I have spent the last two days exploring a well known unofficial forum, but found the average IQ there to be significantly lower than here. Also, significantly lower than lettuce.

i don't know about the general level of IQ's because i didn't stay long enough to find out, but i did find that other place cliquey and mean... i love a good debate, but not when it consists of regular gang attacks simply to boost egos and unite shallow minds.

I stick with this forum. The unofficial ones have too many semi-literate, foul-mouthed psychos there's a tendency for people to blame LL for everything.

Have you not seen the "underage brother" thread?

Iceberg lettuce is good for the mouth feel. Ever tried to put spinach on tacos? Good idea in theory, but they're not tacos any more.

for now I like it here, however that may change when we get our 3rd party mods.

I'm equally at both, but imagine time over there will be more once "The New" forum is rolled out here.

There again you go with the dissing of the new moderation persons.

I like this forum because it's so big that no matter who you are there are people who don't know you, don't care about your post count, and aren't afraid to disagree with you. This forum also has the critical mass to make the learning threads really useful, and there are some stellar contributors here.

I like the differences. Like M and Ms. One has a red candy shell, the other has a green candy shell, but they're both chocolate inside. Yummy milk chocolate.

I like pie.

I do hope that meets the intellectual requirements of the O.P. I just couldn't bear to not not have met up to some anonymous persons internet standards.

It is wonderfully fertile trolling ground though. I've never seen anyone go into a fit of emo histrionics as quickly as one individual did yesterday.

I occasionally follow a link to Another Forum but never stay long simply because I can't stand the look of the thing. I actually find it quite hard to find the posts among all the visual clutter.

I'm not a visitor to any other SL fora, but two or three non-SL boards. I'm often shocked by the low standards of posts elsewhere. In most places, folk post ALL IN CAPS, b20k3n 133t5p34k, scream, rant, threaten, troll and generally act like a bunch of spoiled and clueless teens. Which I guess a lot of them are. OK, it happens here too on occasion, but it's the exception, like good manners and intelligence seem to be on most other fora.

Well, this was the first SL forum I posted to.. so I kind of feel it's 'home' for me.

I'm also here because it's rather like watching a train wreck about to happen, only in very slow motion.. err, because I want to see how the new moderators and forum will work out before! Yeah, that's what I mean!

The other forum.. well, I go there, but it's more like I'm visiting someone's house. Someone I don't visit too often, apparently.

Oh dear this thread is not going to help inter-forum relationships *shakes head sadly*

I visit both frequently or infrequently depending on what I am doing in RL.

I have visited "across the street" and prefer to be here.

ETA: I really need to say this. I prefer to be here because the environment over there is so hostile that I walk away feeling stressed. New posters are nothing more than raw meat for some of those folks, so I'm not even inclined. I think I have a grand total of one post there.

Ironic, considering a lot of them are Vegetarians.

I spent a few months over there before abandoning it. I think the impression of low IQ is way off the mark. There are some very *very* intelligent people there. I don't know how it compares to here, but it's definitely much higher than other types of forums in my experience.

I personally feel that a very small few have done a great job of steering the direction for the place, but it's not to my taste. Since the owner doesn't feel the need to sort it out, I have to assume that it is exactly the sort of place he wants to own and run. Which is great - I'm happy for him.

I found myself being far too aggressive and hateful over there... A personal flaw I'm sure, but that place really did bring out the worst in me. And since I didn't like what I saw in myself, I left. It's a shame, because there are some truly wonderful people there who's posts I miss reading, and there was the possibility of some friendships which are unlikely to happen now.

As for this forum, well, not nearly as cliquish. Where there are groups of friends (or cliques if you must), they aren't inherently hostile and don't tend to pile on the victim as much. So it's less of an issue.

Since I hardly have time to keep up with this forum, I feel not inclined to frequent others. Yet one of the more popular ones, I did take a few peeks in, and did not like what I saw. The all over design sucks (imo) and the level of discussion I witnessed was below zero. Conan might even, intentionally or not, have offended the average lettuce with his remark.

Your average bot thread over here is civilized compared to what I saw there. If anything, I do like a good level of discussing, and it is hard discussing with teenagers it seems. When arguments fail, rudeness rules. Sad.

This place could use a little more moderation then it currently has, but even without that moderation we are doing pretty well!

I turn into a lunatic, ranting bitty over there, but I have to admit, at almost nine months prenant, I enjoy unloading it. And so far, what I've found is that people haven't held a grudge beyond the end of the thread. It seems to bring people closer...in fact... ;)

It's not particularly Buddhist of me, but it is hormonal. I blame it on the fetus.

Not everyone that goes both ways is young or dumb. Colette, for example, is probably one of the smartest women I've had the pleasure in meeting in both places, and I believe we are both well out of our twenties. heh. I sure am...way way out. :o

To understand some psych behind forums, and life in general, I'd suggest this read:

http://www.salon.com/env/mind_reader/2008/09/22/voter_choice/index.html

From: someone
...In short, smart people tend to believe that everyone else "gets it." Incompetent people display both an increasing tendency to overestimate their cognitive abilities and a belief that they are smarter than the majority of those demonstrably sharper...

...feelings of conviction, certainty and other similar states of "knowing what we know" may feel like logical conclusions, but are in fact involuntary mental sensations that function independently of reason....

and the really scary part:

From: someone
...Most cognitive scientists now believe that the majority of our thoughts originate in the areas of the brain inaccessible to conscious introspection.

Each forum has its own personality.

I used to post here a whole lot (see post count) but moved out when this forum "closed." Perhaps well that I did because at the time even the most important discussion threads here were 10% important info and 90% histrionic noise. I grew terribly weary of having to filter through a thread that had too much chaff.

I signed on to three third party forums. Off the bat I found Second Citizen's no-moderation policy a big step backward in terms of what I was looking for. SL Drama was too quiet.

I found SL Universe to be the right mix for me. There was room for the serious and very intelligent discussions, with almost no chaff. There was room for the funny. There was room for the off-topic. Being a third-party forum there was room for non-SL worlds too.

I've found discussions there to be highly intelligent and sometimes frighteningly so. At the same time I get my dose of the funny that brightens my work day on a regular basis.

Every forum will be different and it's up to you to find the one you want. Why I'm no longer here? The official blog and SLU keep me updated, I don't feel I'm missing any news. What I needed was something that had SL peeps without being 100% SL.

I never understand why it has to be either one or the other. The two places are quite different.

I like it because of the wide variety of topics and posters. I like SL, but I don't always want to talk about it. I'm grateful to SL for initiating the process of me finding "across the street" because now I've found a super group of people who can discuss anything under the sun, intelligently.

There's silliness, yes, but I don't think that translates as youthfulness (and I'm certainly not youthful, not by any stretch). And silliness is good sometimes. People go off the deep end sometimes, but that is part and parcel of belonging to a community of any kind.

It just seems pointless for one group to poke the other in an attempt to assert supremacy, and reflects badly on the person/group that started it.

@Midi

And I like it when people are comfortable being deliberately silly and comfortable with laughing at themselves.
