From: Burnman Bedlam When I said that SL is not a place for children, I meant it isn't a place for children. There is an 18+ requirement to access SL. The fact that it is a place for adults to interact, some may see child-av's as out of place.
Ah, I understand now and I agree.

From: Burnman Bedlam If you want to recommend seeking help, you might want to start with those who use child-av's to role play child molestation first. Perhaps if you get those people off the grid, people who RP children innocently won't have such a bad rap. There are already groups dat focus on dat. I've been known to AR a few myself, or add 'em to my ban list in those places I have access to same. Usually, though, I'd rather *not* hafta play SL cop, an would rather jes have fun. To be honest, I would hope dat me an kids like me would lead by example, an show dat for the vast majority of those playin' kids on SL, it's all about jes bein' a kid. (I wish I coulda gotten more folks to the art show, ya know? Jes for dat reason. Oh well, I still gots the show book in my store!) It makes me kinda sad dat I disturb or scare people, ya know? For me, it jes dun make sense. I bet I'm not alone amongst SL kids, too. Also, like I said before, I'm far far more disturbed by the adult avvies who try to pick up on kid avvies of all sorts. Those are the ones I would much more want off of my property! From: Lindal Kidd It doesn't really matter that the person "driving" the kid is an adult...it's the attitude that's important. I envy those who can get back in touch with what is was really like to be a kid. They bring something special to the world. Thankoo! Dat's a really smart paragraph! From: someone For a lot of them, being a kid means having parents. Not everyone is cut out to be Peter Pan...some want that sense of security, the safe haven that's Mom and Dad. So, families make sense, too. Having my folks kinda grounds me. They provide me suppot, an love (the type dat ain't "broadly offensive!" , an a togetherness. Plus I like 'em as jes peoples, too. From: someone The only ones I don't like are the Brats. You know who I mean...the people who play a child avatar in the most annoying way possible. Insane laughter, wild behavior, rude gestures repeated over and over. Most of them are hoping to provoke you into an unwise reaction, and will AR you in a second. I've been lucky to not come across too many. The ones dat bug me more is the ones dat 'spect people to give em money an stuff, 'specially if they're 'dopted. I enjoy gifts an stuff as much as the next person, but I never hold my hand out an expect it. Dat's rude no matter what. From: someone I guess I'd feel weird if I met someone who was playing an infant. But that seems so very limited. All the SL kids I've met have been between about 5 and 12 in apparent age. I started by playin at age 3, an am now five years old. 5-12 seems purty common from what I seen too. I do recall meeting a mommy an baby avvie once in Walden, an it was jes wonderful. They both "played their part" perfectly natural, an it was quite touching. Mari

You know, was gonna stay out of this, but... I was at a music gig the other night and was surrounded by the wildest variety of creatures I've ever seen in a single venue. From tinies, furries, a dragon, a dark elf, a wide range of humans in various guises, including a couple of very sweet little girls (one of whom also gave me a very cool bubble wand . The next day, i was given a grand tour of Serenity Woods by a now furry friend and was astounded by the beauty of it, and very sad to learn it is apparently under threat I went to Marianne's art show and was very moved by it. I recently ran into the cutest little rabbit and we had a laugh together. All this sums up the beautiful variety of our wonderous world. If that changed, I'd miss it.

Then equally, since SL is a place for adult humans to interact, avatars resembling animals, robots, monsters, etc are out of place as well. I remain of the opinion that if someone sees RPing a vampire as quite OK, but RPing a child as morally wrong, then that person is, ah, how shall I put this politely? ... a little confused.

I am sorry I missed it Mari... just been to distracted. I did see the notice. I am sorry not a lot showed up. It does bug me that others find my child self disturbing sometimes even if I am not talking or being naughty cigar smoking baby wondering and being up to no good. But I do understand it is adult themed world and people assume that everything is either about what gets one off, etc. I don't need to be a baby to enjoy SL, tiny yes but not a baby. I prefer seeing the world as small tiny guy it just feels comfortable. For me it has nothing to do with anything improper or AR-able behavior. I might have off colored adult humor regardless of my avatar but thats as adult as I get. My primary focus is friendship, creating, being creative and when I take out my child avatar its usually because I am tired of being a grown up and I want to be silly and make fun of all that adult stuff. My child and often rl self really often finds all the focus on sex really stupid and silly like saying the word "Poop" It more about getting in touch with that period of my life where I didn't hang on to all lives boo-boos and things were simple, fun and hadn't been corrupted yet by all those things that happen by the time we reach are adult or mid life years. I have been into different things in my rl, I am not prude but I am really not into roleplaying fetish like stuff. I am just me but I change how I look often some days I am even a big person.

That's why I returned to SL after about a year. From: Lindal Kidd 2. The remaining child players *don't* have a bad rep...except maybe in the mind of someone who always assumes the worst. Anyone who accepts something without questions is a moron. With the history of child-av's being used for simulated child rape by some, it will take some time for that association to go away.

Geez, I just wanted to babysit one. But maybe a single, reformed catholic school girl who is far over the age of 21 but has an addiction to plaid, and works as an escort is not a suitable babysitter. I had fun with the kid avi, it was great and she was cute.

I avoid children in Real Life - I avoid children in Second Life. Whatever turns your crank I guess is up to you BUT I dont like iit when people say "Pway wid me" or "Are U my Mommy?" - In real such a child would be regarded as at least requiring being given street smarts by parents.

In answer to the OP, a "tiny av" usually means an avatar that actually overrides the normal way of drawing an avatar in order to make the avatar smaller. Typically, the way they work is that your actual human avatar (which _must_ always be there, somewhere) is made to run an animation which wraps it up into a tiny little ball, and then a number of prims are attached to that tiny little ball which cover up the ball itself and create a new body for you out of the prims. There are prim avatars which aren't tiny too, but "tinies" usually specifically refers to prim avatars that are smaller than the real one; as opposed to "children" who usually just use the regular human av but set it to a smaller size (although I have seen some exception - I'm sure I've even seen a child av made entirely out of sculpties)
As for the acceptance of child avs, that's been covered before. Basically: a) some people are paranoid about child avs and sex. Their point of view might well be wrong, and it is rather unfair, but the rules of SL are at the moment that if it's their land they have the right to be wrong and unfair on it. b) you never have the right to force anyone else to role-play on your terms. In that sense, a child av running up to a random av and saying "are you my daddy?" is not really any different to a dragon going up to them and threatening to breathe fire on them, or a spaceman asking directions back to the moon - it's fun, but if the other person doesn't want to join in, that's their choice and you should respect it. Most people on SL assume that your character is the real you - the one sitting at the keyboard - in fancy dress; and, believe it or not, that's what the word "avatar" actually _means_.

I think some people feel entitled to acceptance, and when they only get tolerance, they feel as though they are being picked on.

I could run around saying..... it could happen so its logical it does happen so its logical that SL is a pit of that which it does happen. I personally could care less if Im accepted by anyone that has preconcieved notions about who I am. Their acceptance would not be wanted. I am never 'picked on' I will however speak up when certain persons typecast others.

I had my first experience with a "tiny" when we were opening our market - this little person all kitted out in formal Japanese attire was standing at the doorway. I went to her, bowed and invited her in. She most certainly wasn't a child - you only had to look at her to see that. She didn't act like a child either, she was a small well-proportioned human.
I still have this image of her in my mind - her english wasn't very good (I think she is japanese), and my japanese is non-existant, but I thought it was a real style statement that I admired.
I really wish she would visit us again so that I could spend more time with her. Trouble is, I don't even remember her name.
As for the other issues, I think people have the avies that they want in SL, and more power to them. people playing kids doesn't creep me out in the least - a lot of people wish they could have their childhoods back, and this is one way to do that.

I can understand why it is frustrating to be looked at as odd, but that's life. Some people are into Gor, some people are into furries, some people are into age play. And for each person that accepts you, there are three who think your a freak. For me, personally, I think child-av's are odd. I don't understand why an adult would want to RP a child, but I wouldn't go so far as to say I am disturbed about them all. That depends on the behavior seen. But the simply fact is... alternative choices will always receive criticism... that's the way life is, Fair or not.

I've been... let's see. 1) Desmond, Victorian land baron and purveyor of antiques. 2) Wabbit Desmond. Brown. Tiny. Fluffy. Still wearing my glasses. I have a tendency to be very rabbitlike when this way, and may watch you from the cover of a patch of flowers, or from under a low bridge. Safer that way. 3) Young Desmond. I like to go skating like this sometimes. Harry Potterish to the extreme, I fear. 4) Neko Desmond. I break out the Wabbit or the Cat Ears for Serious SL Bizness. Lends perspective like few things ever do! 5) Cyberpunk Des. Been ages but you still might catch me in a VNV Nation tee from time to time. 6) Prim babies? Partnering in SL? Ah... no. Sort them all out? Can't. They are all me.

I don't think a person who use child-av's as "less of a person" for doing so. Equality has nothing to do with what I am saying. I find it interesting that you make remarks which seem written in a manner to make me look worse for having my point of view, and then bring up equality.
