Are some people really so stupid as to expect privacy in SL?

512 is what I have.

512 - no fly - my workspace is way above 500 feet.

There are numerous ways to bypass no fly.

Why is the first perception that someone has to be "hiding" something. So if I had ban lines around what is obviously my private home, you would just start camming and clicking on things? Not cool

Yes

Banlines encourage people to inquire. You create a nuisance that people become curious over.

No ban lines, less reason to be curious.

That's not so much me as it is general human nature. Banlines work against the grain of human nature - they increase curiosity. Not having banlines works with the grain of human nature - it makes people think there is nothing to ponder.

Human nature is curious, it seeks out an tries to explore the unkown.

If you want privacy, use psychology to your advantage, not to your disadvantage.

It is all fine and well to cry foul and stand up on your rights, but you will be fighting a constant battle for your rights unless you fight for them -within- the tools of human nature rather than against them.

Sure. But it prevents the accidental invasion. The intentional invader is best dealt with using individualized attention - an AR, mute, and personal ban.

It also allows me to know the difference between an accident or explorer and a stalker.

No, actually I had to leave work and drive home (which takes an hour +). When I got on line again I was astounded by the number of posts my thread had generated. It has taken me half an hour to read them all. I am so pleased that my Friday thread has given you all something to chat about.
I have taken on board all that has been said and duly noted your comments. I must point out that my main residence is on a private island that does not use ban lines because we see no need for them.

Ah. Well then, my characterization of you WAS actually discourteous, and I apologize. :)

Again, your opinion.

I take mighty offense to someone, clicking poseballs just because they can. Let me share something here, irl my home was broken into 3 times. People peering in the windows because the blinds were open. I guess because they felt they were entitled to do this because they can.

I did not come to sl to be victimized. I don't have a problem with someone being curious as you state it is human nature. To immediately think someone is "hiding something" is silly and IMHO an excuse to fullfill your curiousity. But I do have a problem when some uses their natural curiosity to take liberties and infringe on others.

It is my mine and the Lindens land to do as I see fit. You as well as others are welcome to contribute to the tier I pay for the priviledge (yes, I am using the word priviledge) to have access to my home and clicking all the friggin poseballs you want.

Pussycat - absence of ban lines does not prevent trespass, by camera or by avatar. Not everyone works via reverse psychology.

If obstacles increase curiosity and the one who put up a barrier is responsible for the wrong actions of others, then what about privacy in RL - or even cabinets with doors.

I've never peeped in anyone's medicine cabinet. Never wanted to, either.

Ie: if you put up banlines you become an "attractive nuisance" - people are offended and want to find out what is going on.

There's something to be learned from this choice of words. Legally, an "attractive nuisance" is something that specifically attracts children. You can decide for yourself whether that implies that camming into a house just because of ban lines is a childish reaction.

Bullshit.

A parcel in SL with banlines is not some great unknown. You can see what is there already. Same goes with a fence and a gate in RL. They are there for a reason whether you agree with it or not. Crossing them is not satisfying some thirst to find the unknown. It is simply a childish act of defiance and disregard for other people. It is tresspassing.

But Sable...this is not RL. If there is ANYTHING that I could say to you in a sensitive way to tell you that you do not have to be a victim here, and that you can shed that feeling when you log in....I wish I could phrase it properly to do so.

A person camming is not trying to harm you. It is not at that level.

Banlines are a sign that the owner of the parcel doesn't want you in there, why not just respect their wishes?

I can understand why people flying get annoyed, but there's no right to roam on other people's land in SL. We've already had nonsense on the adult content issue where the right to be a nosey parker has been defended and given as a reason why Zindra had to be built in the first place.

Playing into human nature is a winning strategy. Playing against human nature fails.

It doesn't matter what is right or wrong. You can't stand up for what is right an expect people to just go along. You can demand people respect your wishes all you want, it won't make it so.

You need to wrap what is right inside of what is instinctive.

Ban lines don't bother me so much when flying about except sometimes when for some odd reason or angle I can't see them in order to figure out how to get around them.......and the sims where every other parcel have them all diagonal to each other just drive me mad with fustration

Mickey I agree with you on that. I know camming isn't harmful to me. I do find it irritating that someone is in my home regardless what life I'm in. I take great offense to a poster's comment that in addition to camming she clicks poseballs too. C'mon......that is too much.

Also I am paying real money to be in a world that is not rl. So to me to a certain extent it is real.

I don't feel victimized when I log in. However, I won't be especially by someone who is going around willy nillying clicking poseballs that they did not shed not one G-DAMN linden to have that right. In my home I return the poseballs on that piece of furniture in its original state. Meaning, I don't have poseballs just out all over the place. When I come home, I expect to be as I left it.

I am curious whether those who peep into parcels do the same when visiting or house sitting in real life.

To me that is ooky. Finding one's dresser has been rummaged, or cabinets gone through. Nothing taken - just rummaged around. Then the reason is something like, "I can't help it...I'm just so curious." lol

Why do they do this?

Because she pays for it and that is the only damn reason she needs. But if you feel the need to visit her land, even just to fly over, why not slip her a few thousand L$ a month to help pay her tier?

OK - Sable and Clarissa....I tried wording a response to you, but it kept coming out wrong. It came out wrong, just as this response came out wrong to me:

I had no idea that my exploration (or others' exploration) of SL had that effect on people. Wow is all I can say. And I'm sorry. I wish you could understand that people who explore are not all out to get you.

I wish you'd stop painting us as loonies, Mickey. Our responses are every bit as valid as your own. I've tried to explain that some people's skins are thinner than other people's and all sorts of other possible explanations why it isn't okay with everyone, if strangers walk in unannounced and make themselves t'home. Some welcome this - you've said you do - fine. But some don't. It seems simple to me.

What puzzles me is that you see trespassing as a right, and feel someone is doing something negative to you when they are merely protecting their purchase, in their own eyes.

There are parcels which are public, or communally held, but people also have a right to designate some of their land as private. As I said, at this point in SL I have a bit of a different outlook than I did when I was coming off a rental where people walked in on me while I was dressing, and harassed me and so forth. (As I said, briefly - none of my property has a ban line, now.)

I know you see it all as virtual and not connected to real feelings but not everyone experiences SL in that way. I don't know why you think I am paranoid, though. I thought I explained myself better than that.

I did not mean the post about rummaging through RL drawers as an insult. It is the same exact reason given in SL and RL so I wondered if there was a corollary.

NO, I do not claim to have set out to start a "Friday Thread" and do not consider I got spanked. My question has been answered and I appreciate the opinions of those that have contributed. It is the other posters who have digressed off the topic who have turned this into a “Friday Thread” and I am pleased to see that I have inadvertently triggered a debate.

Some of us enjoy a spirited discussion Del that is all it is.

People forget about it in world and in other threads, even.

Where and when!?

"Out to get you" paints a picture of paranoids, and I don't see anyone here as being paranoid . Isn't that strongly worded and a big assumption?

And that "they" includes you, obviously. Just because you can do something , even if it is instinctive, which I still think is a cop out in this case,it doesn't mean you have to do it. As Ciaran said, people have made it clear using the various tools provided they want to be left alone. It doesn't matter what their reason is. Leave them alone.
