Thanks to everyone for your kind words. Really, though, all I did was sit down and find an angle I liked...it was someone else's set design, a balcony on the creepy house in Stormwind.

/me runs to creepy house in Stormwind before a long line forms...

As am I, Brenda, as am I. I deleted a Naughty Nurse outfit and berated myself for half an hour. I can't imagine actually deleting a pair of shoes!

/me raises a glass of wine.

To the shoes.

Thank You all. I tossed and turned all night over it. It's OK, today bought two new pairs of RL shoes to compensate.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

What ever happened to my rating ???

I sent you L$10,000 in a used brown paper bag along with several very specific items of clothing as your notecard instructed.

Why do I get the feeling I've been shuffled to the back of your chaotic inventory :(

Oh and while I was waiting I reduced my inventory to a svete 4200 items :)

No pics=no rating. Actually, if you send me $10,000L, you can have whatever rating makes you happy. Hell, I'll write an ode to your sluttiness that would put Shakespeare to shame. I am totally open to bribery. All it takes is pictures, though, so slut it up and hit the snapshot button. I'll rate just about anyone - I've even rated at least one person who I'm convinced is an alt controlled by a guy. Not naming names. I'm looking for an assistant to expand the business to rating guys. Anyone interested?

In an effort to reduce my inventory Ill send you my actual slutty pictures, rather than those tame ones I sent before.

Woo hoo, I'm down to 4900. ... TP is much quicker, I've noticed.

Can somebody 'splain please why this is? Zaphod, maybe? I don't get why inventory size would matter on TPs or sim crossings.

Not doubting you, Oryx, just don't understand why it would make a difference.

Yeah I was sort of doubtful myself actually. I thought, well gee, maybe SL is being nice to me. But I've definitely noticed a difference between 10,000 items and 5,000 items. The time "Between" (a reference to the Dragons of Pern series, haha) is a LOT shorter. My alt, who has only 1100 items, teleports almost instantaneously. Same computer, same settings and preferences, same everything. The single difference is inventory size. The alt has fewer problems crossing sims as well; she doesn't end up sinking through the ground or flying into forever-ever-land for 10 seconds like Oryx does. I am SO not a computer person and I don't understand Fact One about servers n such. All I know is what I see and experience, and I can guarantee it with a stopwatch. :) Sorry I can't answer!

Oxygen is necessary. Food is necessary. Shoes are not.

See my point?

Funny, I don't recall my Avi ever breathing, and has infrequently eaten during his life.

However turning up to a formal ball with no shoes on his feet will quickly get him kicked out...

Now which is more necessary? (in the context of enjoying my SL experience, which is what we are really talking about here)

Are you on crack? Do you really think I would be stupid enough to say the depression is ALL based on people not buying no-copy items? Do you really think I assume everyone is now boycotting ALL the furniture makers? Where do I mention a boycott of furniture makers in my OP?

My OP was a bit of hyperbole to point out that reducing inventory can be a good thing. Read it again.

"Folks, we have a smoking asset server that is overloaded, leading to permanent loss of our no copy items, leading to a loss in consumer purchases, leading to a depression, leading to creators selling their land and leaving, leading to the end of SL."

Can you see it's a bit tongue-in-cheek? Or do you think I really believe if you don't reduce your inventory, SL will fold? Jesus.

You don't contribute much to the tone of the discussion by accusing me of being a drug abuser.

You have on a number of occasions complained about no-copy items, so much so that it does really begin to look as if you have a thing about them. And furniture is almost invariably no-copy, not buying no-copy items = not buying furniture = boycotting furniture makers. No, you didn't mention that explicitly, it's an extrapolation. A "bit of hyperbole" if you like.

My failing to see that your OP is intended to be facetious is hardly grounds for you to start hurling insults. Or is that meant to be "tongue-in-cheek" as well?

Daisy, put down the pipe already *smirks*

Raymond's OP was exactly as he just said. A call for the need to help LL (who needs all the help they can get) to reduce the load on the assest servers. The mention of people not buying No-Copy items is a RESULT of the asset server failures.

I, personally, won't buy No-Copy right now. With the constant loss on the Inventory, I can "restore" most Copy items, or have backups anyway. While I don't "boycott" No-Copy, I look at the purchase with an eye toward the possible loss of the item due to LL's asset issues. Why would I want to buy somethign that has a high chance of being lost? I still do buy some No-Copy, but only from places that I know the seller, and know they will replace an item if LL loses it. Not a lot of sellers will, as it is a pita, because they ahve to track every sale and then look through those transactions to see if that person really bought that item.

While some may call for all items to be Copy, Raymond's psots simply read that LL needs to fix the system so No-Copy items are not in danger anymore, thereby INCREASING their sale. The exact opposite of boycott.

So I agree with him. Either you just can't read and comprehend,or it was a drug induced logic.

I personally don't see enough Residents making enough of an impact on their inventory to matter to the terabytes of data in the asset server. I fear the only way this problem will be corrected is for LL to either increase the technical capacity of the asset server itself, or to increase the effeciency of the Inventory system.

The technical solution is probably the hardest, and most expensive. A bit of recoding on the Inventory system to make it easier to work with inventory, as well as easier to make our own backups, would be far more economical, and far easier to implement. Would work best on a two-phase plan. First to improve the Inventory management system for the short term, and then to work on improving the asset server and networking on the long term.

Anyone want to take bets on if either will happen? *chuckles*

I got my inventory from 15k+ items to less than 9k! Just finally got around to deleting unused stuff and storing my old clothing textures in prims... These are textures that if SL were to decide to eat the prims aren't going to kill me, because I have the RL side copies. More likely, SL would eat the textures anyways ;)

I believe it works this way:

Remember that each SIM is a separate server (although supposedly 4 SIMs can be on a server...its kind of irrelevent in this case though)

When you TP to a different SIM, you are essentually pulling all of your data that makes your avatar from one computer to another...so all of that data needs to travel and then be put back together again in the other computer.
Meahwhile, all of your inventory is on ANOTHER server which is communicating with the SIM computer you are now in.
The larger the inventory you have, then the longer it takes to load up on the other end.

Thats also why SIM crossings can be so messy...they appear to be right there in front of you, but in reality, you are wlking from one server to another.

Does that help explain some for you?

My inventory is around 5k. I think I manage that because while I do some creating, I don't focus on it, so I don't have thousands of textures in there. I have a lot of clothes, more than I need, and I periodically purge older items I have no more intention of wearing. And I'm pretty economical on skins and hair and such. I do have quite a bit of furniture in my inventory that I switch out from time to time in the houses, but again it doesn't seem to be all that much. I try to keep it organized and trimmed from time to time.

But isn't a large inventory sort of a mark of SL status? I mean, I was really impressed with this hyper-builder guy I met. He said his inventory was around 30,000 items.

I'm not even up to 6.000 yet, and you guys want me to cut BACK? What can I possibly give up? My collection of inane freebie dances and poses? My wings collection? This liquor cabinet full of drinks? All of these nonworking vehicles in my virtual garage? My SHOES?!

Hey, I NEED this stuff.

I insist we have an exemption to the inventory quota when it comes to shoes or boots. One can never have too many boots...

My ultimate goal is to have a pair of boots for every day of the year.

Hey! I heard that!

Guys...it's totally cool if you want to continually build on your wardrobe and inventory. Some of you may even want to "have a different pair of shoes for every day of the year." Who am I to say that's not a worthwhile goal?

To each is own.

This has been brought up a few half dozen plus times in the past ..

Because of the way the asset server works, I guess it doesn't really help things any, becuase as long as one person owns a copy of something .. the entry has to exist.

So you help your own inventory mess, but you don't save SL.

Not quite true, Collette. Any time you copy an object, it's a new object with a unique key and takes space on the server. Also, every entry in your inventory itself takes space on the server. So, deleting objects from your inventory does save asset server space, in two ways.

Note that I said "object" above. For textures, deleting an entry only reduces your inventory size; it doesn't remove the texture from the asset server. (I believe it doesn't do this even if everyone in SL were to remove it. This is testable and I think I did it: upload a texture. Copy the URL and paste it into a script that applies the texture to an object. Delete the texture. Put the script in an object. Voila! the texture appears.) This is also true for animations and sounds.

And folks, please, do as my wife asks me to do and EMPTY THE TRASH!

10,000 people deleting 100 unique snap shots each from their inventories is 1,000,000 unique item database entires.

Well, it's 1,000,000 inventory entries. The textures remain in the asset server. Deleting the inventory entries is worthwhile anyway.

The $10 upload charge is what keeps the total number of textures (etc) from getting too far out of hand. Just imagine if it were free!
