With respect, Chris, maybe this should be a little more important?[/QUOTE

I refer to John Locke. :)

The phrase is based on the writings of John Locke, who expressed a similar concept of "life, liberty, and estate (or property)". While Locke said that "no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions", John Locke coined the phrase "life, liberty, and the pursuit of property". The expression "pursuit of happiness" was coined by Dr. Samuel Johnson in his 1759 novel Rasselas.

Completely different thing.
No, it's not. You are recommending that landowners go out of their way and do something extra so that others, who DON'T pay for use of the land, can do what THEY want. Why are the people who don't pay for it more important to you than those who do?
From: someone

Autoreturn is designed to return stray prims - which may be innocently left there due to a building glitch, an abandoned vehicle from a noob, or griefer objects.

If you're too lazy to check your group tab before you start building - that's your own silly fault. You should not have the right to grief other players by disrupting a perfectly legitimate activity such as flying which generally does not in any way affect your gameplay.
Are you actually saying that Autoreturn should be set on all land as a default? Who the heck are you to tell me what I have to do on my land?
And, as has been said before, it's not griefing if it's on your own land and within the rules. Why do you insist on promoting this lie?
From: someone

Part of the fun for a large proportion of the people in SL is exploring, seeing other people's builds. What's Philip Linden's dream? Building a new country, a new continent? I don't recall seeing anywhere that it consisted of antisocial little balls of paranoia locked away in their own little corner of cyberspace utterly terrified that someone might walk past their door 100m away.
Exploring and seeing other people's builds IS fun and is a perfectly legitimate endeavour. However, that does not mean that those people have a right to go anywhere they want.
I love the strawman of "utterly terrified that someone might walk past their door 100m away." It's a ridiculous rewriting of the argument.
I don't recall seeing anywhere that it consisted of taking away services that people pay good money for because self-entitled folks who aren't satisfied with exploring open, public areas that have been provided for them by both Linden Labs and other residents want go wherever they want.
It's not about being "terrified" that people will come in, it's about other people taking it upon themselves to tell them what they can and can't do on their own property. You don't get to do that. When YOU pay tier on the land, YOU get to say what goes on. If you don't, you don't.[QUOTEI simply cannot for the life of me figure out why so many people are territorial in SL where they cannot be harmed, property be damaged, or have anything stolen from them.[/QUOTE]That's not for you to figure out. It's none of your business what others do on their land.
From: someone

If you're worried about being caught, or being seen, doing something in Second Life ... then there's a fairly high probability you shouldn't be doing it.
This is just ridiculous. What about creators that are trying to keep their builds under wraps so that competitors can't go in and steal the idea before launch?
There are plenty of completely legitimate reasons for wanting to keep your land private and not a single one, other than "I should be allowed to do whatever I want and no one else's point of view matters", to the contrary.

Sling, you have a very, very valid point and I will ponder it. I apologize for the snarkiness.
I do agree that there should be a "Turn off visiblility" option for banlines.

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

If you want to be in a group the puts property rights before a concern for others then that's what you want.

It's not about property rights vs concern for others.

It's about others not caring about the concerns of others whom own property.

Ban Lines are a tool. By the system, they can not be used to "grief". That is the whole part of this thread that is bogus. They do NOT cause crashes, nor TP-Home, nor distorted Avatars. If they do to certain accounts, then you need to go fill out a Support Ticket for technical assistance.

Systems outside of Ban Lines can cause teh symptoms above, and if they do so in an "overactive" (LL's word, nto mine) mannor, than they can be ARed.

If someone is using BOTH Ban Lines and other systems, it can appear as if the Ban Lines are causing the proplems. They can not, and do not, under normal SL operation.

Back to the "rights" aspect. LL has always made it crystal clear from the start that those that own land may do anything they wish with it. I may not agree with that in all aspects, but in determining who can, and can not, enter your parcel, I do indeed agree.

As stated earlier, until, and unless, LL can find a way to prevent griefing in whole, then those whom own land have a responsibility to watch for and rebuttle such within legal means. Part of that is access restriction.

While it would be great to have all of SL open, it would also be great to have all of SL repect each other and not nessitate having Ban Lines in the first place. Places to explore are usually quite obvious (cities, parks, obstensious builds, etc etc), and so are those places where people should respect what "privacy" that can be afforded in SL (houses, residential areas, small skyboxes).

Argue that "privacy" is not attainable in SL all you want. I run a security service so know it very much IS attainable. It is also possible to attain it without disrupting passing traffic and exploration. Not easily, but possible.

Now, as this thread has gone onf or far too long, and is accomplishing absolutely nothing of worth for RA, I'm going to go find real questions to help our fellow Residents.

Ann, could you give everyone a piece of pie on the way out. I'll take apple if you have any.

Perhaps a viable solution is either A, a manually set Ban Line draw distance as mentioned by another poster, or maybe even a dynamic velocity based draw distance. Say draw distance is set to minimum 1 meter, should be more than enough for when you are walking around. Now lets say you give 2 seconds response time, so your ban line draw distance would you M/s * 2 + 1. If you are moving 5m/s your banline draw distance would be 11 meters, 10m/s would be 21 meters and so on.

It wouldn't have been able to get there on its own with all the ban lines in the way.
