I'm a guy!

Well kind of...

I think of myself as being a lesbian trapped inside a man's body.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I have been planning on adding a RL photo to my profile, but alas, I have been terribly lazy and not yet gotten around to it. However, I have shared my photo with several folks in here. It really isn't a big of deal for most people.

Actually, one of the reasons I have wanted to post a pic to my profile is to help weed out people that would judge me by my appearence. If they wouldn't want to talk to me because I look a certain way then it is better, in my opinion, to get that out of the way first. That way, I know the folks talking to me are fine with me and I never have to worry about what they might think.

Of course, I understand that some folks are very shy or unusual looking in some way and they may worry that no one will want to talk to them. Some people won't, but there are other people that are great and will be good friends no matter what. :)

Each person must decide for themselves if they want to post a pic or not. For myself, I will post a pic.

Heh heh, in my posts I joke about how handsome my avie is - stunning actually and cool...did I mention cool? ;) - but in RL I'm more like an adult Charlie Brown. LOL - Oh good grief!

Morning great pals!

I was wondering what the thoughts were of my Second Life chums on the sharing of your Real Life photo with people that you trust in Second Life?

During my 4 months in SL I've received photos of the Real Life people behind three avatars that I've met and on each occasion I've been pleasantly surprised as to how it seems to have a positive effect on my communication rather than a negative one which I would always have expected it to.

On each occasion I've sent a pic of me by return, and dont get me wrong, I'm not pretty. I'm not the sort of guy who cant wait to show the world how gorgeous he is. I'm shy in RL and would rather skulk around in the shadows than skip around in the spotlight.

But every time I've seen the person behind the avatar I think it has enhanced the experience of speaking with them in SL.

At the risk of staring an arguement, I dont like doing voice (I know I know I know) basically because I know I'm more confident in groups by type, and I dont like my scouse accent (Liverpool) and I wouldn't just walk into the Hangout for example and shout "Hi everybody!! Look at my photo!!" but i was just wondering if any of you guys had ever exchanged photos and how was it for you?

Is photo sharing a boon or a menace?

Hia Sandy :)

I've only ever received one RL pic. I have only ever sent one RL pic. I don't want to bring my RL into SL too much if I an help it.
I know some people don't want to see RL pics and that is fine. I really don't mind either way. Though I am very shy about giving a RL pic out. As long as someone doesn't demand to see a pic or something, its fine. It isn't ever going to make a negative impact on me. I don't care about pics. Its the person behind the avatar I am talking to - the mind, not the image. Even with RP characters (who most likely won't share RL info lol) it is still the person you are chatting to.
As long as they can hold a decent convo, the rest is irrelevant lol. To me at least.
Saying that, I do have a RL pic in my 1st life tab. But it is from years and years ago ;) lol.

Vocie however, I heard it for the first time the other night. i loved it, though I was typing rather than speaking myself. I don't think I could use it to speak as a regular thing. I'm too used to typing. I'd end up saying my lols outloud. ;) But I did love listening to others.
I think it could be good in some situations though.
How can you hate a liverpool accent? I think that is one of the best accents I have heard. I work with a lot of scousers and I love listening to them lol.
Mind, I hate my accent too so I guess it depends on your own POV.

I would see it as both a boon and a curse. Depends how you use it - as with most things. I think the main thing is to do what you feel comfortable but don't try to force anyone else. That is just going to create negativity. :)

Caymus Conundrum --my favorite white wine. Fabulous blend from California. Unlike any other white you'll ever try. Do not be put off by the screw-top, it's very high quality, and not cheap.

Just thought I'd mention this, because of Cunundrum's name. :) Although, it's spelled a little differently.

Cheers.

Yep. That's another reason why I display my pic. People will often idealize eachother in SL and I'd rather have them like me for who I am and not who they imagine me to be.

. A pic doesnt harm I think, the person that see's me in SL will not travel the whole world to find me...

YES THEY WILL! Ive had exactly that happen to me- some weirdo...collecting info on me...and then turning up from the USA...when i no longer wished to communicate with him online (he was such a strange guy) Literally flew over and haUnted my work, home for a solid week, threatening, abusive...it was not FUN.

Ugh not good memories. You never know the person...you never really know if a pics real anyway...to me its pointless...UNLESS youre intending to meet up r/l, ive no desire to see others at all.

Yes I do. Originally I thought SL was sort of like facebook or MySpace. You post a picture of yourself and some details and then you meet kool people. I have noticed a lot of people don't do it and there could be a lot of reasons for that. I have considered removing it but I really dont see the harm in having it there. It really doesn't give out anymore information to anyone except... I don't get the usually "descript what you look like" comment. I have been on SL for 6 months now and have not had a problem with it. Once I do, I will remove it.

I just read the post before mind and now you scared me. I wonder how someone can track you with only a picture?

Hate it receive a photo of a penis!

I have a few dozen of those too. I love the way men are so good at cutting their own heads off. What is so amuzing about it is the statement they give you while their picture is rezzing. I will let you figure out what that one is. Oh hell, I will just say it. *It's actually bigger than that, not full grown yet* Here is where I hehe, something I never do in sl.
Turns around and runs for the hills shrieking.

I actually keep a RL pic in my profile. I figure people won't look at 1st life info unless they want to know about my 1st life, after all. I also keep additional pics on hand to share--mostly of me being a goof, as cameras tend to bring out the silly in me.

I don't see it as either innately a good thing or a bad thing. Those who don't wish to know don't have to look, I certainly wouldn't give pics out to anyone who didn't ask to see them specifically, or who I didn't know and/or marginally trust.

Ditto voice. I'm shy, I have chatted in voice with precisely three people, group chats are profoundly uncomfortable for me, and I am oh-so-very-tired of being told that I don't "sound" like a southerner. I forcibly removed my own southern accent years ago so that people wouldn't deduct points from my IQ when speaking. Hard enough to be taken seriously on some topics when you have boobs, let alone the additional burden of sounding like Daisy Duke, tyvm.

Anyways. My perspective is that SL = extension of RL, I'm the same person there as here, and I personally am quite comfortable sharing info about myself, but I recognize that not everyone is, or does, or wants to. They should be comfortable with their SL as they choose to have it, imho.

Easy solution to your various issues is don't cyber date anyone who doesn't show you a current pic.

Just don't expect everyone else to have to do things the 2K way.

----------------------

I show my RL pic sometimes. A few people who post regularily have seen it. I wouldn't be comfortable with everyone looking at it though, thats why its not in my profile.

I sure wouldn't show it as condition to having an online date. But then again I'm not into SLharmony people anyway.

Yes this stuff does happen.

The people who claim it doesn't, just haven't had it happen to someone close to them yet.

Let's see, which picture should I hand out? The one where my left eye seems bigger than my right? The one where my mouth is partially open (can't even shut up when someone is trying to take my pic), or the one where, because of my positioning, I seem to only have one arm? I don't have any recent ones but, I suppose if I had a friend wanted/needed to see a picture of me, I would comply. Just, please, don't give me one of you without me requesting one.

If dating in SL is important to your experience here, than I guess pictures would be vital information for some. I'm not here to date so I don't feel the need to see how you look. I kind of like the fact that I will take the time to know you first, without 'seeing' you. I see people all day in my milieu, where fashion is important. Wearing no lipstick is not an option here, it's a somewhat superficial place, but being in SL is like putting on my favourite hoodie, or wrapping myself up in a big duvet. I can finally relax, not worry about my mascara or keeping up with the latest trends.

It seems that some think the only reason someone would not show a picture would be because they are not good looking or that they have something to hide. It's not that important to me, is all. If you _insist_, I will give you my photo but somehow, I will not see YOU in the same way.

yes my RL photo is on my RL tab

I got nuttin to hide, I do not role play, and I am the same person personality wise, when I am in SL or RL
I just look different

If others want to show me their pic I am ok with that

I have used and still use voice, which was not a problem for me, I also DJ in SL, so using voice to me just makes it an even playing field LOL

This is unfortunate, however, it is extremely rare. One is just as likely to have a creepy guy follow them home from the market, and hover outside their house for weeks. That's life, and it's crazy and uncontrollable sometimes.

Putting your picture up on SL isn't going to increase your odds of having a crazy single you out. If they want to stalk you, they are going to do it regardless. If a picture was all it took to lure stalkers, every Tom, Dick, and Susan with a photo available to the public would have stalkers interfering with their lives...but they don't. It's a rarity.

Just be careful about who your talking to, and sharing information with. Get to know someone before you tell them your RL information. I'm a unique case because I'm an actor, and it's just part of the business to 'put myself out there.' I've not only accepted this, but have no choice but to calculate my increasing exposure.

Many people live their lives in the public eye, and the majority of people never have a stalker (at least non they are aware of or are influenced by).

If you attract a crazy from a SL picture, who flies out to stalk you...well...that's just tough luck. We can't always live in fear...but we can understand the possibilities of life, and prepare for uncontrollable events.
