From: Kidd Krasner I believe the debate in this thread got triggered by this post, which contains a perfectly reasonable answer to the original terminology, followed by an utterly gratuitous opinion. Certainly this person is entitled to such an opinion, and as far as I can tell, the people defending child-avs agree. If someone had actually asked how people feel about child-avs, it would have been a perfectly reasonable response (though whether the question is appropriate for this forum is a different story). The problem is when people feel a desire to express a negative opinion that is at best tangential to the thread. It's the type of thing that people often do, it's understandable and forgiveable that they do it, but it's also the type of thing that should be discouraged for the simple reason that we always run around in circles when that happens. I suggest that the next time someone asks a factual question about child-avs (or furries or Gor or other BDSM or whatever), that the question be answered without opinions being thrown in simply because it seems opportune. Well thought out answer and exactly what happened. The OP's questions was answered very well until the additional remarks were made, well known remarks.

Thank you for the clarification. Though if you take your research a step further and search for silly laws and frivolous lawsuits... you will find plenty more to counter this one. From: Kidd Krasner Don't underestimate the ability of otherwise intelligent people to not only believe nonsense, but to pass it on as truth without doing a simple one minute search with Google that would have proved otherwise. Thank you for the personal attack, I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone was going to move away from discussion and into argument.

From: Brenda Connolly Sorry Kidd, I beat you to it....... I thought that might be the case, but I don't actually see a link in your post. I don't know if it's my browser, the forum software, or an oversight, not that it hurts to have two posts.

From: Imogen Saltair Call me a cynic (*puts hands over her ears as a chorus of shouts of "cynic" deafens her for a moment) but i don't believe anything i read on Google necessarily, be it legend or denial of legend. Just because someone wrote on Google that this urban myth is not true, doesn't mean it isn't. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.
imogen I did some further digging on this one. Evidently it is an Internet urban legend that even fooled a couple of actual reporters.

Yes... plenty of remarks were made... I read some of the remarks made today which did nothing but offer sarcasm or insult. I've been trying to legitimately discuss the issue, and as a result, have been subjected to the sort of behavior which people are objecting to. Too bad, I was hoping that this could have remained a discussion rather than an argument.

I keep coming back to this non-ending debate on the same issue just to see if the original thread ever actually got restarted.

From: Kidd Krasner First, Google is the search engine. The only thing you can actually read on Google are help documents, descriptions of their technology, corporate information, etc. To discredit something because it was found by a Google search is ludicrous.
This particular article is on Snopes. Snopes has been around for years, and is a highly respected source specilizing in refuting urban legend. You're still free to choose not to believe them, but you should at least put a smidgin of effort to determine who it is you're disbelieving before doing so. OK Point taken; for 'Google' read 'Internet' or 'Web' or any other term you wish to employ. I am aware that Google finds documents. I am not discrediting 'anything found by a Google Search'. I am saying that i don't know Snopes from a hole in the ground and why should i believe what i read there over what i read anywhere else? If you say it is a highly respected source i am willing to take your word as one recommendation, since i had no recommendation previously. I treat all information gleaned from the net in the same way, unless i know of a reason why i should treat any with more importance than another. If it's important enough to me, I will make my 'smidgen of effort' to corroborate it. However, this was a lighthearted post, as perhaps the last sentence might have told you. have a nice day imogen --------------->

From: Colette Meiji I was using your quotes to discuss the topic. I was not accusing you of being a rabid anti child av type person. I do not think Burnman is a radical anti child av person and hope those reading this thread will understand that. I less meant to generalize Burnman than to generalize a situation that exists. I appreciate that... it seemed that was the road we were going down, and I really am not anti-child-av. Simply because I think it's odd, doesn't mean I hate it. I just don't understand it, much like people who think my joy of Second Life is strange or odd. I am sorry if it came across as more intense than that... I was trying to discuss the issue from multiple points to better understand it. From: Colette Meiji I have a serious problem with the ammunition thats been handed to ANYONE who wants to AR a Child Av. A Child Av by application of policy has LESS rights than any other player. This is a serious issue. We should all be free from unjust accusations. I agree... you should be free from unjust accusations, and unfortunately, some people gave the whole child-av thing a bad rap. While I don't automatically assume the worst, some do as a result of the behavior of a few sicko's. I can understand the frustration a lot of people in this thread have over the issue... and I really was trying to understand both sides of the coin here. It's been difficult with some of the remarks made by some of the posters here, but I appreciate your input and the clarification that you don't think I am trying to rid the world of child-av's.

From: Burnman Bedlam Thank you for the clarification. Though if you take your research a step further and search for silly laws and frivolous lawsuits... you will find plenty more to counter this one. Thank you for the personal attack, I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone was going to move away from discussion and into argument. Please don't take it personally. It was a generalization, just as your statement was, using wording parallel to yours for effect. It's a bit closer to home because people do it here rather than at courthouses, and in particular, you did. That means it's a problem that can and should be addressed here. If you have a better way to convince people that they shouldn't pass along urban legends, or that they should put an extra few minutes into research before posting, please do so. Nevertheless, people who pass along urban legends stand a good chance of being corrected, and being embarrassed when that happens. As for your comment about the frivilous lawsuits, take it even one more step. The best known example is the McDonald's coffee case. Often omitted from the reporting is the point that McDonald's was serving their coffee at a temperature significantly higher than other drive-thru restaurants. The Stella Awards people, at http://www.stellaawards.com/, seem to be doing a decent job of presenting both sides. Sure, frivolous lawsuits get filed all the time. The overwhelming majority get tossed out quickly. Some get past the first step, usually because the law - not unreasonably - chooses to err on the side of allowing people to make their case, even if it's a weak one. But at this point, the whole argument becomes a red herring. Just because frivolous lawsuits get filed is not a justification to say that child-avs in an adult situation could result in someone being arrested. Which is not to say there aren't legitimate arguments, nor that the fears are totally unjustified. But there needs to be a rational limit on the "it might be illegal in Pottsylvania" argument."

From: Colette Meiji That sounds like an urban legend. In fact in the version I heard it was a man and he died while making a sandwich on cruise control. No lawsuit was involved in that version of the story. http://www.vamedmal.com/library/Debunking_ Urban_Legends_About_the_Civil_Justice_System.pdf From: someone You may have received an e-mail that contains this unbelievable story: A man sets his Winnebago motor home on cruise control and gets up to make a cup of coffee in the moving vehicle. It crashes. He sues the manufacturer for failing to tell him to stay in the driver's seat. A jury awards him $1.75 million and a new motor home, and the company changes its handbook.
There's a simple reason this story sounds unbelievable. IT'S PHONY. THE CASE NEVER HAPPENED. It's fabricated and so are six other "lawsuits" summarized in the same e-mail, which has been widely circulated in various forms on the Internet over the last few years.

Mari Yes that was what I was asking in the first place. I still want to babysit, and I belive in santa, and when free, I shall ask Mari more, in world. But lets talk about adoptions, hey and what about adoptions of tinys?

Is there a SL Humane Society where abandoned tinies, nekos, dragons, etc. can be adopted or are they all put to sleep?

From: Jezabell Barbosa Yes that was what I was asking in the first place. I still want to babysit, and I belive in santa, and when free, I shall ask Mari more, in world. Cool I suspect there are folks in a couple sims who might be able to help with dat, or at least owuld want some help in some fashions. Camp HardKnock is running right now, else I'd suggest you as a camp counselor (they might still need a hand for all I know) an the person in charge of it could be a big resource for you. Ditto for the folks at Gateway (I mention it below) or at Sunshine Elementary. 'course, the best bet is to be a baby sitter for any of your inworld friends who might have kids. From: someone But lets talk about adoptions, hey and what about adoptions of tinys? There are several adoption agencies inworld, some are better than others. My own experience with 'em is limited, cuz I was not adopted through an agency: I was found by my mommy when I visited her land, which was also where my cousin (A RL friend) happened to live at the time. I seem to recall that one of the especially good ones is called Gateway or something like it, an is in Famiglia Hideaway. I doubt many tinies would allow themseves to be adopted. I do know of one place (in Tu Amor) that is taking the adoption concept a step further, into family pets. From what little I saw of it, it focused on real-looking dog and cat types, not furry, tiny, etc. Mari

Someone posted in these forums once who RP'ed a bunny rabbit, and lived in a burrow kindly allowed on someone else's parklike sim. Might be more of that kind of thing going on than we suspect. I mean, if I were a sim-owning person with natural settings, I think I would like bunnies and foxes and such inhabiting the place - up to a point.

From: Sally Silvera You know, was gonna stay out of this, but... I was at a music gig the other night and was surrounded by the wildest variety of creatures I've ever seen in a single venue. From tinies, furries, a dragon, a dark elf, a wide range of humans in various guises, including a couple of very sweet little girls (one of whom also gave me a very cool bubble wand . The next day, i was given a grand tour of Serenity Woods by a now furry friend and was astounded by the beauty of it, and very sad to learn it is apparently under threat I went to Marianne's art show and was very moved by it. I recently ran into the cutest little rabbit and we had a laugh together. All this sums up the beautiful variety of our wonderous world. If that changed, I'd miss it. I'm with you. I love a mix. Do most people just stay as one type of AV? I couldn't do that..I love being a dragon or Tiny (black cat) at different times...sometimes I'm even blonde!

Glad ta see the conversation got back on track. Not much more ta say from me other than "Hi Marianne!".
As a fairly new child Av, I've been debating th' adoption thingie, but so far, I thinks I'll jus be another orphan runnin' around the grid. Plus, I get ta stay up waaay past my bedtime.
The limitations on the avatar mesh wuz one reason I decided to be 11 years old. I tried younger, but it just dint look right.
Annnnywayyyy, if ya want to "babysit" me, better be in good shape. In one evening a couple nights ago, two of my friends and I went horseback ridin', divin', slidin' and swimmin' at AKK, surfin' and mountain bike ridin' at The Weather Channel sims (mature, BTW), an' then over to Livingtree to play in th' mud, slide on the water slide an' kick up the leaf piles (Mizz Robin's gonna be mad, I know).

But it's all full up on registration right nows, an while you can peek in, the area is all red taped off to prevent griefers an stuff. Mari

I met a mother the other day who was shopping for her daughter. I was looking for a new dress for a friend's wedding. I'm a faerie, but my age is the equivalent of a 2yo human (I'm 260 years old) except that I can obviously speak better having had so long to learn.
I got along famously with the mother, and she even invited me to be a playmate for her daughter. I'm sooo excited.*claps her hands and giggles.*
And those 'faeries' someone mentioned before.. they're NOT faeries... they're just tall humans with wings slapped on, pretending to be faeries. Me? I'm 3'9 and proud of it!
