From: Colette Meiji Ahh I missed that bit - I'm absolutely Certain that economic slow down isn't largely due to lost inventory items.
At most inventory problems are a contributing factor. There are many people who have never lost anything. And quite a few who've only lost small items. Ya, I don't think inventory is a deciding factor as to why somebody sticks around, or leaves. There are much bigger fish to fry. I personally have never lost a single item since '05.

I wish my RL inventory could fit in nice little folders, moving would be so much easier.

There's a lot of unnecessary stuff in my inventory: snapshots, dead landmarks, moldy notecards, etc. Then there are things that ARE absolutely necessary if I am to continue in SL: Hair, clothes, shoes, skins. I don't play SL for my health, I play it for FUN. If I need to have hair, clothes, shoes, and skins to play dress up and have fun, then so be it. They become necessities for my existence here in SL. I don't need food, water, sleep, or any RL necessities. Hair et al are necessities for MY existence here in THIS world. That being said, I find the photograph of my friend Steel humping a prim horse to be totally necessary, and that freebie Model T Ford to be totally unnecessary.

I honestly wouldn't have noticed any lost inventory until just recently when I discovered the dim little number (which I've been told isn't accurate anyway.) The first time it came to my attention was when I pulled out my house to work on which is in two parts. The top part was fine, the bottom was nowhere to be found. Now, a couple of months later it's actually back.

I ask that you all not be so sensitive to my candor.
Candor is all well and good, but it doesn't hurt to take an extra moment to consider how you're expressing it. From: someone and honestly, it is what it is. *sigh* To YOU maybe, but not to others. I have an interesting collection of items which I enjoy showing off, not a hoard that I acquire compulsively and guard jealously.

A lot of this matches how I've heard it works, too. Your inventory is kinda like the index card system in a library. You carry around the cards but not the books themselves. Multiple people with the same exact ginormous object in their inventory doesn't mean that two of these objects exist on the assert server - it means there's two cards that point to that one object. Or maybe a rolodex is a better example: you don't carry around the people in your rolodex, you just carry the cards that say how to get ahold of them. Wasn't inventory in the local cache a while ago? I would have sworn that I didn't always have to wait for it to load unless I did a cache clear. Since inventory is one-to-one with the avatar, I don't see why they _wouldn't_ keep a copy on the local disk.

I think there was enough defensiveness to go around on this one.

They should just put a limit in there and be done with it. No sense pointing fingers at people who like to collect shoes, or skins or what have you. But if there was one uniform limit we were all subject to, and this would actually help the asset server performance, I would endorse that.

I'd be for that, but it seems a bit unfair to the content creators who also have to keep their entire store inventory, plus any other business items (which could be just about anything) all mixed in their inventory with their normal stuff. Some of the bigger names must be full up on inventory with just their things! So yeah, that's a good idea I say, minus that it would be kind of unfair to some residents.

From: Colette Meiji 10,000 people deleting 100 unique snap shots each from their inventories is 1,000,000 unique item database entires. I don't have anywhere near 100 snapshots. I must be more of a loner than I thought.

Why not charge for extra inventory? If I WANT to carry around 50,000 items, I should be able to, provided that I'm willing to pay for it. Maybe something really minimal, like $1/month for an additional 50,000 items or something? And put a cap on all basic accounts?

In theory there could be different limits set for business owners, just as there are different transaction limits now. I wouldn't think that this would be unjustified if some people need bigger inventories for business purposes.

From: Michael Bigwig Ann--explain to me why (especially not being a content creator) you feel having thousands of assets to be 'NECESSARY?'
The last word is key. I can explain it from my viewpoint. I have approx 5,500 items in my inventory and I consider that very low. Firstly, not being a content creator (well, I build a little here and there) I shop, shop, shop, shop and then when I'm bored I shop. I can go a couple of months without wearing the same outfit twice. Without people like me many content creators wouldn't be paying tier. The other reason is I'm a host at at club. I never know what kind of props, silly outfits, etc I'll need. Sure, I could run around before each event and try to find things but if I see an item in advance I'm likely to use "someday" then I'm going to hold on to it. Are these NECESSARY? Absolutely. They are necessary for my enjoyment of SL. I wouldn't be here otherwise.

Someone gave me a nice texture organizer. Since I don't actually have that many textures, I put my in-world pics in there too. Most of my pictures are on my hard drive, though.

I think there should be a limit of items each resident can carry--only if it's true the grid asset-count is noticeably affecting performance.
I wouldn't think it's fair to business and land owners to suffer performance, while a bunch of people are running around 'accumulating' assets they don't need, or more importantly never even use.
If this "boxing-up" method is truly an answer, perhaps this could be implemented as a necessity to all those reaching a specific asset-count.
((EDIT--I do not like the basic account discrimination, I never have--however, if you all truly think that premium account members' money is really being used to create a smoother game experience...fine, limit basic account inventory. How about we compromise--how about basic account are limited to a specific amount, and premium are limited to a separate amount?))
