I always thought one could spot male controlled female avatars because of their typically overexaggerated assets.

Not any more !, some people go to length to make sure their avatar looks as best as they could, and dress in the high 9's !.

Finally for some it is a chance to explore sexual fantasies, sadly often at the expense others (think RL lesbians finding out the wonderful woman they met is a guy in RL who has a thing for lesbians)

Sadly, I used to know a woman that was a RL lesbian, she kinda fell in love with me and never realized till the last day before her operation that I was male in real life, sadly, she never returned back to SL.

These days, I always try to make a sure a friend, partner, lover, or torturer realize that I'm a SL lesbian rather than an RL lesbian...

Releasing their inner females? After all this is the one place they can act them out without fear of being exposed. Buying makeup, stockings, lingere, making sure their butts look good.

Then you turn around and say this stupid thing !!

From: someone
Why? To impress other men, of course.

Where have you been !!, very few men that are playing women are going to be interested in men !.

/me hauls off and gives him five across the head...

That would come as quite a surprise to Lot and his wife who weren't married or Job and his wife who weren't married?

The Book of Job is considered to be by archaeologists the oldest copy of an ancient biblical writing in existence right now, dating back to about 8000 years before Christ.

I'm going need a citation for the "8000 years BC" bit, as the oldest surviving examples of written records I am aware of date something like 3500-4000bc and are Sumerian or Phoenician.

Anyways, this is all a digression from the topic at hand here. The simple truth is, if your so goddamn worried about the gender of the person behind the AV, the only real way to know the truth is to know them for a long period of time. Voices can be altered, pics can be fake, even webcam feeds can be faked for that matter. The hardest thing to fake is ones real persona over a long period.

Its pretty sad that in a situation like SL where ones real nature tends to shine through so strongly, disregarding such trivialities like appearance and gender, people still get so hung up on these things. Ive known alot of people in the 3 years I've been in SL, of those there are a mere handful whose RL gender and/or appearance I have known with certainty. And most of the time, I don't really care. There is someone I have known for nearly 3 years now whose RL gender I am only somewhat certain I know.

Of course, I don't generally see SL as primarily a vehicle for mutual masturbation, so your mileage may vary.

I've met a few people that were playing women and they were CD's or transvestites in real life, but that doesn't bother me as I always treat them as I see them.

Good for you! And I mean that totally without sarcasm. If more people took that attitude (SL & RL, both) there'd be a lot less stress and drama.

From: Judie Zenovka
I have no worries at all about being "caught", I mention in my profile, in several places, that I'm lesbian, I even have "lesbian" mentioned in my title, and I have no problem attracting women either :-).

I suppose it depends on what you mean (or what you think I mean) by being caught.

Being found iRL playing SL as a woman (what I meant).
Being found out within SL that you are really a guy. (what I suspect you mean).

I don't mind being caught either way, but some people might... the closeted TVs I referred to in my post, for example.

Most folks treat people as they see them. For example - a transvestite will naturally be treated as a transvestite.

But in Second Life it can be difficult because people can't see eachother.

How is that even vaguely possible, since the world hasn't existed for much more than 6000 years?

Bad Love. I nearly snorted coffee out my nose.

Because for many people the avatar isn't the person. So it's difficult to treat people as you see them when you can't see them.

That's why I think it's best to take an avatar at face value. (^_^)

In SL, we get to be what our conscious desires and can take on the form we feel represents us best. Regardless of what avatar we're forced to deal with in real life. (^_^)

I, for one, am not comfortable with my real life avatar and wish I had all these sliders available to change things on the fly. My real life appearance doesn't match my "me" at all. But, my SL avatar is the me that's more "me" than I can be on my own. I don't see how my RL avatar affects that. (^_^)

My SL avatar reflects my person 100%. My RL avatar doesn't resemble my person at all. (^_^)y

Oh I do. I treat an avatar as a 3D model.

I think the majority of folks would say that your "RL avatar" and your mind is you. A 3D model that you've customized is totally irrelevant.

If you use a dog avatar then does that make you a dog in RL? :)

But yes, you can express yourself through your avatar. But like any creation - it's always going to be open to interpretation.

For many people, the avatar is a better reflection of the person, without the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

I never really understood phrases like "Coyote Ugly". They're quite pretty animals.

Why would someone choose an avatar they *don't* believe reflects themselves? You're saying most people's avatars are deceptive rather than reflective?

My RL avatar is 51 years old and has suffered through 10 years of debilitating illness, it is not a pretty sight. But my mind is still young and I refuse to believe what I see in the mirror. Three years ago I was in Guadalajara and got to go see Carlos Santana in concert. While there I looked around and kept saying to myself "Wow, look at all of these old people!". Funny how the mind works, I do the same when I go to the mall and see people as old or even younger then myself. To me, I will always be one of the young ones running around trying on all of the hip clothes.

My avatar is a perfect reflection of the inner me.

This is the case for a lot of people. I think we all take it for granted that because our avatars are up and walking and happy and carefree so are the rl users.. I'm glad this can help you feel young!!

omg carlos santana.... I LOVE HIM.... /me turns green with envy

although i am male, i prefer nowadays to interact in sl as a female. For one I don't have the emotional entanglement, which I have often fallen foul of as a male and there is no onus on me as a male to to allow myself to be hurt. Being a different sex in sl has nothing to do with rl and I don't think there is any disatisfaction with the male gender per se. Apart from that my female avi is far hotter and nicer than some of the females I have interacted with in sl.........sad I know but true...........

MY RL avatar, is not an avatar at all, it's me, flesh bone, hair etc......

I'm lucky, my RL is good, I am fit, happy, have a good job (that doesn't restrict internet usage lol).

I think SL is a fantastic tool for people who are not as fortunate as I am

Unless created for a specific roleplaying purpose, most avatars are some sort of reflection of their driver, be it recreating themselves as accurately as possible, or what we ideally want to be, or a creative aspect that we wish to express. Whether we feel it is us is an individual thing I think. We all have different levels of attachment/detachment.

Well looking around SL it would seem a lot of folks just want their avatar to look cute and sexy. I'm not sure what we're supposed to take from that.

But in the context of - "Just judge people as you see them" - dream on, baby..
