For a relative 'newbie', I think you have the right attitude. I don't wear bling either. It's simply a matter of taste.

Strange isn't it? What we fight, or debate on in these forums. Bring up Gor/ BDSM/ Child Avs/ Furries/Porn, and whatever, and most of us are all for live and let live (me included). We all want to have the right to be - enjoy SL - how we want to.

Bling? All of a sudden people become judgmental.

The first things you listed are personal kinks. Bling is a crime against nature.

I blame them forgetting to include "the right to wear Bling" in the US Constitution.

you know that reminds me

I have never - ever - seen a balding man in SL.

Ive seen bald men

Shaved hair men.

But a bald spot, or balding? Nope

Just accidents of the non prim default hair LOL.

Check out Tooter Claxton's AVs sometime, then. :D

... bling on/off scripts generally do not remember the last state, so whenever you TP bling starts up again.....

And when you relog, too. This is a vast annoyance to me, constantly slapping down my jewelry.

Scripters, is there something that can be done about this?

Bling itself does not cause scripting lag. It's actually the bling on/off part that is the culprit. It's there actively listening to the chat. Every seperate instance is parsing everthing said within it's listening distance. And since it is easier to drop one stock freebie script into every prim than write a new script to handle all the child prims .... your average G dog blingtard is killing the scipt processing CPU cycles.

Sure. It would be trivial for the on/off script to pick up at the last state it was left in. The most commonly available freebie bling scripts don't do this, tho.

Yes.

I have seen jewlery that could be customized with bling rate, size color or off altogether and then given a command to stop listening alltogether. From then on it remaind in it's last state until you reset the scripts manually.

[edit]
Yeah, what Nika said. Just don't put the damn bling code in on_res().

I have some nice jewelry that has bling with no bling off command. I ripped the script out of it...but it still blings. It's one of my favorite pieces and when I find something similar with no bling I'll buy it.

Just a point of clarity.. Bling is started by a script, but does need a script once started.. It is a particle effect and becomes part of the prim.. While this may cause some lag it will not be much. The lag comes from the open chat listeners looking for /bling on /bling off..

Particle effects are client side only.. So they are not lagging the sim, just your client.

So once the bling has been turned on, you can remove the scripts and the bling will continue.. You will have to put a new script into each prim that blings with the following code.

default{

state_entry(){
llParticleSystem( [] );
llRemoveInventory(llGetScriptName());
}
}

This will turn off any particles in the prim. Then delete itself.

Now this does not mean I like Bling.. Just wanted to make things a bit more clear.
Normally the only bling I wear is my wedding ring, and my favorite necklace. But I think like many other things, a little bling goes a long way.:)

I do sell shoes with bling, (people asked for it) but it is a very low lag scripting method.. Only one high channel listen, everything else is a link message..

I like a very subtle bling. Nothing that is going to light me up like a firecracker. I won't be draped head to toe in it, except for Best in Bling events.

I've had very small and slow bling on jewelry ever since I cleverly figured out how to insert the script into a prim. Every time I see a thread like this I go in world and make it smaller and slower. Soon it will be gone altogether.

Bling is a particle effect. Particle effects are client side. You can turn off rendering of particle effects in the viewer if they bother you.

Complaining about something you have total control over makes you a winrar.

Not to mention terribly blinding to a gal whose eyesight is already quite strained from being on a computer pretty much all day every day - hence why I almost always have 'show particles' turned off or set very, very low. Since I can counter it myself though, to each their own.

I don't really find it much more offensive that flashing signs or lights in bars/clubs, spinning advertisements around the grid, or really really bad fashion sense (that one might actually be worse).

Remeber "Blingers" each bling is a script. Usually a horribly laggy one at that.

Some of us work hard to create lag free sims.

Then bling boy and bling girl show up wearing more scripts than the whole sim :/

Visit my sims sparkling like that gets you a free one way ticket home.

*grins*

Now that to me is a good debate against bling if someone is wearing it when asked not to because of the lag then it is infringing on other ppl's game. So this is wear I would agree with censoring it off your sim.

I stand somewhat corrected. Bling/particle scripts are not that bad. Someone else mentioned the listens (bling on/off), which is what i am referring to.

My point was slightly missed though.

I work rather hard to keep my script count and ips very low. With just me and other non-scripted AVs in the sim the total ips is still below 1500 as a result of 680 scripts.

Add one scripted bling gangsta and the script count can jump over 1000. Even if Bling Off those scripts are still in the sim most with listens.

OK I am feeling Blingist. As bling is obviously not the only source of worn scripts. It is just the easiest target.

I would guess that everyone reading this wears an average of 100 scripts. I regularly see Avs wearing 200 and more.

open degug(crtl shift 1) > in a quiet sim, note the Active Scripts > remove all attachments, noting the change in script count. The difference might be how many scripts you had on.

I know I was suprised the first time i did that.

Soo. My point you don't have to wear Bling to be a Blingtard!

Guess what. Just turn off particles and not only will you no longer need to watch SL's version of cheap perfume, you will also no longer be bothered by the dozens of poofers around you. :)

The answer, my friend, is entirely in your hands.

*applauds politely to Norvis's clear cut solution to make the bling fiends happy and the rest of us safe and sane from annoying poofers and bling.* See, we all can live now in SL world peace.

Every last piece I've got that does that is no modify so there's no way to fix them. I have lots of blingy shoes I don't use too because they have stopped blingy scripts in them, and I can't even open up the scripts to reset or start them :(

I don't mind other people wearing bling. I get huffy when I accidentally buy an item that has bling not advertised as such. If other people want to look like a walking Tidy Bowl commercial, that's their world, their imagination.

I think particles are cool. Bling is not. It might be cool if it were very small and didn't look like a lens flare. Also it's usually too regular. Jewelry sparkles at random, not with the regularity of a neutron star.

I think the bling effect also could be cool if there were tiny (and I mean really tiny!) sparkles in an elf's hair for instance. Just little pin pricks of light. I wonder how small particles can go. Maybe the same effect could be achieved with an alpha texture with a script rotating between full bright and full transparent. I guess that would be laggy too.

I'd like to meet an elf with fairy dust in his/her hair and suspend my disbelief for just a moment or two.

The only item I wear with bling on any kind on a dayly basis is my wedding ring. Thats it. would rather stand out by not standing out, and yet not conforming.

I think most folks are quickly shamed out of wearing bling.

Where are these people you speak of? :)

I think it does depend where one goes though...blingtards of a feather hang together. I rarely see over the top bling at say Avilion ballroom for example.

Hey, I just saw a way in which bling can be useful! Some naked dude wearing a tire or something around his waist just appeared on my doorstep and before the guard bees whisked him away, I was half blinded by the bling that covered him from head to toe. I suppose it was better than seeing his nakedness. I *think* he was naked under all the bling, anyway - it was hard to tell.

I only know for sure that he was a guy cuz I checked his profile.

Okay here is what I think or noticed in case anyone cares.
1. I am still new and have never worn the bling. Not that I would or cared too.
2. I dont really see that much of it on ppl. So I dont know where this is such a problem.
3. It may not be something you like, but who are you to tell ppl not to use it? Do we really need to censor ppl in a place where freedom is a main reason for ppl to use SL?
4. Are you the Bling Police?

Just as in anything else on these forums, people have varying opinions. The OP has one opinion on this topic, others have theirs...no harm, no foul.

/quickly flashes my new "Bling Police" badge - "Just the facts Ma'am" :p
