From: Ralektra Breda y'know what is scary is how the stuff from AARP starts arriving in the mail right on your 50th birthday....big brother and all that I honestly enjoy AARP - I'm semi-retired and the dental insurance they offer is great...plus discounts on glasses and some of the articles are interesting. They had one recently on Glenn Close speaking out about erasing the shame of mental illness and being a mental health counselor, that type of info is interesting to me. Oh, back on topic...kinda...now the mail that *I* find scary are the funeral home/cremation services pamphlets I get.

From: Rhaorth Antonelli I have no clue why some folks find it so hard to say their age
it is only a number, no big deal
as I already said I am 44
do I act 44? I dunno, how is someone who is 44 supposed to act?
do I look 44? Again, I dunno, how is someone who is 44 supposed to look?
*shrug*
still me, the same person I have been for 44 years, no big deal
I like being the age I am and am happy every year to be able to celebrate another year on this planet... Very true and reminds me of an exercise we did in one of my grad. school classes. The exercise was to say "This is what (my age) looks like" and then say a bit how we felt about it. The fascinating thing from that exercise was that the younger students (mid-20's-early 30's) expressed that they felt stressed that they had not accomplished what they wanted by this time and felt most anxious about their age...by the time it got to students in their 50's - and we had one student who was 67, iirc, the responses were - "This is what (age) looks like and I love my life. I wouldn't want to be any younger because of all the experience I've gained, etc." I don't consider my age "old" at all. But even then, I don't even feel like my biological age. At any rate, when asked how she felt about being 89, my grandmother said "It's better than the alternative."

From: Kaimi Kyomoon I'm proud to have survived 61 years so far. Smoother skin and better eyesight are pretty much the only things I miss about being young. I have some really great friends of all ages, including younger than my kids, and no matter how cool people are they are almost always able to get more cool as they get older. Well, Baby Boomers *are* the coolest generation *grins* We broke a lot of traditional molds and, not sure about this, but I *think* we may be the largest population segment.

From: spinster Voom It's funny, I didn't mind doing this poll at all, even though it shows names, whereas if someone asks my age inworld (unless it's someone I have known for a long while) I really resent it. Being directly asked one's age is rude. (Especially to a lady. I've given that lecture to many a person on IRC who began a/s/l chats.) That usually took care of them IMing me again.

From: Quixotic Hermit The youth of today forget that it was we and those prior to us who forged the computer age they now take for granted. None of them know about the pleasures of multi-phone line BBSes and text based computer games. Funny, how they think they own technology when it has been a part of my life since I played Pong. I really miss some of the first video computer games. Burger Time was one of my favorites as well as, of course, Pac-Man. The first time I ever saw a video game, my husband and I were at some friend's house and they said, "HEY, check this out!!" On the kitchen table they had a small TV and some console thing hooked up to it. We're like - what the heck is this? Our friends said...watch..this is so much fun! That was the first time I played Pong!

From: Czari Zenovka Yes, comments like "Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?!?!?" kinda gives age away. *grins*
Wings? A whole generation doesn't even know who they were.

From: Briana Dawson I think fingers are a better measure. But i've also heard the nose is a sign too. But it is all about quality and I've heard that dance ability is a good indicator.

From: HoneyBear Lilliehook Seriously people, this poll was in direct response to the Logan's Run thread. If you don't like it...don't respond. There's no need for anyone to come in here and get nasty, or create 12 alts to respond in it. Just amazing how people have to be crappy to other people in order to make their own lives better. It's getting to be that it should be put on the SL home page under all the stuff you can do......... "Shop, Own Land , Create, Flirt, Act like a Juvenile Jackass and Annoy Others."

From: Brenda Connolly ..... Act like a Juvenile Jackass ... The word "act" would imply they are not like that usually and with that person, I somehow just don't think that applies.

What is it that would bother you most? Mom dancing on a pole? Creating things? Hopping on a poseball? When I was 22, I was outside raising hell.

That was the first time I played Pong! In the early 70's I owned/managed a little beer bar. The pong game I had in there was the first video game I ever saw. It was horizontal, set into a table top. From: LittleMe Jewell Why?
My son is 22 and loves that I am in SL and having fun. I brought my mom into SL, 66 yrs old, and I love that she is having a blast. You're a good daughter. My son got me into SL, then found a developer and talked her into hiring me to make an orientation area. If he had started on parenthood as young as I did I could have a grandchild now old enough to be on the adult grid - just saying.

From: LittleMe Jewell I always wondered WHY it was rude? I think it goes back to people thinking that older is bad and not wanting to admit their age, so then if asked they either have to lie or not respond. I'd have to research it a little...but I don't think that it was "bad" or people not wanting to admit their age...but bad manners in a traditional sense of what was considered manners at a certain point in time. Ok, since logins are down, decided to do some research on this. From this Wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etiquette_in_Canada_and_the_United_StatesExcerpts: From: someone Traditional codified western etiquette codes developed during the Victorian era, when etiquette standards were based on social expectations. As North American society has shifted its moral focus away from social uniformity and towards fairness since the 1950s, etiquette standards have also evolved to treat sexes, classes, and races equally. Then later in this article: From: someone It is impolite to ask an adult their age, weight, or other personal physical matters. Asking someone's age is only acceptable when they are young children. These are highly personal matters which should not be brought up except with people you are highly familiar with. So the current rules of Western etiquette now include being rude to ask women *and* men their age, etc. I glanced at other search results while reading this and saw that in Latin American countries it is considered rude to ask a woman's age. So, like other customs this is at least partially cultural. I had a friend who, when asked anything she did not wish to answer, responded with, "Why do you wish to know?" That really put the onus back on the original questioner. (I have to remember that...I tend to just blurt out the answer.)

From: LittleMe Jewell Many of the "young uns" couldn't figure out how to do anything on the computer if a GUI wasn't there to help them along. QFT! For a long time after Windows was introduced, I still used DOS to troubleshoot as I was most familiar with it and sometimes it really was the only way to solve the issue.
