Approaching 60 real fast. Big effing deal. When does this 'gets mellow in your old age' stuff kick in?

And if you never spent an afternoon running a memory manager to make a program run in DOS, you're too young to vote IMO. Hell, if you don't know what the 'dup' key on the keypunch does, cut up your registration card. Leave the voting to those who not only have all the answers, but also most of the valid opinions. Any questions about yours, send it to me on a 3 by 5 card and I'll get back to you later.

Trust me. I'm over 50. Have I ever lied to you before?

Sure, but I didn't force anyone to give their personal info. I would never do that.
Besides, I think what I think.

I find that hiding your age is useless. If you think otherwise, then you simply do. And then you keep that info to yourself. I won't cry over it.

But anyone may know my age. Because I personally don't care about that number.

And yes, I keep to it that shame is the real problem. Or privacy? well, I can stalk you if I know how hold you are? So Privacy isn't it.

Principles? If you had principles you wouldn't even reply to my ramblings. :D
So yeah, let's move on. This discussion is not worth battering out like this.

You like to hide your age, just, because you can and allowed to, And I don't.
So, can I have cake now?
You are so trying to force people to reveal their age. What the hell do you think peer pressure is? Telling people they have something to hide and are probably suffering shame over their age is attempting to pile on lots of pressure. You are the one who should hang their head in shame at such a transparent attempt at it.

I am suffering no shame at my RL age at all. I am very comfortable being me with all my details. I am not hiding anything but I do choose not to publicly reveal *any* RL stats about myself, so again your opinions as well as being obnoxious are failures of speculation of at least my motivations.

If the discussion is not worth it then you can choose not to respond, however it fails as a way of trying to suppress a response from me. No you cannot have cake.

Age is a fashion statement. I'm 26, and I don't care.
If you hide your age, you are ashamed of it. :P

If I were still 26 I'd be shouting it from the hilltops. Let's see how you feel about it in 26 more years :)

DEC PDP-8.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDP-8

And evidently the 3-bit year was added to 1965 or so, not 1960.

Ohh, ok. Thanks :)

When I went to training school (sent by the manager who opened the franchise to sell the first IBM PC's) we worked on DEC's but last night I couldn't recall the name of that computer. For some reason they didn't have IBM's yet to train us on, but used the DEC's to introduce us to data base, spreadsheet and word processing software.

Actually, there were some things about the DEC I liked better than the IBM...which now I know had to do with the OS. I'll have to read that article. Always wondered what happened to the DECs.

My logic is pretty simple. You hide something because you are ashamed of it. Not true?
I'll bet you think it is okay for the government to come search your house or car or whatever, without any probable cause or warrent, because you have nothing to hide.

QFT. And the corollary to something my former husband used to tell me: Not telling everything you know is NOT lying. (I tend to over disclose sometimes. :o)

OTOH, my former husband was a sociopathic liar (per his counselor and my experiences) so maybe I shouldn't listen too much to his advice. :p

DEC Rainbow. Killed by the people in DEC that didnt see a future in personal computers as well as because they used dual processor proprietary architecture and had a native VT100 mode which meant that they did everything anyone could want badly. Good riddance.

Yes - but not long after the earthquake that lifted the island of Java above the ocean.

No coffee was invented by Al Gore so he could stay awake long enough to invent the internet.

I understand and respect your attitude but I prefer not to waste time trying to explain my cultural allusions to people who probably wont understand them. What is the point of making jokes about Tinky Winkys sexuality when the person who I am talking to wants to talk about the symbology involved in the colour and size of James.
True, to a limit... Considering the global aspect of SL, the same could apply if you're dealing with someone from another country. Another detail I choose not to openly reveal. When you meet me inworld, you meet "Immy", my own ideal person who knows very little about the outside world or what goes on beyond the keyboard. From there on, we learn about each other. (^_^)

Things like age, place, gender, race are things I prefer to avoid when meeting people. You meet "me" as who I am, not what I am. That, to me, is true adventure in socializing. When someone comes to me while I'm mentoring and asks "Where can I find the [insert narrow-minded community expectation here] places?" I really lose the will to help them. Not only because I don't actually really know the places. But, also because I wonder why someone would choose to focus so tightly when they have the entire world offered to them on a silicon platter. (O.o)

I DO get to know people after a while. My friends know my age, location, some even have RL pictures of me... But that was well after I got to know them. They span from 18 (Fresh from the teen grid) to over 65. They live in Europe, Canada, America, UK, Japan, The Philippines, Australia, Brazil, ... you name it. Our differences are the most entertaining parts of our relationships. We have all our little *isms we talk about. Sure, sometimes they take explanation... But, that's the joy. In some ways, I understand my Japanese friends better than my next door neighbors. At the same time, I get along better with the people far and beyond my age group. (^_^)

So... I have my reasons for being un-revealing. I don't want my friendships to be sycophantic gatherings. Meet me first, talk to me, decide on friendships based on conversation... We can work out the details later... Avoid the walls and enjoy the crowd. =^-^=

Ah ha! I knew it!

Java was around before the internet! :p

And people said it was created FOR the internet. Phooey on them!

LOL! I never hide my age. I just let people assume I'm younger than I am! :D

I am 39 going on 40 in May.

And beware of who you admit your age to- some of us dirty old men prefer dating younger women

I always thought you had to be at least 60 or so to be a "dirty old man". That could just be the way I look at it because I am 46. When I was in my early 20s, I probably did think of 40 as "dirty old man".

One good reason, I think, not to reveal rl age and other personal facts if to give others the best chance to interact with us and form impressions of us based soley on what we say and do.

It is not true to a limit. It is true. I feel the same way about communicating with people from significantly different cultures different religions different intellectual capabilities and so on. Perhaps you have more time to waste than I have trying to understand things that perhaps you never will. I prefer to talk to people that might understand me without a dictionary or checking imdb or a TV Guide and that I have a good chance of understanding in return. By your argument someone who only spoke Japanese could spend a lifetime trying to understand someone in SL who only spoke Hungarian and still get nothing much from it. As I originally said that is up to you and I was not critical of you for your preference as you seem to have been of me. I prefer to use my time more efficiently discussing more interesting concepts than what other people have for breakfast and I get little joy in spending excessive amounts of time attempting to eliminate verbal misunderstandings. I also take exception to you suggesting that there is anything sycophantic about people of the same age culture etc talking to each other. Maybe you dont spend enough time looking in a dictionary before you write.

I DO!

And mine still works! All 400+ Floppy disks still in their case.

I still remember spending a weekend typing in PEEK and POKE statements just to see Alfred E. Neuman's face move across the screen.

Right up until you POKE off the screen area and destroy your program.
