honerable people. We have one that is on approximatly a 512. they have a house floor with two walls on it raised aproximatly 60 meters off the surface, with two signs stating we have moved, click to get our new LM. It habeen this way for months. When we contact the owner about buying it, they will not even reply. at the time, wen you went to the new LM, it sent you to nowhere. they then linked it and said they would sell the land, but they needed to leave it there for some time yet, so people would know how to find them. This has been months..... Then there is a 16 meter on out land that the last log-ins on all his groups is unknown. and no one can make contact. Again thanks so much for making decision to get gid of this type of scams.

I could not agree more.

However, policing for unsightly ads or equivalent as well as extortion is required over the entire mainland, zoned or not.

8m wide by 8m high is the maximum that should be permitted for the whole board and i should say the advert texture itself should be no larger than 6m x 7.5m.

We have had these thoughtless fools junking up the place for far to long.

An advert should be ground based only.

Mark, http://www.voiceofthemartyrs.com if you are curious what real christian persecution is.

As for a solution, I don't believe there is one because certain people believe they have a right to do certain things.
So my suggestions (in addition to the very good ones proposed) are A: to permanently Mac address ban aforementioned known microplot extortionists and network admeisters.
B: set all plots under 256m2 to current going land sale rate. (I believe that is L$7 per m2) and prevent the sale price from being raised above this.
C: No ban lines period on below 256m2
D: drop prim resource on 16 to 1 32 to 2 64 3 (this shouldn't cripple the important mall stalls)
E: autoreturn all items on sale plots under 128 and disable scripting
F: set a max number a person can own of under 256m2 plots without signed affidavit.
G. any land under 128 that is bounded by a landowner on 3 sizes or more has the option of obtaining the land without cost. If the current owner refuses to sell then the owner of the larger land can demand that build be turned off to the land and auto return placed on the land.
Personally I think 16s should be limited to linden plants or a non intrusive vending machine.
H: two microplots of the same size can't not remain beside each other for longer than 30 RL days.
I: a person that has been ARed for harrassment or intolerance and hasn't been banned can't slice up land.

I think the licensing shouldn't be virtual at all. I think it should require you to cough up your real world name, address and means of payment.
It must be notarized.(or the EU equivalent).
You should get only one.
Businesses must give IRS tax number or VAT number.
It can cover a max of 5 regions and a max total of 512m2 with no more than 5 subdivisions.
It can be renewable provided you haven't be ARed in the last year for ANYTHING.
If you are ARed for something outside of harassment or intolerance, you can keep it if you provide a defense that the AR was Malicious (onus on you to do this).
Ad can only be a unique texture that does NOTHING. (no glow, no illumination at night, speak, spew, or move).
The texture can't use alpha channels until the Open GL bug is fixed. Since this isn't an SL problem it could be years.
It must attached to the surface of the sim.
It can't be a megaprim.
It must look like a real world sign.
It can give a landmark, notecard or product if touched.
It can't advertise banned items, or adult products in PG locations.
In adult areas it can't be to outrageous. (IE RL hardcore sex to advertise a sex sim).

Finally, I have no issue with religion. I would you love it if a Hindu put up statues of Krishna all around (and especially in your front yard) with quotes from the Mahābhārata because I could put a statue of Buddy Jesus next to it and call it an exhibit. But seriously, A "Let's met at my house on Sunday, God" sign in a random location or even across the way doesn't bother me anymore than a Islamic mineret calling to prayer 5 times a day would.

Oh and Christian BDSM is no more real than Islamic bacon is.

So why do you have it in for small plots? Because of microplots all over the place where I live, I have several <256 plots that add their prim allotments. So you want to punish me by taking away some of my prims because ads made it so the plots were unable to be joined?
