To those that fall under the category of "Bling Whores":

Stop. Just stop. So far in less than 20 minutes I've seen atleast 30 objects on avatars that were so loaded with bling it was ridiculous. Look, bling is not cool. It never was. It makes you look retarded. As I type this, a person standing infront of me has a necklace that is apparently over 200 prims...with EVERY PART BEING BLING. Not only that, he has bling glasses, bling wristbands, bling piercings, bling SHOES! SHOES!?

Listen...to those that wear it, stop. For god sakes, stop. For those that are considering it, don't. I have items that have bling but luckily "bling off" exists and I don't have to worry about it. It doesn't look cool, it never has, it never will.

</rant>

I dont mind a little bling myself... a tiny bit.. not every piece you have blinging like a blinking christmas tree...

"Blingtard" is one of the 7 stages of SL avatar enlightenment. It comes right after noob-with-a-box-on-my-head.

What are the other 5? o.o

and personally I hate bling...but I don't think people should stop wearing it just because I don't like it lol but I hated the fact that that was the only freebie stuff I could find when I first started.

If it doesn't cause me more lag (which usually a small amount of bling doesn't especially since there is a slider to pick the amount of particles to show) then I don't care if people wear it.

There's a group called BLINGTARD ARMY™ to join in-world, for those who still appreciate the occasionally blinding, always badly animated sparkling, of that most sacred of 90's style particle effects.

As some others have stated, bling is clientside, it won't and can't lag your sim.

However, that being said, for those who actually wish to see particles (as has already been mentioned), as soon as somebody shows up with bling, they get them too, and if they don't want to see them, that creates a problem. Can't see the desired particles without including undesirable particles.

There is an even bigger issue though: The way the scripts are coded. I've seen that brought up too, but I haven't really seen anybody addressing EXACTLY why the coding matters.

The problem inherent in the script is not the listening. That's pretty much a non-issue with lag. It's the processing. If they're using a non-zero channel such as 1, it will only process anything it hears on channel 1. But there is a lot of stuff that uses any of the first 9 channels, so if your command to turn it on/off is /1 bling [on/off], it's going to listen to stuff for dance balls, gags, collars, and many other things. Best to set a channel # higher than 10. Pick your local Zip code if you live in the United States for your channel #, that would cut way down on the number of things it hears and has to process.

Worst offender? Anything that listens to channel 0. That's public chat. ANYTHING it hears on public chat, whether it's intended as a command for the script or not, then has to be processed. Serious lag problem of the highest magnitude.

So to anybody out there who knows a little bit about scripting but isn't an expert: Never, never, never, never write a script that listens to channel 0 if it's not absolutely necessary (is it ever?). Listening to channel 0 is a major crime against all of SL.

Thanks.

I like bling. It helps me distingush the newbies from the oldbies without having to look at their profiles :)

Would a christmas tree fall under the "Bling Whores" Category too?

Well, yes, but you can say that about a lot of things that people do.

Take mullet haircuts for example (sorry Chris). Or wearing WWII army jackets with jeans. Or the whole of the 1980s.

What is cool for one. Isn't cool for everyone. I have caught hell for having a tail and being Neko. But I like it.. I'm the only one that has to approve of what I wear. But I'm not a fan of bling and love the fact that I can make it vanish!

Surely "cool", by definition means that what the majority think of as cool is automatically cool; coolness in the sense of being fashionable and "hip". It might not necessarily look good, however.

Agrees, if you are going dancing, a romantic place, hair tied up, long black dress, and a simple necklace with a small sparkle on the stone, and a little stone to match the necklace in your strappy shoes. Bling can be done well sometimes, just depends how it's worn

Personal taste is just that: personal. My objection to bling is that flashing or flickering lights trigger migraines in a lot of people including me. Just know that wearing bling may cause others to be more than just annoyed, you may be causing them very real pain. I have particles turned off, and that helps. I just wish that the default was bling off instead of on...

There can be practical reasons for bling. When you are a girl who has had enough of those guys who try to pick you up while you are shopping, the partnership ring that blings makes a statement :-)

I shocked a jeweler inworld by asking if she could, pretty please, sell me a non-bling version of a ring I really liked. Call me lazy, but typing /bling off every time I log in gets annoying ;) She did, too, and I am a happy camper!

I've trashed items I've bought when they were blinged out without any notice of that where they were being sold.

I like a very subtle bling. Nothing that is going to light me up like a firecracker. I won't be draped head to toe in it, except for Best in Bling events.

The only bling I have is in my eyeballs and on one of my rings. Mostly subtle crap nobody ever notices.

Now the belt I found at that Marine Treasure Hunt that blings like a freaking super nova only gets pulled out when I want to irritate people at "Best in Bling" events.

Well starting out I ran into a lot of bling... and hated it right off. Most of the freebie places had tons of it...

Nice stuff but the bling was insane, most you couldn't turn off and was no mod so you couldn't remove the script..

I found a nice belt at one... but the bling made it impossible to actually look at the belt.

Bling is a personal thing, a little isn't bad... like one or two sparkles on an outfit... but when you got a huge prim count belt that has all but maybe the leather strap blinking like christmas lights on speed...

Bling = Lag
12-19-2008 15:21
The biggest peeve to all those who "proudly wear bling" you are lagging the sh*t out of everyones computers! Bling (a listener script) is one of the worst lag causing things out there XD

"First let me explain how this causes lag. Chat commands depend on the llListen() function and the listen() event to function. A script which is listening accepts every line of chat spoken in range of it and runs it through a procedure to determine if it is meant for the script to hear or not. Even if it is not meant for the script, the script must analyze it to find out. This costs processing time, and creates lag." Quoted from :

then just leave the area to a place where no blingers are standing. problem solved.
