Currently, the Second Life inventory consists of over 1 billion unique Resident assets whose size is 98 terabytes on disk. Each month over 15 terabytes of new data on disk is created by millions of inventory transactions.
Folks, we have a smoking asset server that is overloaded, leading to permanent loss of our no copy items, leading to a loss in consumer purchases, leading to a depression, leading to creators selling their land and leaving, leading to the end of SL.

LL has not (yet) imposed inventory limits. But here is a simple thing you can do to lighten the load on the asset server: Delete ten more items than you add every time you are inworld.

This small act just might save the world.

Some things you can purge: Copies of your copy items. Duplicated landmarks, notecards and floating text. Clothing you no longer wear. Calling cards of people you can't remember. Extra pine trees, underwear and gestures.

Get creative: Every time I'm inworld, I type a random word in search and see what it brings up that I can delete. It's amazing how much crap you have that's giving the asset hamsters hernias.

Suggestions for other things to delete are welcome. As are comments derailing this thread. :)

I am waiting for prim recycling service to put all the prims to good use;)
But I guess I could spend some time to remove items I don't or won't be using in future like all those newbie notecard guides.

I have been here almost one year and inventory totals almost 5,500 items. Maybe that is why I never had inventory loss? I regularly empty the trash can and I do not horde what I do not want. A search of "object" in my inventory will yield nothing!

Inventory Limits would be a good thing for the freebie accounts. But that is a controversy. 98 TB is not that much today, and LL needs to devise reliable storage methods besides MySQL and Linux to handle it. Maybe a mini instead of micro computer; AS400?

I think they should help themselves and make an inventory shortcut so that 1) I dont HAVE to make 5 copies of everthing to put in my 5 pullon outfits, just one and 5 shortcuts and 2) So we can make more pullon folders by using a single no-copy item with 5 shortcuts.

Bingo, helps the no copy situation as well as cuts down needless copying of items at the asset server.

On top of that, a few of us might self delete more if they actually gave us a decent user interface for our inventory (one that I dont scream at at least once a day) and tools to manage it better, eg duplicate search, built in texture browser yadda ya.

Oh and a third tab next to recent items, one you can add your most used folders to for a quick pick list.

So many things they could do, but everythings more important than everything else to the Linden development team.

Raymond, great idea. I will admit that it is my inventory that is crashing SL (23K+) and I will make amends and deletions.

Nice post figgy! Maybe LLAbs is finally using a throught that the inventory problem can be reduced if they reduce free accounts. Stop no provent future problems!

This has been brought up a few half dozen plus times in the past ..

Because of the way the asset server works, I guess it doesn't really help things any, becuase as long as one person owns a copy of something .. the entry has to exist.

So you help your own inventory mess, but you don't save SL.

Why can't we delete the crap in our libraries? It makes sense for newbies to be stuck with some extra stuff, but after a month we should be able to clean the useless stuff out.

I just pulled about 1000 items out of my inventory this weekend. :)

Wow. Either I'm stupid or it's a stupid system. Or both.

Ok, let the voting start: What items are we all going to delete every existing copy of on the entire grid? Teamwork time, people.

I already did my part. I recently went from 13,000 items down to 5,500. It took days.

Here's what I deleted:

*Every piece of freebie clothing I ever collected

* Every freebie item I collected but hadn't used in the past couple of months.

* I deleted almost every note card except for a very few.

*Because I don't use calling cards I deleted those too. I did find a problem occurred when I did that (I don't remember what) so I learned you do have to have at least one calling card in inventory so that's all I keep now.

* There were a few item that I didn't want to delete entirely so I have them stored in my skybox. I guess that probably doesn't help though.

I am proud to have done my duty king and country.

Well said, I've spoken to people who have upwards of 100,000 items in their inventory. I regularly go through my inventory deleting stuff I never use, and extras like the above mentioned. Personally, I have about 7k-8k worth of items in my inventory, and if I sat down and did a cleaning, I could probably loose alot of things I never use. I am a creator of things, yet I have far less than alot of others who create nothing, (but apparently collect and never delete anything!).

That is pure nuts. 100,00 unless then are builders or multi sim owners. I wonder how much the older beta members objects some are holding?

Its always a good habit to clean out inventory every few months I do this. The leaner you are the happier you be.

Dang, 100,000???? I get cranky when I go over 5500, and have myself a nice sitdown ("do I REALLY need 50 shades of the same style of hair that I got in a lucky chair?";)

I still am in shock over the 100,000 number. I don't see how that's possible unless you can't pass up a freebie box anywhere.

Demo hair and demo skins were two other things I cleared out a lot of. I always saved them in case I decide to buy new hair and skins again but then realized I always just buy new demos again.

Lucky chairs I've always deleted almost immediately. Rare that I don't get something that isn't just crap.

Didnt somebody declare July something or other 'CLEAN OUT YER INVENTORY DAY'? Somebody else said, "DONT EVERYBODY DO IT ON THE SAME DAY OR IT WILL OVERLOAD THE WHOO HA!" Then everybody kinda just forgot about it. When I go to check the amount of items in my inventory, it just shows me that sideways 8 infinity thingy. I have way too much crap.

If oversized inventories is what`s causing the problem, why doesn`t LL put a limit on accounts? Im sure many of us have thigs we do not need. I know most of my inventory are junk freebies from when I was a noob.

Anyway, Maybe Premium members could hold more, that`d be an incentive to get more premium users again.

True. But I think Ray is referring not only to the max database size, but also to the transaction burden that large inventories present. For example, I've heard that overall AV inventory size has an effect on TP speed because of the comm burden between sims, etc..

It is definitely true that AVs with under 10,000 or so items have less trouble. For me, textures are a real addiction, God knows why because I really don't build that much, but putting them in texture organizers and deleting the originals just tortures me. I have to do a big cleanup round soon tho, because I'm up over 8000.

But IMHO the real problem is MySQL, whose underlying architecture is not up to this task. What LL is trying to do with it is scary.

And yes, they sure could make it easier to maintain smaller inventories. Simple thing: wouldn't it be great to be able to see "last accessed" and "created" dates on everything in inventory? Oh, one could I suppose do an infinite number of filters ... but I've never even tried it. Too laborious.

Makes sence right? Well then again its a business first then a service for us. Limit accounts and stop the waste of the asset server.

Yes, this is why I said we should clear 10 things every day, as opposed to having one day where we all clear 1000. Or in some cases 100,000.

Contest: Inventory Confessions
10-16-2007 01:19
Post the funniest/oddest/most embarrassing thing you delete during your next inventory purge. The winner gets a copy version of Supa's animated crab that keeps disappearing even though I don't delete it.

Judging will be done by someone impartial and non-cliquish: Trent Laws.

Contest ends midnight SL time Wednesday. Or sooner if this thread gets locked.
