Hmmm surely none of the opinion threads are really very productive?
I don't know, this one had some nifty pictures.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Very cool, reminds me of the Lost Boys grungy look and I loved that film :) VV
Did you know they are already planning (possibly already shooting) a remake? *facepalms* is nothing sacred?

Here is a not so recent picture of me (I am terrible at remembering to take pictures):

Man, I'm always getting my ass kicked at the CEO level. I got past Steve Jobs (left left down double-tap when he starts throwing the iShurikens) but I always use up too many geek points for me to get past Steve Ballmers "Developers Developers Developers" attack.

Hmmm.

I've followed this thread with interest; in particular the back and forth between Ann and Rha. I found myself agreeing and disagreeing with both of them at different points in the discussion.

I agree that a person has the right to decide with whom they want to associate based on something as frivolous as appearance and that we all do it, in SL just like we do in RL.

I also agree that it seems a narrow life view, particularly in SL - a place where we are ALL playing dress up. Even human Avi's most likely don't provide an accurate representation of who we are in RL, I mean can we just get real here?

I have to also admit, it's difficult for me to swallow the word "tolerance" as a woman of mixed race who is also a lesbian, the word "tolerate" suggests something uglier than simply 'live and let live'. "Oh, you don't fit into what is the norm or what is comfortable for me, but here...let me "tolerate" you. (read: put up with you cause I have no other choice) UGH.

Whatever.

But...this conversation also forced me to look at my own SL prejudices (and yes that's what it IS - prejudice). Honestly? Kid Avi's creep me out (sorry Mari and Ima), but it just the truth; I don't get it. I also am not drawn to Furries and have zero interest in that particular culture. And don't get me started on the hoochie-mama, big boobs, bigger hair "Barbie" types....

But did or does this prevent me from engaging a person wearing this type of Avi in conversation? Um...NO. If we happen to be in a place where small talk is appropriate, say waiting for a show to start or an art gallery, I won't avoid it because of they way they look. That's just dumb to me. Sorry. Frankly I've met Avi's that look just like mine (read; traditionally human) who turned out to be - you'll excuse the expression - morons.

But anyway on a lighter note:

I have LOVED dragons and dinosaurs since I could barely walk. The fact that I can see them and touch them and even BE one in SL is a constant source of wonder and pleasure for me. Same goes for fairies, drow, griffons, hobbits and all the other magical creatures of my childhood story books. I also think Vampires, when done well, are teh SMEXY.

I saw an enormous bull-like Avi the other day, red eyed, breathing fire and growling loudly and even though I knew there was a human behind it, it still made me want to laugh and clap like a 5 year old. SL ROCKS for this stuff.

On a final note: I think there is nothing in fantasy land more sublime than a female Neko.
1/2 woman, 1/2 cat...my gosh *trails off*

*sighs and melts*

Tolerance is a cumbersom word in this context, it really does underwhelm the intention. Accept is better, but that has pretty much ben used to show agreement and approval, which isn't accurate either. Live and let live seems to be the best.

pretty much how I am
I am thinking people have mistaken my words to mean I never ever talk to someone that is not human, or does things that I do not

that is not the case...

I just do not go out of my way to strike up a conversation, however if the setting warrants it, then that is different

say for instance I am out shopping, for something specific, (to do with the stuff I make, being that is the only shopping I do these days) I usually do not speak to people, or go out of my way to say hi, after all, they are there for their own reasons too, and shopping (in my opinion and experience) is not really a social atmosphere unless shopping with friends...

now... if I happen to be at a show, or a bar, nightclub, dance, etc, where socializing does take place, then yes I will speak with folks, and not snub anyone, regardless of how they look.... do I expect to make friends? nope... I never expect to make friends... if it happens it happens

If I am projecting that and causing friendships to not happen, then so be it... I am still happy living my SL :)

(I get the feeling people think I just snub others, and ignore everyone, when that is not the case)

OK. Duly noted.

Your statements did come across that way to me Rha. I got the impression that you'd be like, "oh ew, there's a ___________, let me move over here." Not sure what it is in the way your stated your argument, but that's how it came across to me.

Sorry if I really did get it wrong. :)

your post is what made me realize that probably others were misinterpreting what I was saying (as I said I sometimes find it hard to put into words the thoughts in my head)

and usually the words all come out wrong...

I am not a snob, I do not do the oh eww there is a ________ let me move over here kind of thing... I just do not go out of my way to try to talk to everyone I see, and if that person is in an avatar form that says something about them that is something I particularly do not care for, chances of me making the first move to talk to them are extremely slim. I won't avoid them as in run the other way, I just won't bother them either... they do their thing I do mine. (again situation also makes a difference)

however if they do talk to me, I am not going to snub them and ignore them, I will talk, chat, discuss, etc with them.

the chances of us having things in common, from my experience, are slim to none...

As I stated, I am a loner, which I am sure also adds to my not making the first move persona...

But... but... how can you talk about this, and say that there's something weird about child avatars?

Yeah, it might seem a little screwy, but not as much as wanting to engage in sex with an avatar that looks like a 4yo kid.

People keep telling me you can pick those up in the Myspace/Facebook side-quest, but there's some things I'm just not ready for. I've gotten three of the five skill bonuses from Youtube, and a lolcat power-up, and I still crash and burn on the fansub levels.

Taking those points in reverse order, I read almost *everything* in RA (kinda sad, eh?) even the girly sales threads ("Know your enemy!";) and pointless 'bot arguments ("Morality" in commerce? It doesn't happen in rl, why should it in sl), but contrary to popular opinion, I don't feel the need to troll everyone I disagree with.

Having read this thread all the way through, the rest of you come across like the U.S. movie industry people. At the Academy Awards, they stand in front of the world and tell us all how much impact they have. Six weeks later, in front of a U.S. Congressional committee investigating violence, rape and worse in film, and they tell every one that they have no impact at all, its just movies...

If a 50 year old RL accountant in Austin, TX that wears three piece suits any day under 95 degrees wants to dress in torn clothes in SL and pretend to be a monosyllabic 20 year old jerk from Australia, fine. But to expect everyone he or she contacts to ignore the very impression they spend L$ 20,000 to create is disingenuous at best. If there is nothing behind the images you create, why do it?

In RL I'm a Druid who is a professional and has clients and I am careful who I talk openly with. They may be a Druid, other Pagan or a practitioner of the Craft, but it is more likely they are a conservative Baptist. On SL I am a shapeshifting Druid with both anthropomorphic and what is called feral avatars in SL (foxes - my parcel partners are wolves and dragons, last I checked). As a feral, I am mute, but only use it in RP AND my RP permits me to morph to the human Druid to have conversation. But if I spent all that time and L$ to create an image (or three), why in the Gods' names would I object if someone were to react to it? If I were a fiend from Hell, would I really want everyone to walk up to me and talk as if I looked like a printer repair tech from HP? (Feel free to discuss whether or not HP techs are fiends from Hell.)

BTW, having worked for years in the deep inner city and in jails, both professionally and as a volunteer, including three of the hardest prisons in the Baltimore-DC-Northern Virginia area (two of them closed or being closed, partly because of the level of violence), I think the idea that people should look past appearances and get to know the real person as really, really naive. In all too many places, that gets you dead or at least seriously inconvenienced, and to think that wouldn't carry over to SL is also IMO naive.

People want to RP as badasses, so be it. If you want to be a dragon, so be it. But just as you bring your perspective to why you want to be in that form or that skin or those clothes, the people that meet you also bring their perspective and/or experiences to the encounter. I haven't really meant an unprejudiced person yet - the issue is how functional or dysfunctional the prejudices are in the situation and how aware the person is of the prejudice. Yeah, I will say categorically that if a person says they are without prejudice that IMO they are without self perception - or expect the listener to be foolish enough to take them at their word. Speaking as someone that has walked city streets at 5 am to get to the city jail, where I was a distinct minority.

Okay, and YOU'RE telling ME I have to "ground" myself?

BUT - There's really nothing accurate about the "image" of media industry that you read in the papers. Its sweat, sweat, sweat and cold cups of coffee. And when you feel liek a bitch you gota look liek a million bucks. And I'm talking ALL media here.

Why do peopel come down on an industry - INDUSTRY! - that employs thousands and thousands of people at all levels and in all aspects with good unionized labour and benefits? And makes people happy? Think of all the jobs media - film, stage, TV, music, dance, art, publishing etc etc that is wrapped up in the whole package.

I don't think you're expressing the point you're making well, Cael, because the first part of your article doesn't paint the picture of someone who would assume that someone with a non-human avatar is using it to be a "badass".

There's as much variety in the style, appearance, attitude, and behavior among non-human avatars as among humans. Even among different subgroups: not all tinies are running around with waffle guns and shouting "hooooo".

As it turns out I dress and act like a printer repair tech from HP who happens (usually) to be a ferret. Which is really handy when clearing paper jams.
