Are some people really so stupid as to expect privacy in SL?

From: Mickey Vandeverre I take a wee bit of offense having the "is this Friday" above my name. I'm sure you didn't mean it that way. I didn't. From: someone So you are suggesting that I stop riding the horse to accommodate those with privacy issues? Never said that at all. But if you run into a ban line just realise it's because someone else owns the land. I'd love to 'explore' a lot of places in the world but doing so could get me jail time, so I don't. lol

From: Brenda Connolly Oh don't go there, or we will get onto the "tolerance vs acceptance" track. Yes, I had the same thought ... and consider myself very "compassionate" for not having taken the (unintended) bait.

I use TP's very rarely when exploring. I either walk, or fly my helicopter. When walking I will cross peoples property as I pass, maybe stop and admire their house from the outside, and move on. If I encounter a banline, I may still stop and look at the build from that distance. I consider a ban line a fence. I wouldn't clinb someone's fence uninvited in RL. Same thing. Again, I may not see the need to restrict access to the area, but why they do is none of my business.

I respect your opinion on the matter and admire you for the way you stated it. I have to go now, I've been promising my dog I would take him to the park for over an hour. To make him wait any longer would be inconsiderate

But see...to me....that's the Joy of SL and what it has to offer. Once I found out that not everyone considered it that way....quite a bit of enjoyment and exploration was taken away. I don't think that my exploring hurt anyone....was careful not to do that. I rarely explore anymore, because of things mentioned in this thread, and I can't afford to be taken the wrong way and AR'd for riding my horse through a residential section, or camming in to see what their tastes in decorating are (in order to maintain business)....not to mention a dozen other things that I have since found to be totally unacceptable, that were basically innocent and non-harmful means of exploration. And that's kind of a Huge Bummer. Considering what SL could be.

It's unfortunate you hit that 'wall' so to speak in the visual analogy of the ban lines. Probably orbs, too. (At least ban lines don't send you home.) I doubt your riding a horse across the sims hurt anyone, either. My intention was merely to explain my view as to why some would put up barriers.

And that's kind of a Huge Bummer. Considering what SL could be. Well, in theory, I agree. But part of the problem is the structural model that SL employs: "ownership" and "property" are very much built into the free market economy that underwrites (among other things) the power structures here. Which is of COURSE, just as it should be. Anything else would be . . . COMMUNISM!!!

From: Clarissa Lowell What's a Lada? LOL. Yeah, I suppose they probably didn't make it to the States. A Lada is a Russian-made car. Sometime in the 70s, I think, they started to appear in Canada. They were cheap, boxy, and had an electrical system that would break down if the light bulb in the glove compartment burnt out. But they DID handle the cold pretty well, generally. My dad bought one at one point: I think he sort of wanted to scandalize our suburban neighbours. They never REALLY caught on here, and I haven't seen one on the streets in ages. As you can see, however, there is LOTS of room for passengers. So long as they are square shaped ...

Compared to today's cars, that one is kinda cute! Just... not loving the orange. Does it come in a harvest gold?

Except HIS didn't have the sporty stripes. Not proletarian enough with them, I suppose. The other thing about them was a general lack of decent suspension system. I have very vivid memories as a kid (before seat belts were mandatory, I guess) being bounced around in the back seat like a kidney bean in a maraca.

From: Clarissa Lowell It's autumn red on my browser. *grins* The one beyond it is red to me. This one is more of a.. redish-orange, but it looks more orange than red, so I default to that. *chuckles at Scylla* Yeah, I kinda remember those days. Seat belts were a suggestion, not a requirement and dashboards were more often than not metal. I didn't want to sit in the front seat as a kid. And my mom was THRILLED when we finally got a car with seat belts.

Seat belts? Meh. Mom's car had a door that swung open around turns. She hung onto me by my dress!
A later car had a luggage well in the back, and we rode in it (the kids.) The straps for hanging dry cleaning were our subway straps.
Never happen today but it was fun.

From: Argent Stonecutter I don't see any difference between someone doing that, and someone camming in and IM-ing me when I'm inside my house. If anything, that's creepier, and you can't stop it by ejecting and banning him individually.
Nope, wrong tools. I'd click PROFILE button on the IM without answering, and MUTE on the profile. I dont care if they look.

From: Raudf Fox Seriously, all I need the lines for is to keep people from getting between my camera and what I'm building.
Your way sounds great for a bigger plot. But in this case, having a single 512m of land set to no fly just seems a bit more rude than the ban lines. At least to me, it does. 512 is what I have. 512 - no fly - my workspace is way above 500 feet. No one is blocked from moving around, no ugly eyesore or slamming walls at ground. And I have freedom to work undisturbed. If I need to have my workshop and some active content visible to each other, I just move the workshop -up- or -down-. My workshop after all, is just a single megaprim matching the dimensions of my parcel (so I can be sure I'm never building in anyone else's land), with a teleport pad on one end. How do you manage to have a shop and banlines in the same parcel? Or do you have a second parcel to the side, as I do (which allows me to put my workspace to the same height as my cafe or my (under construction) shop).

/me waves goodbye to Del ... No, actually I had to leave work and drive home (which takes an hour +). When I got on line again I was astounded by the number of posts my thread had generated. It has taken me half an hour to read them all. I am so pleased that my Friday thread has given you all something to chat about. I have taken on board all that has been said and duly noted your comments. I must point out that my main residence is on a private island that does not use ban lines because we see no need for them.
