From: Burnman Bedlam The fact that some people are irritated by "baby talk" in SL should not be of any surprise to anyone. Especially when (as with all things) the number of people who are "good at it" are relatively few compared to the overall number of participants. I can also see how irritating baby speak can also push someone's lack of appreciation of child-avs along.
My point is it is insignificant next to the number of people in adult avatars who already type horribly. I am positive the number of typers of text speech and other text impediments dwarf the number of all child avatars (of any text method) on the grid. Its like being annoyed with kid avs because they wear blue jeans. So what? tons of people do.

From: Colette Meiji My point is it is insignificant next to the number of people in adult avatars who already type horribly. Bad spelling or broken english don't bother me any where nearly as much as "baby talk" does, so I suppose that I am happy the number of people using baby talk is small in comparison. From: Colette Meiji I am positive the number of typers of text speech and other text impediments dwarf the number of all child avatars (of any text method) on the grid. Absolutely... child-av's are a definite minority in SL. From: Colette Meiji Its like being annoyed with kid avs because they wear blue jeans. So what? tons of people do. No, not really. Pants don't baby talk. But it's no big deal... I just use the mute feature. That's my point... it matters less to me because I can turn you off if you are doing it.

From: Colette Meiji My point is it is insignificant next to the number of people in adult avatars who already type horribly. That's why I'm saying it's the attitude, not the behaviour. People who type horribly do so because they're simply lazy, or uncoordinated, or similar. But child avatars who baby talk do so actively and deliberately, apparently because they want to play their role and don't care what anyone else thinks about it. That might seem like an OK attitude at first, but in fact it's not, because if _everyone_ acts that way you get chaos and people are driven apart. It's asking for special treatment, special attention, to be given to you and that's always kind of rude. If the cyberpunk over there isn't getting treated like a cyberpunk, why should you be treated like a child?

You used "child-av's" instead of child avatars, and you used "typle" instead of type. And then you ended your next to last sentence with dots. If you want to use ". . .", you can, but you need to end a sentence by tacking a fourth dot on the end, as shown here: "The wind blew strongly and all the sheep huddled together in fear, just then a giant ball of fire appeared and headed straight for the sheep. To be continued . . .."

Ive seen about 6 child Avs in my entirity of my SL experience. I couldn't possibly count the number of people who type in some form of text/leet speak. You are either hanging around with a lot of kid avs, or you aren't meeting many adults.

From: Colette Meiji You need to get out more. I get out plenty... I love to explore. I often fly around the various mainland sims in a blimp looking for interesting things to do or see. I meet a lot of people, as I am generally very social. From: Colette Meiji Ive seen about 6 child Avs in my entirity of my SL experience. Maybe you need to get out more... lol From: Colette Meiji I couldn't possibly count the number of people who type in some form of text/leet speak. Maybe it's the areas you frequent, or the type of people you attract... but I don't have that sort of problem most of the time. From: Colette Meiji You are either hanging around with a lot of kid avs, or you aren't meeting many adults. I think it's pretty obvious I don't really hang around with child-av's. I suppose we just move in different circles. I can't say I envy yours, if the majority of the people you speak to type like children or idiots.

I've only ever met.. I think 4 child avatars, one being my sisters son (he's so cute o.o) and the rest just met wandering around.. I'd say the reason I haven't met many though is mostly cause I don't get out much... I spend the majority of my time on my land or my Mistresses (I went out with a friend to a club the other night though.. it was awesome =P)

Dat's what I'm not getting: how does how *I* speak affect what you do at any time? To paraphrase an old term, my rights end where your nose begins: I cannot tell you how to act at all. If you don't like someone speaking in 'ikklespeak' (I'm making up a new term here), then you have several options. 1. tell them to speak in plain English, because you can't understand them. 2. mute 3. walk away 4. try to parse it Easy peasy. For that matter, some of the *best* crowds I have been in have been this "chaos" you speak of. In my early SL days, at the old Phoenix Spa's storytimes, you had elves (high and drow), kids (one modern, one from Caledon), vampires, some other critters (including one tentacled.. thing that I dunno what it was), and yes, soem good ol' fashioned human adults of no particular affectation. Most remained at least within some semblance of character, and the group had no chaos, and was not at all driven apart. My own character developed out of these to some extent, from challenging myself to do a story time fully in character. It was *great* fun for all. So how again do my actions force you to do anything? This is the part I dun get. Mari

From: Burnman Bedlam stuff Ohh give me a break. Ive been here for over 2 and a half years. Ive met a lot of people. I never said the majority of adults talk that way. I said that far more adults talk that way than there are Child Av's in existance. If 1 in 20 adults talk that way what I said would be true, because far less than 1 in 20 players is a Child Av.

From: Colette Meiji Ohh give me a break. Are you going to give one? From: Colette Meiji Ive been here for over 2 and a half years. Ive met a lot of people. Which you have implied are mainly idiots. From: Colette Meiji I never said the majority of adults talk that way. I said that far more adults talk that way than there are Child Av's in existance. In the multitude of posts you made, you implied that there are a HUGE number of people who type like idiots... at least in comparison to my experiences. I agreed with you on the "more adults talking like idiots than child-av's". It seems, from what you have been saying, that you meet a lot of people who use leet speak, or type poorly. I don't seem to get that as much... never have.

I'd say the reason I haven't met many though is mostly cause I don't get out much... Actually, you'll find that many child avatars are the ones who don't' get out much. I am a slight exception to the rule, being prone to exploring, but even I fit the model. 1. Many will stay at home with their families, or go with their inworld parents on those non-adult places their parents might feel like going to. It's part of the role, of course, for those involved with families -- plus a lot of the same jes plain *like* being with their inworld parents. 2. Sunshine Elementary and Camp HardKnock are locations where a lot of child acatars are for large blocks of time; many also stick to child/family owned or child/family friend sims (Little Paradise, Livingtree. Tu Amor, Famiglia Hideaway, Nemo Beach, Camp Kawabata, Starlight Starbright, most of Fletcher, etc.). These places tend to be a bit more fun for us kids, an often a bit more vigilant on griefing of us. As a result, you dun often see a lotta us "in the wild" -- and, for better or worse, many dat you might see out there are prob'ly purty new to kid-dom. Mari

Otherwise, we'd all have to learn several varieties of broken English to communicate with all the nationalities we meet. Also the times when I've met kids and we've had a conversation, they have been very friendly and polite, which cannot be said for all adults around. Also, just occurred to me, if I spend time with a furry, that doesn't mean I have to growl or meow does it? /me applauds Mari for remaining so unbelievably patient, time and time and time again! Oh and I voted too...... score's way up there woohoo! Heh, a particular trait of mine finally makes sense. I will go through periods where I just can't stop moving, bursts of energy running no where for little reason, and then periods when I don't want to move. I hadn't thought to connect that to my inclusion of cat ears/tail/sometimes full cat body to my avatar. Ending a sentence with . . .. is something I picked up along the way. I looked into it on-line but I cannot figure out if this is correct or not. {edited in the note: I meow, purr, hiss, etc., which is why I originally clicked "quote" instead of "post", and then forgot to mention that in my section of the post}

Waaay back when when I was a forum host on a large internet service who's name acronym ended with an "L," A chat mentor of mines taught me one of my most important lessons for communicating online: smile from the wrists down. I might grumble an grouse behind the keyboard, but I try to keep it from going beyond the wrists. Sides, I might not agree with a person's opinion, an I might wish to try to change it, but it is still theres. To them it is as legitimate as my own is to me. From: someone Oh and I voted too...... score's way up there woohoo! I know - skery! Mari (Who used so much 'marispeak' in the above dat Burnman prob'ly advance muted me. j/k)

Tiny as mentioned pretty much describes the smaller than normal, or even chibi style avatars available out there. Children/Kids are designed to look younger in appearance and usually have the information in their profiles.
And the definition of tiny and child kind of blurs amongst the furry avatars. There are some adult avatars that most may think of as childish due to size and shape, and some that are child style (There are some of the feline avatars fall into the small end and seen as children. And there are short super cute ones used by many as their adult avatar)
But the thing is, instant messages are a good way to make sure of what their age in character is, and to let them know you don't want to be involved in any of their role-play.
As for the speaking in character on the forums, it happens and gives a bit of perspective to things. A hardcore role-player does keep up the mannerisms in the forums, because it is still under the character's name.
As for restricting child avatars, I would say do it by venue not by the sim rating. A night club, of course should prohibit child style avatars. There are clubs with adult themes for the furry community that tend to frown on certain styles of avatars up on stage due to the possibility of them being mistaken for inappropriate avatars for adult situations (they don't mind them on the dance floor, just not on stage). A dance club could still have the young adult avatars show up and dance, if it was a pg style club regardless of the sim rating (there are some clubs that do that to keep the youngsters out of trouble and all that)
And as one who only uses furry avatars, there is always going to be problems with choices in how we play in this open world. I try not to let it bother me, but it does get aggravating when you get rude messages or griefers. I don't go to areas where I know a furry avatar is wrong, after all it would make me as much of a griefer to many innocents if I went to one of the many Gor sims as an anthropomorphic animal as the griefers that do particle spam at the various furry areas. I think the best policy is simply to live and let live here in second life, many of the things that are illegal or looked down on in one area may be considered fine in others...but if it bothers you then a calm polite instant message to them might just solve it. After all in one household it's fine for everyone to curse and in the next door household that is a good way to get punished. If anything second life should be most about open mindedness that is sorely lacking in first life.

Things aren't as simple as, either you want to do them, or you don't. There's always a mixture. From: someone See, I dun even follow what yer sayin' here, or why it's a bad ting. Well, would you normally talk to your RL friends using a strange, artifically put-on dialect (not the same as your natural accent or dialect), just to show them how different from them you are?
