In Latin, forum is a neuter noun; in its plural form, it is correct to say fora. The same reasoning applies to the word "memorandum"; in Latin, the plural is memoranda.

Thanks Luc. I'll remember that when I go to Latin America. I like to use the local lingo. :D

People... people... we shouldn't be fighting between ourselves. We're all internet forum nerdballs, and as such, we should be banding together to fight off the healthy, tanned, non-internet people who keep us down in the big, scary, real world.

All the regulars st SLU have a level of respect for each other, even if they disagree or don't get along. I can't say the same for this place.

Sarah, I'm going to use your message as my jump-off point for what I want to say. So here goes . . .

I am puzzled. I frequent both places. I am also a relative newbee in SL (just over 90 days). However, I am a veteran of online forums and a former head honcho and moderator of a prominent CompuServe writers' forum back in its heyday (apx 4000 posts/day).

I don't see how this "my team is better than your team" discussion helps anything. All it's doing is promoting "bad blood" between the members of both forums.

Isn't it good that there's a place for people who don't like moderation and there's a place for those who do?

I think so. Seems to me that's good. Each to their own.

While I do prefer good moderation over none, I also respect the right of others to choose their preferred form of forum (Some people like the East . . . and some people like the Wild West . . . and that's okay).

I also don't appreciate the people who incite such waste-of-time discussions--those who "stir up the pot". (You know who you are)

In a moderated forum (if I were moderating), this thread probably wouldn't have been permitted to continue . . . flame wars are not good. And the lead poster on this thread most certainly is trying to incite, so he would have been warned.

Most likely, he'd post again and I'd have had to ban him . . . or he'd post in another forum blasting my forum and its moderation . . . because that's the nature of these beasties. They feed on contention, frustration, and anger. They must feel like they've "won"; they must be the center of a storm, wherever they are.

They play to get a rise out of people . . . and they waste everyone's time.

So why is this discussion going any further? Do you all really enjoy the fight and flaming?

There's room for both forums. Hang out where you want.

Yeah...I've been hopping back and forth since signing up. I see all the same names in this thread that I see all over the place over there.

I have no idea whether Nina is a racist bigot or whatnot. I got the distinct impression that she was misinterpreted and she decided to run with it as a sort of mockery, but that's just IMHO.

But what did get *really* old was the formula of:

Nina says something about a topic at hand
J.N. would call her a racist and a bigot
Nina would ask what that has to do with anything/ask for a link/repeat her comment
Bunch of others would chime in agreeing with J.N.
Thread would deteriorate into Nina bashing
C.M. would ban Nina from the thread claiming that she is derailing the thread

Occasionally someone would ask J.N. to just stop derailing every thread with Nina racism accusations. They would be subtly or not so subtly accused of defending a racist.

It was funny the first n times...

I agree, except for the last line. It was never funny.

And I'm still waiting for Joshua to mention what his opinion on noselamps really might be.

I mean, after 800,000 times of Nina asking, at some point you really want to know his opinion already.

Actually I don't like the official forums due to the fact it's over moderated and for years they have not been able to figure out
CODE

A few observations:

1. Ad hominem attacks and name-calling as is found in this thread typically are found in threads that degenerate quickly into rancor, frustration, anger, and . . . wasteful "flame wars".

2. Good moderation outlaws ad-hominems and name-calling and keeps threads reasonably on topic.

This long message thread is a perfect example of the damage that ad-hominem (personal) attacks and "name-calling" can perpetrate.

What value does this discussion really have for anyone? Who is being served here? Who stirred up the pot? Who's stirring up the pot? They're the "winners"; they're being "fed" by this "discussion".

Everyone else is frustrated, angry, put-off, etc.

Hey - Im still wondering if "Fora" is a for-real word for Forums.

My lameness-o-meter doesn't like it.

Fora is a forum plural. So says the dictionary. Just as data is a plural of datum.

For some reason Nina calls facelights, or whatever there called, noselamps. Maybe hers attaches to her nose. I do not know. I do not wear mine any longer, but when I did, it hovered around my head.

Though I did also wear this light set-up, once.

With one exception, I didn't have any troubles either. But that's not everyone's experience. You can't prove by example. ;)

I'm not trying to prove anything. That was my experience. I know of others - not just you - who had bad experiences. One in particular spoke up about how she felt that one particular poster was being especially hard on new members and she was rewarded with him being especially hard on her. Kind of proved her point for her, but as a result, SLU lost someone who would have been a very good member.

The part I thought was silly was the posting of a thread heredesigned to create drama in both forums. I don't think it's fair for people to have to make a choice between one forum or another. I think you should be able to choose whatever you want. If you like it here, post here. If you like it there, post there. if you like both, post in both. It's silly to trash SLU in a thread here; and when it happens there, I think it's equally silly.

/me raises her hand and says:

"i'd like to interject something that well seems to have been lot in this; if you don't like going "across the street" or feel you have been treated poorly, don't go over there. geeze peoples, hasn't this horse been beat to dog food already?"

/me ducks and runs for the tomatoes and lettuce being hurled at her
