From: Ann Launay There's no war, I just don't understand why you bring it up as often as you do. It's not as though anyone is trying to force you into ears and a tail. Because.... when no one's home, and the computer is shut off, he dances in front of a mirror wearing ears & a tail, wishing he was brave enough to do so in public, prancing thru the streets shouting 'Look at me!! I'M A CUDDLY KITTY-CAT!!!' Anotherwords..... Closet Neko!!! Anyways, I always thought it was sometimes silly for a place to have certain avatar restrictions. It makes me think "Wow! Not enough room in your imagination for other stuff??" But at the same time I can see the reasoning behind it for other purposes: RP or ambiance. So I guess the answer is- Take it or Leave it.

From: Qie Niangao Actually, seems more justified than most forms of discrimination. Based solely on the fact that my touch-typing skills never extended to the top row of the keyboard. So your imagination can't reach for numbers? What a good boy! j/k

Frank's is usually packed. They can afford to keep a minority out for what ever reason. Just a stricter dress code as far as I am concerned. Might as well say elves only or no capes or whatever. I'm actually curious if they are calling all non-human AVs furries. Just a thought. If you want to know if there are any furry friendly jazz clubs, it's usually easier to ask which ones do not allow furries. When I feel like taking my favorite lioness out for a night of formal dancing, we usually go to Avilon. I know I have been to Sphynx and Bogart's numerous times as an anthro-tiger. Never had anyone make a comment at all. As far as that goes, we could declare it formal night at wherever the Forum people Hangout; flip the jukebox to smooth jazz and have a ball. I know Joseph has a black suit at the very least I don't think I'll lose any sleep over not going to Frank's anymore. There are plenty of other places that want my lindens.

Dalek Line Dance?
And - do they make formal for Daleks? And- how many Daleks can dance on the head pf a pin?
And- btw - two days- and I still did not receive a response as to the question asked directly of the Frank's Place folks. I guess it realy doesn't matter and we have some good results here- we learned there are places specifically fur-friendly - we open some thought paths perhaps previously unexplored.
Happy Friday all

From: Lexxi Gynoid I will read that last sentence in the first paragraph to mean that a person faced with someone naked in their establishment is being faced with this naked person without their consent (and I assume that is what you meant). If that is the case, I have no comment. You are absolutely right Lexxi. That's exactly what I meant. I mean I do mean things to people, embarassing things to people, but I make sure that it's somewhere appropriate to that sort of embarassment. Yes I also flirt with danger (this is more the RL stuff here) as a little spice adds the edge. I'm not stupid though ... and I would never place someone else in a position where they are going to get into hassles. If I have told them to do something then it's me who is accountable, at the end of the day.

Shortly after my period as a noob in my oven (accidentally put it on one day about a week after I joined, went to the Welcome Area, offered to bake pies ... oh the irony) I had a period of being a Dalek. It was fun though the av itself was not very good quality.

From: Wulfric Chevalier Most furries I see are largely naked, some wear clothes, but most don't, and since most furry AVs have prim bodies, clothing could be difficult (though not impossible). Which would seem to make it rather hard for them to comply with the formal dress requirement. Sir, perhaps someday you might visit Caledon, where you may see the few of us non-humans in residence there, dressed in full (albeit victorian) suits, tuxes and top hats (or fancy dresses for the ladies like our Duchess). (sorry, no idea how to make a link in this Forum software) Yes, daresay the 100% prim avatars would be a trifle hard to dress, but the vast majority are only partially prims and can quite EASILY be dressed in anything from Bare Rose to Simwear fashion. I have clothing ranging from civil war uniforms, to my native victorian, to mainland modern. Tis' quite easy to 'fit in' as it were, with a non-human avatar. Sadly, a LOT of the 'no furs' edicts are due to the idiocy and in the local vernacular 'freak the mundanes' behavior of a few, dreadfully obnoxious furs. Such folks who dress and act inappropriately for an area, insisting on their own ways rather than adapting to the native culture and dress or politely leaving if they choose not to adapt. Not all of us are animals in more than apearance, but many choose to live down to the lowest common denominator and tarnish the reputation of all. It does not help that certain sensationalist publications of dubious editorial quality and principles (aka, Second Life Herald) continually run stories highlighting the behavior of the uncivilized furs. Were I to run a venue as was mentioned, I would merely limit it to proper dress, and decide species on a case by case basis. Is the person trying to conform to the local social situation? Are they taking part in the culture? That would be how I judged. But its completely up to the owner what he or she wants to do...I am not personally bothered and don't consider it discrimination. It is choice of who one wishes to associate with, a choice we all freely make. - M. Deckard, Caledon

Sir, Later in the thread I withdrew my remark about "most furries being naked", having had several similar (though less elegantly phrased) responses. I am now quite prepared to accept that, although the majority I have seen have been unclothed, they do in fact represent the minority of your fellow furs. Wulfric

From: Mako Zhangsun I fail to see a prejudice. I quite fully agree with your position. It is a choice of association. From: Mako Zhangsun Also will point out Amar, that when I met you, you were in your RP gown from an RP sim. Almost every period RP sim I have been in does not allow furries, or any other AV that does not match the flavor the RP sim is going for. The simple reason is it ruins people's sense of immersion to be walking around in Gor and see Papa Smurf giggling with the slaves.
Unfortunately, at this point while I agree with your first point, I must quite respectfully disagree with your reasoning. I am a RPer from the pre-internet days, came up through the text-based mucks, RP'd on games where you were treated as a fool by the masses for RPing (UO, etc) and am now at home on Second Life in a themed area (Victorian / Steampunk). It has been my experience that, the persons the most insistent on total 'immersion' are the least skilled role-players. If a person cannot maintain immersion whilst speaking to someone that is not exactly like them in dress and actions, it is a function of their lack of skill at RP not a breaking of immersion. Personally, I have stayed in-character in my victorian homeland, while speaking to a group consisting of a futuristic robot, a man in club clothing and a woman roughly dressed like a belly dancer - HARDLY immersive for the victorian era. The closest I came to going out of character and noting their dress / species was commenting 'I see from your mode of dress that you are mainlanders? Capital! We have not had guests from the mainland outside of the Port in ages! Welcome.' Then we chatted a bit about the glories of our steam railway (scripted trains) and airships until they went to explore on their own. Later, after apparently interacting with other residents, I received an IM from the bot player 'You're all kinda weird here, but nice.' which I took as a complement, both to our treatment of others and staying mostly in-character with the visitors. In RP, one plays ones part....the surrounding situation should not really matter and one should not blame their lack of skill on others 'breaking their immersion' by the very act of existing.

Wulfric My apologies, I had not gotten that far into the thread when I was quite rudely interrupted by the real world. Upon my return, I posted a response without first reading futher. (And sorry for the posting style. I have been trying to 'speak' more true to the period, aka formally, ingame and it has spilled over a bit into my postings here. )

I'm not trying to stray too far off topic here, but in my limited experience with RP, the most fun I've had has been with people who are able to deal well with a complete anachronism. I agree with Macklin. Rather than having to have everything perfectly within certain boundaries, a good RP'er will be able to roll with the punches a little and deal with things that are outside of the norm. It takes more imagination and the ability to shoot from the hip, but it can be a lot of fun.

From: Trout .....It's SL. I can be whatever the hell I want. I'm a flying Dutch cowboy vampire zombie who kidnaps people and ties them to the wings of his biplane while he strafes Gor dressed in an ape suit and singing opera, so back off, M'Fers. That pretty much covers it all, doesn't it? Just do it in formal attire at some venues

We had a garden party with a griefer as guest-of-dishonor! This was LONG ago when we were 5 sims instead of 30+ it is now, so I may have forgotten some of the details, but this is the general course of events. 1) Griefer in full futuristic armor (he rather resembled a bug) enters the garden of a resident, draws a gun and starts counting down. 2) Resident freezes griefer with land tools. Announces it on our group channel. 3) We have an inpromptu garden party to admire her new 'rather ugly garden gnome' statue. She missed a freeze and he started trying to orbit people. And (after the land was quick switched to damage OK) learned that while we dressed in formals rather than armor, a lot of us were quite well-armed. In the right circumstances, even a griefer can spawn Role Play. It just takes a flexible mindset.

From: Maklin Deckard (sorry, no idea how to make a link in this Forum software) On my screen, and I believe on many systems (there is a work-around posted in a sticky, but I can't add stuff to my computer) your "link" becomes but a small red X on my screen. You can post your pictures in the thread, if you wished to go that route instead of putting a small red X in your post (though this apparently makes a link on other's computers). You may or may not already know this trick, especially if you really were just going for a link, but to post a picture in a forum like this: - Go to the picture you wish to post from Flickr (which I mention as you have a Flickr account) - Click on the "all sizes" tab above the picture - click on "small" or "medium" - Go down to the "To link to this photo on other websites you can either:" - Go down to the 2. Grab the photo's URL: box and grab the url - post url here with the image tags applied. On the other hand, as noted at the beginning, you might have really desired to post a link and not a picture. I cannot help you there, other than to note that I normally just copy and paste a URL to a thread and not use the img tag method as that creates a small red X on many users screens. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2202/1815232098_d52c5ab483.jpgHere are your larger sized picture urls without the image tags: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2079/2086128654_f836526e39.jpghttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2271/2064339729_62bc7756fe.jpg

Dumb and Dumber
03-14-2008 10:41
If the sim is wanting a certain kind of role play or historical time period ambiance, than requiring a certain type of AV might be deemed merely insensitive or creatively lacking, but sims that are exclusive as opposed to inclusive have a habit of disappearing for lack of traffic - that's dumb on their part. If the sim is focused on excluding just furries (as opposed to other non-human AV types), than it's outright discrimination with the bigot making a statement in the sign - dumber yet. As a non-human tiny, the only time I've seen it half-way justified in asking for a certain type of AV is within a private combat sim where being a tiny AV might give me a slim tactical advantage in being a small target.

I tried the URL in brackets first, for me, they are unclickable text with URL /URL before and after. This worked in other forums i have been on, but apparently LL and simplicity not going hand in hand, they are just text here. THe IMG looks like links to me, I see no red X's. Of course, I am on Windows/IE (and have no intention to change) and you may be on another OS or browser.
