It's not a TOS violation to exclude furries because there is no real life law to prevent it.

If it said 'no blacks' or 'no gays' then I would expect an AR would be dealt with as it was discriminatory - and I doubt if a 'KKK roleplay area' would be tolerated either.

There was some general discussion of this at the Governance meeting yesterday dat seemed to imply that some more extreme examples of this could be viewed as intolerance (and be ARable), but I suspect something like remains well within their rights as a landowner. It seems like it might be viewed more like "no shoes, no shirt, no service," even if being a gurry might be viewed by some as more of an identity than an outfit.

I deal with "no kids" now and then from places, so I do symphathize.

Everyone discriminates all the time. To discriminate is to choose. I choose to spend time with my friends, and in doing so, I discriminate against those I don't like or who I've never met. The point is whether the discrimination hurts or harms someone in an unjustified way.

Preserving the ambience of an RP sim or a formal dancehall justify discriminating against furries, in my view. If the furry becomes human and dresses appropriately, they will be welcome, presumably.

On the other hand, banning furries because the owner thinks they are all terrible perverts who are going to try and corrupt him into acts of unspeakable bestiality would not be justified in my opinion. Banning anyone who has ever worn a furry AV would not be justified.

But either way it's not illegal, it's not against TOS, and it's within the owner's rights. Not remotely comparable to RL racism or sexism, if only because no one has to be furry, it's a choice.

Actually.. Most of the furries *I* know.. are almost always clothed. My best friend is a Bobcat in a business suit. (a very tasteful, well made one, too). He's the type who would like a Jazz club too.

We obviously meet different furries :). The Bobcat I can handle, but /me shudders at the thought of voluntarily wearing a suit or going to a jazz club.

If they play jazz I don't know why you want to go anyway.

I do not understand. Because I like jazz?

Sorry to say that my own personal view is "no kids" for my places. Nothing personal to people who want to age play, but to me personally it's not appropriate for what I am doing to have kids there at all. PG or otherwise.

I've never been to Frank's place

is it some kind of ultra-realistic build or something?

Frank's Place:

The place where I danced as Princess Leia with R2D2.

They're saying this is a Jazz type place and usually these places require formal attire and furries would seem out of place. Also, they might feel it will bring down the upper class atmosphere they're trying to portray in there.

I know I'll hear it but I feel nekos do the same thing in these places.

I have to say I'm really impressed. Unless I missed it I did not see a "you can't name names it's a tos violation" rant. Then again it's still early and the few who trip over themselves to rave this out have yet to come in.

It still evokes discrimination to have such a sign.

It is going to cause people who stop to read it to conceptualize the exclusion of furries.

Frank's can do whatever they want.

But its not a beneficial thing to do, that is all.

So I'll go ahead and ask.
Are there any Jazz Clubs that are Furry-Tiny-Dragon friendly? Wouldn't that be a better way to solve the 'dilemma'?

Has anyone simply asked the owner of the club why he/she has chosen this particular dress code? If it truly bothers you or anyone else, ask them (politely) in IM. You can then decide if it's a place you want to frequent or not. There's room enough for everyones fantasy in SL.

If no such Furry Jazz Club exists, build one.

I was thinking of human tinies, but nekos pose kind of the same conundrum: How "human" does my pile of pixels have to be to meet the dress code?

In principle, I don't see a problem with a private venue setting a specific atmosphere by specifying a certain style of avatar. On the other hand, if R2D2 is really human enough for Frank's standards, then I'd surely come as Test Male wearing a freebie tux--or gown, depending on my mood of the moment. ;)

Cheetah's Jazz and 80's club welcomes all AV's provided you mind the rules we've established. here is the statement from our club rules:

*No Discrimination of anyone on grounds of race, gender, religious beliefs, language, AV choice, size, shape, etc, etc, etc. Treat everyone with the respect you expect to recieve.

This policy will not change. Please feel free to visit our club anytime, and bring that special someone for a romantic dance. Or, just come stag and party with us! We'd like to be accomodating to all, so I'll be putting in some dance poseballs for a variety of AV types today. :)

R2 dancing with Leia was OK but had he shown up with say...Chewbacca, I bet the Sith would have hit the fan.

I should point out that it was a Halloween party at Frank's place.

Well I change my avatar too much to "be" anything in particular.. which really bothers some people. Since some of my avs have been furries, I still consider myself to be one, at least by proxy. My avatar tends to have a sort of "Anime" feel to it.

One day, I had a friend, and former coworker who for whatever reason, sent me a teleport request one day. Being as this was a friend, I saved my work, and popped over to where the TP led.

At the time, I was dressed in my "Kawaii" style anime avatar. One of those ones with the sculpted head.. Still very clearly human (pink skin, head hair, red dress, all that...)

Anyways, I followed her teleport. And whence I arrived, I found myself in a "gor" place. And as I was asking my friend "why did you teleport me here?" (it was an accident actually) I was immediately beseiged with insults and rudeness of unbelivable proportions as I was told by several people that "Furries" were not welcome. I teleported away before they could eject me.

The thing I find most strange about that altercation, was of course the fact that my avatar wasn't actually a furry.

I have met my share of idiots in both fur and not fur.. and on one occassion, I was so moved by my anger as to use an unkind phrase towards a small cluster of idiots with fur. To this day, I regret my words, and I take that memory with me, and try to learn from it. I wouldn't treat "all" Furries with contempt simply because they are furries.

Of course, at this moment, my avatar looks a lot like
<---- that avatar.

Personally, I think it's going a bit far to discriminate based on appearance. (though if you're wearing a zombie avatar, don't expect me to face my camera towards you). Maybe if you were making a machinema or something... I could see saying " we only want people dressed like this".. But a sign like that in a "come as you are" social club, just smacks of uninformed prejudice and stereotyping.

Frank's Place is not a "come as you are" social club. It is a formal dance club that tends to play music by Frank Sinatra and the like. Formal wear, except for events like Halloween parties, is required attire.

Lol the discrimination at being accidently teleported is stupid, I would think they could have been understanding of that.

But the fact they called that av a furry brings Dumb to new heights. (depths?)

There are people, admittedly lacking in intelligence, who regard anything that is not obviously human as "furry." And that would include sculptied heads (as in that picture). Not all in this group, though, but many would see Nekos as also being "furry", unless some attempt was made to make the ears and tail look obviously "attached" and "fake".
