Yeah, but furries are the weirdest. They can start on the lesser freaks a few at a time :D
Actually, the "Toaster-Screwing Robot Brigade" (TSRB) is clearly the wierdest. :p

In a world where anyone can change their appearance instantly at the click of a button there is no such thing as race or species - everything is just clothes. Would you go to a restaurant in just your underpants? No. So why go to a church dressed as a giant fox?

If you use that Movie Trailer Announcer Guy Voice, that statement becomes much more effective.

Yes but robots have feelings too. Read "The Robots of Dawn" if you haven't already.

Just a personal opinion, but using the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement as an analogy to someone acting like a twit in a glorified video game is a bit much.
I agree... but unfortunately the response wasn't to a twit's actions in a video game; the action was posting to this forum the assertion that civil liberties should be decided by the free market, and that the government has no role in protecting those liberties. (You can judge for yourself whether that was the action of a twit.)

Again: there are valid arguments that can be made to defend this specific situation. But when somebody insists that individual property rights and "the free market" trump RL civil liberties, I'm not gonna just let it slide.

Let me ask a hypothetical here that has very real world implications to me, because it will have great bearing on some potential SL plans of mine... if I were to create a sci fi sim based on an original work of fiction, and in keeping with that I wanted visitors to use avatars that fit the specific alien races in the fiction, am I going to get protested against?

depends on the hair ;)

Seriously though..... i doubt it. Just mho but i don't think anyone is going to object to dresscodes or the like in a themed or RP sim. After all, if one goes there, one can choose to play along or not. And your plan sounds very interesting so i'm sure people will join in the fun.

My point was that this church seems to be setting some strange rules, and while i don't dispute their right to do so, i would question their reasoning as it does seem rather arbitrary.
Hence my 'beauty-police' comment.

Sorry, but individual property rights are true civil rights. You are wanting special rights to enter onto someone's property, even if they don't want you there. You are wanting forced association over free association. What's next? Prison for those who have thoughts you don't like? Burning of books that have topics that offend you?

Yes, I will trust the free market over government any day of the week.

Actually, I've gone to church dressed as a fox. Ears, tail, whole and complete fursuit. Even the preist thought it was most adorable.

Then again, I was only about five years old.

Besides, this issue isn't so much about changing one's appearance than it is the totally stupid move of singling furrs out whene there is a whole class of avs that don't fit under the mask rule for churches.

I went to church as a cat aged six...some carnival thing...wasn't a prob either,and I wasn't even Catholic (tho the church was9

I got the GI Joe Action Force fighter plane for christmas in 1986. At the time there was a tradition at Sunday school for younger kids taking their toys in to show the teacher. i took my fighter plane in but my parents made me remove the weapons as they didn't think it was appropriate for Church. I agree with them.

This is no different to insisting people remove their hats before entering church, which is also fair enough.

Except that as recently as fifty years ago, mankind proved it was totally incapable of handling that responsibility.

Was that your age or the cat's age? It might be important.

I think I should say something. From what I've read, most of the people on the side of the church seem to bring up the point of "It's their land, so it's their rules". This is true.

But you all don't seem to understand the point many of your opposition is trying to say. It may be THEIR land, but THEIR land has a CHURCH on it. Not to mention, it's also supposedly open for the PUBLIC.

A church is the house of the lord. The Lord our God is within each and every one of us, Furry or not. ALL should be welcomed. I understand the normal churchgoing rules, like "no nudity" or "no crass language"...I could also understand certain SL rules, like "no avatars bigger than so and so meters". But to practically excommunicate furries, and only furries?

What these guys don't understand is this: Second Life is Second Life. All people from all walks of this world live here. To ban just one "race" of people just because they look different is very, very wrong.

We understand it's their land...but they don't understand just how SL works. Norse, this isn't a Gorean sim, nor is it a "Lesbo" sim. It's a public sim with a church on it. We aren't arguing about their rights as land owners. We're arguing about their mentality of being a CHURCH. They obviously don't understand SL, and even if they did, how could they go and single out just one group?

I guess I could go in there as a turtle. Or maybe a dog...perhaps fly in there with one of those macro muscle avatars...Of course, I'll make sure to dress approprietly. Suit, tie, the works.

Well, now that the strawmen are all neatly stacked up, let's recall what was posted:"Why do you wish to go someplace where you are not wanted? Let the free market decide these issues, not the government." And that's just wrong. The government is the only authority that can enforce the rights of minorities; by virtue of being a minority, they must be protected from the "free market" of the majority. And part of that is the right of nondiscriminatory access--even if they aren't welcome at the place being accessed (e.g., a school in Topeka or a bus seat in Montgomery).

The right to private property is great, but it's not a license to abridge all other rights, even on that private property.

But, again, I'm *not* claiming that this is the case in the Cologne cathedral instance--which is the actual topic of the thread. So, lest this drift further from that topic (and pie) I'll refrain from further remarks.

I'm not on anyones side other then the side of being polite and respectful and I dont consider that demanding that someone do something and causing a lot of angst with a mememememee attitude is particularly respectful. They are not Linden Labs and so the property is not public its a build their build where they are wanting to share their art and enjoyment with people of a like mind.

If we want to put a religious stance on it as I have stated before such a decision from the catholic church is not surprising, but this is not realy an issue to me of it being a church or religion its an issue to me of some guy saying I would really like to reproduce this building because it means something to me and I like sl and its "cool"

Its open to whom he chooses not the public its a private sim and like any sim he can pack up the built and take it down in a week if he is given a hard time over it. Personally if i were him I would make the entire thing private shut it down and convert it to a rental and try to sell teh sim to some land baron who buys them because nothing is worth being picketed and griefed over and given a hard time over.

Its not his job its his playtime dont ruin it for him

They're not. They're just guys in suits pretending to be animals. This is a dress code, nothing more.

Some white avatars are blacks pretending to be whites. So why not banning white avatars just because I think they desecrate my kitten toilet? Wouldn' t that be a) ridicoulous and b) discriminatory?

My age. The cat ears were probably younger...I didn't have any real cats back then, just a lil bunny wabbit.... :D
