Those in the middle tend to flounder one way or the other. The people on the far ends tend to stay there.
I don't think the OP was talking specifically about troilism, Smithy!

Pep (But I find your comments here most amusing. ;) )

I just thought I would pop in again to say that I am killing myself laughing at everything being posted here . . .

Don't kill yourself laughing, Pep. Although that might make for an interesting obituary

A few practical suggestions ...

As others have said, develop some interests that don't involve you in situations where sex would be a natural progression ... building, scripting, discussion groups ...

Be prepared to pare down your friends list a bit and find new places to go.

Try a different avatar for a while. Nobody has ever come on to me when I have dressed as a robot ;)

I can't work out how troilism fits into my continuum... Oh yeah, it's hiding behind the one far end with its hand in its pants.

Good idea, spinster!

You could also try wearing this:

(Although that may not deter some.)

If the cap fits, wear it . . . :p

Pep (Why are you trying to be logical? Just give in to your emotions. )
The few times I have given in to emotions here, I have gotten in trouble. Logic is easier to control.

Ah, but see that is the point. There is more to emotional involvement than sex.
But very little good sex without the emotional involvement.

Not to be contrary, but I've had good sex without emotional involvement, but very little bad sex with emotional involvement.

Yeah, but you are a guy.
;)

The vast majority of women still define an emotional involvement as being crucial to good sex, though the intensity and level of the emotional involvement can vary. But, totally random sex with a complete stranger is seldom very fulfilling to most women.

Yes, there was a lot of generalization in all of that, but also a high percentage of truth.

No, I've seen those "different" robot av's LOL. They're great, but would, I suspect, be unsuitable for the OP's needs. I deliberately chose mine because it lacks sockets :p

Thanks for the serious answers.

The trolling turned out to be interesting too.

One thing I got so far: Pep wanted 3Ring. She told him he wasn't interested, but then he saw she was interested in someone else. So he's angry and came here to vent.

I dunno, I've had some brilliant one-night-stands in my time. It's a different thing though. If it's somebody I WANT to become emotionally involved with it feels wrong to rush it. Perhaps it all depends on expectations. I think perhaps it's because it's still not socially acceptable for women to go out just looking for a shag, so we tell ourselves we are looking for a relationship, even when what we actually want right then is just a shag, so we get disappointed.

On the other hand, I might just be weird for a girl (I can read maps too :D).

Of course there is. But that doesn't mean that I consider myself emotionally involved in all my social interactions.

/me laughs at 'social interactions'. How prim of you Smithy. :D As to what you said earlier, about being at one end or the other, thing is, I don't think pixel sex is a bad thing. It just isn't what I, in particular am in SL for, or what I want to do. It could be dangerous for me, being one of those emotional beings Pep is always flogging (so to speak, a virtual, wordy kind of flog that is). I don't want to fall in love with somebody in SL, and if I was having sex, I would. Then there's a whole new can of worms and tentacles to angst about. For me, best to stay away.

Edit: Unfortunately though, Pep vents his unrequited love for 3, all over the Residents Answers forum. lol. Why didn't we see this before?

I totally understand and support that perspective.

And this may surprise people but I totally have friends I don't have sex with!!

Oh, Pep's response to this should be vastly entertaining.

I've been in SL for over a year and have done a lot of different things, but one constant is that it is difficult to not end up emotionally involved with somebody.
It can be hard to find a community which is both very social and doesn't have a lot of "mating" overtones. But they do exist. Communities where people are casual about sharing RL information will often shy away from pixel-slapping, while still being very social and friendly - you will meet a lot of folks who are married IRL etc.. One or two of the Caledon satellite communities are this way.

People who socialize around a specific activity also may shy away from romance - I've come across subgroups in the sailing and medieval communities that are very friendly and casual, not prone to hitting on one other.

I have to say this as well: many of the SL children became child AVs in order to avoid emotional involvement. I wouldn't recommend that now, though, because of the rabid minority that is constantly throwing accusations in the faces of all and sundry child AVs.

And as had been said elsewhere in the thread, using an abstract avatar (there are some very cool non-robotic ones), can convey your disinterest nonverbally.
