I used to get the A/S/L a lot on a game I used to play, I always used to answer "70, Male, my mother's basement". Worked every time.
!Lol!

I actually left a corporation where I was in outside sales to join one of the managers, who had also left to purchase a franchise that sold the first IBM Personal Computers, as one of his sales staff.

Those PC's ran 128K memory and with a second party green or amber monitor (remember those?)...the selling price was $12,500.

Out of curiosity, what computer ran OS-8? The first OS I learned on was C/PM, I think. (Temporary memory loss setting in...lol.)

My first computer ran C/PM, Z80 CPU, dual floppies, 64K Ram, 300 baud modem, 5" screen. And my first programming class in college was Fortran using punch cards.

Honeybear no offense but you can't dictate how others respond to a question. People are gonna have all sorts of opinions and responses.

From: someone
So the current rules of Western etiquette now include being rude to ask women *and* men their age, etc. I glanced at other search results while reading this and saw that in Latin American countries it is considered rude to ask a woman's age. So, like other customs this is at least partially cultural.

I don't see this as something new, at least not where and how I was brought up. Basic rule of courtesy: If you don't *need* to know, don't ask. If you aren't fairly sure of the response (i.e. if you don't already know and are asking to be nosy/curious), don't ask. Not unless you know that person really, really well and then chances are, you already know.

This is so that the lady one asks "when it's due" doesn't burst into tears because it's just weight gain. Or the person who looks older than their years isn't made self conscious at the raised brow that might result with their answer. (Or, for someone who looks older than their years, to dread the inevitable 'so what do you wanna be/what are you doing with your life?' followup.) Or so that the person you ask about their spouse's sudden trip to Bermuda doesn't burst into tears because the spouse is there with the secretary. Basic courtesy, there are other things to chat about than personal information.

Not asking a lady, especially, her age, weight, or status upon just meeting her shows a certain level of courtesy and therefore, imo, decency or even 'class' (nothing to do with economics). Class is simply wishing everyone to feel comfortable and their best self. In real life, would any of us walk right up to a stranger and ask personal details? I doubt it. I never liked being asked personal things of someone I didn't know well enough that they had already learned them by degrees over time. (Making such questions, except when filling out official paperwork, always obsolete.) I guess those lessons stuck.

DEC PDP-8.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDP-8

And evidently the 3-bit year was added to 1965 or so, not 1960.

I feel sorry for the 56-yr-olds, who can't vote in any category. Well, that's just the kind of guy I am, sensitive and considerate. Yet someone on another thread called me insensitive, can you believe it?
It is quite possible I am calling you unable to read also, especially as I didn't even say that. Still a good anecdote, is a good anecdote, even if wrong ;)
Did I say you said anything? I don't recall doing that. Since you can read so much better than I can, perhaps you can show me where.

However, you did say this:

Lear, you may feel this way but to casually dismiss the differing feelings of others could be seen as insensitive.
That's all I'll say on this matter. After all, it was just a weak joke.

Since you quoted me I will respond. Show me where I say you *are* insensitive rather than saying you could be seen that way. Funnily enough when I took English there was a definite difference between the two so it seems perhaps I can.
Also I too added a little joke on the end also, maybe it was also a little weak but its fair wouldn't you say? Don't worry you don't have to answer that.

Age is a fashion statement. I'm 26, and I don't care.
If you hide your age, you are ashamed of it. :P

Not hiding it.... Just not revealing it. I'm not required to so I'm not going to. I'm "old enough". Take my avatar at face value and enjoy, thankyouverymuch. (^_^)y

Wrong, epic fail?

Without a reasoning, I accept you as a the actual fail.

I don't care about showing my age.
Some lie about it, or just hide it. So what?

My logic is pretty simple. You hide something because you are ashamed of it. Not true?
What is your excuse then? also ashamed of the reason you have for not sharing?

You must have more dilemma's than I thought.

@Imnotgoing Sideways, thanks for reasoning. That's nice. :)

I like how fiery the other two reacts to my shamelessness. I stomped their truth-toe a bit too hard I think. ;)

I understand and respect your attitude but I prefer not to waste time trying to explain my cultural allusions to people who probably wont understand them. What is the point of making jokes about Tinky Winkys sexuality when the person who I am talking to wants to talk about the symbology involved in the colour and size of James.

I wrote *Epic Fail* because your viewpoint is narrow minded and judgmental. Your reasoning "why" is faulty and fails to explain the "why". I didn't write "why" because frankly if have already prejudged and you don't see "why not" then nothing I say is going to educate you.
Nobody has to explain anything to you, least of which why they may wish to keep any part of their RL info private. There does not have to be anything wrong with them or their choice.
Just accept it and move on.

Sure, but I didn't force anyone to give their personal info. I would never do that.
Besides, I think what I think.

I find that hiding your age is useless. If you think otherwise, then you simply do. And then you keep that info to yourself. I won't cry over it.

But anyone may know my age. Because I personally don't care about that number.

And yes, I keep to it that shame is the real problem. Or privacy? well, I can stalk you if I know how hold you are? So Privacy isn't it.

Principles? If you had principles you wouldn't even reply to my ramblings. :D
So yeah, let's move on. This discussion is not worth battering out like this.

You like to hide your age, just, because you can and allowed to, And I don't.
So, can I have cake now?

Interesting poll and some really weird responses. I never 'admit' my age, but I do tell people it if they ask. 'Admit' makes it sound like a crime to own up to. For the record, I'm 38, and the information is in the RL tab of my profile. People still ask.

To all those wanting to hide their age... that's fine too. I find it truly strange that people condemn you for wanting that privacy. The poll would have been better if it had maintained confidentiality, because more people would have voted (and would be more likely to be honest).

As to the results: about what I expected. For my first few months in SL I assumed I'd be older than the average, but after a while I began to realise most of the people I met were around my age. I have friends here under 25 and over 70, which is something I enjoy about SL.

No I won't admit it but safe to say that,I have seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.......................Time to put the kettle on........
