I have spent the last two days exploring a well known unofficial forum, but found the average IQ there to be significantly lower than here. Also, significantly lower than lettuce. Several regular forumites frequent a number of unofficial fora, but you all come back here for the good stuff.

Nasayers would have had us believe that the lack of moderation would have Residents' Answers collapse into an orgy of back-biting and flaming.

In truth, though, it seems to be more of a middle-aged suburban 1970s wife-swapping party than an actual orgy - yes it happens, but the wine is moderately good and it's set to freeform jazz. I for one prefer to sling my car keys into the communal bowl here.

Which do you spend the most time on?
Has the more relaxed approach to moderation here changed your foruming habits at all?

No poll, as polls suck balls.

Which one? It's like the competition to find the world's tallest dwarf.

I spend the majority of my time here and only sometimes pop 'across the street', but mostly that is because this is the forum I started on and where most of my friends are and the one I am used to. I have difficulty many days finding time to keep up on this one, let alone multiple forums.

I spend my time equally among two forums. Here and there.
I appreciate this forum for the straightforward answers to questions and the wonderful community of people here who are always willing to help a fellow SL'r out. I come here for all things second life.

The other forum I frequent is SL related, but the rules are less stuffy and it's a fun place to post and read when I'm feeling playful. It's rough like the wild west though. You could be nommed alive at any given moment. That's why I stay far, far away from the political and religious threads.

I'm equally at both, but imagine time over there will be more once "The New" forum is rolled out here.

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

There is the fact that the other forum I visit does not require PG posts - and there are times that I prefer being able to post a naughty pic or cuss to my heart's content.

1 user and all her alts agree wholeheartedly!

and links work there too!
Love the little laughs and groans too.

I actually do enjoy a little more laxed moderation here. To a certain degree. This is a straight up forum for SL. I'd be more in favor keeping it that way. If I want to be silly, read something off color, debate the latest things going on in the world or visit the wilder side of SL, I go there. But I do flip back and forth equally and enjoy them both in different ways.

I stick with this forum. The unofficial ones have too many semi-literate, foul-mouthed psychos there's a tendency for people to blame LL for everything.

I do belong to SL Profiles, though, and the blog on there is worth studying. So many people posting self-pitying 'I'm so hurt, why are people so hard-hearted?' entries, as well as other wierd stuff. I do post occasionally on there, but no heavy stuff and only about SL.

I'm sorry you didn't find the discourse pleasing or sufficient. I know I for one, was positively enlightened by your thought provoking assessment of adopted children delivered with a savagely witty humour, and would hate to think we would be deprived of such an intellect. Please, don't look too harshly on our feeble-minded selves, and do continue to uplift our souls and our minds, for we surely are in desperate need, as you so correctly perceive.

Yours in hope,

A.Lettuce

Iceberg I'm afraid; the lowest common denominator.

Funny you should say that; but I have been asked specifically to do just that.

But I prefer it on sandwiches to tell the truth. I like the crunchiness...especially on a BLT.

Arguing on internet for can provide a marvellous catharsis. Two people can bait each other and sling insults, and both go away thinking they're the winner. Everybody's happy because everybody thinks they've won a victory and thinks they're the shit. I, for one, like making people happy and am just glad to do my bit.

Blatant trolling, Conan.

I like this forum, and visit others occasionally. I find these two types of threads very unpleasant, no matter where I see them:

> A thread created to gripe about another forum. (yes, like this thread)

> A bloated thread created to promote another forum. Listing your forum here in "Resident Websites" is fine, soliciting all 3-rd party forum members to flood that thread with testimonials degenerates ... every time ... into negative namecalling about either the host forum or the forum being advertised. Yech.

Live and let live, I say. Conan, if you don't like it across the street, don't go there.

It serves that purpose too, yes. It's an efficient, multi-purpose thread.

Nasayers would have had us believe that the lack of moderation would have Residents' Answers collapse into an orgy of back-biting and flaming.
Admittedly, I was one of those cowering in the corner expecting the sky to fall. And it didn't happen. I'm still not at all sure *why* it didn't happen, so I don't know what to learn from that mistake, but anyway, I was wrong. Mea culpa.

As to the other forums, I post there rarely, usually when naming names is necessary, or when effective expression demands using the F-word, or when they seem to be having too much fun bashing this place or its regulars. (So it would be less than genteel to speak ill of them here, right? And above all else, we must preserve our reputation as the forum for the tea-and-crumpets set, with the occasional pastry.)

There are a few people who post only or mostly there who would add a lot to these fora if they could be charmed back into the fold. On the other hand, if they left, I doubt I'd ever venture over there at all.

Which reminds me of a question I had, back when there was much ado about the coming changes here: many regulars from the other forum strongly urged LL to change the rules here to essentially match the ones there. I certainly understand that they like the way things operate there, and that's cool, but if this place were exactly like that place, would they all want to come over here?

I think the two serve somewhat complementary purposes and fairly disjoint sets of posters; after the changes here, perhaps the purposes will be even more distinct--and in fact that may lead to more crossing-over of posters. And that doesn't seem so dreadful, if it were to happen.

I think the main reason it didn't happen is because right about that time I found Yahoo! Answers. But now that I'm banned from there, there are going to be a few changes around here.

I'm afraid I find the other major community a bit youthful. I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean as a middle aged person I have trouble understanding or relating to many of the posts. I don't think this has anything to do with moderation or the lack of it. Communities evolve in their own directions to become whatever they wind up being.Right now I get more out of this one.

I dont have time to read two.. If someone posts a link to a thread over there I go and read, and I might pootle about a bit reading some other stuff, but i stick to RA.

Since Moderation ceased here things haven't degenerated into the mess that some predicted, I think because RA posters value RA too much to let it go bad, knowing that the slightest excuse will make LL shut it down. I think it must be driving them nuts... and I am laughing hopefully, that they don't have any excuse yet.

With one or two exceptions threads have remained either helpful or entertaining, sometimes going from one to the other, and not become nasty.

Long may it continue so

Imogen

I try to take part in SLU but most of the threads are non SL related and kinda jokey and tedious. Also there's some fairly aggressive people there that take any opportunity they can to attack me. Really, what I'm saying is I can't stand the whole culture there but I try to stay informed so I do check it out pretty regularly, mostly only the Business, Land and Economy board though.
